Joey, you were my music hero since I was a little child. I remember seeing you for the first time in TV with Elvin Jones and Birelli Lagrene - this concert I recorded on VHS. I cannot count how many times I've seen that concert. Seeing you live in Prague was one of the best musical experience I've ever had - and I still have your signed photo framed. You will be truly missed. You have a very special place in my music heart - I love you, Joey. It is hard to say goodbye - so rather see you later.
Joey has the B3 DOWN! I heard Jimmy Smith live multiple times. If you close your eyes when Joey plays, you’d swear Jimmy was back in town. Any musician with this level of skill and soul deserves recognition. He’s keeping a vanishing genre of jazz alive. Nice guitar and in the pocket drumming, too!
So sorry to hear of Joey's passing -- A swingin' fantastic musician with a great repertoire..man those fingers could fly! We saw him live, several times and I shook his hand. RIP
Joey, what a fantastic talent with complete control of the mighty Hammond...gone much too soon. Thankful we still can listen to his fantastic recordings.
Joey Forever, RIP..!!
OMG! Joey is my hero. I played B3 for years on the road. NEVER in my wildest dreams could I make it sing the way he does. The trio... all of them are fantastic. 💯
Actually Pros in general get these sounds if "Money is Right." I remember "Jimmy Smith sitting in on my Organ at 14" saying I had him down to which I said getting paid to which he said "You got it down."
Though not extensive, I have a fair jazz collection . . . . and this guy, this guy here, is part of it. I hate nay sayers and negative nelsons. Half of the people that are down playing this guy's ability . . . . . . probably couldn't hold a note to him. Just enjoy the music . . . . . or leave!!!!!
Byron Landham always provides for some sooperb drumming. He's one of my favorites if not the favorite of all drummers. He's so relaxed when playing and pulling off the stuff he does.
Awesome performance. What does a player have to do to shut the haters up? For Gods sake, you meanies are welcome to come and show me how it should be done anytime. This is top flight jazz. Go get screwed, haters.
I can listen to this all day. This is pure talent. You just don't hear too many jazz organists anymore. Not saying they aren't out there. Right now he 's the best one recording. Keep playing Mr D
I’m curious whether this “new” B3 has actual tone wheel generators. I’m guessing not - they’d cost a fortune to manufacture. Then again, the starting price for a genuine, 50-year-old B3 is $10,000 and the sky is the limit.
Computer. You are correct on the production costs. Not only the tone wheel but each key was hand wired. Hammond was caught in a quandry; production costs were too high for profitability and computers hadn't the capacity to replace the tone wheels. Ergo, no more Hammond. Granted, Yamaha was doing some great things with FM synthesis which led to their pretty fantastic digital pianos but their efforts on the B-3 were pretty much limited to "click or no click". Sad to see Hammond go but darned glad I'll never have to move a B-3 again!
Guitar deserves a big round of applause for the solo section, how long did he get to prepare for the gig to pull off this very tricky number. The guitar sound is a perfect compliment to the B3. These thumbs down people people are zombies that wont be back. Drums man doing exactly what's right on this song and Joe is as near to a god on organ as you will ever find
Many folks make all kinds of negative comments about Joey. Some question his technique and creativity, some comments are purely racial ... white men can't jump after all. But all one needs to do is "listen". Forget about the other "crap". Joey can PLAY!
I'm agreeing with you and adding that nobody - black, white, green, or blue - who knows music says that. People who can play or listen to music with an enlightened ear don't listen for race. Miles never did. As for the rest - I feel sorry for them but don't really think much about them.
BC I wholeheartedly agree with you. however, your example of Miles Davis is LOLOL. That guy hated white people. a simple look on the internet will bring that to light. That guy grew up during segregation.
Joey is one of a very small breed of newer-generation players who have kept the Hammond B3 alive. If it wasn't for him and the likes of Barbara Dennerlein and James Taylor, the B3 would be struggling and yes, these guys are all white and from different countries. It's not about your colour or where you're from - just about how you play and whether it sounds lovely. Joey has soul and is totally at one with his instrument.
When Joey turned on his full organ sound and rotating speaker and really started jamming, I just lost it. My body started moving and grooving with a will of its own, right in the chair I was sitting in
A master is a master. I praise God every time I hear one as they are the greatest gifts musicians can receive.. Thank you Joey for all the hard work you put in. This trio just kick booty. Gonna go have my chiropractor work on my neck in the morning.
And Joey's handling the bass chores with his left hand quite well, thank you very much! Not often you see a jazz trio replace the bass player with a guitar player!
All three seem to have the power to groove and swing as one mind. Joey is a master of the Leslie Speaker control giving that Hammond a great pressurized sound that is mighty expressive. Unbeatable stuff loved it.
Joey is truly amazing. He can burn, but he plays all the good licks and phrases you want to hear, the stuff that touches your soul and satisfies you, the stuff that make us love B3. He also continues to carry on the message of the greats we know and love.
My favorite trio! To me, these cats are right up there with the original Oscar Peterson trio in terms of their cohesiveness and flow. Brilliant idead to put that song in the key of Bb too. Blusier!
