The Truth About Sheriff Pat Garrett
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 чер 2024
- On the night of July 14th, 1881, Sheriff Pat Garrett killed Billy the Kid. In doing so, he helped create a legend and ensured that his legacy would forever be intertwined with that of the notorious outlaw. And let’s be honest - it isn’t that great of a legacy. Many consider Garrett a coward, at best, a no-good backstabbing Old West Judas who betrayed his friend for a handful of silver. Moreover, Pat is also labeled as a rank liar and an egomaniac. A glory seeker would turn on his mother if that meant earning a little dough and building up his reputation. And, over 26 years after he gunned down The Kid, Pat himself would be shot and killed under similar circumstances. A murder that to this day remains unsolved. Who killed Pat Garrett? How accurate is the narrative surrounding the former Sheriff of Lincoln County? Is all the hate deserved? And who was Garrett anyway? What was his life like before he met the Kid? And what became of Pat in the decades following that fateful night at Fort Sumner? This is a compilation of a previous series released on Garrett. Enjoy! #history #wildwest #western

My father, a former lawman in the late 1940"s, was a business man in the 1960's. He was based in Texas, but frequently was in New Mexico, where he was introduced to Jarvis Garrett. Garrett gave my father an autographed copy of his father's book. Upon my father's death in 1982, I came into possession of this book. It was an interesting read to say the least. And being a lawman for decades myself, I must admit it was a source of inspiration to me. My family were all peace officers since 1882, and ended with my own retirement in 2002. And every one of us were involved in shootings with armed fellons during our careers. Being of a family of lawmen, I was a great admirer of the lawmen of the west. Of those I held highest was Bass Reeves. He was uncompromising a great peace officer, and among my childhood heroes.
Bass Reeves seems to have always get his man from what I have read over the years. If I had to pick some one to go after a real bad man it would be Reeves or Jack Coffee Hays.
Bet he had plenty of stories
Lawmen are just people like you and me. Folk's seem to forget they eat, $hit, and zip thier pants like anyone else does. I have great respect for anyone that goes out daily and deals with dangerous people.
Thanks for sharing your story.
Crazy how my Texas history class rarely mentioned the cattle wars of West Texas and New Mexico
Thumbs up before I even listen to it
Exactly!
Thumbs up to your comment before I pressed play

You are brilliant, Josh! I discovers this channel maybe less than a week ago and have binged so many of your videos , particularly the complications. I usually put on podcasts as background noise, but I absolutely can’t do that with these, they’re too darn interesting not to pay full attention.
Hey thanks man
Thank you Josh. If I don't hear from you before Sunday, Happy Father's Day!! For you, and all the dads out there...
Happy father’s day!
When I was commercial fishing we had an old cook named Dutch. The food was great but don’t watch him cook it lol. Sweat would run down the tip of his nose a drop on the flat griddle and sizzle

My niece and I give you two thumbs up for the extravaganza!
Thanks Jeffrey and Jeffrey’s niece!
I always get a few laughs hearing you, e.g., that you wouldn't be eating food prepared by a cook named Grunge and referring to Biily the Kid as BTK😂. It took a lot of courage to live in those times, especially trekking through Indian territory where the Commanches roamed free. I wonder what the average life expectancy was at that time.
Thanks for all the research you put into your videos.
By the way, I don't think Pat Garrett was a coward. Billy was a wily and cautious desperado who had eluded authorities time and time again so why wouldn't Garrett take whatever opportunity presented itself to do what he had to do? It was hard enough to track Billy down with little cooperation in "Billy territory," and how would it look if he allowed Billy to win again after he just recently escaped from the grips of jailers Olinger and Bell. No, it came down to either him or Billy, and just like it stated in Lee Wallace's Wanted Poster, 'Dead or Alive' so no one should blame or accuse Garrett of being a coward considering the circumstances. It was a job.
Good take
I live in ireland and I find this fascinating, I think you have a very distinctive voice, I love listening to it
Thanks for listening
Watch out boys...hes rolln those rrr'sin the intro...banger alert.
(Insert high pitched voice) But Josh….theres no way Pat killed Brushy……
PALS…
Good episode. Quick thing: Briscoe was not a partner. It was only Glenn, Garrett, and Duke starting the partnership. The three men encountered Briscoe at Frank Conrad's store at Fort Griffin. They also encountered a man named Nick Ross (alias Nick Buck) and a cook named Grundy Burns. The Garrett-Glenn party began in the Double Mountain country, approximately 100 miles north of present day Abilene.
Good info
made my evening better again. Thanks always,

Excellent series Josh. Have you ever read Killing Pat Garret The Wild West Most Famous Lawman Murder or Self Defense by David G. Thomas if so what did you think of it? I have been thinking about ordering this book
I have not but I own two other books by Mr Thomas. He seems to do very solid research.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY, JOSH!
Hope you, the little lady and the little one have a blessed and wonderful day!
Cheers from Southwest Louisiana!!
Thank you, happy Father’s Day!
I love the work you present in these videos. There are a lot of sites that are accurate as far as they know. Most of them like you try to tell history, not legend.
Glad you like them
Josh , does this comments not accept links ?
I tried 4 times but it kept disappearing...
Hmmm good question, I’ve never tried
Lets be honest, neither man was interested in a hollow type duel.
I was wrong on the tv show tombstone territory , that old show was the Tall man ,sorry
I haven’t listened yet but 3 hours? Damn Josh, you the man!
All your stuff is good! 🍻
I appreciate that!
Thx again Josh
Josh... You. Are. Awesome. Keep doing your thing!
Thanks man!
You make the best documentary’s my man, I imagine myself at a camp fire drinking coffee and just listening to u, u got a gift my man of bringing history to life
Thank you
Looks like Garrett's old lady's name, should have been, Wall Eye Garrett! 😂
@Josh-Are you sure “Juan Largo” or “Long John” was because of his tall frame? My limited Spanish would say “Juan Alto” would be more indicative of height, but what do I know? Those señoritas sure knew something!
For some reason his pistol sold for $6,030,313. For some reason it sold for way more than other lawmen and outlaws. As far as running into Wyatt November 27, 1879 in the Butter Bar in Jerome, Arizona Territory.
I’m still amazed that Garrett didn’t get a picture of Billy this was done a lot back then. There’s a picture out there is a picture of Billy and another fellow dancing and Pat playing fiddle and a picture of Billy playing cards with 3 other guys
Nothing I despise more than a disloyal sonbeach.
Nothing I love more than a three hour bloody upload.
Keep em coming J. THUMBSUP
Thank you for the rolling of your 'R' !
What a good listen for old West fans..I thought the Billy series was good..but I guess Pat got a hellavu tale to be told you did it josh that part were Garrett turn and kissed homie had me dying.. hey do you do any shows outside of westerns ? Any way thanks for the hiurs of entertainment ✌🏻

Hell yeah brother

0:47 The worst of the worst. The Rosy Cheek Gang. 🤣👍🍻
Ha
And people actually believe he would not wait no matter how long it took to get a camera and take a picture I mean that would get him in the governor's office.
I am Garrett's son because we have the same name?😅😅😅 Great episode with an honest opinion.
Ha thanks
Can you do an episode of Dallas Stoudenmire
Absolutely
@@WildWestExtravaganza as swedish i am oddly intrested in the wild west and the gunslingers pf that time, had a big book, still have it by i think his last name was or is Nash, dont know how accurate it is, but i read about John Wesley Hardin, clay allinson and all these guys, the part about Dallas always intrigued me tho. So many are mentioned in this book and i read it over and over and over again.
Like Ted Nugent says in his song "The Great White Buffalo", the Indians needed food and some skins for a roof, they only took what they needed, millions of buffalo were their proof, and then came the white dog with his thick and empty head, he couldn't see past his billfold, he wanted all the buffalo dead. No more words could have been more true, what big big shame! Luckily someone came in and saved the last small small herd, i believe those were the plains buffalo too, there was two different type of buffalo, the plains and the woodland buffalo, and one's horns were turned up while the others horns were turned down, or something like that. And the plains buffalo was the ones that numbered in the millions.
Yes!! I was going into withdrawals.
Imagine being 6 foot 4 back then 😂,
Intergalactic & Billy the Kid wow, sounds like Josh is going deep diving tonight.🤟
Space. The final frontier
Lol thats freaking funny! Thanks 🤟
Pat Garrett looked like a tweaker!
There was no food stamps , welfare or GIVERMENT housing back then so everyone was on their own to feed them selves. I.e. he was skinny as F☆○♧
This gonna be fun 😎
I wonder why they didn’t take a death pic of wild bill, I know I’m changing topic, 🤪just curious
I don’t think death photos were as common as we are led to believe. I mean, think about it…how many photos of dead old west figures can you think of off the top of your head? 10? 20?
It did occur but it was nowhere near as common as we think.
There might not have been a photographer in Deadwood at the time yet.
There probably wasn't a photographer in Deadwood at the time.
The truth of the matter is the only one that got this right and proved that he was correct was brushy Bill Roberts. He said Tom's name was Tom O. Falliard. Brushy bill is the only one that got this right even historians were calling him o'falliard.
I believe the verdict is still out
@@WildWestExtravaganzaI believe all the Brushy-believers just prove P.T. Barnum is the one who really got things RIGHT!
But Jo-osh! Brushy Bill Roberts proved that Pat the rat did NOT shoot Billy the Kid!
They grew up rich with 30 + slaves.
Seems like they were well off
There is a distinction between Bison and buffalo. Do you know which it was?
All I know is in the U.S. what we call buffalo are technically “bison bison” but back in the old days everybody called them buffalo anyway
@@WildWestExtravaganza
Everbuddy gots to git their not pickin' in.
Josh. You think Billy The Kid would stop rolling his R's when he felt like it, just because? Be You Man.
I cannot imagine making a choice based on whether or not Billy the Kid would approve haha
@WildWestExtravaganza - Not what I meant Josh. A lot of us like You for You. The rolling Rs are great. Because it's not every time. It's just when you feel it. I've actually been driving down the road and done both the Rolling R and the Ye Hay which is in the intro song.....Out Loud. With a big smile. I for one think you have a talent for this. I want to see you succeed.
None of this is true! I know because my neighbors cat is Pat Garret reincarnated and from what I can decipher from his meows the Pat Garret story is way different
I knew it!
Yeah but not close friends? Oh really, ok.
According to Paulita Maxwell they were very close friends, so there is that
The catholic diocese of ny has Billy’s baptismal record
That has yet to be proven. We can make a guess but there’s still no actual proof that he was born in NYC. His mother was living Indianapolis in the late 1860s but Billy’s name doesn’t first appear in known documents until his mother’s marriage to Antrim

Absolutely top notch work! I have a lot of respect for the work you do 🫡
Much appreciated!
Garrity was more of a criminal then Billy the kid was
How?
When you start using terms like "BFF" I tune out. I just stop the video. What are you going to tell me next that neither Billy not Garrett used Twitter? Stop it.
I use terms like that specifically to ensure that people like you tune out.
Lmao very good Josh 😅@WildWestExtravaganza
Billy was a murderer. Putting down a murderer is not snitching. Grow up.
Huh?
It's a bit more complicated than that. There wasn't actual rule of law. Some of the judges and many of the law enforcement officers were also murderers and it was kill or be killed - or try to run away and wonder if you would be hunted down, if ever found without friends who would literally have your back. Almost all the participants were guilty to a certain extent, but you have to immerse yourself in both the moral and physical context of the reality of the situation. It really was a war, an organized crime war, and the corruption goes all the way up to the top.
