Col de Dame Blanc Fig - A Large Fig With Incredible Texture

  • Col de Dame Blanc is a large fig with incredible texture. This fig has some of the thickest, densest pulp you will find in any fig. What's amazing about this fig is how large it is for its quality. Usually, high quality figs are not very large, and this is one of the rare figs where you can get incredible quality in a fig the size of a small mandarin. This is the first fig I've successfully ripened off my 4 month old tree, and I expect the quality to increase dramatically as the tree ages and matures.

      Hi M.G.! I can't believe I won a bid on a CDD-B that Dan had up on site. Was reading one of your posts that said you had an issue with ants & CDD-B. Mine will be in a pot, so any strategic advice you can give is welcome. I do have tanglefoot.

      @@shashakeeleh5468 oh that's good. Was it off Figbid? They had several up the other day. For ants, I suggest sprinkling coffee grounds AND diatomaceous earth in your pots. The coffee grounds mask the scent of the figs, which helps keep ants away, and the ones that do find them will crawl through the diatomaceous earth and get bound up and die. Also, look into covering your fruits with organza bags: ua-cam.com/video/QYdP95RztSA/v-deo.html

      @@TheMillennialGardener TY! Got all that and more. Hope it works. Yes, got it off figbid; the cheaper one didn't look like what I wanted. BTW, don't forget to put the portable vacuum in your store listing. I didn't check just now, so might already be there.

    Wow. Your figs look so good. I need to get myself a variety of figs also to try and grow. I just have Chicago Hardy, and they are delicious too. Mine finally started to swell and ripen a few weeks ago as u had mentioned in another video. I look forwarsd to coming hm from work every night to pick some.

      Thank you! In fairness, I film the ones I believe will be good. In my climate, I have an issue with splitting and souring due to the humidity. I have my fair share of stinkers. But you’re correct, when there is one you know is going to be good it is very exciting. I can’t wait to get some of these trees in the ground next year so the Earth regulates my watering issues. I think I will have less splitting in-ground.
      If you want more varieties, cutting season starts in a few weeks from Northeast growers. I can make some suggestions.

    That does look promising! Huge and decent quantity for a young tree! I’m so bummed right now as my two CDDB cuttings appear to be failing for some reason. I just recut and potted again with high hopes, but it’s not looking good. It seems like a very slow rooting variety compared to many others. If I remember, you had problems with this variety last year? Thanks again for producing these videos.

      Your memory is excellent. My CdDB cutting failed, so I bought a tree instead. I have heard it is a trickier variety to root. As luck would have it, my Col de Dame Rimada may have reverted, so now I may be stuck with two Col de Dame Blancs 😢 The irony! Thank you for watching.

    That looks very nice! I wish I had more room. My JH Adriatic seems to be producing the best for me this year. We are getting record-breaking temperatures today and Wednesday and then after that, it should be cooling off. Looks like we should finally get some rain next week as well

      It has been brutally hot and humid. We hit 96 over the weekend and smashed the record. If you don’t have more room for trees, you can buy cuttings and graft new varieties onto your wood to create unique branches. We call them “frankenfigs.” It is not unusual for an enthusiast to take a vigorous rootstock like Brown Turkey, chop it down into a goblet form, then have 4-5 different varieties growing off the main trunk. It is a great trick to create a single tree with many different branches.

      I have a few figs I will be culling this year and turning into rootstock. I may try to graft a few cuttings. I hear it is more reliable than rooting.

    Hello!
    Thank you for all your content! I’m interested in getting one myself and was wondering which variety of col de dame you think tastes the absolute best. Thank you.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  2 роки тому

      I am growing the following: Col de Dame Blanc, Col de Dame Noir, Col de Dame Gegantina, Col de Dame Rimada, Col de Dame Gris, and Coll de Dama diCiutat. Out of those 6, my favorite is Col de Dame Blanc. However, it is also the latest variety out of all of those in my experience, so keep that in mind. You need a pretty long, warm growing season to ripen a good crop of Blanc's.
