Billy Preston is on keys here. Illy was a friend from when they played in Hamburg.
That Get Back documentary is phenomenal! Must watch!
This was an iconic moment in music history from the greatest band ever ✌🏻😎
This was January 30, 1969, and it was the very last time the 4 Beatles ever performed together in public. The entire rooftop concert ran somewhere around 35-40 minutes before the cops shut them down, and that's all in the documentary.
Yes, this was their final live performance.
Thanks for confirming. Must be a bittersweet feeling for longtime fans.
That's Billy Preston on the keyboard playing that riff. George asked him to stop in during the recording sessions to cut some of the tension in the studio. He wound up playing on several songs, especially Get Back.
@@SaeedReacts. For me, it is not bittersweet because we have it for posterity and is a great performance. What was sad was when they broke up. It's like the 60's ended and so did they e.g. the end of an era.
@@pvank1799 Some called Billy Preston the fifth Beatle I am told. Billy Preston had a solo career after that, starting in 1971
I was 11 when they hit the scene in 1963. My young heart fell in love immediately and all these decades later, I can still remember the magic of those years. Amazing time to be alive.
🌸 the rooftop concert was iconic
Lifelong Beatles fan here, I saw them live in 1964 when I was 15. It’s wonderful to relive all this with you, it was an amazing time. I was so lucky, the 60’s was my whole teenage years ❤
Such an incredible song and performance. I have been playing this song since i recorded my reaction. And i watched the entire Get Back documentary as well now. So good!
Thanks for watching.
John and Paul played off each other so effortlessly, and their voices blended marvelously. Even at the end, when there was great tension and the band was on the verge of breaking up, you can see how much fun they still had playing together. One of the amazing things about this performance is that they had only just worked this song out downstairs in their studio hours before, with John scribbling the lyrics on scraps of paper as he came up with them. Those were truly magical times.
Gotta ❤ Lennon and McCartney!
The Beatles were planning on doing a live concert event for TV to wrap up their album project Let it Be. In addition they were shooting film footage of how they created the album. But in the end they couldn't agree on where, and how they would do the live concert. They had stopped touring in 1966. So, at the last minute they decided to stage a live concert on the roof of their company's (Apple Records) building on Savile Row in London. They had no permits, permissions etc. So, neighboring businesses called the cops and the concert was cut short. The streets below were filling up with people as word spread and traffic was stopped creating a lot of problems. The people on the streets initially had no idea what was happening.
The concert lasted about 45 minutes. I don't know, if a longer performance was planned.
@@braudabo Well, the cops were on the roofs before it was over. They physically turned off, or made Mal turn off, George's amp. George reached over and turned it back on. Plus it was cold. John was blowing on his hands half the time.
The "Get Back" movie is an absolute must see. I love that it not only shows the division of the final years; but, also the fun they were still having
Many of us were fortunate enuf to experience them one album at a time. I can see how it would be overwhelming for you
So true.
Looking back from the beginning, they went from pop, to rock(?)in the mid'60's, to psychedelic next, then kinda back to rock at the end. I'm glad I was alive to watch their progression from start to the end(breakup)
Me, too!
Pop-rock-psychedelia and back doesn't quite hit the mark. Rock ('n'Roll) was always present and there were also easily a dozen subgenres, including excursions into what we now call world music, often style-defining trips, in which the Beatles presented themselves with extraordinary ease, something, that makes them so fascinating.
@@braudabo Oh hell, I'm not a professional rock critic/expert. Early Beatles were almost bubblegum pop. As they evolved, their music became more complex. My first comment was just my opinion. Do I need to put a disclaimer on my comments now? I can
@@rubroken No, I don't think so.😃 I just wanted to complete the list. But the Beatles never had anything to do with bubblegum pop, though. Maybe lyrically here and there. Even a lot of the tracks from 1962-1965 are musically, melodically and compositionally, are very interesting and full of sophistication and high aesthetics.
@@braudabo You're right, they were here long before bubblegum music. But I think pop fits for a lot of their early music
Some bands are guitar driven, some vocals. This band, and these guys, were all lead vocalists in their own right. Along with all their other attributes.
Many guitar heavy metal oriented folks don't get that the Beatles were variety and a vocal band first and foremost. And songwriters. They grew up with rock and roll but also all kinds of other music and infused it into their own. Then these folks hear here While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Helter Skelter, Yer Blues, that kind of stuff and exclaim "now yer talkin.'" What a laugh and a limited musical preference. Back in the day the Beatles didn't have kiss anybody's hind, they just did different style and didn't have to apologize of kowtow to anyone.
the Beatles were astonishing, from the start of their careers to the end of the Beatles, and beyond into their solo careers... there really is nobody comparable (closest is the Rolling Stones)... they did another take of this song, probably because John muffed some of the lyrics (when he' singing gibberish).
You're right! The world did go with the Beatles on a journey. A very important journey for society of transformation, evolution and maturity.
The resulting album, Let It Be (1970), was the last to be released, but Abbey Road (1969) was the last to be recorded. Incidentally, Don't Let Me Down wasn't included in the album but was the B side to the Get Back single.
That's right. They held Let It Be for release after Abbey Road. Abbey Road, to me, is their piece de resistance/crowning achievement...at least for me.
Yet another single where I prefer the B side to the A.
Brrrrrrrr....looks sooooo cold up there!!! That is Billy Preston for sure on the keyboards...i have always loved the Beatles...no one like them...thanks Saeed
@@randystalnaker6700 It was 6 degrees 42F.
@@randystalnaker6700 I was down below in the street and it was pretty cold from what I remember…but the memory has kept me warm all these years. 🎶🎶🎶👍
@@davidhampshire7723 Lol...I can't imagine a better experience than being there to witness that performance...
@ only heard it, didn’t see much..but yes, very fortunate. 🎶
@randystalnaker6700 John Lennon made a comment that it was difficult to play chords, because he's fingers were going numb. I think that they'd met Billy Preston year's before in Hamburg.
Remember they had played thousands of hours together - they were a good band regardless of how famous they became for innovating new ways to present music.
"Don't Let Me Down" was recorded in 1969 during the "Let It Be" sessions. The band recorded the song with keyboardist Billy Preston. The Beatles performed this song twice during their rooftop concert in January 1969.
I believe that was Billy Preston on the keyboard. He worked with them on and off for a few years. John Lennon was indeed married before Yoko. Cynthia was married to him early on and had a son with him - Julian - but John didn’t have much contact with him, to the point that Paul actually spent more time and attention to the young boy than John did. Of course, Julian has since become a musical artist himself, and looks a lot like his father. By the way, Paul wrote the iconic “Hey Jude” for Julian.
Yes, it is Billy Preston
and John had a son with Yoko named Sean. Sean also performs. He was acknowledged on the song on John's last album called "Double Fantasy" (he alternates songs with Yoko's songs). The song is called "Beautiful Boy" and is very sweet.
I was wondering if that was the great Billy Preston
The fifth Beatle
Julian, the inspiration for, "Hey Jude", also sounds quite a bit similar to his father...❤
I love the sound of this. They evolved so much musically but my fave of them is when they sound raw, with this kind of groove. Reminds me of a really good garage band 💚🎶🎵
Billy Preston’s organ is standout !!!!
Electric piano.
This was the last time they performed live
Thanks for letting me know!
The police broke it up for noise violations after a nearby business lodged a complaint. Always seems to be sourpuss in the crowd... I'm sure the street crowd was disappointed for the performance to be cut short. They were & are legends...what a gift...❤️🎶🎤
@@noblshtplz yeah there's always someone to throw a wrench into the works but honestly, all this time later, the coppers trying to get in and make them stop simply adds to the story. I think it makes it that much more interesting.
Probably because it was on Seville Row…. ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
So well said, Saeed! They could do it all through their evolution. This one is bittersweet…it was their last live performance together. I get teary-eyed even today. They are my all-time favorite. Talent galore! ❤
This was the greatest live performance in the history of live music.
My friends and I would drive around in one friend’s car listening to the radio for the DJ to play their latest song at the appointed time. Then we would talk about how much we liked the song and why. These were singles, not the whole album at once. We are 17,18 and 19. Little did we know they would be loved by millions for more than 60 years now!❤❤❤❤ John, Paul, George and Ringo (Richard).
A Day in the Life, Tomorrow Never Knows, She is Leaving Home, Helter Skelter, Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane, Dear Prudence, For the Benefit of Mr. K., Taxman, I Am the Walrus, and so many more.
Thanks, Saeed, for playing my request. It is a very rich song and the more you dive in, the more there is to dive in about The Beatles. I recommend watching Beatles 64 first, and then watching "Get Back". To me, the "Get Back" documentary was extraordinary for many reasons, not the least of which is the amazing sound and video quality that Peter Jackson was able to create through more modern technology of 2021. It was a complete labor of love. You feel like you are there. and it is very special, especially to die-hard fans. Their later albums like Sgt. Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour (also a TV special) and the White Album are full of experimentation with sound (such as playing sounds backwards and more), with the evolving technology of the times, and they also began to include classical music instruments like violin, cellos, french horns, and clarinet, in addition to their continuing exploration with sitar and the sound of eastern music. It's a beautiful evolution with so many different styles of music. Excited for you to keep discovering.
Never seen this version. John played a little prank on them and sang some gobbledygook in the last verse instead of the actual lyrics and the guys laughed. Was so funny! The Beatles liked to goof around. Such a shame they disbanded! Thank you for the wonderful version!
Thanks for introducing me to this performance. I wasn't aware that Peter Jackson made that documentary. Much to discover!
@@SaeedReacts. Yup! Here's the wiki page for more info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles:_Get_Back This video is getting a lot of viewings. Awesome!!

Love that you are diving into The Beatles. ❤❤. My absolute Favorite. They changed the world of music
It's been a great journey so far. Looking forward to get to know them and their music better.
10 years old at the start of the Beatles. 72 now, feels the same. GOAT.
Love this recording of the Beatles at the end of thier time together. You mentioned the riff at the end of your reaction at 7:49, I'm pretty certain that is by the talented Billy Preston on keyboards and not Paul. You can see Billy clearly at 3:02 and after that you see part of his head to the left of Paul's guitar. Billy played keyboards on the Get Back sessions and played with the Stones Eric Clapton among others. He is sometimes referred to as the Fifth Beatle. He cowrote "You Are So Beautiful" made famous by Joe Cocker. He had several hits of his own including "Nothing From Nothing" and "Will It Go Round in Circles".
Great reaction Man, thanks. Anyone that's truly fallen in love, know's that it's an unstopable force.
The GOAT Billy Preston on the electric piano.

My favorite Beatles song!
Just a few seconds after the line "I'm in love for the first time", you can see Yoko sitting down, at the far right of the screen.
Pete Best was the original drummer with The Beatles but ofcourse Ringo Starr turned up!! When I was working in Liverpool I met him as he was a Manager for th business I was working for. Couldn't believe it when I met him quite often. Donkeys years ago!! He was with the Beatles from 1960 - 1962, not long ago!! It was the B side of the single Get Back.
Previous to this, the last time they performed live was during a US tour with 8 shows in 11 days, and the last concert was August 29, 1966 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. So it was about 2 and a half years since they played live until this impromptu appearance. During their 3-4 weeks of working on this project, they were coming up with a number of different ideas for a finale to this project, and the idea of just going upstairs onto the roof was a last minute thing, formulated only in the last several days. They also had a drop-dead date at the end of the month, because Ringo was committed to start work on a film with Peter Sellers the following week, called The Magic Christian.
Growing up listening to The Beatles. Went to their movies Help Yellow Submarine. When me and my girlfriends went to see Let It Be at the movies we thought they would go on forever. Unfortunately a day or two later seeing this movie we heard the worst words ever The Beatles broke up and are no more. That was the first grieving episode I went thru They are still the GOAT and will always be. Thanks for the bittersweet memory ❤
Thanks, Saeed - what a great video.. and "raw" performance.. love it and appreciate your reaction!
People were on surrounding rooftops to watch. The Beatles were not perched on a peaked roof. It was across the street.
That was great!👏👏👏
Yes, the rooftop concert on January 30, 1969 was their final public performance as a group.
The rooftop is my happy place. And I naturally gravitate to John’s voice and songwriting so this particular song is a wonderful choice ❤❤❤❤
This was the next to last album that they recorded, with the working title of Get Back, and then a long convoluted story of production issues and band drifting apart, delayed it for over a year. The producer/engineer Glyn Johns who did several of the Rolling Stones classic albums, had engineered the Get Back sessions, and did two mixes of album, but they were both rejected by the Beatles. Months after these recording sessions, they got together to do one last album, and they recorded and released Abbey Road in September 1969, which was the last studio album that they made. After that, in 1970, the Get Back project was resurrected, now renamed Let It Be, which included the original documentary film and accompanying soundtrack. The audio tapes were given to Phil Spector who did the final mix for the soundtrack, and that was ultimately released as their final studio LP, Let It Be, in May 1970.
They were still actually very young at this point, with Ringo being the oldest at age 28 when they did this concert.
In addition to John, Paul, George, and Ringo, the great Billy Preston was also playing on electric piano.
Hi Saeed! I love this performance! I've watched it many times. This is the era of the Beatles that I like the most. You heard their first 2 albums, and now something from their last album. So you see how much they morphed over the course of their career. I really love your Beatles journey. 🙂
Pure magic!
🌸 this was the last time they ever played together
Listen to Paul McCartney and wings live 1976 what the Beatles could sound like
Thanks for the recommendation.
Gotta love it when Lennon forgets the lyrics and Harrison tries to stifle a laugh.
Et McCartney who breathe the following verse
Damn, I love watching the boys do their thing on that rooftop!
Great song and LIVE in a perfect place of this legendary band !!
Perfect place? They froze their ass off up there on the roof lol. January 30, 1969.
Nice reaction. I'm sure they were all high but Ringo looks like he has tomb stones in his eyes.
I read where Ringo said that it was so cold on that roof that his wife gave him her coat.
This part of the Get aback documentary was special; I never realized how this whole rooftop thing came about, so it was awesome to see how everything worked at the time. You’ll enjoy it! There’s also a short vid on UA-cam that’s like a 20 minute primer on the history of the Beatles that might be worth watching, it gives you a great overview without diving into too much detail.
There is also a movie called "Across The Universe" that is amazing. It's not the Beatles, but a story set to their music.
At my age, this one hit hard with the Vietnam War inclusion. I lost a lot of classmate to that war.
OK, if you're deep-diving through the Beatles catalog on Patreon... well, I guess I'll be seeing you on Patreon.
Next to last album recorded, last one released. Some of the video from Let It Be sessions is of rehearsal of some songs that we're recorded later on Abbey Road, and even some of George's first solo album after the breakup.
This is the last LIVE performance by The Beatles from January 1969. The "GET BACK" documentary is fascinating, but it is very long, nearly 7 hours in length. P.S. The late, great Billy Preston is on keyboards. ☮️
Their Apple roof top performance inspired U2’s video “Where the Streets Have No Name”.
Love seeing somebody so captivated by the Beatles. Love the reactions dude
It's been such a great journey discovering their music. Thanks for watching!
@ it’s a never ending rabbit hole listening to them haha
Love this song and video, all the Beatles looked so Bad-ass. ✌🏽
The fifth Beatle " Billy Preston " is playing piano on this. He was good friends with all of them and often stepped in on a recording session.
This is not quite accurate. Preston was a good friend of the Beatles, but apart from appearing with them in the rooftop concert documented in the Peter Jackson directed documentary “Get Back,” Preston only recorded with the Beatles a handful of times. His most notable contribution was on the single “Get Back” which was credited as the Beatles with Billy Preston. That was the only time another artist received credit on a Beatles recording. Besides “Get Back” Preston played background electric organ on two or three tracks on the “Abbey Road” album.
Oh the good ole days! I saw this at the theater back in the day. I think the movie was called Let it Be. 1970?? Oh the gorgeous hair of the 70's
You should also watch the movies A Hard Days Night (1964), Help (1965), the Shea Stadium Concert (1965) Yellow Submarine (1968) Let It Be/Get Back (1970) as well as the just released Beatles "64.
“They got together to write and record an album in three weeks…” Actually, the original idea was to perform live songs from their #1 hit album (just released a month prior, The White Album). But the Beatles being artists, they were not content to perform past hits ..or even current hits. Instead, they wrote and recorded all NEW songs. They were artists driven to create art.
John did have a son Julian Lennon he looks like John and sounds like him too. 😊
Oui j'adore ❤❤❤❤
Hi, You have to watch the recovered last film Let it Be and then the documentar y Get Back. Pure beauty❤❤❤

@@morganmcintosh7859 Thanks! I can't get to all comments anymore like i used to, but i do try to reply to some each day. Appreciate you, my friend!
How did it end? Yes, it's all in the documentary, the cops ended it, peacefully. And the concert ends with one of the most iconic lines ever uttered in music. After they finished playing, John said, as if addressing the world as the audience "Thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we passed the audition." That's included on the Phil Spector mix of Let It Be. After that, they went back downstairs and continued work on the album, and I believe the documentary shows them in the studio, listening to some playbacks of what they had just recorded.
There is an edited version of this video, without the lyric mistakes, on the official Beatles channel. It is the Beatles video with the highest number of views on UA-cam. It's not pure "live"- the used some sound from other takes of the same sessions, but it looks live.
I still laugh at that point where John forgets his line and just makes sounds. The next time around Paul makes sure John gets it right!
An amazing band 👍❤️
You should see all five songs from this rooftop concert. I think that's when the police shut it down.
Funny how young reactors are flipping out over a B side that was "in my day," okay to Beatles fans, certainly better than some, but not the main focus as one of the top Beatles songs. It was the flipside to the studio version of the Get Back single released in 1969 in Spring. They did NOT include it on the Let It Be album at all. released around June 1970 in the USA. It was a studio version of Don't Let Me Down on the flip side.
Evolution... Great word, from She Loves You in 1963 to this in Jan 1969. Not even 6 full years... John was 28 here and Paul was still only 26.😊
That is almost a revolution.
I have since watched the Get Back documentary and that was amazing to see how this came about.
A few enthusiasts have recommended you watch the "Get Back" series. However, I recommend it only for the most fanatical of Beatles fans (of which I am probably one), because it is extremely long (several installments) & very slow-moving. But do not despair; the last part, the rooftop concert, is well worth watching, including the half-hearted attempts by the police to shut it down.
I don't know if Linda Eastman was there, but Yoko Ono and Maureen (Mo) Starkey were both sitting along the brick wall during the concert. It was very cold, being late January, and Ringo was wearing his wife's red coat.
This was the last time we ever saw the Beatles together on TV or in a movie or anything else. It was done in business district at lunch time. The streets filled up with people in some business owners complained and the police came to shut them down you can see the police standing around while they finish the set
The guys standing dangerously on the slanted roof were spectators
This was originally from their 1970 movie "Let It Be" which is showing now on Disney+. We'll worth watching. They do around six songs, till the cops make them stop. The album "Let It Be" was the second to last recorded, but the last released, due to them getting bored with the project and filming. They went on to record "Abbey Road" which was their last, and greatest album.
Great reaction. I was an American going to high school in London about 2 mi away from this gig when it went down. There wasn't even any press on it the next day, because it hadn't been announced. Yes, this is the last time the boys played together live. But they had another great album ahead of them ... "Abbey Road," recorded six months later.
Wow! So you were that close? And only found at after?
Hi there 👋 I hope you can read this. The most funny thing about this song, is when John lennon forgot the lyrics and he does something like scatting with the words and laughs about it after. All this while keep playing flawless the guitar 😊how good is that? ✌️ peace
CLASSICCCC SAEED, PART OF THE "ROOFTOP" CONCERT! 👍😊SO THE KEYS PLAYER WAS ( BILLY PRESTON ) YOU MAY KNOW OF A HUGE HIT SONG THAT HE DID: WILL IT GO ROUND IN CIRCLES
The Rooftop Concert is part of musical history, it was all in the 3rd episode of Peter Jackson's Get Back. You should watch the entire documentary which runs around 7-8 hours split over 3 episodes, but if you just want the rooftop, at least do the 3rd episode.
They played on the roof because they were afraid of the crowds. They're contract said they had to perform a live show, so this fulfilled the contract a live show.
Turns out they were right to be afraid with John being shot by a fan and George was stabbed by a fan after she broke into his home.
Just watched "64" on Disney +. Great documentary about the cultural phenomenon of Bestlemania that swept the U.S. during the Beatles first concerts in America.
Get Back is about the creation of the album "Let it Be." The Beatles' final live performance. The documentary is worth every one of its 9 hours (seriously, it's fabulous).
Three or four days after this recording, they were back in the studio to record their final album, " Abbey Road."
I want to watch it, but i was thinking maybe i will watch Get Back first. So after your comment i will definitely do it this way 😃
1:55 lead in 🙌
John forgot the words there. That's why George was laughing.
In 1956, John Lennon started a school band called "The Quarrymen". They went to The Quarry bank school. In 1957, his band mate IVAN SANDERSON, introduced him to a 14 year old kid who could actually remember lyrics to songs (unlike John who made a lot of his up as he went) named Jimmy McCartney (James Paul McCartney._) He asked Paul to join after a performance of Eddie Cochran's 20 flight rock. A year later, Paul's bus mate to school, George Harrison (13 years old) impressed John and Paul with an audition on the top of a double decker bus (George's dad was a bus conductor) The rest of the quarrymen had left, and it was now just John, Paul and George, playing at dances and basement parties. Occasionally, they would get a drummer here and there, but it wasn't until 1960 that they hired Pete Best to drum for them, and also John's college friend, Stu Sutcliffe was on bass. Their names were, "Johnny Silver and the Moondogs", Long John and the Silver Beetles, "The Silver Beatles" and then, thanks to Stu, "The Beatles" a play on words involving a drum beat, Beat poetry, and the insects, honoring their hero, Buddy Holly, (and the Crickets). After 2 years of scrambling the UK and Hamburg Germany, a fill in drummer, Ritchie Starkey (Ringo Starr) sat in with them (he was a long time, well known Liverpool musician and a pro to them, and the best drummer in England at the time) Since nobody could be fired, they had their manager talk Pete Best into quitting the band, and Ringo was in that weekend. For 8 more years they created music, having hit it big with LOVE ME DO just weeks after Ringo joining, and PLEASE PLEASE ME a few months later. Their first album, recorded all in one day, months later was on the American charts in 1964, with all the top 5 spots on the top 100 being Beatles songs. All 14 songs were on the top 40 AT THE SAME TIME. They released 2-3 albums per year and toured incessantly until 1966, then being music studio masters. Since the Beatles split, McCartney released a total of 50 albums, arias, and film soundtracks in 50 years. The most prolific and successful musician in history. Of the biggest sellers in music, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Queen are all impressive, with Queen in 2nd place at nearly 400 million units sold. The Beatles, have over 1 billion units sold. Nobody comes anywhere near their reign.
That's Billy Preston on keys.
For documentary of The Beatles, 1995's The Beatles Anthology TV series is the official one covers from the beginning to the end, even some 'afterlife'....
The official video is an edit that splices this version and the second version together. It doesn't have John's flub on the last verse.
This is the take where John forgets the lyrics, they do it again.
John Lennon would sometimes forget the lyrics and speak gobbledegook, as he did during this performance..notice Paul staring at John wondering where the lyrics were going to go, you can just about see the relief on McCartneys face when Lennon gets back on track.....
