I guess they trained a parrot to speak that phrase to Alexa or something, therefore translating that "animally recorded" sentence into a written down post on X and Facebook. Anyway, the rate they are making mistake is increasing my ever recurring suspect that ALL art is degenerating due to some "demoralization campaign": Every big campaign, everything artistic (like comics, videogames, games like Magic, manga, old cartoons, etc) is getting worse and worse so that the Western Countries (USA & Europe) gets more dull and demotivated And ... I can't possibly understand how all of this short-sighted plans get pushed by people waaaaay more experienced in running industries than me like ... WHY? WHY de-valuing those masters of art? WHY? Just to cut a bunch of thousands of dollars? For a company (WotC) that makes MILLIONS? it's a tiny % .... it makes NO sense to me
Kind of agree, kind of disagree. I think they really LOVE their customers. They will buy anything. No matter how damaging it is to the format, immediately or well into the future.
I am so tired... I am tired of the drama, I am tired of what Wizards does to artist, to talented people to players... Ive been getting out more and more... Foundations may be my last set for a very long while. I don't know if you will read this, or if anyone will... or if anyone cares but, to me.... Magic is like a really old friend, who was there for you, in some of the worst times of your life, they may not could help much but they would just go "Hey things aren't so bad, lets go out, meet people have some fun, it will take your mind off things." just the kind of friend who was always there to cheer you up. Then that friend got in a toxic relationship, they don't talk to you like they used to, they don't want to hang out but they will still sell you crap or have a brief talk about the 'good old days' before being cowed by an abusive partner again, and just, doesn't want to talk about the fact they are being abused because they 'got a handle on the situation'. And yeah I know, big corporation's aren't your friend but... it feels like that with magic to me... my analogy may be stupid... but it's why I am not playing anymore.
Magic has meant a lot to me for many years now so I 100% understand where you are coming from. Also I read every comment left on all of my videos on each of my youtube channels.
Wotc said that they wanted to change Secret lairs from “print to demand” model to limited releases, having printing some amount before to “ship” faster. But we didn’t consider the possibility that they would ship so fast that they forgot to put cards on them. This works perfectly for them, if you don’t print the cards you save the money , what a 3D chess move lol.
I'm sick of 99% of MtG art looking like it was made on a computer program. Even if it is, the artists need to focus more on trying to hide that fact. All the art is plastic-y, shiny, overcrowded and busy.
Complain to Marvel about the Secret Lair problems. Tell them that it's damaged your opinions of their brand. They'll rake WotC over the coals if they think their partnership is harming their reputation. WotC/Hasbro might not give two turds what players and customers say, but they do care about their corporate sugar daddies. They're going hard into Universes Beyond, and if companies start thinking that these partnerships might hurt them rather than help, they're going to back out or refuse to work with WotC/Hasbro.
100% go for there wallets if we want to get the msg across to the shit heads at wizards/hasbro. If companies are hesitant to work with them because of quality control issues among other things that could harm there reputation.
I don't think Marvel or, more importantly, Disney could care any less about "damaging the brand". The comics took a nose dive at least a decade ago and the movies have been following the same trend.

The amount of money artists are getting paid now is almost the equivalent of one week's worth of work at $20 an hour. After taxes get taken out as well. Roughly between 600 and 700 bucks that does not feel good man. Wizards of the Coast we can see right through you and we know your true identity. ( Removes wotc mask) Gasp.... Its pot of greed. But it's also sad that Hasbro is squeezing in already squished dried orange praying for more juice. Knowing perfectly well it's empty.
Thank you for shining more light onto these issues Mike. Far too many voices who have left Hasbro/WotC have been silenced by NDAs. These are serious issues affecting the game, players, retailers, and artists moving forward. WotC needs to listen to the core who supports their business, inside and out.
2 months for WotC to rectify a customer service card issue? I'm 3 months, 3 days in to get my Bloomburrow damaged foil cards replaced. Now a couple of weeks ago I got a message that they were putting in an order to replace them and closing the ticket as resolved. That was the last I heard. So I guess I'm awaiting notification that the replacement cards are being shipped. Technically the issue is not resolved since I've yet to receive the replacement cards. They most likely closed out the ticket for their metrics. The longer issues stay unresolved, the worse the customer service metrics look to the bosses.
Donato has made some awesome artwork, and i agree mtg art pre 2017 is worlds better than the art we get now. Oldschool mtg is cool, but i think the bronze age of mtg around ravnica city of guilds had the best mtg artwork. This is why Sorcery Contested Realm is an infinitely better game. All traditional hand painted art, many of the artists were among the original Magic artists, and the artist retain the rights to their art. All this from someone who has been into Magic for 28 years.

It's funny but also pretty sad just how far Magic has fallen. Seeing an artist that's worked along side them for DECADES now just airing his disgust feels really bad, though on some level I'm happy that he can hopefully move on to greener pastures. Also, the royalty system seems quite good for the artist. Because like you said, the artist gets, let's say, 20 cents in royalty (just an example, don't jump down my throat because it's "not accurate"). Well, if we use the number in the video of 100,000 prints, that's the artist making $20,000 dollars off of one art piece. That's pretty damn good if you ask me, especially compared to the $1,000 Donato says they got later on.
Yeah but then you'll get ten times the money for doing the art for a common and almost nothing for doing a big chase mythic. Not a great idea to accept piecemeal wages.
I am very confused as to why they didn't contract _comic book artists_ to do a _comic book_ based Secret Lair. I'd actually be somewhat tempted to get the X-Men cards if hell, I dunno, Adam Kubert or someone worked on them. Just SOME comic artist established with the IP.
...don't comic book artists tend to have a union or something? I vaguely recall that, which would explain it as there's no way Pinkerton users would work with anyone like that. But I might also have just invented that based on a thing I thought I heard once.
I'm not surprised that Marvel gave Donato Giancola a joke of an offer. It is a HUGE problem in comics right now, and it's one of the reasons that comics rely on foreign artists. Page rates are pathetic, but that money will go further when you're offering it to someone in say, Brazil. Even when working with domestic artists, they offer so very little that they get, well...what we see now in Marvel and DC. I've heard stories of as low as $60 USD a page for ART duties coming from Marvel. WotC is not immune to this. Barring a few standouts, Magic art is getting objectively worse. It blows my mind that WotC burns so many bridges with artists who helped build their game. To paraphrase something I've seen someone else post - "Magic doesn't succeed because of WotC, it succeeds in _spite_ of them"
@@BrandonDenny-we1rw I didn't know that. Freaking ridiculous. I refuse to give them a single penny and haven't since 2017, so I've never seen that particular product.

When I first started watching Historian, I thought it was Ed Helms talking about MTG. I was shocked to learm they arent the same person. I stayed anyway cuz I like this guy. Keep doing what you're doing Historian. The hero we all need. 🎉
I fully agree that they need to pay the artist more. But the example you used with the lord of the rings does not stand. LOTR's Is it owned by WOTC, That's owned by totally different company. If for those artists want to stell those works without problem, they wouldn't need to get permission from that company. What should I think that company should do. But with the WotC IP things, I think the artist should If be able to sell that work on secondary markets, It's their art, not WotC. Wizards will not have the art in the first place without the artist. This is no chicken and egg thing. The artist always come first, Then the art is produced. 1. Artists need to be paid more($2k+usd) 2. IP's outside of WotC( Marvel,LotR...), Artist only in permission from the original holder of the I.P, not WotC. 3. With WotC IPs, Artist should people would do outside work with that art. 4. WotC STOP USING AI art.
I recently read Slaying the Dragon by Ben Riggs. This deal with artists was one of the business practices that made TSR go under to then be bought out by WotC. Sad to see this happening again.
You know what sucks? Anytime I order anything magic related on line, I have to do a whole unboxing video to make sure that I don’t get scammed or accused of scamming! I had to do that with a mystery booster box I ordered but got a collectors box instead
I love that a piece of evocative art got you into the game too. For me, I was 9 or 10 and a friend showed me Orgg. Bad card, but man I love that art even today.
I'm so happy you brought up Storm the Seedcore. Whenever anyone asks me about my favorite art, Jason Raineville and Storm the Seedcore is always my response. I own a foil copy of it sleeved and displayed, not for monetary value but because the art is sooo 🤌👌 all his work, as well as Seb McKinnons secret lair work, just chefs kiss
@TheMagicHistorian ngl, half of mtg for me is the artwork, and I'm willing to pay extra if necessary at times. Syd Mills work in the LOTR set is absolutely stunning too. Another great video covering imo a very under discussed issue in WOTC. Thank you!
My iron main secret lair came completely creased on the top. I’ve put in a ticket and not heard back yet. So disappointing the ones they printed aren’t even good quality.
@ it’s always taken them that long big dawg. This is nothing new. I’m just irritated that the quality control is so poor on a product I’m buying directly from them
If you haven't already seen it, check out the original MTG artists' work with Sorcery TCG. Great stuff from Melissa Benson, Margaret Organ-Kean, Jeff Menges.... Frank Frazetta, Ian Miller... Artists and their families retaining copyrights to the art. (and the game itself with amazing game play. Will remain an indie game, but a great one.)
I am interested in talking with you about a possible avenue to hold WoTC and Hasbro accountable for the egregious offenses you spoke about in this video.
Add this: Hasbro sued in investor suit for allegedly lying about overpurchased inventory after pandemic demand Hasbro allegedly ‘misrepresent[ed] and conceal[ed] the extent of its inventory buildup’
The box that wasn't sealed may not be wizard's fault . It could have been stolen in the mail . So i would not just submit a claim to wotc but the post office too.
I got into mtg because of the art. From 1994 to invasion I had every rebecca guay card released unless she did the art of a card received from wining a tournament.
using art on a card with out the consent of the artist is a no no, but using art as inspiration for a group of other artists, seems more like how closely would they copy the art used? The art has more or less become a reference image for the standard of art. if I am thinking of this in the right context, I would like to see how this turns out. Could they not just point to past printed cards by him as a reference? if this is for art of ironman, can they pull up a web art search on google to say "we want something like this" to point at a reference? is there a risk that someone will copy the art that is used as a ref? (Yes) but if that is avoided & the art only shows up in only the style guide? in that case, I would like to see how a court would handle a case like that. I really don't know how consider what can or can't be in an item like a style guide book that should never show up in ads or packaging or on cards, but if they never sell this style guide book, would a court really see that alone as use of art work he should be compensated for. This is a real question running in my mind that I have no answer to. The only eyes that may ever see the art work are people drawing/painting for the new set or secret lair, that would be done in a style close to what they see in the guide. I don't know & I would be interested to see what happens.
i ordered the foil set and only got the black panther one. opened a ticket, then said i have to wait to hear back from Scalefast for further assistance. -_-
You're basically describing the behavior of every big cooperation and they have been doing this for decades. And as long as people keep buying stuff and working for them, they keep doing this.
They may be in legal trouble, but because of the high price.Lawyers, All they have to do is stall. Until Said artist has enough legal debt for all they have to do Is give the artist enough to cover his legal fees and a little bit more and When they say recovered it and they're off the hook again. The parent company may have some issues But they still keep high price lawyers for just such an occasion
Speaking of secret lair mess ups i find it funny i always get an email from UPS long before i get one from wizards (if i even get an email from them) on when my package has been sent out.
I buy mtg artwork, artists make a living only with the secondary market not because of mtg payments. When mtg asks for digital artwork it’s a lose lose for artists and painting collectors
WotC could create unique MTG cards that are only distributed to artists. It would cost them next to nothing and the artists could sell them to increase revenue.
Some of the gripes you bring up are legitimate but many are not. Card quality is actually better than ever. For those that remember, foils were uncollectible and undesirable because of extreme curling and now they aren't ever since throne of eldraine. Any other printing issues make things collectible. I know many people who collect entire binders full of misprints
Card quality is absolutely not better than ever, the foils are even worse now than in the past as they both curl and have rough awful edges. The fact that people collect misprints does not excuse the company for poor quality cards, that position makes zero sense.
@TheMagicHistorian as someone who handles hundreds of thousands of cards a year, I can assure you that the quality is in fact better than ever. Foils do not curl anymore. Wouldn't comment unless I knew what I was talking about...
These issues are what has pushed me into selling out of magic, gonna play sorcery TCG now. All physical, excellent card quality, slower releases. Living the dream
i'm glad WotC is having issues with their "buy limited supply" none sense. i hope they continue having issues while they do this stupid method. And i hope the scalpers are getting it much worse than the players who still believe in WotC.
Hasbro / Wizards is such a sleaze ball / scum bag company. Over the years, Wizards continues to do things that's not Kosher. I hope Granada sues their ass! Wizards does not respect the artists, their employees, and the players. Those problems with the secret lairs is unacceptable. This should not be happening. The quality control in the shipping dept. is appalling. Players getting an opened box without the secret lair cards and getting loose bent cards is ridiculous. Unfortunately, Wizards does not care one bit. You can blame COCKS for all of these problems. Thank you for the video Magic Historian.
I'm still waiting for the my ticket to be resolved from the last superdrop. I got the one that has the Japanese and English Hatsune Miku one, and if you spent X amount of dollars, you get a duskmourn playbooster. When I opened up the drop, I got two Japanese Hatsune lairs instead of a English and Japanese one, and I was missing the play booster. It's been about a month and a half now, and I just got a tracking number for a replacement. But the order only shows that they're going to mail the play booster. I'm still missing the English lair. It's pretty rediculous.
I dont think they want to save on licensing, I think they want to throw Hasbro a bone and get them to do the play mats, prints and at some point I can see some bugger have the bright ideas at WotC about selling the art as NFTs, Imaging what someone would pay for a One Ring NFT... etc rather than the Artist do it.
WotC/Hasbro is by far one of the most unethical demons on the market, yet you're not punishing them. You're still paying money for their garbage. It's your fault - the consumer.
Wotc has screwed up my marvel sld by not giving me my signet when i got the notifications 40 mins after it confirmed my order so i thought it was done no problem only 2 n 1/2 hr wait n they cant even send the card u get for spending more money i havent opened the marvel sld yet that im scared to open them now

Also absolutely right about WOTC having zero respect for anyone.
To paraphrase something I've seen someone else post - "Magic doesn't succeed because of WotC, it succeeds in _spite_ of them"
The mobile game they have uses AI art for the cards and especially all tokens and treasure cards.
@@BrandonDenny-we1rw I didn't know that. Freaking ridiculous. I refuse to give them a single penny and haven't since 2017, so I've never seen that particular product.
@@Firevine I have a "Goldvein Hydra" that makes treasure tokens and i tried looking at to enjoy the beautiful art but what i saw instead was a bunch of objects melding into eachother and none of it made any sense on close inspection.
I want to play Magic so badly but theyre so unfriendly i cant enjoy it.

"AGAIN?!?!?"
When I first started watching Historian, I thought it was Ed Helms talking about MTG. I was shocked to learm they arent the same person. I stayed anyway cuz I like this guy. Keep doing what you're doing Historian. The hero we all need. 🎉
I agree that art work is what captures people to play. It was the original dual lands art work that I absolutely loved
I really hope Eric's Curiosa hires him for Sorcery TCG. They actually care about the art compared to wotc who just wants to use the generic ai slop.
1. Artists need to be paid more($2k+usd)
Magic got so big that WotC thinks it's a privilege to work for their art team so that they don't need to compensate them as much
My favorite game of 20 years is crashing bad....😢
All hail the Commander Master Race!
Same story sadly for the artists. Ask Anson Maddocks about this!!
You just gonna' casually mention that you have yourself as a zombie on a Magic card and not show it? SHENANIGANS!!!
I actually showed it off last night in the livestream where I went over everything Donato had to say. You can see it over there if you like
@TheMagicHistorian hell yeah!
I await the day the artists go “enough is enough. We’re out you pricks.”
secret lair prices on the secondary market is crazy cheap
You know what sucks? Anytime I order anything magic related on line, I have to do a whole unboxing video to make sure that I don’t get scammed or accused of scamming! I had to do that with a mystery booster box I ordered but got a collectors box instead
Yeah its ridiculous it has reached this point
I started working out before work everyday to try and lose the gut..... my bones legit hurt lol.
I feel you my man, I am also exercising to lose weight and build back some of the strength I lost when I became an old wizard
3:56 "Wizards of the Choast" got me 🤣🤣
How do we as consumers help this matter? I really love opening packs, but I may be only buying 2nd hand cards from now on.
Their ordering processes on secret lairs also have problems you get on to order on website down or problem. It say an 1hr it takes longer.
Seb McKinnons art is absolutely fantastic as well
@TheMagicHistorian ngl, half of mtg for me is the artwork, and I'm willing to pay extra if necessary at times. Syd Mills work in the LOTR set is absolutely stunning too. Another great video covering imo a very under discussed issue in WOTC. Thank you!
I saw the thumbnail and was like oh I remember that video how long ago did that happen again...wait it happened again?
My iron main secret lair came completely creased on the top. I’ve put in a ticket and not heard back yet. So disappointing the ones they printed aren’t even good quality.
WOTC is receiving so many help tickets as of late, that it is taking upwards of 2 months to hear back … good luck
@ it’s always taken them that long big dawg. This is nothing new. I’m just irritated that the quality control is so poor on a product I’m buying directly from them
Sort of surprised that Watsy didn't claim exclusive ownership of artwork from the beginning.
WotC 😂it's Embarrassing 😳
The rate of them fucking up is strictly absurd.
I am interested in talking with you about a possible avenue to hold WoTC and Hasbro accountable for the egregious offenses you spoke about in this video.
Add this:
Hasbro sued in investor suit for allegedly lying about overpurchased inventory after pandemic demand
Hasbro allegedly ‘misrepresent[ed] and conceal[ed] the extent of its inventory buildup’
The box that wasn't sealed may not be wizard's fault . It could have been stolen in the mail . So i would not just submit a claim to wotc but the post office too.
I was lucky to get the secret lair, but my cards were missing too. Two months from now and they might not help me with this in the future 😢
Thats interesting, Marvel almost did something with MTG right before the Vs. System game was a thing...
Speaking of secret lair mess ups i find it funny i always get an email from UPS long before i get one from wizards (if i even get an email from them) on when my package has been sent out.
If you are talking about pay not equating to our skills and experience 😅 tell that to corporate
You should start adding links to the sources/ arts you talk about. It adds depth and weight
Donato Giancola is one of my favorite artists for Magic, right next to Richard Kane Ferguson and Ron Spencer.
RKF is literally my favorite mtg artist of all time
Excellent taste
RKF is fantastic.
As long as the tickets are opened and they get resolved. 2 months is fine. It's getting resolved but it does suck that it happened to begin with
These issues are what has pushed me into selling out of magic, gonna play sorcery TCG now. All physical, excellent card quality, slower releases. Living the dream
Blackcleave Cliffs flavortext hits harder and harder
My bones hurt
mine too
i'm glad WotC is having issues with their "buy limited supply" none sense. i hope they continue having issues while they do this stupid method.
The art pulled me into Magic as well. For me it was Infernal Genesis. What an amazing piece of art.
My marvel secret lair delivery belonged to someone in Canada 🇨🇦. WoTC let me keep it and sent a replacement...
27:30
Love the mark rosewater uncanny impersonation 😂😂😂😂
Is this the iron man with all the phyrexian wiring around him thingy
Lookout for the AI era.
It's going to be a party !!
people should start sending complaints to marvel/disney about how poorly wotc has handled their IP
Sounds like the artists should unionize and create standard industry contracts.
Your hype ad for hatchermovietalks made me sub.
#FireMark
Why not show the card on screen at 9:30
So if what I read elsewhere is true, they paying $1000 a piece for art, which seems fine for a weeks work.
For highly skilled labor, factoring in cost of materials, signing over IP rights, and freelance work without benefits, that is not fine at all.
Holy hell that's bad even for wotc on the secret lairs
WotC/Hasbro is by far one of the most unethical demons on the market, yet you're not punishing them. You're still paying money for their garbage. It's your fault - the consumer.
Seems like WoTC needs to send The Pinkertons to handle this.... again.
