      Dear Reckless
Proxies are a necessary evil & Hasbro/WotC also deserve their trouble with illegal forgeries for this nonsense that they are upholding, as well as any other categories of cards in hot demand that they’r not reprinting fast enough in meaningful quantities.

The thing is that those are the prices they were meant to have as collector's pieces from the beginning of the game. Reprints of Reserved List cards would still fetch a high price, but the Reserved List as a concept artificially inflated the prices of cards that were already going to be expensive to begin with, so if that price bubble were to burst, prices WOULD tank. Obviously not to hyperbolic levels like 10 dollars, but it wouldn't be insane to see a 300 dollar card drop to 100 dollars. That's still 66% of its price shaved off.

You can expect a reprint reasonably soon (their annual tins and supplemental products have reprinted some big cards; e.g., Borreload Savage, Phantazmay, etc.). Their preconstructed decks are usually pretty good, to the point that you can pick up 3 of them (~$10 each; $30 total) and a handful of budget cards to make a surprisingly decent deck (Dinosmasher's Fury, Soulburner, even Shaddoll Showdown come to mind).

As someone who played back then, the majority of the complainers were *NOT* players, but rather collectible speculators. I've been saying it for 20+ years that the reserved list is damaging to the longevity of the game, as it has basically made the eternal formats, Vintage and Legacy specifically, impossible to enter for newer players. As such they are barely staying alive these days.
Another "fun" thing that makes the reserved list bullshit is that there are cards from Revised (a.k.a. 3rd edition) are on it, you know, the first all reprint set.
And finally, WotC can get rid of the Reserved List tomorrow if they really wanted. Why? Because it is policy, specifically it's official name is "Official Reprint Policy", as it is policy, they can remove it whenever they want just by making a simple news release announcing its abolition. If they do this, they can start designing sets containing cards from it tomorrow. Any lawsuit would then have to prove that they designed the sets *prior* to the lists removal., and as the design lead time for non-standard legal sets is now down to less than a year, that could mean we could get them as early as fall next year.

      a) Wizards is willing to print cards with very similar effects to reserve list cards, like fork and reverberate.
      b) Reserve list cards wizards doesn't functionally reprint are generally busted and unfun cards that wizards has demonstrated they have no interest in reprinting (they never reprinted a single OG dual from 1994 - 2010 as a judge promo or anything else)
      c) Non reserve list cards are still $100+. Underground sea gets reprinted you not gonna get it for less than $250 unless wizards drastically changes reprint policy
A better strategy is to ban broken cards, because you know, they are busted

Interestingly there are two different aspects at play here.
      1) The whole "legal argument" about promissory estoppel fails as a result entirely because the speculator community has failed to uphold the community side of the promise.
      2) Evidence shows that the value of the original versions will RISE if the cards are reprinted, due to access. Remember that prior to MM1 Tarmogoyf was 80...ish, and after the drop, it spiked up to close to 200 (Obviously it's gone down due to being reprinted another 4 times and due to the metas of modern and legacy) - we've seen this happen with a number of different cards that see play in the largest formats (Modern/EDH/Legacy.)

You can't claim you relied on their "promise" to your detriment if there's no detriment, so your case is DOA. Then even if you could somehow win you'd have no damages. No one is spending $120K ballpark to sue over the fact that duals got reprinted and then doubled in value so they're owed $0. Frankly a stronger case would be investor vs investor against the investors who manipulated the market to suppress prices and corner all the product by nagging wizards into making and retaining the reserved list.

The Reserved List protected value 25 years ago and even 15 years ago, but now the value is in the collectibility and the purpose of the purported contract has now been frustrated.
WOTC could modify and or eliminate the reserved list and it would not damage values one bit, in fact I think the vintage cards would increase in value.

This is not true for reserve list cards recently (within the last 2-5 years) purchased, especially the Revised dual lands. Prof omits Revised from his discussion and examples, let's evaluate Birds of Paradise (Approximate MTG Goldfish / large retailer / ebay Pricing):
      Alpha $3000 (high variance)
      Beta: $1400
      Unlimited: $170
      ...
      Revised $15
      Modern Printings $7-8
      BaB Promo $50
So for birds, it's a 10x jump from Unlimited (3rd) to Revised (4th). It's 200x jump from Revised (3rd) to Alpha for Birds.
      Same exercise with Underground Sea:
      Alpha: $7500 (high variance)
      Beta: $2800
      Unlimited: $1000
      Revised: $650
      It's a 2x jump from Unlimited (3rd) to Revised (4th). It's only 10-15x jump from Revised (3rd) to Alpha.
Convenient omission? A 200 fold price increase vs a 15 fold price premium? The mass reprinting of original Dual Lands would crush Revised Dual prices. There will be casualties of "just print", and they're mostly invested players who already own their Revised duals.

@@somedude3236 See here's the issue with the argument of an "$800+ card" losing value. The investment into that card in the first place was like $3.50 at most. It's a $3.50 card that has it's value inflated because it's never been reprinted. Though as has been used as an example, Shivan Dragon alpha has a value still well above $5000 even though there are modern reprints of the card. The proxy Collector's Edition has a value of around $130 even though there has been modern reprints of the card.
Reprints don't crush the value of older cards, first edition prints will ALWAYS hold value. Even if you look into other card games, as someone else here has already mentioned, a Blue-Eyes White Dragon (DDS) holds a value of $850 for a DAMAGED copy. Close to $2000 for a NM copy, and it's one of the most reprinted cards in Yu-Gi-Oh. If a card is going to hold value, it will hold that value wither it's reprinted a lot or not, because people will always want to own a first edition or shiny copy of the card and there are only so many copies of the first edition printing.
The issue with MTG is there are to many cry baby investors that don't give two shits about the game who will cry the moment you dare threaten their "investment" for the sake of making the game better. You dare add some risk to their investment and it's like you've kicked their dog. The game is far better off ignoring those investors and doing what is best for the player base.

As someone who has waged many rhetorical battles on this subject, it's so good to hear the avalanche of dispositive arguments coming from the lips of one of the community's most esteemed thinkers.
It is worth noting that some affirmative legal arguments in favor of Reserved List abolition are also quite strong. The dilution of brand that comes from widespread counterfeiting cuts against the argument that whatever the plaintiffs would be asking for in a promissory estoppel claim is "in the interests of justice". There is also the fact that Hasbro has financial duties to its shareholders, and the egregious sums of money WotC is leaving on the table by *not* reprinting ABUR duals and company would be amount to an abdication of their responsibility to those shareholders.
Furthermore, notice of an upcoming change to the policy set out more than a few years would dry up the claim that investors were acting in reliance on an immutable promise in the first place.
And let us not forget the reality of the theoretical lawsuit: it would all but certainly be a class-action suit. Counsel would be assigned, a fair settlement crafted to appeal to the court's punitive instincts would be reached (several orders of magnitude below the several billion USD that r/mtgfinance tells itself it would be owed), and every Magic player who responded to their letter in the mail would get all of a few cents by check.

Hot take: what's up with these entitled opinions? Have you ever had your chase card reprinted (or banned) right after you finally acquired it and felt that loss? Maybe you're too new to have experienced it. Multiply that across the most invested (time, effort, money) players/collectors who have bought in, supported, and built this game.
"Reprint everything" to make modern formats more accessible to the masses unfortunately meant killing (creating a glass ceiling and slowly eroding) the value of modern cards and collections... and now you're whining about the logical conclusion that modern price instability and aggressive reprinting has lead to the value of modern cards collapsing and another reserved list buyout? Congrats, modern will be more accessible - but at the cost you'll never again feel comfortable holding multiple copies of modern chase cards or buying anything "because it could probably be reprinted in 6 months on the next List or Mystery draft set... or even at any moment as a way cooler, flashier secret lair".
I'm okay with modern accessibility, I like having most aspects of the game being more affordable, and who knows maybe the ultra flashy premium versions of things might retain some value if they're not printed into the ground. I now wish I had bought missing reserved list cards to fill out my collection more at an affordable price, but could say the same thing to 2010 or 2000 me. But I'm happy I'm financially stable, have some money saved, and finally decided to acquire copies of certain reserved cards because buying after this mania would have been a hard pill to swallow again as a long time player.
If you're playing commander and feel price gated, just use gold border or a sharpie or even make your own custom alters if you're playing cEDH. Go nuts, it's casual, Rule 0. Or ask Wizards to make a gold border set. If you want to play legacy, save some money, spend some time, work for what you want and acquire some sleeve-playable copies of what you need... and rest assured that even though you're spending potentially a few hundred (to maybe a thousand dollars), at least your cards might retain some value thanks to the reserve list. Or request WoTC to start a system where you can "pay for a sanctioned rental set of proxies" - enfranchised players would likely be fine with that, it means they don't have to play with their expensive cards at tournaments, and no additional supply means their cards retain value which was the intent of the reserve list policy.
I'm not a huge fan of speculators and hoarders but that's the reality of an unregulated market (let's talk insider trading)... I haven't completed my collection nearly to where I wish it could be, but I did manage to see this price spike coming as a result of policy changes and have the majority of what I want to play. If I'm at a position to get more in another 2 years after the hype dies down and cycle resets or see an opportunity, then fantastic. If not, then I'll advocate the above solutions.
But maybe I should just sell my collection because we should do away with the last 30 years of history and scarcity of a COLLECTIBLE card game: collections should never appreciate or remain stable over time, they should only depreciate and be reprinted, so why would you ever collect at today's price besides liking the pretty picture cardboard? Let's flip the entire business strategy that has built the game. Trust, stability, and confidence in a market are important but if you're cool with crashing the value of the entire secondary market then we have very different opinions on how that would impact the future of the game.

I'm familiar with every card in Modern because I've been tracking spoiler seasons since Eighth Edition. This is not a matter of old player vs. new player. Some causes are worth supporting because they are right.
You're not the only person to get burned by a reprint. You're not the only player who's invested in the game. You're not the only player who should be allowed to be. Take the hit and get over it.

    • @Greg8178
      @Greg8178 3 роки тому

Why? (Serious question) I've been an on and off player and I always here this. Why do people want to play dual lands so bad, other than just to "play with dual lands"? There are better lands to use that have been printed in newer sets. They're just basic dual lands with no other effects. You can get dual lands from commander legends that do the same thing. Just curious, don't hate me for asking.

    • @nijimazero
      @nijimazero 3 роки тому +1

Because those are the best bi-color mana cards that exist. They can produce both types of mana without any drawback (they come untapped in the field without spécial condition) and they are treated as both basic lands (for example a volcanic island can trigger effects that require you to have an island and the ones that require you to have a mountain).
In a Commander deck the only card that is better to get mana is Commanding Tower but you can only have one in you deck so adding the dual lands adds some consistancy

@@olah420, I don't think that the feedback on their website would be useful, but I have an idea to team up with influent MTG personalities in order to start a more serious and coordinated movement to change the concept around the "spirit" of the Reserved List, that is what stops the printing of cards similar to RL cards (like Legendary Duals with ininfluent drawback in Legacy and so on). The total abolition is not possible as for now, but this is a point where we can start. How can I contact you?

Wizards is perfectly aware of how many people want this, this is just a "fight" between who they think they should "benefit" because they think they should stand by their original players that have been collecting over 20 years or if they should make this accessible to new players and risk getting backlash from those early players that stood by magic all these years.

This comment is so wrong. Eliminating the reserved list wouldn't damage values? Seriously? Cause WoTc wouldn't reprint these cards to oblivion, right?. How many tarmogoyf or Scalding Tarn versions are there? Now imagine if there was just one version, from a set long ago never having been reprinted. Would be worth a lot more right? Of course.
Wizards will never replace the reserved list because it's the shining jewel of MTG. Anyone looking from an outside perspective who's never played goes damn there's cards worth thousands. Now imagine no reserved list, from outside perspective looks like a stupid kids card game. Would lamborghini be as respectable if it was as cheap as toyota's? Stop complaining about exclusivity. You're a socialist, clearly.
Can't have everything in life but there are goals you can attain which feel so much more rewarding BECAUSE OF EXCLUSIVITY. Buying a Mox Ruby after saving up for months feels way better than having x4 of every mox cause it's in a standard set and you play draft every weekend. What fun is that? Stop bitching cause you can't have it all. I wish I had power 9, I enjoy having something to look forward to.
