      @@ikeeight8 Yes, the history of the Beatles cannot be told in 10 minutes. This is only a fragmentary outline. There are probably 1000 or more books written and one have to invest several hours just to read the Wikipedia entries for all the information.

    It really wasn't the instant success story this brief summary of their career seems to suggest. I don't know why some people cite 1960 as the year they started (it might be because that was the year they settled on the 'Beatles' name). But, in fact, they'd really started in 1957, when the teenaged John and Paul first met while John was playing with his skiffle band, the Quarrymen, at a local church fete. Since John could only play 4-string banjo chords on his cheap 6-string guitar, and had no idea how to tune the instrument, he was pretty impressed when it turned out Paul knew lots of real 6-string guitar chords, could tune the thing, and to top it off, knew all the lyrics to all the verses of Eddie Cochran's Twenty-Flight Rock!
    Within a matter of weeks he was in the band, and his even younger guitar playing friend George, whom he knew from riding the same school bus, was also admitted (reluctantly at first, on John's part) at some point over the following months. As other band members came and went, J, P and G remained to form the nucleus of the band that went on to become the legendary Beatles.
    In 1962, once they'd scored a recording contract, on the advice (possibly misunderstood) of their record producer, George Martin, they swapped their current drummer for Ringo, whom they already knew quite well from Liverpool and Hamburg, where he'd played with another Liverpool band, sitting in with the Beatles occasionally when their own drummer was otherwise engaged..
    So, by the time they got their first UK Number 1 hit Please Please Me in early '63 and 'Beatlemania' became a thing, they'd been playing together (minus Ringo), honing their craft for around 6 years of hard slog. Definitely no overnight sensation but a band that had well and truly 'paid their dues'...

      It was the numbers 1-5 in the Billboard charts in 1964. But that is now history. Drake egalized the record. Taylor Swift beat it twice. The first time in 2022 with places 1-10 and in 2024 with places 1-14. It must be mentioned, that in the era of streaming it has become almost normal for the leading artists to occupy several top 10 places in the charts with their new album. Less than 3 is almost a disappointment.

    • @lauraallen55
      @lauraallen55 4 дні тому

      @@ikeeight8 It was more than just sarcastic. He was discussing how young people were more involved and cared more about popular music - using Beatles as an example as they caught on big at the time - than they did about religion or church. The whole interview is available online, but he was lamenting the fact young people cared more about some pop band than they did about religion - a sign of the times. He was completely taken out of context, and a big campaign of hating them ensued. He later apologized even though the interviewer/writer who did not attribute him correctly truly owed him the apology!

  • @debjorgo
    @debjorgo 6 днів тому +6

    It was John who made the controversial statement, talking about the decline of religion in the UK. He said that there were more people going to Beatles' concerts than were going to church. By the time the comment made it to the US, it became known as "the Beatles are bigger than Christ statement". You can imagine how that went over in some spots of this country. But it was actually a radio station that was on the edge of going out of business that had a Beatle album burning event for publicity. It worked and was copied all over the US.
    Of course, when the Beatles released their next album, it was the best-selling album of theirs yet and most people rebought the albums they burnt.

    Yoko did not break up the Beatles. They were falling apart ever since Brian died. He died of a mixture or drink and sleeping pills. He was their manager before they were famous. After he did none of them could agree on who to manage the band that was not biased against or for some members. George was sick of it all. He had a huge backlog of songs and only got two or three of his songs on a Beatles album. John really kept playing with George and Ringo while Paul made his first album with him playing all the instruments. Paul put together Wings and still plays with that core of guys.
    I think they all wanted to go do their own thing and were sick of all the Beatles hype. Everything they did the media had to find a reason to pick apart and attack them for.
    Had John not been murdered in 1980 I am sure they would have played together again but not so sure they would have made any records together. Amazing band that was really put together by the Buddy Holly blueprint of having your own band, writing your own songs, and recording them the way you want. Sounds weird now but Buddy was the first to ever do that.

      @@ikeeight8 The Anthology series is very good and fills in a lot. One funny part is when they ask Paul a question then he says you would have to ask George. George says you would have to ask Ringo and John says "Only John could tell you that".
      People spend years looking up shows and recording sessions, look for news reports and put together their every move day to day, hour by hour. They were just living it so those kind of details even back in 1994-1996 were long ago and not things they thought about.

      @@ikeeight8 Both john and George were over it, but Paul wanted the band to stay together and kind of took control. This is a very oversimplified history. By the way, they did not form in 1960. They formed in 1957 under the name The Quarrymen with different membership. The membership changed over time reaching its final form in 1962. In 1960, they only went through the final one of several name changes. Previously, they had been the Quarrymen, the Beatals, and the Silver Beetles.
