    Interesting take on the SE. I was talking to a friend about the update. The SE is the only iPhone he likes, due to being the only one with a home button; for whatever reason he's really attached to it. Perhaps that's part of the market they're going for, hence keeping the old design.

    I believed that Apple would just add the A15 Bionic to the iPad Air, but when Apple unveiled the iPad Air with the M1 chip, I was blown away. This should be the best value tablet by far (or the iPad 9). I didn’t expect much from the iPhone SE, since I believe that the affordable iPhone wouldn’t get the highest end design. If 5G adds $30 to the price tag, the design will add some more. Take the iPad Air 4 and the iPad Mini 6 for example. When there was a design change in the two, the price lifted $100 more than the previous generation. For those who are fans of green, the Alpine Green and Green colors are amazing to choose. I’m expecting the color event for the iPhone 14 in the first event of 2023 since it happened here, but that’s another story. The Mac Studio was a head-turner for me because the huge specs and the M1 Ultra chip just blew in my face. I’m glad there’s a ton of ports on the machine for more of the productivity-focused users, like me. I’m a serious gamer on computers, so these specs are amazing! Other than that, that’s all I have to say. Let me know what you guys think in the replies.
    Edit: Sorry this is so long and wordy. I’m just very excited and ambitious.

      the specs on the mac studio are certainly insane for performance-per-watt and all that, but I wouldn't be excited about seriously gaming on it unless you play older games due to the current state of Crossover and Parallels builds. Reason being is that both DX12 titles and raytracing features aren't supported (theyre being worked on, but its very gradual and not an overnight thing, last roadmap update i saw was Crossover V23 will be dropping sometime next year). And unfortunately you cant just dualboot a windows bootcamp partition anymore like you could on Intel Macs, or even use an external gpu even though it has thunderbolt, due to lack of any amd or nvidia drivers for arm macos.
      This isnt to say its a bad machine by any stretch of the imagination, just being realistic as someone who has a desktop gaming pc and a 14" macbook pro for my photo and video related hobbies

    Apple is still able to "double" M1 Ultra performance by connecting 2 of them together and put it into Mac Pro for those who really need the performance similar to e.g.: the AMD Threadripper 3995wx. And when they will update MacBook Air with new design or discontinue Air and simply create new plain "MacBook" with M2, the transition will be over and finally there will be some logic in the Apple computer line-up... I think that there is no sense to create 27" iMac, as it is a waste for a good display when internals become obsolete after few years... It's better to buy Studio Display with Mac Studio and when time comes just replace Mac Studio with new one, keeping the display as good monitors can work for several years.

    • @Steamrick
      @Steamrick 2 роки тому +9

      Unless Apple is hiding yet another interface on the M1 Max chip (unlikely), they won't be able to just connect two M1 Ultra together.
      They could do a dual-socket system, but that'll have plenty of disadvantages they avoided by using direct connection in the M1 Ultra.

      Sticking two chips together doesn't double the performance, SLI and Crossfire never got double performance, and multi chip products like some of amds cards didn't double performance of the single chip, you run into issues like memory sharing and the chips communicating with each other, even when they are laced as closely together as they are in the demo you're still creating a bridge between the two which often serves as a bottleneck, so I definitely wouldn't anticipate double the performance
      Comparing this to amds offerings is not a good comparison either, apple doesn't offer up to 2 tb's of ram, 8 channel ram, pcie 4.0 and more pcie lanes, all of which are important to creators who want multiple gpus, pcie storage cards to fit multiple nvme drives, and the 1000s of other accessories that fit into a pcie slot, while this maybe perform well what Intel and AMD offer is far more flexible and robust to professionals, you can't get specialist GPUs and Asics for apple, you can for standard computers, this is a gimmick and for people doing basic professional workloads, and 128gb of soldered memory is not good, that's becoming baseline for some users, even music production can suck up a good chunk of that, this is just like the other mac's, mostly for snobs and people who buy into apples big numbers, 2.5 tb's memory bandwidth is amazing, Vega 64 had 500gb's of it and still it gave less than desirable performance compared to it's comp, that 2.5 means nothing to most people because that number doesn't decide performance, that decides bandwidth and it's reliant on the rest of the hardware to actually keep up and utilize it

    It seems they are positioning the studio to replace the 27” iMac and iMac Pro. Just that you have a small, but convenient (with ports) lump under it. Also makes a nice modular sense as you can pair that monitor with a laptop or as a second monitor on one’s pro tower. Or a first monitor if one isn’t quite mad enough to get the xdr. I happen to have a pro tower with the xdr but as my e-mail second monitor I still had to stick an ugly 4k dell on the desk. Two XDRs just seemed insane. Now I might consider getting one of these new monitors to complete my Apple fan boy since 1980 look (I had an Apple II, a 1984 thin Mac, a first Ed Mac II, and at least two dozen other Apples since 😀)

    I wonder how will they handle the GPU on the new Mac Pro, one of the benefits of the Mac Pro is relative upgradability. If this is this insane, I wonder how that Mac Pro would be.

    • @pkennethv
      @pkennethv 2 роки тому +1

      It's pretty clear to me that much of the performance benefits of the Apple Silicon chips is a result of the Unified Memory architecture (where CPU & GPU share the same RAM and both have access to it at faster speeds & lower latencies than traditional PC architectures with discrete system (CPU) RAM and VRAM). So there's no way in my mind that the Apple Silicon Mac Pro will have a discrete/removable/upgradable GPU, because the performance loss of not having the GPU on the same SOC as the CPU & RAM would be far too great.

    • @ahliang
      @ahliang 2 роки тому +1

      But will it be possible to switch whole m-series chip out?

    • @pkennethv
      @pkennethv 2 роки тому

      @@ahliang While not impossible, I think it’s EXTREMELY unlikely. There are too many downsides to doing this as well (from Apple’s perspective - as customers/users, some may disagree and think the tradeoff is worth it).
      1) Apple would need to stick to a certain socket size & pin layout, which limits flexibility when designing future generation chips.
      2) even within the same generation, taking the M1 Max and M1 Ultra as an example, they are DRASTICALLY different in shape/size, so it would be hugely impractical to package the chips in a way that would fit into the same socket. If the rumors are true that the future Apple Silicon Mac Pro will basically have a 4x chiplit die (the M1 Ultra being a 2x chiplet design), that will be an even larger physical size difference between the chips.
      3) Even Intel is having difficulty/unable/unwilling to keep the same socket spec for more than 2 gens. If you upgrade a CPU more than 2 gens apart, you need to buy a new motherboard anyways because the new CPUs use a different socket design/spec. A lot (I dare say “most”) people don’t upgrade every gen, so most people will need to buy a new motherboards when they upgrade CPUs anyways.
      3a) and this is at Intel’s “pace of innovation” - which is slow compared to Apple. If Intel has difficulty introducing new CPU features with the same socket spec, when Intel CPUs from gen to gen are relatively similar, just think about how much even more difficult it will be for Apple to introduce even more new features gen to gen while still maintaining the same socket design for multiple generations.
      3c) ok, I admit AMD has done a pretty good job at maintaining the AM4 socket…but it was not without hiccups/confusion of having to flash certain BIOS to certain motherboards which will then only support a sub-section of CPUs per BIOS. All of this is very “un-Apple” and would be counter to the image/persona likes to put fourth of “it just works.”
      4) Socketed CPUs mean CPUs will need to have an IHS (integrated heat spreader). This decreases thermal performance, which means louder fans and/or lower peak performance. With soldered on CPUs, the heatsink is typically mounted straight onto the die itself, which makes for more efficient heat transfer.
      5) Much of the cost savings of being able to upgrade the CPU comes from not having to also “re-buy” a bunch of other parts of your computer. But if you’re replacing the entire SOC, you are effectively having to “re-buy” your Neural Engine, various video encoders/decoders/accelerators, Secure Enclave, GPU, RAM, SSD, I/O controllers (bunch of Thunderbolt ports which are pretty expensive), and more…leaving the things you’re not forced to “re-buy” to only be the case itself, the power supply, possibly the cooler/heatsink. So you’re not saving nearly as much money as you would be with a traditional PC, making all the other tradeoffs mentioned above less worth it.
