What do you prefer, short or long long exposures?
Attilio Ruffo both 😂😂
:-)
Hello Attilio ,depend what whe are trying to create
Long long exposure
Entirely depends. Both
Attilio, I’ve been wondering for such a long time what type of photographs I want to start producing more of, and making sure they stand out - your fine art photography is one that feels like such a rarity that I’m used to seeing, and something that inspires me to choose long exposure photography amongst everything else. Truly incredible work and stunning results 🙏
Great explanation and comparison between short long and long long exposures, soundtrack also fits the video very well. Congratulations!
Thanks 🙏
I've been watching your videos for a while.
I've learnt and reviewed long exposure photography through your videos, I put it into practice always trying to remember your advice and now, i'm loving it...
A huge thank to you !
Thanks a lot mate 🙏
Attilio, when I see your ethereal image I always fall short of words to express, how beautiful they are and how your passion and commitment reflects in your photographs. Honestly, your passion is contagious & pushes people like us to step out and take some photos and learn from your rich experience and put some to practice. Heartfelt thanks for always talking time to create content for us, keeping us in mind. Thank you is a very small word.
Thank you dear Anuja! I always appreciate your support 👍
Your patience, visualization, experimentation, and creativity make each session special. Thank you.
Thank you Larry!
Thank you for getting joy in the moment, no matter what the moment holds!
Thanks Kevin 👍
Loved that final long exposure image with the balance between the colour of the rock and the milkiness of the water
thanks mate!
I liked both the short and long long exposures - its amazing the differences that slight shutter speed changes can make in the short/long ones. I appreciate seeing those differences so this was an excellent instructional vlog. Thanks. I have to say though that the long/long shot was captivating!
Thank you Larry!
Nice video, showing the process of doing long exposure, finding composition, evaluate light. Showing the settings you use, the shots you get, and sharing your thoughts are great, we learn from that :-)
This is great Attilio. I think we share the same generally foggy stretch of coast to some degree so this is especially relevant to me. Playing with long exposures along the coast is a great way to salvage a cold and grimm looking day!
Thank you David, we need to play with what we have... sometimes it works really well! :-)
I really enjoy looking at both exposures, your the videos are superb. Such a great learning tool, thank you!
Thanks Alan!
Bellissimo video come sempre. Mi piace perché è come se raccontassi una storia. Complimenti sei bravissimo. Naturalmente preferisco the long long exposure. Ciao Marco
Grazie mille Marco!
I love the way you explain what your thinking and why make you choices. Great video, i think your my number 1 photograph on UA-cam. Thx!!
Thank you Ronald 🙏
Thank you for another great video. Your instruction regarding the filters ISO and shutter speed was was very well done.
Thank you Jim!
Thanks for the great video & your thoughts on this topic!
I like both, short & long long exposure.
During the day when the light is hard & just some clouds are visible, i love to do long longexposures. Especially at the sea. just a straight composition, nice cyan water, maybe a big rock in the water & just a little bit of the beach.
You get this crazy dreamy & creamy look. In the lower part of the image you get a light brown/ocher tone (from the sand beach), which slowly turns into a cyan with the water & in the middle part of the image you have one single rock in the image, which is getting all your attention (exposuretimes around 2 to 5 minutes).
Short longexposures i love for the sunrise & sunset (at the sea), waterfalls & maybe also on a really calm lake.
At the sea you get this nice soft white lines leading into the picture & on waterfalls you'll keep some of the structure in the water.
One thing you could try Attilio: Take an analog camera (maybe medium format 6x6), low iso film (something Fuji Velvia 50) & some really strong ND Filters (like a 4.5) - You can reach exposure times up to hours & you can see the sun moving trough your picture. A german photographer (Nils Karlson) does this kind of shots & he also created a small book, that i really love (it's called "eyes like slumber").
Thanks Alexander! I might try the medium format analogico long exposure...👍
Love your positive attitude Attilio. Keep up the great work!
Thank you Larry!
It’s always refreshing to see you explaining...... thanks
Thanks 🙏
Thank you Attilio! Your channel is just getting better and better every week.
Question 1 - did you try portrait orientation? Just the rock(s), water and sky without silhouette in horizon?
Question 2 - do you have in your plans to do review about your "Photography Clothing" - your opinion and experience?
Thanks my friend!
I did try the vertical composition, but I did like the big negative space on the right of the frame...
Landscape Photography clothing could be an interesting theme for a future video, thanks 🙏
Attilio
I really enjoyed ur work...
Wow... I like the way you presenting this video. It looks so lively and the music too....
thank you!
Such beautiful shots! You're my favorite channel!
thanks a lot Steven!
I’m getting to this 8 months late but I think this may be your very best video; especially for the concepts it teaches. More please!
thank you!
Great as always!
Thank you Billy!
Beautiful and instructive, thank you for sharing Attilio!
thanks Omar!
Very rewarding indeed. Thanks Attilio
Thank you
I only found your videos recently and I am really enjoying watching them. You are a great presenter.
Thanks 🙏
Long long! Again a great video. Love the calm atmosphere. Very inspiring!
Thank you Roy!
Not boring at all Attilio. Great images. Thanks
Thank you 🙏
I'm generally a short long exposure girl, but after seeing this, I really like both! I guess it depends on what I'm photographing. Grazie, Attilio!
I am sure you will enjoy the longer long exposures too. Ciao!
Another wonderful video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you 🙏
Always a pleasure to learn new things and be in your company !
Thank you Robby! 😍
I have been watching your videos for a while, and i learnt a lot from you....you really are a great photographer. would you please make a video concerning filters and the different between the ND and the GND. Thanks
thanks a lot!
I kind a like both short and long exposures and I always enjoy watching you on UA-cam and learning a lot from you and it’s helping me on my photography and thank you
Thanks my friend!
Hi Attilio: Thanks for creating and sharing this video. I really enjoy LONG Long Exposure photography using my Lee Big Stopper filter. However, I never really considered the potential impact of ETTR on the proposed length of time. I will consider that going forward. Thanks for the tip. Cheers, Keith
Well Sir I would have to say in an ocean of UA-cam content out there, I feel that from all the channels I have watched you are the only real artist. Your images are remarkable Attilio. Thank you for your contributions.
thank you so much, Adam!
Awesome video and mainly loving and staying in the nature is always great
thanks mate!
Exactly what I needed to see and hear. Thank you.
👍
great explanation of process, thx a lot) landscape photography is not about taking shots and you shows it through your videos
thanks!
As always a video show and explanations. Thank you for sharing your teachings with us.
Thanks 🙏
Grandissimo video Attilio , come sempre. Amo il tuo stile fotografico e grazie ai tuoi video sto imparando un sacco di cose visto che è da poco che ho iniziato con questa "DROGA" che è la fotografia :) . Complimenti ancora!
Grazie mille! Sono contento di averti contagiato... ;-)
Very nice! Agree ...spending time in nature is amazing! Beautiful
Thank you 🙏
Hi attilio that was a great video more of these comparisons videos on different exposure lengths would be great! As this video was really interesting mate! Keep up the great work!
Thank you James!
You are a true scientist of long exposure. The 5 min long long exposure photo is breathtaking.
😘😘😘
Thanks for the videos. Always full of info. and the music is so soothing.
Thanks Ron!
Another brilliantly composed and explained vlog Attilio Thankyou. On your final image have you, besides the 5 minute exposure done anything in LR to make the sky and sea look so milky. Thankyou for the educational vlogs as always 📸👍🇬🇧🤓💯💥
Thanks Chris! I did work on the exposure of the lower part of the photo...
Nice video Attilio. I definitly prefere the long exposure because this brings it to minimalism-photography with a dreamy touch to it.
Agreed...
Great video. So informative Attilio. Thank you.
Rich D. He always has very useful videos for us 🙌🏽
Thanks Rich!
Thanks Attilio for explaining all you steps and what your doing as you go, very helpful. I was wondering if you ever take uv or ir photos? Thanks Tim
Thanks Tim! I didn’t experiment yet with UV and IR... but I will!
great video thanks - just getting started and finding this channel the best resource on You Tube
Thank you very much 🙏
Bellissimo video e foto stupende. Grazie Attilio !
Grazie! :-)
Beautiful video with very inspiring photos. I just need to take that leap of faith and give it a shot.
Yes indeed, maybe this weekend? 😊
Great video, all of them are worthwhile and very nice to see.
Thanks Jose!
Long! Tks for yr nice work
👍
Simply woooow!
👍🙏
Absolutely fantastic ...I only want to spend time with nature ...all the very best sir ...
thanks!
Top Notch Attilio!
Thank you!
Loved it sir.
Thank you 🙏
Thank you so much for classes... I learned a lot from you... Grazie mille🙏🙏
👍
Great video, as always
Thank you 🙏
Preferisco come sempre le lunghe esposizioni, che ho scoperto grazie ai tuoi video..........Sei un grande Attilio! Complimenti!
Grazie mille!
Your Photography is Amazing as Always.
Thank you 🙏
amazing video with good explanation ....
Thank you 🙏
Final .. super long exp was the best. Another great content Mr.Ruffo.
thanks a lot!
Fantastic tutorial, thank you.
🙏
If I was there I would be stuck with my 6 STOP ND - the 1 I have. If the rock area was in focus @ F7.1 as it was for your distance, then I could have added more F Stops towards 10. It would have been interesting to see those results. I'll have to try that. Great job.
🙏
hey 👋 Attilio , I like the long short exposure video especially because of your good explanation , your step by step approach. This by far one ☝️ if you best videos for me . Your approach in making not the best location & or lighting condition to a good if not great 👍 image . Nice 👍 job . I loved it . Thanks!!!!
Thanks a lot Richard! :-)
I love both your short and long exposure. Am I correct to say that you compose your shot then judge how far to slide your graduated ND filter in the holder when using the polarizer filter and 6, 10 or 15 stop ND filter?
Yes you are correct!👍
Great video...as always. But seriously, I love the shoes. Can you tell me what they are? Thanks again.
thanks Dave - here my shoes amzn.to/2Nye9Vp
Great video on doing what feels right for you Attilio my friend
Thanks Trevor!
A very nice video. Very useful for those starting out with long exposure. You show many of the common problems and how to work around them. And the images are beautiful. Lovely textural contrast.
One thing I would add is that if you have a 10 stop but don't own or cannot afford a darker ND filter then simply take multiple Images and blend in post. Stacking 4 exposures will give the effect of a 12 stop ND for example. Just remember to switch off the in-camera noise reduction so there's no lag between shots. Best to using a median or mean stacking operator in post too
Thanks for the video Attilio. Really enjoyed
thanks David, I might do a video about long exposure with multiple shots....
@@AttilioRuffoit works really well. I also bracket them as I don't use ND grads. Feels weird and counter-intuitive doing it. 8 seconds, 30 seconds and 120 seconds is a 2 stop bracket 😂
Tnx for sharing again 👌
👍
Really touching and amazing masterwork!
Thank you very much!
Thank You
Thanks
Attilio Ruffo, love the 7 seconds and the long exposure ones. Def inspired me but still learning with my starter lens. What would you recommend for Canon Crop for wide angle? Thanks man.
Thank you Angel! I never used Canon though 🥴
Thank you. I enjoyed immensely this video!
Thanks Lucia! I am glad to hear... :-)
I LOVE your videos and I have been learning so much. Which app do you use to calculate times over 30 seconds? Thank you!
After watching I'm chilled right out and I've learned from you yet again, what more can one ask? Oh yes, I don't have a remote for my camera currently but I assume that I could set the timer on my camera to achieve the same non camera movement / shake? Thanks Attilio.
Yes the timer will do too! 👍
For this scene, I preferred short exposures showing the stripes or trails going back into the sea. Very cool effect. I really enjoyed seeing the difference here. I'm doing much more long exposure photography and really enjoy the process.
👍
Wonderful video. Were you at the tip of Point Reyes? The Tule Elk make me think so.
Thank you! correct...I was there! :-)
I prefer long exposures. Something special about them. Keep up the great work. 📸📸📸
Same here Matt!
Matt Grile they simplify the image and give it an ethereal feel for sure 🙌🏽
The 5 min. Exposure is Fine Art. I love this work... I prefer the long exposure of 5 min. 👌
Thanks mate!
Michael Bottari the long expo really simplified that image!
A very good vblog, thank you!
Thanks 🙏
It’s finally ”RuffoThursday”!!! 🤟🏻
😍
Hi Attilio, great video. Thanks for talking us through your thought process while taking long exposure shots. Very informative and also reassuring that even you don't get the picture you are expecting first time every time. Do you have a recommendation as to what ND and ND Grad filters a budding long exposure photographer should have in his/her bag as a minimum? (ignoring post processing techniques). Cheers. :-)
Thanks David! A 10 stops ND and a 3 stops GND will help a lot...
Great video! I’m pretty sure I know where you shot this and would love to see what you’d come back with if you went up north just a little further to the Jenner area - those rocky beaches are insane!
Thanks mate! 🙏
Super, thank you for simple explanation how to control the camera-shot... just what I need
thank you mate!
Thank you for everything, I have learnt alot from you....
Thank you 🙏
Fantastic.
thank you!
Wonderful video Attilio, I do prefer long long exposure but in this case I think the short exposure works very well with the waves. Just a question: did you do any focus stacking for the rock in bottom left corner of the picture or you just put the focus on the rock surrounded by water? Thanks and ciao!
Grazie Gabriele! E niente stacking... solo single shots!
You are my teacher from now on !
Happy to hear that! :-)
Nothing but awesome content
JK’s Adventures thanks!
Thanks for another awesome video. Do you experience some noise at long exposures? Do you remove it in post processing?
My long exposure always have it...
Not too much noise this time...
that long - long exposure is stuning! Congrats! i got to invest some Money in some good ND filters! Thank you for the vídeo Attilio!
thanks my friend!
This video really got me wanting to use mine more often!
Me too. Could you please test the NISI system? I wait for your test to buy
@@molopez619 that's good!
@@giacomonovara I might get a set of NiSI in a month or so...
Hi enjoy your long exposures videos, can you explain how you line up your gnd when you have a 15 stop nd on. Thanks
Thanks! Will do in the upcoming Long exposure photography mini-series...
Great explanation as usual!! I've 2 questions tho: here you are using the Haida Filter Kit? and what is the ND calculator app? I use photopills, but the one you shown have a more intuitive and immediate UI.
Also, would love to see a video on the polarizer alone. You did on on ND filters, but what is a Polarizer doing exactly? what are the benefits?
Grazie Simone...si usavo i filtri Haida e l'app e' quella della Lee, Lee Stopper app. Presto qualcosa sul polarizzatore :-)
Great video Attilio, as always. The 15 stops ND filter is also from Haida? Thank you!
Thanks! Yes it is...
Hi Attillio
Great video and beautiful location. I am starting to research filter kits since I think I am finally ready to attempt long exposure photography with filters.
Your work inspires me very much. I see that you use the Haida Filters as well as the Lee filters. I have 2 questions if you don't mind me asking.
Which filter do you like the best and what does one offer more than the other? What size kit or filters would be good to start with?
I went to the link that you included for both filter kits and see that Lee also has a landscape Pro kit (probably has more than I need) but if its worth having more then I am not opposed to buying it.
thanks Steve. My fav ND is the 10 stops, which is also the one I would buy first...
Great video. I think the first photos (short long exposure) would look much better without the ND grad filter. The sky is more pleasing when it's that foggy white that you see in real life, in my opinion. The long long exposure turned out very well though, I really enjoyed that one.
Thank you 🙏
