I remember my father bought a brand new 84 LTD off the showroom floor. I was blown away by how luxurious it was. I mean this was the first car I ever seen that had power everything. I was also concerned about its small size because I was used to the 74 Impala my father was driving prior to this. But that little 302 was raring to go.
I received this car as a gift on my sixteenth birthday. That was August of 1996. On September of 1996, my girlfriend's birthday, she wrecked it. It had just turned over 78000 miles. A few days after that, the entire Edelbrock catalog and B&M catalog that I had ordered arrived. After graduating from trade school in 1999, my mother gave me her old car, a 1985 Crown Victoria. This is where all the Edelbrock Parts got dumped. I sold the B&M parts at half of their retail value.
Needless to say, I blew the transmission right out of that 5800 lb Beast. Unable to Source a transmission on quick notice, combined with the fact that I needed an operational vehicle immediately I had to make a decision.
Unfortunately, I was responsible for paying for the third car. Which saw me taking home a 1991 Toyota Corolla.😢
So here we are in 2023, at the age of 42 years old, and my wife is screaming at me to get rid of the ancient engine I have sitting on the stand in my basement. Of course I Cherry Picked the motor out of that Crown Victoria and put it on a stand. It has been with me for almost 25 years now.
It appeared to decline in value the entire time I've had it. But recently, I have had people offer me gobs of money for this motor. Calling it a retro mod or some weird thing like that. Apparently old-school Motors modded with old-school parts is very popular today. As soon as people look under the valve covers and see roller rockers, they start throwing money at me. Old-Timers who are more knowledgeable notice the aluminum heads right away.
I recently had a young Tech Junkie ask me what was all that on top of the engine, in reference to the carburetor. This kid had no idea what I was talking about. And started asking me where the fuel injectors are because he thought the carburetor was just a throttle body.
Thanks for the flashback buddy. Good times. Now my wife is behind me reminding me yet again that we have to get rid of this engine.
