- In this video I picked up a really nice 1970 Evinrude that had some issues running. Let's go through this motor and I will show you HOW TO make a problem go away and have a good running outboard.

Back in the day I was a OMC mechanic. Worked on a lot of these. Spark and fuel check 183, 614 times. Pull the flywheel, replace points and condenser. Gap points and check coils. Only had to replace coils once in all my years of twisting wrenches.
Carbs were often encased with oil crud and needed to be placed to be disassembled and the body placed in carb cleaner. Replace float value and pin. Repack high and low speed jets. Screw them back in. Back off about 2 and 1/2 turns for baseline setting and then you should be ready to go. Out on the water adjust jests lean and rich. Have fun...
When I had a coil issue I just replaced the "whole" mag plate that had all parts set to fac specks.

I have a 72 Johnson 9.5 I’m trying to fix and enjoy leaning from your videos. I saw somewhere that old timers like the J6 plugs because they run hotter. Keep up the good work
That is correct. The J6C will idle much better. Toss the cheapo Chinese plastic carb floats, they weigh more and screw up the mixture.

That motor looks like its within one week of being new they were so well made. I know those motors like the back of my hand and you taught me something with the wire location. I use those Chinese coils now too sometimes I will have to look at that wire location issue in the future thanks great video. I have always used OMC coils and German coils in the past didnt have that problem your videos are very informative ...Glenn

Thanks for being so detailed , working on a 1978 15HP motor now,, same problems no spark and lots of worn out timing ignition advance parts,, will add bushings and hope for the best!

When I set points I adjust the first to spec and the second set I adjust with a self powered test lamp to open exactly 180 deg from when the first set opens. Really helps with idle.

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina I used a stick with a hole in it and a nail for a pointer placed over the crankshaft. And marked the breaker plate at exactly 180 deg apart. Initially with just setting the points to the correct gap the opening of the points was probably 20 to 30 deg off from 180 for the opposite set of points.

Yes as you can tell I was pleasantly surprised
The original points had a convex shape on the movable side of the points. As they get worn in the contact point becomes larger. I remember that from the factory clinic I went to in 1962. Funny how things like that pop up in my head sometimes.

I have a 1964 evinrude 18hp fastwin and it looks identical to yours. It's been a great engine. I now have fuel issues. been thinking about just selling it.
Well if you were close I would buy it off of you. Fuel system is a simple one on these. New pump and carb kit and you would be back in business.
I bought a 9.9 mercury from a boat dealer it was used but ran great. So out on the lake I went having fun till it died this was the first weekend and he said he would go half and half if it needed anything. So I took it back and got it fixed he said good news it’s fixed but my half was 150.00$. I paid it and back on the lake till the next weekend and crap it died again. So I hung it on a rack till a guy ask what I wanted for it and not be happy with it I gave it to him. He took it home and fixed a wire and it started first pull for him. I guess he sold it. But the boat dealer has gotten BAD reviews from me ever sence. I won’t go back to him for anything. The next closest boat place is 35 miles more but that’s where I go.
this is precisely why I learned to do the work myself and I do these videos to help others do the same.

Got one just like it and just as clean . Guy i bought it from restored it . Electric start stopped working. Got that fixed now it shocks you when you touch anything metal on it

I believe that is the same basic powerhead as the 1957 18 hp I worked on / un seized..... I would be surprised if that motor has 20 hours on it.... very cool

Weather has tuned cold here. Believe me if a warm day is on the horizon we will put it on the water
A lot of times the tune up can be improved with the proper tool to set the points. The tool goes on the crankshaft , has a pointer that passes over the outside of the stater plate. On the outside edge of the stater plate are 2 lines cast onto it, they are 1/4 inch apart. when the stater plate is rotated by hand the points should open electrically checked with a test light.

You'd be surprised how much better that engine would run if dropped a can of Seafoam in 5 gallons of 40-1 mix fuel. Run it wide open for 20-30 minutes then have a glass smooth idle. I have one like it( Johnson) and have to pull the flywheel occasionally to clean the points for better fire to plugs. I've had mine since 1975, bought used, and have used it since.
It's running much better since I did some more tweaking. I have used this mixture to clean engines. I will most likely run some through. Thanks for watching.
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina Good video Michael. I am working on a 1974 25 hp Johnson that I am having the same trouble fine tuning the cam linkage and the carb to allow for a smooth idle. The coughing and quitting at low idle is a problem. A video on your ideas on "tweaking" would help with ideas toward dealing with these issues. Thanks for your help and insight.
it says TOP on the timing cam to indicate up. not top dead center (although it is close enough run),in order to set your point gap use the widest part of the cam where the woodruff key is. so set your .020 gap to that key.and it will run a bit better.

The low speed adjustment was disconnected. What would be a good starting point?Would I turn it all the way in to the right?And then back it off one and a half turns like someone once told me?
I got a 71 18 horse evinrude when I unscrewed the drain screw on the lower end about a half shot of water came out the oil seemed good and clear looked new , any thoughts

I been working on a.used 1972 evinrud 18202r. I got.the spatk, clean the carb, set the contact point to 0.02 but I cant start. Pleaee help if you have something in mind.

Yes I have, I am using a go pro now and I am trying to monitor the sound level better in editing. It can still be improved.
How do you feel about using aftermarket ignition/carburetor parts vs.the OEM parts? Aftermarket is cheaper but are are you better off with OEM replacement parts?
Well some of the OEM is still made overseas today. So some of it is good and some is not so good. OEM is better though from what I have experience.
do you have a parts list for these old 18hp? i just picked one up thats pretty rough. plan on going through it like you did in this video, just need to find all the seals, impeller, etc etc. any help with finding parts?

This one doesn’t have a pee hole. It sprays out just above the water line
The tattle-tail feature appeared on OMC motors round 1976 depending on models.
What is the brand of your points? Did you get the coils from Amazon? I have 2 ordered from Amazon that are the same color and wires are located on them where yours are. The green one you have looks like the the ones I ordered from Amazon. Does your green one that is still on your engine have the wire location like the one you couldn't use?

Sounds like she may be a bit rich on the air/fuel mixture. Some of it can be your two stroke mix as well.

They are mid 60's, one is a 6hp and the other is 9.8hp

Hey Man. Hope all is well. I have a 71 18 HP Fastwin. I have to replace kill switch also. Question, does the circuit complete to kill the engine? I just need to put a new rocker or toggle switch in Correct?
Yes just a new switch. It grounds out the spark. Doesn't need the kill switch to run, just to shut it down.

Why would a fastwin not get spark on the bottom cylinder
could be a couple reasons. Coil, points, wiring. You just have to track it down.

The high side is to Rich lean high side then dial the low that is why it was rich and still to lean on iddle

They were not Sierra. They have a funky looking name. Got them off of Amazon. The ohm reading on them are good. Just that one wire in the wrong location. Thanks for watching

I don't feel he mislead me on purpose. He just had a little bit of trouble with it that wasn't able to be figured out. I have a lot of patience when it comes to stuff like this and I hang on like a pit bull till I figure things out.

It might be if I get it running a little better. I was thinking of keeping it, it’s such a clean neat old motor but I’m not married to it. I only sell them if they perform as they should

A coil locating ring is great at dispensing one from a lot of frustration. It insures simple hassle-free proper clearance with the flywheel. I quit using an impact to turn my motors over because I've cracked a few points cam gear because of overnighting the flywheel nut....mostly on 15hp and under with aluminum flywheel...just sayen...

It is what I do, buy them non running for a good price then video the repair to help others get their old outboards back on the water.
