    Jazz organ just doesn't get any better than this. Now that the great Jummy McGriff is also gone, I just hope there are some young guys who are inspired by this.

    Frank's groove is so locked in--sounds like the left hand of a piano. Lots of energy, but never gets in Joey D's way. Five stars.

    The song "Just in Time" was from the musical "Bells are Ringing" The plot concerned the romantic entanglements of an answering service proprietress who becomes involved in her clients lives. Judy Holliday starred in the Broadway production. Also "The Party's Over" Everybody knows that one.

    One thing I like about him, his fast stuff is correctly timed, very disciplined. I have very long fingers, watching him makes me think short-stubby fingers are better for B3. He's brilliant.

    insane stuff! one of my absolute favorities, top performance! also - why Vignola isn't more of a jazz star is a mystery to me (in this trio, Joey DeFrancesco was the biggest star by a wide margin, but in this performance they sound very even)

    Well you can see (and hear) he accents here and there on the pedals but he does that mean walkin' bass on ol' lefty!

  • @bobkay6050
    @bobkay6050 10 років тому +6

    Rick; are you serious ?? These guys are playing bass too. Left hand on lower keyboard and alternating with the footpedals. I'm one of them and we're busy with BOTH hands and BOTH feet (foot pedals for bass and volume pedal with right foot.)

    • @MegaLJ3
      @MegaLJ3 9 років тому +2

      I agree Bob. Nothing like a Hammond organ player.

    @myfriendvaseline The bassline is played primarily with the left hand, with the foot doing accent notes, to create a thump-like note that does nothing but accent the other notes being played.

  • @Mooser42001
    @Mooser42001 13 років тому

    @nutopiansg Thanks for responding. If I remember this right, a Hammond certified tech told me that the pedal sustain on the spinets involved a relay for each pedal 13 pedals. It may not have been cost-effective to put this on the twenty-five pedal models. The tone wheel device you reference was, I believe, the teleharmonium (?) which was built to supply background music on a telephone system.
    Anyway, the new B-3 MkII and others have it, making it easier to play bass lines by foot.

  • @Mooser42001
    @Mooser42001 13 років тому

    @HammondB200
    He is very good at using both his left hand and foot. When his left hand goes up two octaves to play chords, the left foot takes over.

  • @Mooser42001
    @Mooser42001 13 років тому

    @nutopiansg That's a great set-up! I'm running with an A-100 with a Leslie 45 driven from the speaker, and a Motion Sound Pro-3x with two Peavey KBA-100s for a "bottom". The Pro 3x is driven from the pre-amp, through a leslie input transformer (converts balanced pre-amp output to unbalanced line) I've got a Zoom RFX 1100 to supply reverb, delay etc. It's not perfect, but it's what I got.
    Also have an M-3 and L-100 and I use a Leslie 130 with that.
    But I want a Nord C-2 badly, to play out.

  • @DRWJD
    @DRWJD 16 років тому

    It's not how many notes but WHAT notes are played..While Jimmy Smith started it all( I'm from the same town and born on same street)Joey is one of the top 5 in the world now.

  • @rickwoodrow7049

    These Hammond guys can play with their left hand behind their backs ,and mostly do. One hand wonders they are.. They say they would give their right arm to be ambidextrous. Oscar was that kind . Others can take notes from him.

  • @bestaff
    @bestaff 12 років тому

    @ZeppelinRules ...HammondB200 is mostly correct. Since I played walking bass organ back in my musicians days, you are supposed to thump the pedal/ match it with what you are playing with your left hand. Doing this gives it power...if you don't your bassline sounds thin and weak. If you do just the pedal it sounds better on slower tunes because it doesn't pop. I think Babara D is the rare one who plays pedal bass fast/exclusively, but it can get dull after awhile. hope this helped.

  • @Mooser42001
    @Mooser42001 13 років тому

    @Mooser42001 The amount of sustain needed can be very minimal, just enough to smooth out a jump of more than a 2nd. Sometimes just the reonance in a Leslie, or a little bit of reverb will do the trick.
    Perhaps he had a dedicated reverb unit for the bass?

    My friend, local organist Moe Denham, knows JD well. Moe says, "the fatter the fingers, the better they play".

  • @Mooser42001
    @Mooser42001 13 років тому

    @nutopiansg Why didn'y Hammond include pedal sustain on their console models? Never could figure that out.
    I do believe the new "clone wheel" B-3 has pedal sustain. And the "string bass" kits which can be fitted to tonewheel B-3s offer sustain.

  • @jzavala89

    its both...he mimics the left hand with the left foot...so he can let go of his left hand wenever and bass keeps goin.

    @nutopiansg I downloaded an audio program, free from the web, called "Audacity". This prgram (among many other things) takes music (like, say an incredibly fast Joey run) and then slows it down to half speed or less without changing pitch! Very, very useful to try and dope out very fast runs!

  • @asilentninja
    @asilentninja 15 років тому

    just to add to that last comment...notice that there is no bass player? Check out Dennerlein+bach improv on the tube to see why the hammond is a sweet trio instrument (ie.bass pedals). so..no,you couldn't have a trio "like this" by replacing the hammond with a piano. The hammond brings a little extra juice with it.

    Joey is from Delaware county close to Philadelphia..I am from Norristown,Pa (also Clsoe to Philly)the home of the Great Jimmy Smith who popularized the Hammond organ to played like this.I think Joey is better and that is saying quite a bit.

  • @korglove

    you are wrong aj. don't forget, it's Joey DeFrancesco Trio. he plays perfectly with the band. just listen to unison moments. they play like one. if he takes off in improvisation part, whats wrong with that? he is the king and he shows exactly why he is the king. thats what his audience want to hear. so relax my friend and think positive. there are maybe 5 people in the world who can play like him: peterson, corea, camilo. petricciani and defrancesco. case closed.

    piano? No piano. This is a Hammond "B" Organ and Joey D is one of the all time greats playing it. Piano and Hammond are not the same...
    Lonnie Smith and Jimmy Smith would be a couple of other all time greats on the Hammond. I prefer Jimmy's style over them all.

    Which black hammond players are you talking about? Jimmy Smith? He plays a truckload of notes, especially at this tempo. People like Lonnie Smith and Jack McDuff have no where near the feel or facility of joey and jimmy so they can't really be compared. Who are you talking about?

    How is it stolen? It isn't. If we reason that way then everyone but Bach is a thief, and they are not. It is assimilation, creation, and extension. To call someone a thief is simply wrong, or maybe not even wrong since all music depends on other music but is never the same as what preceded it.
