He may have been set up (ie they gave him enough metaphorical rope), but he must have thought it was fine to talk like that in the studio and the commentary box when off air, so it was indefensible really.

God be with the old days of football, I think. Fantastic comment when Mr Atkinson said: "I was the one they set up."

His career is over because of his racist attitudes in the past. I dislike PC like I dislike bigots in any sport. That aside I do like Ron as he is a character. He was the best English manager Manchester United had and he was a scouser born in Liverpool. SAF AND BUSBY AND DOCHERTY were all jocks.

Will always love big Ron. Great cup winners in 83 and 85, with Whitesides goal. We were unstoppable at the beginning of the 85-86 season, but the injuries beat us alongside Ian Rush. Thank you Ron

I remember doing the security at the ryder cup in 1990 or 1991 and was on rons tent when he realised i was a fellow scouser he brought me foot and lager i said i couldn't drink on duty he said don't worry I'll make sure nothing happens and it didn't.

Great football man is Ron. People talk about Clough been the best England manager they never had but I always thought Ron would have been. He was a man for the big game and always did well in competition cups

Ron understood the DNA of Manchester United and what the fans wanted, Attacking football. Better than all the post-Fergie managers.

He wasn't successful when he managed Coventry City. Just 19 wins in 74 games. In his last dozen games, we won just one.
