Discover the world together with your characters, don't make it up during the writing itself.

my advice as someone who is also struggling to put my thoughts into words for my story is to take your time with it. write down your immediate thoughts and work with building it up into something after.. that way you dont feel stuck with all this information in your head and you feel like you can breathe a little :)
The best way to do it is to just write. Write anything and everything you can for 15-30 minutes. In example, just last week I was in a writer's rut. I remembered haikus and on a whim I typed one up. Then another. Then another. Before I knew it I had a portion of a tribe's culture and history before me. Writing prompts and challenges (like writing in haikus) helps sift through the overflowing collection of thoughts and filter the ones you wish to hone-in on. Give it a try. See where it takes you.
@3amaintpretty the idea could be that there are two tribes that one lives on a mountian and one in the meadow and there are legends they make of each other some good some bad
I mostly write a lot of unfinished fan fiction and then the occasional original story. What I have learned when it comes to the two. Writing fan fiction: I have most of the characters and story already planned out and I can write in my characters relatively easy. Writing an original: I know bits and pieces, maybe the end, maybe the beginning, connecting the dots are hard, describing crap properly is hard, and a whole lot of unnecessary but I want it in the story anyways. This probably has nothing to do with the video but I wanted to share this anyway.
I'm just getting into world building, so don't take my advice as law. But I find it easy to make big things first, dragons and hydras and such. When it comes time to make the small things I do it by working backwards with why and how: how does this apex predator hunt? What kind of prey encourages that hunting method? Why would this culture have this ritual or settle in that spot? From there it just kind of transforms into a puzzle of sorts.
Writing a fan fiction is using pre-made characters, pre-made world, and usually a pre-made theme. Writing an original is writing everything from scratch. The characters, their personalities and their intra personal relationships don't yet exist. The world doesn't yet exist and doesn't yet have a fleshed out history.
Personally, I find it exceptionally easy to write fan fics. I already have the characters and world built. All that's left is that one plot hook, that one philosophical question, or that one "what if..." And the whole story falls together. Writing originals is actually something I really struggle with. Surprisingly what trips me up is the McGuffin. I can build elaborate worlds and characters and I know what I want them to do... By can't think of either what kicks off to go on the adventure or what drives them to keep going. But not always. At least once I've outlined an entire book in a weekend after expanding on a single "what if"
I guess it is similar with visual artworks. Creating a fan art means you can use references from the subject/original art. But making an original is a starting from the scratch thingy. It might look like fan fiction is easier, but both aren't easy anyways. It's just that original fiction needs more time and effort, but hey, an original work feels more rewarding because you know how much time and fatigue you offered into that creation.
This video is one of the very best advice videos I've seen some really good suggestions I write sci fi and fantasy myself for myself I read my own stories for entertainment and I like seeing the changes in my writing style over the years. This video should had more views there is nothing like building an entire world on paper or word document and watch your story grow. Beats any video game in my small opinion.
Yeah, you can improve at writing really quick. I wrote a story, and I could just realize how much longer the paragraphs were getting, and how it was getting more detailed.
This is beautifully well put and the narrator seems so earnest in delivering her message to the point of breaking into tears. Not sure if it was intentional but she makes every word feel so much more meaningful. I know the content is the focus but I just cannot get over how she speaks.
I think we can discover history as we discover the character. I feel like giving all of the history before introducing the character would lead to exposition dumps, leading the reader to become uninterested.
Jesus, this reminds me of how many online writers introduce their MC through first-person pov self-introductory monologue like: [Hi, I'm Casey Collins, I'm 16, and I live in the nearby street. I'm the little sister of Christopher Collins. I'm fair-skinned, a little playful, and most of all, I'm drop-dead gorgeous.] Like seriously? Is this the first day of school where they do an "introduce yourself" or are they making a slam book? Jeez.

@@Michael-McCollum I have started writing bits of conversations and situations in smaller notebooks. And the more I write, the more I discover of their next chapter. It's amazing. I feel so inspired to share my works with the world. I just gotta put it in full print. Right now, I have my hands to write with. But I have such I WANT to write about, a mere phone cannot contain my thoughts. I need a typewriter or a laptop and printer. There are so many amazing people and cultures that I can't wait to introduce the world to, but big dreams always begin small.
SAMEEE, like I just get more and more ideas and I really don't want them to go to waste so I write and write and write and get carried away and before you know it I'm making a whole damn series lmao. Starting a story's wayyyyyy easier than finishing it.
I am along my way to creating a great book. Grand landscapes and mighty cities, hidden valleys and wonderous dreams, twin moons, one deformed, and monuments of which long have worned. Though a plot is still shaky, I can feel that this story can and shall be great.
Sounds like you have that fascinating world building down! Twin moons sound delightful and intriguing! What does your main character want more than anything in the world, and what pain is greater than the pain he thinks he will suffer by going after his desire? How can you push him towards that fantastic, poignant, consuming ending that inspired you to write the book in the first place, and what will make him see the error of his original idea in a dramatic burst of light dawning on his suffering soul? Who, if anyone, loves him so much that this revelation will destroy him for the sake of the main character (or, even more effective, how will his enemy come to love him enough to sacrifice for him)?
I did a meditation that took me on a journey into a fantasy world of imagination and more. I then decided I should create a story. Worldbuilding and writing a story can be hard so don't expect to get it on the first try. The first story is going to be bad but that's okay because you're just starting or maybe you know how to write but it's been a while. Your imagination is a barrier between fantasy and reality. Let your mind guide you on this long adventure. It's gonna start off hard and seems impossible but when you get it down, it will be easy. Don't say "I can't do this," or "This is gonna take some time" but say "I can do this!" And "This will be long but I need to be patient" novels take time so you'll need to be certain that you are ready to put yourself through a lot. Feel free to take breaks, grab a cup of coffee, relax, watch a movie, and then come back. As long as you go come back, you can do it! Believe I'm yourself and remember that it'll take some drafts. Thank you for being here, I am sorry for your time but believe in yourself before believing in failure.
I’ve been wanting to write a high fantasy turn based JRPG for years but really don’t know where to or how to start. Building a world, characters, conflict which begets my story, with designing the battle system and figuring out what music I want to write is difficult. All I know is that anything I create must come together full circle.
ZampaPaws Sounds like you want to write, but your experience is from video games. This is fine, but if you also read books I would strive to write books as you can create everything down to the last detail. Books are amazing.
@@theoneonly2406 I agree. Handle it like one who wishes to create a novel. Work through the story first, then the mechanics of your game. Make the game fit the story not the other way around.
Futty Nucker Yeah that’s what I did. It paid off in the end; I used RPG Maker a lot, so I would create everything in the game along with the story. This is basically just outlining a novel, and creating the background. So even though I started with gaming as what I wanted to create, I knew I wanted to tell stories that are bigger then video games. My book has a purpose, it’s basically just intertwining real life with fantasy. Basically just follow your heart, it will lead you to a great place !
One thing I’m doing for my fantasy world, is that I’m making my world young-about 700 years old. So, I can use plot points AS historical events, and it allows me to have lots of room for improvisation, for magical discoveries, discoveries of new creatures, etc! My whole fantasy series is a historical event too. My whole plan is to start off from the beginning of everything, and build and build and build from there. I find this method very fun :D

One of the best things to do is for you to realise you shouldnt over conplicate things and have too many details because in the end they either wont matter but also, the reader will imagine the image you are trying to protray in their own way no matyer how much detail you add. When it comes down to pacing your stories it can take a good amount of time with occupying the majority of the overall writing for the work. It is necessary though in order to not throw a ton of ideas on the reader, audience all at once and make them feel lost, or develop disinterest in the piece. It helps with further establishing the scenes, characters, and elements that you wish to incorporate into the story and make it enjoyable to the individual looking into. That, and it makes people gain a certain connection to a great amount of the aspects there in. I know that since I’ve been doing a bit of writing myself and have managed to publish two books, “Lost Case Encounters” and “Tales Of Alandria: Bridging Of Worlds”. Each time I devoted myself to writing out the scenes in each chapters for the books I always wanted to put great amount of meticulous detail into them to really flesh everything out for the readers, make them feel that the events are unfolding before their very eyes.
One thing that has helped my artistic process is edgar allan poe's approach to writing, his reccomendation is to never write anything that doesn't contribute to the story or the characters.
I’ve been thinking about writing a post-modern magic mayincatec war fantasy that is like dynasty warriors, Final Fantasy, and Lord of the Rings combined with native Mexican culture. As for the lord of the rings part, I’m saving that for a conflict against a power hungry warlord from Tytoland who uses dark magic users to conquer the world, tricking some of the world’s people into serving him, even those who were bloodthirsty to begin with. But right now, I’m busy with my interracial love stories.
In a story I'm writing, I thought I'd just make up the world as I go along. In other words, do the writing and world building together. I soon realised wiritng a fantasy story without knowing ur world's history is a really really hard and most defnitely not worth it so prior world building isn't as optional as I thought.
Well i write a fantasy story when I was 16 It's about a guy who lost everything in his life then he tried to suicide to fall from a building as he goes then he saw some jerk hitting a old man then he fell so rage that he is going to kill them as he already going for suicide bcz he got nothing to lose so he kill them and then he realize that he is going to kill more bad people then if he dies than he will accept it So he goes in some for war with bad people then some cop came and start to shoot he escape from their When he came home he realize that he got shot in his head and back He accept that he is gonna die now But he realize that bullet hole in his head but why he is not dead yet Then he realize that he is immortal for some reason Then go back to write some of the historical thing about the immortal thing how he is a prince from royal family and he is not only one about immortal power actually they are not immortal they can be killed But that where I stuck and can get to finish my story also lost my diary where write all this stuff about 70/80 pages And it was 3 years ago 😔😔
Best example is J.R.R. Tolkien, he went through a hole different level and took 20 pages only to describe the leaves of a certain tree, truly The Godfather of modern fantasy story’s.
Those were great questions at the end! Funny that I think I already answered those regarding relationships with other powers in the area since that was the catalyst for the situation that's been boiling a while before the reader comes onto the scene in the first chapter! Kind of the inciting incident, as that can have already occurred before the book begins, catapulting the character into her dire situation, but in my case, this is just back story that's about to boil over into the inciting incident which begins to push her towards what should be her goal, after we learn what has begun to drive her after suffering a while in her unique circumstance.
I'm glad that I found this video. The tips that were shown, I'll use them to come up with ideas for my fantasy book. Plus, this lady almost looks like Bryce Dallas Howard.

GRRM is a prolific writer? True, true. When is Winds of Winter coming out again? ;) I kid; he does write prolifically...on his blog. ;) So, that statement holds water. Cheers! (Edit: can you cut the BGM next time, or slide the volume down to bare minimum? The music gets distracting after a few minutes because it's repetitive (or maybe employ a longer track with varied movements, or a 10-minute playlist instead?). All in all, still a good episode, very helpful. More power!)
I would argue world building > character development. Both are important, but you need to make a world that's worth "fantasizing" about. Where it's somewhere you would want to live like middle earth and star wars or something so dark you it gets the reader, watcher, or player interested in the idea of whether they could survive it and learn to thrive in those worlds like Elden Ring or even The walking dead. After that is established, then the characters that make up the world should be applied.
Thank you so much about the information.😊 It helps me a lot more than you could image . I may not watch all your video but this one is amazingly helpful. Then again thanks❤.
So, I'm just gonna write a short little story for everyone to read. I love writing. I'm 10 and I have made a book! I don't know how to share it so yeah, but I'm just gonna type a short little story to give you something to read! Please tell me some improvements I can make in the replies. I want to get better at writing. Anyways, here's the story. Alice and the Ghost of Doom There once was a girl named Alice. Alice was very smart. She has done amazing things in her life, but one thing really stood out. I think it's about time I tell you the story of Alice and the Ghost of Doom. Alice yawned as she woke up from her good sleep. She sat up and jumped off her bed. She went over to her dresser and got dressed. She went over to the door and opened it. She walked down the long hallway and into the bathroom. She went over by the sink and picked up her toothbrush off the little table in the corner of the room. She picked up the toothpaste and squeezed the little bit left in the tiny container on to her toothbrush. As she brushed her teeth, she counted to a minute in her head. After it had been a minute, she spit the toothpaste out into the sink and washed the toothpaste off of her toothbrush. As she walked out of the room, she noticed an old man with teared up clothes and completely white eyes in the mirror. Stunned, she looked back into the bathroom just to see nothing there. Alice walked over to the couch and sat on it, still a little shook by what she just witnessed. Did she witness it? Maybe she was just seeing things. Maybe her mind was playing tricks on her. She didn't know, but she was a little scared still. She picked up a book off of the coffee table in front of her. It was called Fablehaven. She had heard about this book and how much people loved it. She decided to read it. A couple hours later, she was half done with the book. She had almost forgot about what happened earlier. She had been reading for a while and decided to put the book down.. She had been inside for a while and decided to take a break and go outside. She walked over to the door and put her shoes on. She opened the door just to find that creepy old man hovering above the grass. He moaned. Before Alice could shut the door, the man came up and grabbed her by the wrist. He dragged Alice out the front door as Alice screamed loudly. Her mom came rushing out the door just to find no one there. Well, that's it. If you want me to continue the story, please tell me in the replies. Tell me how I did and what I can do better. Anyways, thanks for reading this!

I'm making a fantasy world but I'm not sure what to name he world. It's a medieval fantasy world inspired by the world of Game of Thrones. I've made some notes of the creatures and the main factions in this world but haven't quite figured out the geography or name of the world it's self.
One thing I did for my world is I’d explore roots of languages similar to the geography of my world, and I’d twist the vowels and stuff around. For example: one of my kingdoms is called Hälengöthos-I based it off Greek, Italian, and Norwegian, all of which share geographical traits to the kingdom.
Yep, it is. But with comics it's dialogue and vision you need to work on as well. You won't need to know how to describe a setting or something so yeah, kinda.

I would advise against worldbuilding as though you're filling out a checklist. Explore these ideas to discover what is meaningful to your story, not to list various details down.
@@izzygomez4359 Worldbuildings main purpose is to serve your story, so I suggest either knowing your story before worldbuilding or to worldbuild as it becomes necessary in your writing. Tolkien for example came up with quite a lot of worldbuilding for the Lord of the Rings in the middle of writing it. Saruman, Aragorn, Bree, the Rings of Power, Gondor, etc, were all non existent before Tolkien started writing the Lord of the Rings. Secondly, I suggest considering your personally held beliefs and values at the forefront of your thoughts as you worldbuild. What made you take on these beliefs and why are they precious to you? What circumstances could happen to characters in this world to make them think similarly, or different? As wondrous as fairys and dragons or futuristic battle-cruisers are, they mean little if they aren't being utilized somehow to challenge or support these values and beliefs.

I have so many ideas in my head but i don't know how to write it→_→
I feel you!
my advice as someone who is also struggling to put my thoughts into words for my story is to take your time with it. write down your immediate thoughts and work with building it up into something after.. that way you dont feel stuck with all this information in your head and you feel like you can breathe a little :)
See where it takes you.
same sadly
@3amaintpretty the idea could be that there are two tribes that one lives on a mountian and one in the meadow and there are legends they make of each other some good some bad
This is the first time I have wanted to write a fantasy novel and this has been such a magical start for me ♥️ Thank you!
I love writing and plotting my world. But I suck at word choice. I can't describe stuff exactly how I envision it. But I still want to try my best.
Very good video, it deserves more attention!
Nice music in the background, too.
I think we can discover history as we discover the character. I feel like giving all of the history before introducing the character would lead to exposition dumps, leading the reader to become uninterested.
Jesus, this reminds me of how many online writers introduce their MC through first-person pov self-introductory monologue like:
[Hi, I'm Casey Collins, I'm 16, and I live in the nearby street. I'm the little sister of Christopher Collins. I'm fair-skinned, a little playful, and most of all, I'm drop-dead gorgeous.]
Like seriously? Is this the first day of school where they do an "introduce yourself" or are they making a slam book? Jeez.

I am along my way to creating a great book. Grand landscapes and mighty cities, hidden valleys and wonderous dreams, twin moons, one deformed, and monuments of which long have worned. Though a plot is still shaky, I can feel that this story can and shall be great.
hope it's going well
Sounds like you have that fascinating world building down!
I watch this video whenever I get writer's block. Works every time.
That's great. Thank you!
@@theoneonly2406 Amen to that
You start with somehting, and then you just keep adding.
I see one problem immediately ... How much knowledge did the world start with?
Fire? Metalworking? Domestic animals? Which monsters are dangerous?
@@bradmiller2329 Great question! Yes, they did start with the ability to do metal work, star fires, talk, cook, etc. The gods of this world created them this way; the people didn’t have to go through the evolution that humans on earth did.
@@bradmiller2329 And when it comes to domesticated animals, they learned which could and couldn’t be domesticated through trial and error. The further along the reader goes into my series, the “meaning” of the people on this particular world are revealed.
@@bradmiller2329 The origins of the “Gods”, why they were put on this planet, how life for the gods works, is revealed bit by bit in my series. My series is, in fact, one massive philosophical and spiritual journey with many characters all rolled up into a nice fantastical burrito.
One of the best things to do is for you to realise you shouldnt over conplicate things and have too many details because in the end they either wont matter but also, the reader will imagine the image you are trying to protray in their own way no matyer how much detail you add. And if you add too much detail, you will be restricting the readers imagination therefore making them not want to read :) sometimes less is more!

I'm currently writing a sci fi book. It's on my passion on robots!
Really , thank you . This video mada a big difference in my way of sorting a novel

Well i write a fantasy story when I was 16
It's about a guy who lost everything in his life then he tried to suicide to fall from a building as he goes then he saw some jerk hitting a old man then he fell so rage that he is going to kill them as he already going for suicide bcz he got nothing to lose so he kill them and then he realize that he is going to kill more bad people then if he dies than he will accept it
So he goes in some for war with bad people then some cop came and start to shoot he escape from their
When he came home he realize that he got shot in his head and back
He accept that he is gonna die now
But he realize that bullet hole in his head but why he is not dead yet
Then he realize that he is immortal for some reason
Then go back to write some of the historical thing about the immortal thing how he is a prince from royal family and he is not only one about immortal power actually they are not immortal they can be killed
But that where I stuck and can get to finish my story also lost my diary where write all this stuff about 70/80 pages
And it was 3 years ago 😔😔
Exactly that, i found it valueable and because of you and how you told me - enjoyable. Thanks so much

Thank you so much about the information.😊
It helps me a lot more than you could image . I may not watch all your video but this one is amazingly helpful.

Alice and the Ghost of Doom
There once was a girl named Alice.

I like writing in First Person. But my fantasy/sci-fi story needs to be in third person.

I would advise against worldbuilding as though you're filling out a checklist. Explore these ideas to discover what is meaningful to your story, not to list various details down.
I’m writing a book and I’m having trouble giving purpose to my realm do u have any advice
@@izzygomez4359
Worldbuildings main purpose is to serve your story, so I suggest either knowing your story before worldbuilding or to worldbuild as it becomes necessary in your writing.
WolfGr33d thank you so much! this helped me a lot!!
