An Introduction to Tumiun | Tales of Tumiun - A Worldbuilding Series

- Welcome to Tumiun! In this first episode of Tales of Tumiun, the Cartographer introduces you to his world by illustrating a map of all the known realms, and sharing his knowledge of them with you.
So sit back, relax, put on your headphones, turn on the captions, and enjoy the adventure!
And like the Cartographer, I would very much like to know what you would like to explore more of in future videos, so be sure to let me know in the comments below :)
Tales of Tumiun is a video series I am working on where a cast of multiple intriguing characters share wondrous tales through art and storytelling, both visual and spoken, to uncover the world of Tumiun. I have been working on this worldbuilding project through art and Dungeons & Dragons for almost ten years now, and have amassed a grand collection of stories, sketches, paintings, maps, and other curiosities. To combine this passion with a love for filmmaking, I have now started this channel, to bring you inspiration and adventure.

Everything you see in this video was imagined, illustrated, filmed, edited, narrated and created by me, Rick Hertel.
Bro, I cannot emphasize what an absolute triumph this is. I quite literally added it to a playlist for motivation when I feel burnt out. The thought that one guy's tireless passion of a world he'd so meticulously created could make such a fucking dope ass final product is so inspiring. This is more engaging than 90% of the storylines I see in AAA pieces of media nowadays. You should be so so proud of yourself, my guy. I wish you the best and I so look forward to everything you do in the future with your buckets of talent
The kindness of your words is truly overwhelming! I am so glad to hear you liked the video so much, it was a lot of work but comments like yours make every hour I put into this worth it :)
I can't wait to share more of my world with you, thanks again so much!
Your video about spending 10 years building your world was randomly recommended to me and now I'm going back through all the videos on this channel and eagerly waiting to see more of your world
same :)
Same here. Amazing work!
Same, lol
same
Same. Here for this.
This is exactly what I want, World building and map making, every other channel is just tutorials and I dont need tutorials I want to just watch someone world build while I world build my own world.
This is some of the most high quality world-building I've ever seen, truly amazing.
Thank you so much!
This is what UA-cam is made for to me
UA-cam has allowed so much talent to be shared with us. Traditional “entertainment” can’t hold a candle to these creators!
The Cartographer has a great voice for storytelling. But this video is very good, very interesting to see how the world works and the view from the Cartographer's eyes. Can't wait for more.
I went on a world-building rabbit hole last night and found your channel. This is everything I dream of doing with my world-building. You are incredible and this is so inspirational. Thank you for introducing us to your home, Cartographer. Perhaps one day, the gods will allow our paths to cross. From one explorer to another, know that you will always be welcome in my homeland of Taidé. Should your ship ever guide you here, look for the Broken Plume Inn. You will be well kept, my friend.
Thank you so much for the kind words dear friend, if I ever find myself wandering your lands I hope you'll have saved me a seat at the Broken Plume Inn, so that we may toast on adventures to come.
Criminally underrated, how has no one seen this? I WANT MORE, TELL ME MORE.
Thanks again ;) but what would you like to see more of first? I'd like the subject of my next video to be decided by the viewers, so any particular thing that intrigues you most?
@@RicksCreations Factions, countries, or however close to that you can get in your world, I want to hear about landmarks and capital cities, numbers, I'm an analytical type of guy, if you need any help with that, I'm here.
@@eddyyt7466 all great ideas! Thanks for letting me know, I'll keep them in mind when making the next video :)
My favourite part of this world was the forgotten isles where you mentioned…..uh… the uh.. th- …what was I talking about again?
I have no clue what you're talking about ;)
@@RicksCreations is it cursed to be forgotten
This is insanely well done! Can't wait to see more and see this channel grow :D
Thank you so much! I can't wait either :)
This is probably the most beautiful world building map presentation I've seen. I can't believe this has been in my Watch Later for so long!
Thank you so much, that means a lot to me!
Oh my Goodness! Man, I have no words to describe my feelings right now. It's so inspiring. I have been thinking about my own future as a fantasy writer, but I was kinda doubting myself, thinking "maybe I'll be more useful somewhere else than being a storyteller". My friend, you have just shown your world and totally made me to go after my real passion - become a fantasy world builder. Thank you, I can't express what is happening with me right now.
THANK YOU!
Can't wait to read The Walls of the world !!!
Good luck!
I frickin love this, the production quality to the maps themselves are top-notch! This really scratches a tolkien-esque itch that I always try to achieve in my own worldbuilding and maps, yet you capture it perfectly,
Edit: Vindikfill seems super interesting.
Thank you so much, as a huge Tolkien fan myself I truly appreciate your compliment. And I'd love to talk more about Vindikfill, thanks for letting me know :)
You didn't just communicate how your world looks. You very effectively communicated how it _feels._
This is crazy to me. I’ve been building a world for around 3 years very much just on the side/once every few months for the purposes of turning it into a series of screenplays. Seeing someone like yourself flesh out a passion project to this extent has really motivated me to go even further and really see how far I can develop my own
The trees appearing as your hands opened was great
I just came across this wonderful channel and found myself, both enchanted and inspired to keep going with my own work. Keep going, good sir, and may the winds of fate be gentle with you and the ancestors of your people keep you safe and blessed.
This is so underrated. When I looked at it I was shocked to see it only has 10000 views when it deserves at least a million. The beautifully hand drawn map, the soothing music and voice and the perfect editing and illustration fit so well together it is like a movie. A true masterpiece!
Wow, thank you so much!
Love the world building, and storytelling along with the visuals of your map!!
Man I love this it gives me the vibes that I’m a wondering traveler that met you and now your telling me story’s bye s fire I love it when people tell the story’s about there fantasy world this why it’s Soo fun
My God, this video is beautiful! The animations, the production, and the art and world itself -- all gorgeous!!
yeah those little animations are dope af
Thank you, dear Cartographer for introducing me to your home world. This is a master piece.
This is incredible. As a pretty huge Tolkien fan I can't wait for stories to start being told in this world.
So excited to witness the start of this creator’s content, such amazing skill all around, beautiful! Can’t wait to see what’s in store. Personally I would love to learn about the creation myth(s) first to also understand better ho the different races relate to each other.
But whatever you decide to show next, I am strapped in for it!
Thanks you, I'll be glad to have you along for the ride!
And that's a great idea for a video, one of my favorite subjects, I think the Bard might be best suited to take you through all of the various legends of creation! Stay tuned ;)
Man an entire book series should be made
This is amazing. How do you not have more subscribers!?!?!?! It's astonishing that I've only just found you! I'm sharing you
Perfectly done bro. I’m cartographer and land surveyor. It hits me right where my heart is that you used that as your catalyst to invite people into world building(another love of mine)
BEAUTIFUL MAPS TOO
That means so much to me, coming from an actual cartographer! Much love
Your content is such an inspiration to those of us who also understand the depth of obsession that is worldbuilding. I am 8 years into my own world, ever changing as it is. I have created it for my DnD players to get lost in, but I can't help personally but get lost in yours. Maybe someday in the future we will get the joy of your content in print, so we may all get lost in Tumiun. I would love nothing more than to run my players through a campaign in this glorious world!
HOW COULD youtube not recommend this to me? Insanely great quality of story telling, I'm subscribing.
Starting to worldbuild too, kinda wanna start with small stories and ideas until i can weave the small elements together to very slowly progress to grander things. You channels inspired me to finally get it going. ❤
This just bought back the child in me who first saw the lord of the rings. This video just gave me the same chills as the movie did back in the day. THANK GOD FOR U BROOO🙏
That might be one of the greatest compliments I've ever received, thank you so much for the kind words!
This is so, so beautiful. I know literally nothing about D&D but this is so interesting and comforting in a way. I would love to read a story taking place in Tumuin.
I don't even know where to start... I loved this. Amazing job. The artwork is fantastic, the mapmaking is ridiculously impressive, and the lore is captivating. I applaud your work. Congratulations.
And to answer the final question, I would love to hear more about the main central continent, and then about the Silm, the continent with no trees. The history there intrigues me.
Words cannot describe how happy I am when I found this video. This is a great video and I can't wait to check out more when I'm done with this one!
One of the most incredible worlds I have ever seen. I can’t wait to see more of this world. The storytelling, the history, the narration was all excellent. Truly wonderful.
Thank soo much man, your really inspired me to restart my old world, thank you for saving me from some dark times, keep up the good work!! ❤
Glad I could be of help, your kind words are much appreciated ♥️
It’s always great to see people sharing the same passion and presenting it so amazingly.
I am also working on a world called Terrademia, which is located entirely underground. The deeper you travel to the worlds core the faster time passes and the more you get corrupted by an unknown force, fueled by the very river that grants life to the worlds inhabitants. In my novel, yet to be written, a group of adventurers gets the task of stopping the river from flowing, destroying the source of evil, but also cutting all beings from theirs source of life until said source of evil has been destroyed. There is more to it, but it would be too much to cover in a YT comment. Great video and greetings from Germany!
Just discovering this channel and I can't wait to watch all of your wonderful videos. You've given me valuable inspiration and enjoyment. Thanks!
This is amazing. Great story, narration, visuals. So engaging and inspiring! I'm so glad that UA-cam brought me to your videos today. ❤
Just watched your most recent video and am now going through from the beginning to watch all of them. This is so impressive and inspiring. I had started a short story in the high fantasy genre and dropped it, but I now want to return to it after watching this. Can't wait to see more! Your artwork is awesome!
This is some unique storytelling right here. Clearly very dedicated and carefully crafted. I have to admit when I saw the video about how World-building had changed your life and got introduced to your content, part of me was thinking there were going to be a few dozen videos. That was just what I thought at the time. I was indeed surprised when I came back to only see a handful but now that I am watching the first of this series, I see why. And I am here for it. I am very much so here for it. This is quite relaxing and I like that this can be digested wither while watching the video or just by listening to the audio. You give a bit of a treat to both with the well build audio and sounds and the visuals representing what you are talking about.
I'm so glad I found your channel. As a fellow homebrew world DM (I watched your "how worldbuilding changed my life" video too) I'm finding this insanely beautiful and inspiring, I'm getting chills just listening. Will be consuming all your content this afternoon and then pacing up and down waiting for more! Keep up the gorgeous work
This is something out of ordinary, Thanks for introducing us to Timiun. It feels like a place where I could go and live. Eager to explore more.
I'm really enjoying the tour. You have opened a door and invited us to sit and listen to the tale. The name of your protagonist is familiar, unassuming but still mysterious. How long has he lived? How much longer does he expect to live? Will he achieve his personal quest? Why did he begin traveling? Why did he come home?
My world is developing and it is very much like Earth, not just in its flora and fauna, not just in its seasons and climate, but even in the major landforms and oceans.
The birthplace of man is in the area we call Lybia. There tribes and clans roam in their near stone age existence as hunter-gatherers. Some settled on the north shore and supplemented their diet with the bounty of the sea and gathered other benefits from it also. This nation, such as it is, goes back before recorded history and the oral history is often too fantastic to believe.
Dwarves lived in two regions according to what is known. One group lives in the mountains and hills of the Alps north of Italy, although neither names are known in their world. The second group of Dwarves live in the mountains east of modern Turkey, north of Iraq and that general area.
Elves live in smaller regions, concentrated but not so numerous. A great Elven community exists on the Iberian peninsula, but smaller communities exist where modern Sicily and Crimea are today.
A fantastic race of Dragon Men live in the region we call Greece, with the barren rocky terrain suits their temperament.
A race of smaller folk, a race that thrives among trees and Meadows, live in an unspoiled wooded land in the area bordering on the Adriatic Sea to the southwest. They are very reclusive but somehow thrive among the fearsome creatures that hunt in the forests teaming with game.
Orcs and Half-Orcs live to either side of the men on the southern shore of the Great Ocean, the name used for the Mediterranean Sea in their culture. The struggles with the Men, the Half-Orcs and the Orcs keep them strong but not expanding, or at least very little.
That's a start to my world. The current era is two-score or more generations in the future from the times when the first written history was laid down in The Tomes of Time in the land called The Nation, which was nothing like The Great nations of today.
Very cool!
Amazing video. So perfect! I have seen so many videos of people's world builds but none as enchanting, embracing and as yet simple as this. I just want to explore it all.
This is everythingggg!! your story telling is so satasfying to experience this gives me so much motivation to actually build the worlds i cant stop thinking of so thankyou! This is such an awesome world ARGHh
You did great! The quality of shots and story telling, awesome. Love this ancient look.
This is fantastic!!! I am awestruck. It is so detailed and intricately thought out. You can tell you have put your heart and soul into this. I love the twist on Norse Mythology you've used with the All Father tree and the dragon buried under the lake who will rise and bring with him the end of the world
I just so happened to be at the gym and accidentally clicked on UA-cam when switching music and this was the first video on my UA-cam homepage and immediately without even looking at what the account was about the title got me and I instantly subscribed and now I’m hooked! Keep making more videos brother!
I love it. Look so unique and magical 🧚🏽🔮 Thank you for sharing and creating this amazing project of your art
This is amazing I love the storytelling and the art I'd love to learn more about your world I'm also very curious about the walls surrounding the continents.
Thank you so much :)
I could talk about the Walls for hours, so I might just make the next video about them, thanks for the suggestion!
That was one fantastic introduction to what looks like a gorgeous world. I can really see the passion and love you have put into this creation throughout the years. Your introduction to the world had really peeked my interest. There so many interesting places to get to know. As a person how has finally started to worldbuilding with my own characters and world this was really inspiring and makes me want to dive deeper into my own story. I look forward to watching all the other videos you've done. I'm sure they'll all be fascinating!
Wonderful video! Hearing about the broad strokes of this world is inspiring - it has my mind running with ideas of of my own! I love drawing maps for my own worldbuilding and would love to hear about how you age/weather your paper!
Looking forward to more!
Thank you so much, I'm very glad to hear that I was able to inspire you, that's why I do what I do! I'm planning on doing some 'real life' videos as well, where I discuss how I go about making my art and videos, and I'll be sure to show how I weather paper for props!
Incredible video, I had no idea that content quite like this existed and I really love this.
Dang. You must be one awesome dungeon master!! 😎
This video is beautiful! What an amazing introduction to the world of Tumiun. I can’t wait to watch even more videos exploring this world. The worldbuilding is incredible, and the presentation is stunning.
Sad I’m only now seeing this. How cool it would’ve been to be here for the start and to be along for the whole ride.
Don't worry, I'm only just getting started :)
Amazing video! I'm already in love with Timiun!
As I am secretly a world building myself, though in a very different setting, I get so inspired by your work. Makes me want to mix some of my own ideas with yours.
I just watched this video after discovering your channel on your video about world building changing your life. I absolutely loved that video btw, and this one.
I used to world build too actually, with a best friend that passed away, and then after a year, I just stopped. You just gave me a nostalgia that I am so happy to experience again. Thank you, and thank you for following your heart and making a life out of something I definitely had a dream of. 💚
P.s that world tree animation was dope as hell!!!
THAT WAS INCREDIBLE!! just wow. not only are your cartographic skills phenomenal, your video skills are top notch. this is beautiful in every way, i'm in complete awe. also, as someone with audio processing problems, i really really appreciate the hand-written subtitles!
What an inspiration this is
One of the best youtube videos about worldbuilding!
@ricks creations I would really like a video on how you create your maps. This video as well as all your videos are incredible, your voice acting to your camera skills to your story telling. This literally made me start to world build,so thanks I wish you all the best and god speed with the next video.
This is probably the most captivating content creator out there. The calm manner and the beautiful artwork encapsulates this world so perfectly. You should be so proud. Im aspiring to make my own world and you are really helping me understand the dynamics of worldbuilding. Keep up the good work bro
Just stumbled on to this channel, this world you have built seems amazing. And the way you tell the stories about it makes me want to sit by a could bonfire and listen and get lost in them. Hope to see a long series of characters living in this world! I would totally buy a lorf of the rings or game of thrones style ling form novel series set in this place!
This was awesome, can't wait to see more! There is so much I want to learn more about.
This video is truly incredible :o honestly im shocked by the quality of the entire production and execution.
amazing, can't wait to see more of Tumiun❤
You asked what we wanted to see, and I want to see a map. But one done by the hand of a cartographer from another realm. See what the differences are. If you compare ancient maps from our own history, you get wildly different accounts of size and shape. It's really astonishing to see
This is so freakin cool! Amazing work!!
This was a very nice and inspiring video to watch. Love to see how you do this with a great passion and the way it was done before (with the ink pen and such) Very nice to hear the stories you tell about the places you create. I'm very much looking forward to watching more of your video's. Keep it up you are doing great.
I think you have inspired something new for me yet familiar in a way,I read and visit worlds often yet it's never hit me to create. Thank you I love story's and this was one that has givin me something more,I hope I can learn to create like you.
Watching you draw while talking about the world is just breathtaking. Amazing job!
¡No abandones!!! Beautiful and inspiring ❤
The production quality is insane! Take my like and subscription. I hope you grow as a channel, this is just absurdly well done.
Thanks so much! I appreciate that :)
@@RicksCreations Would it be possible if I write a fanfiction based on this world? I do not want to make any profit off of it. I just think the world is beautifully abstract yet detailed at the same time. A perfect canvas for a writer like me.
@@roblox.12a28 I would take that as a huge compliment, and I think you should do whatever I've inspired you to do, though I should also add that I hope to inspire people to build their own worlds as well! But you have my blessing, as long as you give credit where credit is due. Also keep in mind that this world has been worked on for almost ten years, what you see in this video is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what I've already established :)
@@RicksCreations Thank you so much! I will wait for further releases then. I would like to see some of your crafted creations before I started a fanfiction of mine.
@@roblox.12a28 Sounds great, stay tuned! :)
This is beautiful and outstanding. I’m a world builder myself and hope to one day share my creation with the world in its fully realized vision, just as you have. 👏
Your most recent video was recommended to me and I loved that so much that I've come back to watch everything else. I feel as though this is what UA-cam is truly made for. Astounding work, good sir. And all luck to you. I'll be here for the rest!
I remember when I first saw the teaser! This is great! Absolutely love everything about this! :D
And I remember your comment! Thanks for being a fan since the beginning 😊
You are a most excellent storyteller. The art and accompanying music are no less formidable.
I lead a collective worldbuilding project of similar scale and I know how much work a video like this is.
I'll actual listen to the videos on your channel to keep myself motivated.
I love this!!! This has captivated me
I am IN LOVE with this world. I really feel inspires to start writtiong stories
I loved it! I am looking forwards to the future of this channel. On thing I would like to see especially would be the lore of the Kataklysmus. What exactly happened there and which force could be so strong to shatter an entire continent...
Keep it up!
Beautiful, impressive and inspiring. Amazing work!
This is absolutely brilliant and so well made!
Simply... fascinating.
This is incredible! I instantly fell in love with your channel
Phenominal I love it thank you for sharing
So inspiring, absolutley love your content❤❤
This is absolutely amazing, I found your channel today, and I’m gonna binge watch the rest of your videos tomorrow, I don’t have time right now lol. But actually, like, this was amazing, I got motivated to continue working on my fantasy world again because of this :)
You’re really underrated
13:05 I got chills! Extremely talented, wow.
Wow, this was wonderful to watch! You have a talent creating emotions by showing your world and telling storys.
The quality of your work is really outstanding.
Okay... hands down... this is artistically valuable. There's so much heart and time in it and a very inspiring storyteller. You can be sure that I will follow your journey. I'm not working on my own world, but on my own contemporary fantasy series. And after watching your latest video where you talked about the 10 years you've been exploring your world, it just confirms to me how important it is to love the process of creation. No matter how long it takes. And man ... This is kind of a synchronicity. My goal with my novel is to create an immersive experience. But I wasn't sure whether it would really be well received. And then your video showed up in my home feed. Maybe I will now find the courage to explore my own path a step further.
Thank you for this experience. 💜
This is truly beautiful. I love these videos. Keep it up.
I always had several ideas, thank you for motivating me a lost the fear from telling my own stories❤
Excellent video! Your storytelling is incredible, very engaging and so interesting, love the production! Can't wait to see more work from you!!
Much appreciated! :)
I have never been this early to a channel and I cannot wait to be here for all of it! I love maps and I love fantasy worlds. And you've brought them together wonderfully. I want to see maps of cities and of the dragon continent, please!
Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words :)
I'd love to do some city maps in a future video, great idea! And I'll be sure to share more about Avanima, soon hopefully!
you are really talented ngl i have not seen a world with this huge quality' the map is beautiful and you really inspired me to make my own world the become a world builder... keep up with your work
This is absolutely incredible and equally inspiring! I can't wait to learn more about this world!
If i had to choose which land to explore first I would have to go with Avanima and the history of the dragons
Thanks! Great suggestion, I'll keep that in mind :)
