Last time I saw this car, it whooped every other cars on a drag event, running 7.7s, while still on an almost full time attack setup. This car is insanely well built.
You could build a faster car on a custom frame made specifically to race... but then everyone would run the exact same setup, and it would be just like nascar lol. Going this far on a factory platform is awesome!!! Props!
audioh0lic I was wondering the same. You lost the driving feel, you lost the looks. What makes it the same car? Nothing. Don't understand why you wouldn't pick something that would work better if it was going to be a completely different car in the end
rossi23 mate he’s saying get a different car to start off with that is more suitable for what they’re using it for, from what he’s saying, there’s plenty more cars more suitable for what hems trying to do, mazda rx7 would have been much better if they wanted the 50/50 weight for handling and still great acceleration
Soon as I read “chain driven” my mind exploded either because I came to realize I don’t know as much as I can about an automobile or I’m just really stoned and imagining chain saws as drive shafts
I would like to see some videos about formula SAE and specially aerodynamics of it and other systems if it’s possible, it would be so helpful for me and making formula SAE more popular because not so many people know about it and how useful is it for new generation of automotive engineers and others. Awesome guy thanks.
The chain idea has been used a few times before, would be used more often if people actually believed they can easily handle the power, which they can, and if you're concerned, just run 2 chains! Nearly all V6 and V8 GM FWD cars from 1960s until now, are chain driven transmission, starting with the 455 cubic inch Oldsmobile Tornado.
In racing world they use duct tape a lot to gil in gaps where air can get trapped into to make it a little smoother so the air just flows through the car.
So.. this may be a silly question and maybe there's something I'm not understanding about the design or how chains work, but don't chains rely on tension to function? How is it possible to use chains to "push" the front wheels?
@@WesVit's virtually the exact same principle as a motorcycle set up Its basically a Stub axle on the gearbox with a sprocket welded in the end, the front shortened and modified subaru front drive shaft with cvjoints on wheel side like normal and the inside part of the shaft has a cv with the same size sprocket welded to the end....
Can you make a street car airo video. Basically how you would set up a rear wing, undercarriage, canards, front diffuser, and general aerodynamic mods we can do to make our cars faster. For general track use and canyon cruising use where no rules apply. How you would build or design the best airo car for all around driving and speed.
Aero creates drag and doesn't create meaningful downforce below 60-80mph. So the best street set up would be to strip off all the wings, diffusers, etc and enjoy the advantage of the weight savings.
@@Amy-dq2lg So are you saying that stripping weight makes a bigger difference at street speeds? Because that's literally my point. Hypothetical: should your rear spoiler be set at -12° or -16° at normal street speeds? Answer: Nah. On the street, it should be thrown in the trash because it's slowing you down. But spend a bunch of money on it anyway because that buys you respect from dumbasses who don't know shit and that totally matters.
antsolja Don't quote me on it, but I believe the S1(90s one) has better aerodynamics and less weight than the S2. The S2 comes with the 2ZZ engine though, which is a superb engine. The s3 is definitely not worth it. Not road legal in the US as far as I know, no 2ZZ (crappy 2ZR instead) and same aero. It's significantly lighter though. I'd probably go with the S2.
The car is cool if you're looking at this as strictly a race car. But in terms of relating this car to your everyday street car, there's nothing I can salvage from this GC8. Everything is altered...suspension, engine that sits deep within the firewall, engine/drivetrain mounting points, engine isn't an EJ, transmission that's an entirely different unit with a chain drive awd, dashboard that's most likely moved much further back than stock, etc... So basically, the only thing I see from this race car is, big aero (big big big wing, big big big snow shovel front splitter...shit just gets bigger each year), fully cut up car (center wind tunnel, fully tubed/caged), and electronics that are only meant for this race car... Might as well start off with a fully tubed chassis and drop in a fiberglass GC shell instead. To go this far with a Time Attack car that supposed to resemble a production street Subaru, it's totally pointless. All this engineering with the aero, suspension, different engine, transmission...I can't even use any of it to my GC8 street car. At least on a drag car like the Subaru White Bullet, I can migrate their entire engine/drivetrain to my car and everything will bolt-on to my chassis. That's a 8-sec or less drag car with 1000 wheel hp with a production Subaru engine casing, Subaru STI 6-speed trans casing, and suspension pieces that bolts up to factory pickup points.. And you can still drive the car home if you really wanted to. So no, totally no impressed with this Time Attack GC8.
With all that you still couldn't do a fast lap on any track that has corners, hence the reason he created a true race car outta his platform of choice. You're stupid.
Tyler & Boosted, you 2 sound like a couple of 12 year olds that got their Ice cream slapped out of their hands like a lil bitch. Maybe instead of crying like little girls, try adding something of value. Tyler - it is *you're* , ya damn hack. The owners work is amazing, but there is no reason he needed to keep using any part of the vehicle for what he was going for. Silly to call it an Sti, or whatever either. It is a badass racecar, but no longer a street car. Most Time Attack Events/Races require it to be an OEM road going vehicle, GearHead RD's comment stands & makes sense.
Next time can we get some actually good angles of the car, i seriously just wanted a simple rear, side, front and angled view, none of this pissy stupid up close shaky video
Also the quality is horrible, I think a new camera is in need here, or atleast someone that knows what they’re doing with settings because the light completely fucked most of the video when facing towards it

7.7 that is absolutely crazy!!
Do you know how much it weighs?

i love time attack cars
the insanity of the aero is awsome!
This is the sort of odd balls cool stuff that time attack is perfect for.
If you go this far with a car (which I think is awesome btw) you start to wonder, why not start with a platform that is more suited from the getgo?
audioh0lic I was wondering the same. You lost the driving feel, you lost the looks. What makes it the same car? Nothing. Don't understand why you wouldn't pick something that would work better if it was going to be a completely different car in the end
because it's fun to modified a car starting from a basis you like. IF you don't like tuning you cant understand ;)
They are Subaru specialists, especially the engine of course. I think it is understandable that they want to take a Subaru to the limit - and beyond.
It’s not about easy, it’s about trying different things and making it work

So.. this may be a silly question and maybe there's something I'm not understanding about the design or how chains work, but don't chains rely on tension to function? How is it possible to use chains to "push" the front wheels?
The chains are wrapped around a sprocket which rotates the wheels forward.
Its basically an inboard portal axle, but instead of a gear its using a chain. They aren't unidirectional. You can see the tensioner under the fender.
