Lost in The Last of Us

- The Last of Us, first released for the Playstation 3 in 2013, has enjoyed no shortage of popularity, acclaim, and analysis over the last decade; especially after HBO’s live-action adaptation of the Naughty Dog-developed game. The plight of Joel and Ellie's post-apocalyptic road trip is a simple, albeit emotionally-powerful story, but so much of The Last of Us's minor touches of brilliance tend to go overlooked in most discussions. A whirlwind of ideas, feelings, and truths that leave an unshakable impact on the player well after they've put down the controller. This is what it means to be Lost in The Last of Us: a story about contradiction, depression, escapism, and truth.

i always saw Joel as a dude that keeps living out of spite, he knows that the world took everything from him, not just Sarah, it took having a coffee in the mornings, going to see a movie and everything else, but i think that he feels like he is making the world angry by just being alive, the world its trying its hardest to kill him and he isnt going down, so he keeps going, even if he doesnt have a reason to keep going.
Exactly, funnily enough Joel is trapped in a similar kind of cycle of revenge that Ellie and Abby are in part II, the difference being there's no one person for him to focus his rage and grief on. The man who shot Sarah is long dead, and no one person is responsible for the world falling apart. So he makes it a point to keep surviving out of spite, which leads him to lose more and more of his humanity, until Ellie comes into the picture.
Joel had to die because he betrayed Tess’s dying wish
@@MrZomBie775
Who the fuck is Abby? And what do you mean the doctor’s scrubs were blue?
@@GuinessOriginal interesting take and that’s good point
Good point never thought of it like that
This game will forever be one of the bet games i’ve ever played.
*best
You can edit comments FYI.
You're wrong though....
It's one of the best games ever created.
@@Doradexplora he can also not edit the comment because who tf cares🤣
@@FuhzyLiquids he might? A lot of people would find it easier to correct their mistake than post an entirely seperate comment. Might have seemed abrupt, but I was just trying to be helpful.
@@Doradexplora yea I get that. I was projecting my own laziness 1000% lol
This game is my favorite thing ever created. As the years go by, it feels increasingly unlikely that anything will ever overtake it.
I've been watching your videos since you made your last video on The Last of Us and I actually really enjoy watching your video essays. No matter what game or subject you talk about, it's always phenomenal. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much. Enjoy the video!
You have some insane talent to make a compelling video. Nothing but respect for everything you do. This is hands down the best video essay on part 1 out there and your video on part 2 is just as great. :)
High praise, thank you!!
Agreed!

You did a great job encapsulating the subtext of the world that isn't so obvious. Many might feel it, but not know why. Fantastic work! I strive for this level of quality and to keep it up for that runtime is impressive.
Thank you!!
@@ArTorrPresents I've been a regular viewer of your videos and I have no doubt that you bring much love and passion into each of your videos, but you need to go easy on the bombast when conveying your thoughts. It's not about trying to impress yourself or your viewers with a beefy command of vocabulary and metaphors. It's about speaking clarity and truth in a way that feels like you're putting on a pair of velvet gloves or leaping off a tree into a lagoon below without hitting any branch on the way down.
This vid comes from a deep appreciation and understanding of TLOU universe. It also made me realise that in a world without boundaries we either become our best or worst selves, which makes this game/ series all the more realistic (besides the cordyceps fact being a thing). Thank you for your dedication.
Appreciate you checking out the video!
This has to be one of the best video essays I’ve ever seen. You dialogue connects so well with the scenes you choose to show us through your editing. Great job man!
Thank you!
Just finished this video, another absolute banger. You do such an incredible job with these videos, and this was so well worth the wait
Woo hoo!! Glad you enjoyed it!!
37:09 In this scene, and all it's context, there is a lot more than just the cannibalism that drives Ellie to react so much more violently than expected. David was being creepy, trying to hold her hand, and pinning her down, all these things. There are a lot of implications that David was wanting to or trying to either groom her, but when that failed, at the very end he might have been trying to SA her. Especially in an apocalyptic world like The Last of Us, this sort of terrifying acts might only be even more common. Yes, all the killing and cannibalism definitely changed her, but this might have truly tainted her, or at least became a breaking point. She was not only terrified to loose her life, but to be violated either before or after. Silver Lake is a representation of true reality for Ellie, the reality of people and their struggle, and that even if people help you, their intentions might not always be pure. I think this is at least an important part of everything she had been put through at Silver Lake, and is important to be touched on and mentioned. Honestly watching this scene (I watched gameplay stream's because I suck at video games but wtv) was really hard. It might be hard to notice or recognize if you haven't been afraid of something like that before, or have lived a life of fear of things like this happening to you like so many women do. This was the moment in both the game and show that hit the hardest for me, and made me cry. This game is a lot more reflective of the world/America we life in today than most people think, and all of the horrors that existed before also exist within still. The Last of Us a masterpiece, and will forever make my feel so much.
Thanks The Heavens ArTorr has Return Keep Up your Analysis and Retrospective Videos Can't wait to see the next video your have
that's crazy I was just rewatching your other TLOU video a couple of days ago and thought I wish he'd made another one. "Everything happens for a reason"
Out of all the video essays I've seen on the last of us, this is probably my favorite. The research, the thesis, the exploration of humanity-it's all so well done. Thank you for making this.
Thank you, glad you dug it :)
Brilliant work as always, captivating to watch with every minute… You open my eye about the story telling aspects of the last of us and many other movies or TV shows, always love watching movies and playing video games.
And what you do, really enlightens me to a different perspective.
Don’t stop creating content like this 💪🏽💪🏽
Thank you very much, appreciate you checking out the video!!
This is the best video essay on TLOU I’ve ever seen. You’ve managed to explain something that I was trying to grasp for a long time in such an emotional way. You rock, man! Keep on making awesome stuff.
I always say it. This channel is criminally underrated. Amazing video as per usual. Better quality than most things out there. I would say to keep up the good work, but I dont think its necessary lol. Love your essays :)
This is the best video essay on The Last of Us I’ve ever seen. The passion and the understanding of the story and the analysis of the characters decisions is the deepest and most powerful video I’ve seen since your Part 2 video. Anyway great video and I’m glad to have seen it because it gave me a whole new perspective on my favourite game.
Wow. The first sentence of my comment is the exact same lol. Great minds think alike!
Let me tell you I'm a sucker for TLOU video essays, and this might be the best one i've ever seen. Not just for your arguments and research (which are amazing) but for how you re-tell the story through the editing and your perspective. Admirable.
watching this was an absolutely incredible experience, i can't put it into words. thank you for this fantastically enlightening content on one of the most important games to my life
wow what a wonderful video, thank you for shedding a new light i didnt even think was possible
I watched your video on part 2 multiple times so was really interested to see where you would go with this.
It’s amazing.
Well thought out takes and the references to other media, philosophy and the human condition keeps it grounded in reality.
Thank you so much!!
I think this might be the best video I've ever watched on the last of us and I check every month for a new video. I wish I could explain what this video game series means to me and how it affects me so much but it's just too hard to. I love your video essays so much.
Thank you :) So glad you enjoyed the video!
This is such a brilliant video essay. Everything is perfect! Thank you for putting so much effort into deconstructing and analysing the The Last of Us. This is the kind of Quality Content we all deserve! Highly underrated!
Wow you posted this video while I was watching your essay on the second game. Both great videos!

A truly amazing video, from now on when someone asks me why do I like the last of us so much, I will tell them to watch this video. You perfectly explained everything. You deserve way more views.
Heyy, Just wanna say that i found yours vídeos today and i am absolutely astonished by the quality and passion that u put into them!! Please , keep this this quality!!
Greetings from Brazil!!
Thank you for checking out the video, more are on the way! :)
I've watched a lot of stuff about the Last of Us and you've already told me a bunch of things I've never heard before, thanks for such an informative video
18:00 "A Plague Tale: Innocence" and "A Plague Tale: Requiem" accomplish this also, especially when played in tandem. At the end of "Requiem", you feel what the protagonist Amicia is feeling. You can see it with playthroughs here on YT. Most of them share a sentence, that the player speaks out loud, under tears: "I don't want to do this ..."
Thank you for such an amazing insight of one the best videogames ive ever played, the video is definitely one of my favorite videos on UA-cam as i definitely enjoyed and appreciated it! 😊👍
This video is fantastic! The writing, the editing, i was mesmerized by it!! Congratulations on such great content! The last of us part 1 mark a part of my life when i have a big separation and think everything was falling apart..and part 2 years later i was playing when my father was very ill and finally past away. It felt like the game resonant with me in two period of my life that change me and redifined me. The game simply traspase the barrier of just a videogame... Sorry for my english and greetings from Argentina!!!
This video is so well put together, i only wish the best to this underrated channel.
Thank you 🙏
The fact that you included one of the ending songs from the credits of Left Behind during the I Am Your Dagger intro was the icing on the cake to this whole amazing video.

As always, your voice and narration skills, plus the background music make it a very relaxing video to watch and listen to. Amazing 👏
Thank you 🤟
Great video, would love to see one on pt 2
I am a big fan you changed the way I saw the last of us part 2 but this video is amazing it feels a pack that should come with the game
Seeing Joel hold Sarah's small bloody hand hurts my soul, the acoustic guitar song playing, the environment... it has a way of unspoken word. It makes me emotional, and yet so peaceful. I feel safe in this world mad dog has created
This is deep. I love it. Thank you.
Another excellent video. Well done as always. Keep up the good work buddy!
Will do! Thank you!
Bro you are truly talented. Keep the coming.
What a beautiful video enjoyed its so much I had to watch the 2nd time. Brilliant work.👌💫

Damn I really like your videos. I gotta go back and rewatch the TLOU2 video.
Your videos are so good! You definitely deserve a lot more viewers and subscribers.
Thank you!!!
I have to say, that this is probably your most in-depth, detailed, and immaculate video I've seen you post since the Last of Us part 2 and your Clone Wars videos. Not saying the others weren't before this lol; I can tell you have a unique passion for LoU. Passionate about the lore, understanding of the story in the symbolism behind it, and dedicated to helping others understand it better.
Not just with the last of us but with many other properties. Thank you ArTorr for helping others understand The Last of Us. It needs a voice.
Glad it got you.
I appreciate your kindness and thoughts here, thank you for checking out the video!!
@@ArTorrPresents Of Course, I found your channel through The Last of Us Part II, and then got right to watching the rest of your catalogue. Truly amazing at your editing, choreography, and what you know with each Topic.

Such a great video essay!
These video's are always top-tier, keep up the good work!
Thank you!!
Excellent essay it is abundantly clear you have experience with depression, and the told that it can take on someone’s life. I also see a darkness.
Watched it all in two spurts. Great job man. Very cool.
Just watching this video has made this game more to reality than I have realized. This video was so well put together to explain TLOU story that it brought tears to my eyes cause this franchise is my number 1 game to play cause of how true to reality it seems. I get more and more involved playing both games I think I have completed both games 4 times each and just completed it one more time. I never get drawn into a game as I have this one so thank you for putting this video so well together it is the best one I have watched. :)
Great analysis!! I also loved your analysis of Part 2 as well. You deserve so much more subscribers. :)
Thank you!
Absolutely phenomenal video man . My favourite tlou analysis and I’ve seen em all hahaha
Thank you :)
Very well done! I like the poetic and philosophical look at The Last Of Us, never losing sight of the fundamental ideas the game is grounded in.
I love watching videos like this. They really make you appreciate how great tlou is
Amazing video👏
Thank you so much for this beautiful breakdown. This game is very near to my heart.
Mine too! Cheers
Very fantastic video
Incredible as always.
Another banger man! Well worth the wait, and already looking forward to the next one.
I’m curious, have you ever considered a video on the Red Dead Redemption series?
Absolutely. Those games are high on my list, in-fact. Just waiting for the right time to talk about them on here. Thank you for watching!!
@@ArTorrPresents that’s awesome to hear! Can’t wait to see it! Keep up the awesome work man.

Fantastic video!
Glad you liked it!
absolute fire work
THANK you!
you are one of the few “analysis” channels that actually goes into considerable depth instead of just summarizing the events of the game. keep up the excellent work, it’s much appreciated!
Thank you!! It's frustrating to stumble across those channels that really only describe what happens in the plot, a story like The Last of Us deserves the deeper dive!!
I’d love to hear what you gotta say about the Red Dead series, I loved how you used José Gonzalez “Far Away”!
Bravo! found you with the clone wars videos, and here to stay!
Glad to have you here :)
Masterful video!
