Nice to see somebody else shares my enthusiasm for this fine piece of miltary history. It's a nice piece of kit, and you must be proud of it. Sometimes the old ones really are the best!
It's darn near impossible not to love the Enfield. I t's even better when a buddy who no longer has an Enfield unexpectedly gives you around 800 rounds of Greek HXP ammunition just to clear up space in his garage. Very nice video, BTW.
I love your videos. Nice to have an informed gun collector comment on the ins and outs of these fine old rifles. I'm also in your camp, but only collect German WWII rifles and machineguns.
The ANZACs used the SMLE or No 1 rifle which was made in Australia. The Australian factories supplied Britain with rifles. As far as I know Britain did not supply rifles to Australia. Unlike Britain, the ANZACs stuck with the SMLE throughout WWII.
I found a company called Australian International Arms that sells new-manufacture Lee Enfields, designated the No 4 Mk IV, chambered for the .308. It has a ten round detachable box magazine, that is truly detachable due to the improved magazine release lever. I live in the U.S., so I'd have to figure a way to import one if I wanted it, but it looks really nice.
Without a doubt one of the best, if not the best, bolt action battle rifles in the world. Now used a lot in northern Canada to hunt bear, dear and moose. Still used in a few forces in the world like the police forces of India, and the Canadian Northern Rangers in the arctic. Takes abuse better then the M-16/C-7 used by regular Canadian troops. Used by the Afghans against the Soviets soldiers to great effect, even against AK47s. The Lee Enfield. A classic ! I have a No. 4 Longbranch. No Sell !
Beautiful rifle! I have a 1952 Fazakerley (FTR) Shoots like a dream and the action is smooth and fast! Got it for $100 about 15 years ago. Was offered $350 last year.....no thanks!
Great rifle mate! I just picked up a Mk4 #1 dated 1944 manufactured by Long Branch..It shoots very quick and flat..I will be posting a video of it soon as well as a shooting video with all my WW2 Rifles..good on ya mate!
I tend to not think about where the M1 came from but more about where the American forces took it, and what they did with it! M1 is a beautiful rifle and we are lucky to have been on the shooting end of it. We all know what happend to the forces on the business end of it.
MrBasslineraver69, Guns are NOT banned (per se) in the UK, you just need to go through a lot of paperwork, as well as police checks to be able to be granted either a Firearms Certifictae (FAC) or a Shotgun Certificate (SGC). Please don't fall into the trap that most others do, in respect of being able to own firearms in the UK. ;o)
Great Video I just bought a Burma Contract No4Mk2 dated 6/53 last week. Asides from some dinged up wood, its in great condition. I do wish I had watched your video as I did not know about the little screw that holds the stock to the receiver. I felt very dumb after noticing it.
It's a beautiful example. Mine isn't so pristine...but again, I can go out to the range and shoot mine. To have these but have to deactivate them is almost criminal.
When I was an Army Cadet back in the 1990's I used to shoot blanks on a .303 all the time, man they were loud. We had hundreds of the rifles, all in very good condition too, I wonder what happened to them all?
Yep "SUNCORITE" is the correct pronunciation, I'm an aircraft armourer and it's still used in the RAF by armourers, it's essentially a paint that at one time was pretty hard wearing. These days it's not so good. It comes in other colours notably red which is used on the blast tubes on Hawk aircraft 30mm ADEN guns and of course on Jaguar and Harrier/Sea Harrier in the past.
Naughty naughty. One hand (and/or knees) holding rifle, and left hand twisting bayonet. Give the Jolly Green some credit for trying to do it cacky handed and upside down fellas... Ross
I just picked up my first .303 today only down fall, previous owner slipped it into a sporterized stock.. and I will eventually find an original dress to slip it into
I totally enjoyed your videos. I have recently obtained a 1952 no4 mk2 Lee Enfield, I dont know much about dismantling the fire arm. Would it be possible for you to make a video? On dismantling and reassembling it would be a great help. Keep up the good work Eamonn Dunne {Ireland}
@chopperslam69 Keep in mind that the magazines for the earlier No.1 Mk3 rifles differ somewhat from the later, No. 4 model magazines. They're not interchangeable.
Hello. I have a number 4 mark 1 but it has the mark 2 trigger. Dont know if they might have upgraded it during service or if it was done as a replacement in the past. All the numbers match on the rifle. Marked 1941 on receiver
@chopperslam69 VERY good deal IF it has a good bore and is safe to fire. Be sure to have the headspace checked by a good gunsmith before firing. These rifles are a joy to shoot, and the later models (No.4 Mk 2's) are generally the best made and most accurate.
jolly, you need to get a tripod :D. I've gotta say, The "Improved enfields" coming out of Australia are top notch! of course they're not a real .303. but they really nice just the same!
Vegemite is blacker than axle grease, thicker than axle grease and if you spread it too thick on your toast and take a bite, it's like jamming your toung onto an electric fence. Your glands in your mouth go apeshit. No joke. Love your vids Jollygreen. Hope to see more soon.
how do you spell dat sancoerait? coating you are talking about i cannot find anything on google! about it i own an no4 mk2 12/54 and love it!! only thing is what are the adjustements in sights and how do they work starting at 200 yards ore so? Kind regards from holland
Think it's Australian Marmite or something like that. On a rifley note, the No4 Mk2 is a fantastic rifle. Would love to shoot with one some day. Working action deac's just aren't the same...
Jollygreen. Nice rifle! I have one like that as well (11/54). The electro stenciling on yours looks like it was painted over. Mine looks exactly the same. Did the Brits apply the finish before or after the stenciling? If the former is the case, wouldn't the stenciling reveal the bare metal? It would makes sense to apply the finish after the stenciling to protect against rust, but I've seen other No4Mk2's with bright stenciling going down to the bare metal. Which shows correct, original finish?
Just ordered one for the young fellow. Need to re-woood it from sporter but in very nice condition. Bugr, the forewood I have is a No4MkI. Maybe a quick flick on the differences JGS?
Your Austrailian... just wondering if you have ever seen the movie Breaker Morant about the Aussies in the 2nd Boer War and his rule 303 speech he gives. Awesome movie just, thought I'd recommend it.
good vid by the way. I like all the lees ya have. but they aren't that hard to come across here in the states I can get them pretty easy from the sporting good stores around here. the ammo is not cheap how ever have to pay $15 a box for 20 but i did get a box of 400 rounds for $65 ita s 40's and 50's era mix works though! BANG!
Your No.4 is in great condition, damn good video by the way; getting harder to get these rifles these days, with laws etc. One can only wonder what they would have looked like with a walnut stock...don't drop or scratch-says RSM LOL. I recently was told that the bolt heads become a bit loose after a while, any truth in that? Go the vegemite!
@Pawnbroker00 ...Look. If you haven't already read what I said to "supressorgrid" about my deactivated weapon then read it. Im only 17 so im not even a legal age to possess a legal live firing weapon of a higher calibre than .22. I use a deactivated rifle for reenactments I go to. Sure it might not fire, but it can be a good thing to show people how it works and is good for drill! I don't really care if people call them "scrap" they're a bit of history!
He has got a fazakerley last production is 1955 and it was made for the Irisch Army, but the order was canceld and the rifles where stored in the arsenal. The total amount of rifles from the last badge was 40.000 and they where sold in de 1990's to frankonia Germany and a few other major rifle dealers. So the where not made for the british army, because the where going over on the FAL enfield rifle in 308. n
@brutalsea1 ...Yes, I know, but I have an interest in the gun, and at the time I was only liable to purchase that kind of rifle (or anything .22 or less), but now im the legal age (18) im going to apply for my FAC in which I'll be able to buy a live firing lee enfield. Reason I got a deac was because 1) I do historical reenactment, 2) it's a tad bit safer for the public to look at rather than a live and 3) good to show how it works for the public... so yeah ¬.¬
I've got the S.M.L.E. No.1 Mk.3 and the only problem i've had so far is the seafty comes forward when I shoot it other then thats its almost 100 years old and thats the only problem i've ever had but thats easy to fix just tighten the bolt on it and no more problems.
Not for an older rifle, or modern. As long as their not fully auto, or anything ridiculous like that. Also, It depends on the state in which you live... Im from Indiana and the only thing we need a license for is a concealed handgun.
I just bought a no4 mk2 and the stamping/serial number is just barely readable, yours looks better but it seems like they didn't put a whole lot of effort into marking these rifles.
I want to try vegemite. Looked it up and sounds good. Lots of history in Australia even though it's apparently an American product. Much like the M1 Garand has a lot of history in the US but it's a Canadian rifle :P John C Garand, the Canadian, and the inventor of the M1! Muahaha!
Our hearts go out to our British cousins. They wanted to try the same thing here in the U.S. when Slick Willie was president, but we fought back through the ballot box, most od the politicians here in the States got the message, except for a few diehards since gun control is almost gone from political debates. Guess what, crime hasn't increased here due to more guns, it has actually decreased in the last few years.
Urm, I don't really care if its no more than a "club" Its still a rifle, it still works, but it doesn't fire. I'd rather have a legal weapon on no FAC rather than no FAC and having an illegal firearm. Anyway's it's a bit of history im glad to own.
Please don't tell me that's a deac that's all chopped up inside? I die a little every time I see a beautiful peice of history mangled like that. How hard WOULD it be to reactivate a deactivated rifle, anyway?
Nice to see somebody else shares my enthusiasm for this fine piece of miltary history. It's a nice piece of kit, and you must be proud of it.
Sometimes the old ones really are the best!
Can you share where you sourced your No 5 carbine? - i have just got 4 mark 2 and am keen to get the carbine as well.
It's darn near impossible not to love the Enfield. I

You need to do more videos. I remember a decade ago watching your youtube videos a couple years after I got into collecting.
i've always liked how the Lee-Enfield series rifles has always had some clean/elegant lines
Nice rifle. I've got several marks of the Lee Enfield and an original .22 cal made in 1916. Keep up the good work.
such a gorgeous rifle
My No.2 is a true nail driver at 100 yards with the iron sights.
I found a company called Australian International Arms that sells new-manufacture Lee Enfields, designated the No 4 Mk IV, chambered for the .308. The Lee Enfield. A classic ! I have a No. 4 Longbranch. No Sell !
Lovely rifle, just like the rest of your collection.
its a spread we put on sandwiches and toast and stuff. i think its like a yeast concentrate paste or something, very strong taste
Beautiful rifle! I have a 1952 Fazakerley (FTR) Shoots like a dream and the action is smooth and fast! Got it for $100 about 15 years ago. Was offered $350 last year.....no thanks!
Damn good rifle... you are so lucky to have one.
excellent review man nice rifle, I hope to get my hands on one of these sometime soon
one of the best rifles I've ever owned

Think it's Australian Marmite or something like that.
On a rifley note, the No4 Mk2 is a fantastic rifle. Would love to shoot with one some day. Working action deac's just aren't the same...
Another great vid! You may pick up a tripod for that camera, would makes tasks such as fitting bayonets a lot easier :oP
i think that the whole bayonet thing with the No. 4's was the only thing i never liked about them, the No. 1's were so much nicer with the bayonets on
Well Done!
Just acquired a No4 Mk2, sn is 3092xx, approx 100 before the start of the Irish contract. Any idea on this rifles history?
i just recently aquired the canadian smle no.4 mk.1 could you do a video on that please also what exactly does vagimite taste like?
Thumbs UP, very nice!
no.4 mk2: anywhere from 225-700
no.4 mk1/ mk1*: anywhere from 200-600
SMLE: around the same
no.5's usually start at 500 and go up from there
Mine is dated 6-53, and has the navy proofmark on the barrel. Does yours?

Any rifle that been "deactivated" is no more than a club. Therefore you have a club that looks like a rifle.
@PyroPeeta yes lee enfields are legal for a FAC a found a place ware u can pick
new enfields up for £280 plus
i have one just like that ecept the front shit is litel tilted but it shoots wher you point .

Your Austrailian... just wondering if you have ever seen the movie Breaker Morant about the Aussies in the 2nd Boer War and his rule 303 speech he gives. Awesome movie just, thought I'd recommend it.
What do you use vegemite for? We live in Holland and friends bring it over for us from Australia my mom loves it.

@Pawnbroker00 thats like saying swords in a musuem are scrap because your not allowed to hack people to bits with them....
Am I right in saying that this rifle has only one and a half inches of rifling in the barrel?

I have one but I was wondering what is the (F) mean in the serial number ?
(F) for the Royal Ordnance Factory Fazakerley in the UK
so much cooler than our C7's
thanks for the great video, and you have a really cool accent
what is the difference between the No4MkII and the No4MkI
I was told that the blade bayonet was used most by the Navy, the spike being more common,no expert and do not know if thats correct.
Then why did you take the time to watch it in the first place? Just a thought.
are you sure it is not a No.8 I thought the No.4 was the shortened jungle version?
How'd you get a hold of it? I'm under the impression that Aussie firearm laws are rather restrictive.
@w3b5h06un Fazakerley - the place it was made - outside of Liverpool England

That's pretty much Australia summed up on a table.
@superscoutman why not?!
