The thing I learned the hard way:
Nobody cares if you have Alto or RCF speakers - but everyone cares if you have drop outs or feedback;) So good mics is a MUST!
No trust in a WiFi systems.

As someone who uses these mics extremely often for video work, I 100% agree with this video. We, as professionals, should be using professional gear and these arent that for this use case. Great for video but not for live sound. I also recently bought the same mics as you for ceremonies and for the same reason lol. Really sets the tone for the rest of the night if something happens for ceremony.

@@ryoukos DJIs all the way. I have both and my biggest issue is that I can't access the transmitter settings without connecting to a computer and using their software which is EXTREMELY irritating if you need to change a setting without a laptop handy. You can change everything remotely on the receiver with the DJIs. Also, if you're using the internal recording on the transmitters you have to use Rode's proprietary software to export the files off of the transmitters. This took me hours last time dealing with the buggy software and it has to convert the files to the format you use. With the DJIs they mount like a flash drive and you just copy the wave files off. Takes seconds and it's very easy.

Just ran across this video. 100% agree. I think the DJI are a good unit for their Intended purpose, not for Wedding PA duty. Close and personal video duty for a quick podcast, or vLog ok..but wedding, i wouldn't trust it. We have used the DJI for Zoom/Teams type streams where the speaker was right in front of the camera and monitoring thru headphones, worked out great. However, I tested them with a dance instructor during an event at a large venue with about 80 people in the dance floor. Figured since the transmitter on the DJI is so small it would make it comfortable for the instructor and a quick and easy setup, but tried it twice and either I ran into drop outs once the crowd was in the floor with the instructor, or it just picked up feedback too easy no matter what we tried (eq, speaker placement, speaker height, volume control, etc.). I would not trust this at a wedding event unless it was a VERY small group of people or location, and only as an absolute backup-had-no-choice but to use them.

Great review Aaron. I’m glad you use your channel to provide real reviews on DJ gear. You don’t endorse products that are garbage. The issue with the DjI microphones is that they use the 2.5 GHZ frequency, same as WiFi. That frequency is too congested and the signal is never strong enough to maintain constant communication with the receiver.

Nah not unless it's the brand new Rode version, which I haven't tested yet. It's supposed to essentially be a copycat of the DJI. If you're talking about the wireless go 2, it's unreliable unfortunately. The DJI is the best on the market from everything I've seen. The Go 2 doesn't have nearly as much signal range and it's much more prone to cutting out if it's fighting for a clean signal, the battery life is really weak, and it's actually difficult to know how much battery there is on that unit. I was given the DJI recommendation by a high end videographer when he saw that I was using the Go 2. He told me to make the change immediately, and I jumped on his suggestion once I did some research.

Hey Aaron, great video, I use the Hollyland Lark M1 wireless system, It is much lighter than the DJI Systems, Like any piece of equipment, you have to find what works for you and like anything else you need to have a back up ready to go. I have never had a problem or dropout, since I started using these and most importantly. No only do I test the mics, but I also put the officiant in place to pretest the mic as well. I am on the East coast so we are doing events in Philly, NY, NJ Delaware... and I have had no issues, Paired with my everse 8 it has been the perfect Ceremony rig. Keep up the good work

But I was super leery of doing it and I'm glad I didnt bite on me without first seeing somebody do a real world test... Lavalier / lapel mics have always been a concern of mine for close shuffling noise that you're inevitably going to have with normal movement

💯. Done hundreds of weddings and every ceremony always gives me anxiety. If I could spend thousands to guarantee a drop out would never ever happen, I'd do it. There's no way I'd risk a ceremony using a $300 product using 2.4ghz band. There's already enough stress without having to worry about inference.

I am curious if you were to plug in a real lav mic, to the DJI transmitter, if it would sound better. Also, that was some crazy distance that you were set up from the ceremony area. With all of the battery options available, I would definitely want to be closer to the guests and officiant.
I currently use a combo of Sennheiser and EV Lav mic systems and would really love if something as simple as the DJI system would work. That would definitely simplify my setup. Appreciate your videos and honest critique!

I have this DJI mic and have only used it to jump the signal from one speaker to another at a ceremony. I recently had an officiant want to use it instead of a handheld (I havent made the lav mic investment yet), and I didn’t have drop outs but it wasn’t the best sound and it made me nervous as hell the whole time! Hey bud, I’ve been using these mics for ceremonies for quite some time, here’s my honest opinion on them, never use both mics at the same time. It’s just not smart enough to handle two at a time. One or the other keeps cutting out, so I stopped doing that. The other tip I have would be to not be as far back as you were in that video, the third tip I have is to use a Lavier, mic, that way you can clip the transmitter anywhere higher on the shoulder to have better line of sight. The last tip I have is to wait till everyone is present for you to open that case up, because, from what I understand, every time you open the case, it automatically searches and finds the clearest signal, so for whatever reason, I just think it’s safer to wait till everyone is there, so that their cell phones or whatever have you that might cause interference or clutter the wave bands can be already there by the time it searches for the best channel. With that being said, still love your videos and keep at it bro! Next time message me hahaha I won’t leave you on read. 😂

First off, you're a mile away from the action, so of course you might have some issues with signal strength. I would never set up where you did. Move your system to the side of the seats far enough away to stay out of photos. And if you're worried about the position of the mic, then you should drop it in his pocket and add a lav. You can also clip it to officiant's binder or book if he's using one. It'll pick everyone's voices up perfectly. I've done this a couple of times now with absolutely no issues.

🤔I would never use something 2,4 GHz (or 5) for that job, at least not so far from the bride & groom as in Aarons video. If the receiver had antennas and I was fx placed just out to the side left/right and with the receiver on top of the speaker and line of sight from transmitters to receiver......ma-a-a-y-y-b-e-e-e I would consider it, the small size is appealing. But something in the UHF spectrum like the Deity THEOS kit (1100$ 1rec.+2 transmit+ 2 lav mics+SMA antennas+case) would probably be better.
But let us all watch Justins videos the next ½ year, if he suddenly switches to other wireless-ceremony mics we all know why 😉😀But I give Justin a👍for trying something different and sharing it - new ideas is always welcome.

New to weddings...😂 Thank you for this video! Can you recommend a budget friendly wireless system option ($200

    • @AaronStrawn
      @AaronStrawn  7 місяців тому +1

You got it! Ok- so for weddings, I can't recommend a mic under $200. I will say, that if you go budget with mics, you are risking dropouts, feedback and other issues. It's the LAST thing you want to happen at a wedding. Try and get your budget higher for weddings. That being said..lol...Phoenix Pro has some handhelds that have been pretty good and are in that budget

all my ceremonies are outdoors so I will always prefer wireless handheld mics because it consistently puts out the best quality. With clip ons there are too many variables to worry about : wind , what the officiant is wearing (where they will place it) , voice level. The best officiants I know prefer handheld.

i experimented with my Rode Go2 mics along with my usual Sennheiser lav mic. They worked fine for the bride and groom, the officiant gets the real lapel mic. Additionally I provide a wireless Sennheiser handheld mic as a back up mic also good for readings. I also use a lav mic connection for my Rode mics with a white lav for the bride and black for the groom. Videographers love it as they just take a feed off my mixer Aux out to get the clean sound. BTW, I set up a full two speaker and mixer system for my weddings unlike you lazy Everse 8, one microphone with an iPad system DJ's 🙂 - Hugs

Where the hells your parametric EQ? As a pseudo audio guy (that's me!) With hundreds of live audio gigs under my belt (also me) i was wondering how you ran a hot wireless mic strait through a live speaker without a mixer board in order to cut out the bass? (of course using these entry level hot wireless mics in a live venue takes brass balls!)

    • @AaronStrawn

When I watched his video, I thought he said he was using a Shure Mic plugged into those. Did you try the same, or were you using a built in mic to those? I personally use a JTS set of lapels or a Sennheiser depending on which rig I take out.

Anything running in 2.4GHz is a no-go for me in a live audio situation. A single human body can/will block 2.4GHz signals very easily. Couple that with 100+ cell phones showing up at showtime clogging up the wifi spectrum makes the DJI mics (and all similar products like XVive, Rode, etc) an absolutely imminent disaster.

I'm not saying these are dope or nope but we can't judge products on cost, or that's a stupid metric I'd say.
A $2000 kit can drop out too no?
1 test is not really proof of anything.
Maybe they suck? I bought some and am using them first time Saturday and we'll see what's up.
No hate for premium gear, I'm definitely not afraid to pay for quality but I'm also never dismissive of cheaper gear either. These days and technology has changed the rules on expense vs performance on too many things.

I have the Rode version, and it claims 900 feet or something. I got 40 feet MAX. You have to be in DIRECT line of sight. Good luck if someone stands up. Would never trust these for such important things as a ceremony. They are cute though! Anything running on 2.4 can't be taken seriously for professional use.

I wish I saw this before I bought them. It’s only great when the receiver is close with direct line of sight. DJI is full of crap with the range. It’s not true. The tests at home were great. I thought I hit the lotto. Until the wedding day.
I had to pick up my speaker and receiver and move closer because all of a sudden it sounded like my officiant was talking with a mouth full of water. I even tested it before. But the cellphones and people standing is another thing.
So if anyone saw this video, save yourself the money and headache. It is NOT for pro wedding DJs. Wish it were. It was so simple to use. Shame.
