This is so spot on! Kind of reminds me of the movie Buried (which is personally one of my favorite movies), where Rodrigo Cortés mainly only uses one actor and one location to tell a very unique story

Yeah, all you need is talent like Claire Foy, Juno Temple, Amy Irving, etc (even Matt Damon shows up to say a couple of lines) and you´re ready to go. Having a professional sound equipment, camera stabilizing gear, professional cameramen, studio funding, distribuiton deals also help.
@ Sean Baker did it without any of that, no profesional actors of anything and his film (shot on a Iphone 5) got to make The Florida Project. Which was financially support by a studio
Zach Pope I agree, I thought that the surveillance-esque feeling actually made since the movie is about her getting stalked. The quality was a choice and after I got used to it, I actually found it enjoyable and unique in a refreshing way.
Esteban Medina I’m glad I wasnt the only one that’s what I was saying in my review I think it benefited the film and after 15 minutes I forgot it was an iPhone.
as long as filming techniques are only ever used to service the story than i am fine but the future of movies?haha that is a bold claim. I would not want to see lotr on a damn phone that is for sure.
also liked the up-close shots and thought it was a unique touch, like getting up-close and personal into her life, much like how the stalker did in the movie
It's interesting that Tangerine, shot on an iPhone 5, looked more cinematic than even the trailer shots for this film. I think Soderbergh is more interested in constructing films than possibly in the visual storytelling right now, which is fine, because I always like his work.
I just got finished watching Unsane - and I completely forgot this was filmed using an iPhone. I couldn't tell. Great performances by Claire Foi, and especially Jay Pharoah. Wow. Jay is so much more than SNL and stand-up. Great movie, but I hated the end. It felt unfinished. I wanted more closer. I wanted to see and hear people finally realize they were wrong.
this is exactly what i thought after i finished the moviee!! finally someone stated the ending and the story not only from the camerawork's perspective.. this movie was good but it could've been better expecially the ending
Charles Campbell shooting on modern film cameras still has a lot of benefits over shooting on digital. Movies like The Force Awakens, Dunkirk, and Interstellar are all shot on film and look amazing.
Charles Campbell It's a technology of the past but that doesn't mean it looks worse than digital or has no place in film. Shooting on film is the equivalent of listening to music on vinyl with a great sound system in terms of quality, depth and feel. It trumps everything else when used correctly and within its own limitations. I hope to never see film go personally.
G. S. I’m sorry, but with the resurgence of DP’s going back to shooting on film, I’d say it’s definitely closer to 50/50 than “overwhelming majority” either way. You might not be able to notice it, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t being shot on film.
As a worker in mental health, I've seen hundreds of patients like the main character lose that good head on their shoulders. Being a sane person in an insane environment push people HARD.
I actually think that this choice to work with an iphone works, for the most part because it generates a sense of hyper-awareness and unsettling feeling when everything is in focus. While it doesn't look entirely cinematic, it has elements that further engages the debate about how films can be made. Tangerine did it, but what's more surprising about Unsane is that this is a wide release, not a limited release film that happens to have been recorded on an iphone. There is a sequence toward the end that could have been worked better without the artificial color grading, the acting and how Soderbergh chooses to unfold this film is what I feel should weigh more than the technical aspects. However, it is not ground breaking cinematic writing; it actually has some scenes that have cringe-worthy dialogue so wooden that it takes you out of the film for example the scene with the two orderlies talking about how that one person thanks heaven he works there. Other than little things like that, it is pretty solid considering with what he made this film with. It gives me hope that I can make a film, or rather a short film just using my phone. I think that he's trying to challenge himself as a filmmaker, but I feel he might have had better luck with a mirrorless camera or DSLR that shoots in 4k rather than a fully automated consumer phone. Anyways, I had just came out of the theater having watched Unsane for the first time, and these are just a few things that came off the top of my head. Also, this movie only further cemented my fear about mental institutions. In addition to Claire Foy's work, Jay Pharaoh was another highlight of this film. What this film doesn't do well is remove the stigma of mental illness in cinema. Kudos for his seemingly ambitious minimalistic filmmaking. Hopefully, cellphones reach a point where they can really go toe to toe with actual cinema cameras.
"It" was a weird one for me. Elements of it were definitely scary- they really did a good job utilizing the pipes. And I love the actor who played Pennywise. But the best ones as of late, for me, were "The Witch" and "It Follows". But mostly "The Witch" haha it's just such an underrated film. "Hereditary" has the same director and even watching the trailer I could see the similar patterns. So I'm really, really excited for this. Also- "Split" was incredible even though it's more of a psychological horror. I absolutely loved that movie- and amazingly the main girl in "The Witch" and "Split" are the same person. So yeah. I am a nerd lmao.
Kaitlyn R The Witch was directed by Robert Eggers. Hereditary is being directed by Ari Aster, The dude who created the amazing short film There's Something Strange About The Johnson's... you can watch it on UA-cam...
I knew it wasn't just me, the camera angles, lighting, & shading made me feel like there was a wrongness to the film. That was a good effect that put me on edge right away!
"I did this all with an Apple product. No one will notice." -- Someone endorsing a product for money without having to go through product placement legality and, because of the challenge statement, it doesn't hurt the chances that people will go see his movie. If I wanted to challenge people into not noticing I would have revealed it months later, not pre-release. People will absolutely notice when you tell them they won't.
The look from the cell phone has some merit, although not what the director intended. Movies like the first Blair Witch and 28 Days Later (one of my favorite horror films after John Carpenter's The Thing) IMO benefited from a cheaper and dirty look. Kinda feels more real too me in a way. Idk about this films look though.
This is such a good review, Chris made an interesting point that how the decision to use an iPhone did not even intend to improve the movie. But thinking about, it a lot of films nowadays make big decisions based on the directors agenda with little regard for the quality of the movie or plot (eg Star Wars)
I thought he shot it with those cameras to create a sense of uneasiness and creepiness and make Sawyer feel like she’s being watched according to her past.
I went into a press screening not knowing the iphone-thing and I couldn't tell. Yes , the look felt different and intentionally cheapend , but I wouldnt have guessed... When I found out , I was very enthusiastic about it and thought: Man , this is a great message to young filmmakers. Soderbergh says: "You can do it too if you have a good story (which this movie had in my opinion). The barriers to filmmaking are shrinking." I am actually a little suprised that Chris is not more hyped by this , as he regularly points out his past in and approach to filmmaking. His analysis felt a little headstrong... Soderbergh is a filmmaker that I really appreciate for his commitment to try something new , the courage to fail a little for the sake of doing his thing and moving stuff forward.
Wouldn't you freak out and get violent if this happened to you? What an infuriating situation, her lashing out at these people who weren't making her stay any easier made sense to me. As for the camera work, I don't know if I could articulate everything about it that made it work for me, but I can't think of any other movie I've seen that looks like this and I thought that was really cool. Gritty (while also looking clean somehow) and memorable I guess is how I'd describe how this movie looks
I watched this and I loved it. I'd no idea that it was shot on an IPhone. I thought the angels added a sense of unease and a throwback to older people films in a good way . Terrific acting and story that had me on the edge of my seat throughout.
FINAL EXPLANATION: It's clearly all in her head. 1. Analize the part where she punches a staff member. Before the punch it's clearly ˝David˝, her stalker. Afterwards it's clear it's just some guy, not David. 2. Look at the scene where she's locked up in solitary. How did she know her friend got ˝murdered˝ by an alleged overdose if she's locked up?
She got a message on the phone saying "open me" from Nate's phone. It had a picture of Nate tied up and beaten. She knew that David killed him, since David put the phone back under her pillow for her to see the message.
I think the fact that more mainstream movies are utilizing smaller, cheaper cameras is inspirational even if it doesn't benefit the story telling as a whole. I am sure a movie shot on an Osmo is not far away. In the end a good story and acting will always trump the medium it is shot on. This is cool in a Casey Nestate kind of way.
Michael Cepeda No one is ignoring it. Only that Steven Soderbergh is a higher profile director, so it makes sense that someone like him will garner more attention for doing something like that.
You've gotta watch 'The Crown'. She's AMAZING in it. It's one big showcase of how incredibly talented she is. And it is one fantastic piece of television... Also would make a great review :)
I know a lot of people(including myself) noticed that, especially these last few weeks/months like you said. It made me think of one thing (and maybe it's far fetched) and I looked : Watch his hands...do you see something missing? His ring. I looked back at his videos from October (his Halloween specials) and he still had it on. I hope I'm really wrong on this but maybe they separated/divorced and that would take a toll on someone..
When I watched this movie it made me feel like I was viewing a good student film. The camera was always on a stand and each scene looked like the phone had been placed on a table with characters have to work around it. Often entire monologues would play through with the camera completely still, focusing on a person who wasn’t even talking. It was incredibly uncomfortable to look at. That being said, near the end the film really took off, providing one of the best scenes I’ve seen in a long time- with the three characters in isolation. The camera work for that scene was amazing- given the situation. It was certainly a fascinating movie and I never found myself to be bored, more so agitated.
I agree, she did such an amazing job! And the music made it so creepy later on I loved it! The iPhone thing is very interesting, it added to the grittiness
Great movie, great review, Chris! I loved the use of the iPhone camera, it gave me a sense of just uneasiness as we almost 'stalk' Claire through the narrative. When filmmaking and plot go hand in hand like that is just really nice.
This film was surprisingly accurate regarding the mental health/psych ward, except for the part where they keep both males and females in one room, with the door locked and no staff inside. Where I’m from, this is unheard of. I wonder if it does happen that way in some places though. Usually genders are separated as far as sleeping areas go, they can mingle in the halls and the recreation area as well as the cafeteria only, and there are no closed doors on rooms unless the patient is a major danger and kept to a padded room. Plus there are different floors sometimes, some for less dangerous individuals. And staff is checking everyone every 5-15 minutes. You can’t take a shower without them knocking your door down after 5 minutes. The insurance thing and “voluntary involuntary” commitment is rampant. It is everywhere. People who need to be there get kicked out because their insurance doesn’t pay. People who don’t need to be there are made to stay until the insurance gets sucked dry. The meds are not dispensed in a very promising way. Just a load of pills dumped on and off you, you go into withdrawal and they’ll tell you that’s impossible. They cold turkey you off psych meds. The scariest part is the people who get taken down to get ECT and come back upstairs like zombies. Scariest shit one of them told me once, I asked if they were voluntarily having ECT, I asked “you actually go down there willingly?” And they said “Not the first time.” WTF. Apparently the guy who runs the ECT department gets paid for every poor soul that he gets to run a shock through their brain. It reminds me of judges being paid for helping to fill out certain prisons. You’ll find a couple good eggs on staff, but most will not treat you like you are human. You no longer have rights when you get walked through that door. No longer do you have autonomy of privacy. You get strip searched like you are going to jail. The contents of your bag and purse are dumped and confiscated. You will definitely be missing a couple things when you leave and they will probably be whatever was valuable. Like jewelry. The best part is, once you go on in there, anyone who knows about it will always consider you a crazy person, or it will always be at the back of their minds, there is now a factor of your life for people to explain away and control you with. You’re mentally ill. You were committed. You don’t know what you’re doing. You don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re not fit to make decisions for yourself. They take your control away when you enter these places, and they never really give it back.
Am I the only one who noticed how monotone Chris has been in his reviews for the last couple of months he doesn't sound expressional in his movie reviews anymore
Nope. You're not the only one. Chris is reading a script and he is speaking in a monotone. Now maybe that's because he sees a LOT of movies, but it's beginning to sound like this is his job instead of something he clearly enjoys doing.
Jeff Winbush well I really hope Chris is not like this in the rest of his movie reviews unless somethings going on then I would like to know why? But then again I kind want more expression in his reviews, just saying
While I appreciate the ingenuity of using an iPhone to shoot 120+ minutes of footage, I don't think that's the future of filmmaking when DLSRs, Arri Alexas, CineAltas these HIIIIIGH END brands are still around and can get the job done a bit better. Not to mention drone shots, steadycam, if you want to shoot raw, and storage space....It's just not practical for CINEMATIC films. Short films sure I can see it being used all the time for those.
it only applies to peasants who can't afford to pay thousands dollars rent of shooting each day with an expensive Hollyweird camera. although i don't know why Soderbergh would want to let peasants in. cinema was better when it was limited of directors. if the world ban every other director except for 7 exceptional directors who can conquer any genre, then the world would be filled with great movies.
lol I'd agree with this, but....a good DSLR is only about 500 bucks sooooooo. There that is. The 70D which has slowmo is only about 800 bucks. Worth the save up and you'll really never need another DSLR unless you're a junky haha
well there are different versions of iphones. doesn't have to be exclusive to the iphone x. the previous older models like 5s and 6s are cheaper than DSLR now.
Truuuuuue I'm not sure I'd film on the iPhone X when older models LIKE the 7plus would get the job done fine....I wonder if any film has been done on Android....I'm sure there has and if not....Well first for everything I guess. I would be willing to bet that the Note 8 or S9 would be best to get the job done spec wise. Wonder what the Google Pixel 2 xl could do for filmming....If you push any technology you could get the results you want.
Hey Chris, Soderbergh did the same thing in the past using SD digital video to make Full Frontal. Definitely seems like he enjoys the freedom of less complicated equipment.
hello chris my name is thomas am from glasgow i love your show you remind me of barry norman is the guy used to talk about films if they were good or bad keep your shows going you make me smile mate
This movie was great! I loved the camera work made it feel like she was stalked the entire film it was an excellent artistic choice. Really enjoyed this film and I was just going as an after thought to pass some time.
I'm grateful for this film in that now I know you can make an entire fairly decent looking movie with an iPhone. It's encouraging for a no-budget rookie like me. I thought this picture looked a bit TV-ish from the trailers, but I can live with that as a no-budget rookie. Thanks, Chris!
Anyone else guess the grade like halfway through his videos, the more you watch the more you know his scale. I seem to be within a +/- most times. Thanks Chris, love the channel!
I think the cinematography or the Iphone shoot brings a sense of intensity and focus to the movie which kind of helps you concentrate on the characters. I agree Claire Foy's performance is really stand out. Very well acted. You feel her paranoia and her pain. And understand her ambitious part as well. I mean the way she is presented right from her styling which includes the clothes she wears to her hairstyle is just very well done. She just nails that character. But credit must also given to the support cast especially the bad guy who does really well in his role. But I think the use of Iphone was really smart as it avoided any distractions and helped the audience focus on the narrative.
A 97 minute iphone ad. You can get A used sony A7 with some beautiful vintage lenses for less than 1000$, just as much as an iphone 7 cost byt with much better video result
Archontasius I get better results with my canon t3i and a knockoff 50mm f/1.8. But we have to think that most filmmakers will have a smartphone with a decent camera on them, so the idea that you can film such a movie on that is exciting, as you only need maybe $100 (and that's overshooting in my opinion)for the manual exposure video app and the smartphone lenses. This way you can dedicate the other $900 to, let's say, better sound or lighting or nicer props. Think of it that way.
James Lewis yea, and it's fun as well to play around with your phone. I kinda agree if it's for youtube/vimeo stuffs, but for big screen? Nah. 1000$ is nothing anyway compared to the whole budget of this movie. And the lens extensions that this movie used is actually quite expensive
Archontasius Well, it depends. While I disagree with using it for big screen films with wide distribution, I also believe that we shouldn't discount the idea of smartphone cinematography. For budget projects, this can be a revolution (granted, I'd never do it myself, but I can easily see some of my friends do it for their low budget projects). I mean, if it weren't for the fact that I love bokeh (it's too good) and am a photographer as well, even I would consider it. But it all depends on one's needs.
I gave it a solid B. Claire Foye’s Performace was brilliant and she really carried this movie. So much so that you kinda forget its shot by an IPhone 7. Although quality is noticeably lower than an actual top notch movie. The way he shot/captured the movie kind of makes you feel like you are going through what she is going through with her in real time. Like one of this National Geographic docs about prison. I would recommend it as well.
When the directors said I don’t think the audience will notice, I don’t think he meant people like you, Chris. You will catch onto these kinds of things because you’re not only a film critic with your filmmaker. But the average Joe who goes and sits and watches this movie ? He/she won’t notice. I watched this movie with my wife, and after it was over I asked her what she thought. She said it was OK. I asked her if she noticed anything different and she said like what? I asked her if how the movie was filmed look different or anything like that. She said no not really. So when I told her it was shot on an iPhone 7 Plus and how it was edited she was just flabbergasted she was like wow that looks really good I can’t believe they can do that. Anyway, I’m just saying I don’t think the average person will notice because the average person really doesn’t know how movies are made from beginning to end. Love your work love your criticisms love your pics keep it up your fan Ken
I couldn't disagree more Chris. I thought this movie was absolutely atrocious. From the writing to the acting (minus the orderly and a certain cameo) everyone was horrible. Especially Claire. For one, she can not do an American accent to save her life, and two everything she said just didn't feel genuine at all. It just felt like she was reading from a page and I felt nothing for her the entire time. I will say though at one point while watching this me and my girlfriend said "why is the aspect ratio like this? Why does it look like a student film shot on an iPhone?" So to come and find out that it was is no surprise to me at all. I knew nothing about this movie, hadn't seen a trailer, and was even still never surprised. Plus idk how you didn't mention the end shot. Which is quite possibly the worst ending to a film I've seen in years. Absolutely pointless and looks like garbage. And the score. My god. So bad. I really like him as a director too. Contagion, side effects, the informant. These are all movies with a style and characters I enjoy watching. This however just felt like a student film made by a freshman. To me it was a poorly made predictable pointless film that had no business being in the theaters. But hey, that's just one man's opinion.
Also it's not too hard to believe this script was written by the lovely people who brought you Larry The Cable Guy: Health Inspector and The Spy Next Door. Quality.
I was pretty certain throughout the movie that it was filmed on something designed to make the movie look older and more personal because of the lighting and the editing choices and also just the general look of the film, especially with that fucking hilarious freeze frame ending. I loved the style of this movie, it was so cool, and it ASTOUNDS me but also makes sense that it was filmed on an iPhone 7+. Such a cool movie. The Invisible Man done way way way better than The Invisible Man.
The overblown highlights and boxy aspect ratio you mentioned as being drawbacks of the film being shot on an iPhone are 100% directorial, aesthetic choices. If he'd wanted the standard cinematic widescreen look he'd have shot with one of the many smartphone anamorphic lenses on the market. He chose a more cramped aspect ratio to add to the feel of the film. He'd probably have done that if shooting on a high end cinema camera. The blown out highlights could absolutely be controlled if he'd wanted to. I guess he thought they added to the slightly uncomfortable aesthetic of the film. Didn't like them myself, but I guess that's what he was after. As for the shots lacking depth.... Yeah. That's the iPhone's fault for sure. A sensor the size of a toe nail clipping isn't going to be able to give you much depth to your images. That one is unavoidable, unfortunately.
+Crono Sapien it’s okay to have an “opinion”. But when you literally have thousands of people viewing your shit and taking what you say into account, it’s best not to have a stupid one.
I’m inclined to agree with Soderbergh. Sure, with big blockbusters, there might be shots you can’t achieve. But color grading is a breeze in Filmic Pro, and the new Anamorphic Lens by Moment makes true cinematic video on an iPhone (or Pixel, or S9) possible. And Soderbergh has always been experimental, so this isn’t that crazy for him.
Can you do an analysis of the last Jedi? Would really love to see a really in depth review from you as well as responding the criticism and praise the movie gets
I have full respect for the director for taking such risk. I don't care if it paid off I want to support this purely in innovation. Something the industry needs more of these days.
Albeit the film borderlines on gimmicky because of the iPhone... Actually, it's a conversation piece sure why not. Plus it looks good and can inspire someone with a good camera to do one themselves. Did Apple give him something for it? That's where my mind goes unfortunately. I won't judge.
I don't think he was trying to say that all movies will be filmed with cell phones in the future.

Critics can bash on the fact he used a cellphone all day. But that doesn't change the fact that he inspired those less fortunate to go for their dreams, not only that but to take away the ability to say "I don't have good enough equipment" "I'll never be able to afford a thirty thousand dollar camera"

Totally agree. Well said.

I felt the iPhone helped this film with the way the film was being told I really enjoyed this film surprisingly

Tangerine wasn't very cinematic, it worked more like a grungy documentary style look into trashy streets of LA.
Tangerine had custom made anamorphic lenses made for it though, so it inevitably looks better and more cinematic.
Luke Ormsby It wasn’t costum made, it’s made by Moondog Labs and you can buy one right now on their site (I’ve got one)
It looks the same but anamorphic
Tangerine was fabulous, one of my favourite films.

Wasn't it shot on film? That is a thing of the past, most movies aren't shot on film anymore.

But dam I gotta admit for being shot on an iPhone it looks pretty good

April 13th is the official nationwide expansion date at this time.
I'm more excited for Hereditary :D I really hope that movie turns out good because The Witch is my favorite horror film.

That's weird because I swore I saw they're being directed by the same person. Maybe it's the producer whoops lol
i absolutely hated The Witch, but each to their own.
Do a hilariocity review , it's been a long time
No
Troll 2!!
No, he needs to review a horrid trilogy I found on amazon prime called bad ben.
Lets hope its not for deadpool2
Agree
Hey Chris can you review "The Ritual" on Netflix?
Great film I can't believe it's only Netflix in the States I watched at the cinema where it should be watched.
I thought it was pretty damn awesome!
The ending was pretty bad
Vanessa Z I will give you that for sure! Haha
Yes please review the ritual. I feel as if it is a monster movie done fantastically!
I knew it wasn't just me, the camera angles, lighting, & shading made me feel like there was a wrongness to the film. That was a good effect that put me on edge right away!
I'm the only one hearing like a banging in the mic and a humming noise or something?
nope
"I did this all with an Apple product. No one will notice." -- Someone endorsing a product for money without having to go through product placement legality and, because of the challenge statement, it doesn't hurt the chances that people will go see his movie. If I wanted to challenge people into not noticing I would have revealed it months later, not pre-release. People will absolutely notice when you tell them they won't.
China buying out Hollywoood. Apple moved to China. Maybe seeing the "China Connection?"
Yup, I don't know if I had realised otherwise, but now I can't unsane... I mean unsee it :p
Please review Rashomon in the near future, in my humble opinion it's more intriguing than Seven Samurai. Please 🙏🙏
Dude Rashomon is incredible.. I prefer it to seven samurai personally as well
You should review Psycho for your older film reviews
Sotoberg stated "most audio members won't noticed, and this is the future of movies." Yeah I think I can agree to that.
claire foy is a terrific actress, though i think she could have been in much better roles
Chris is UNSANE
Nice profile picture. Furry
Is anybody looking forward to a quiet place next month
Jackson The ghost i am !
Hell yes!
I hope that it won't get shaft to Netflix like Annihilation.
Yes! The movie I was looking for the most this year.
Yeah life is noisy I could use one this month.
I've seen this yesterday. officially my favorite Soderbergh Film. such a beautiful film
Yeah, those films really did esp. The BlairWitch Project. I really liked the look in 28 Days Later, wished they kept that for 28 Weeks Later.
Is it just me or do you hear something that sounds like a heartbeat every once in a while
Odd that more people aren't mentioning this, seems like Chris is trying to subtly make us uneasy.
He probably uses it as a reference for syncing his audio. Or at least that's my guess!
yeah, i was wondering what that was.
I want to see the behind scene of the movie
I went into a press screening not knowing the iphone-thing and I couldn't tell. Yes , the look felt different and intentionally cheapend , but I wouldnt have guessed... When I found out , I was very enthusiastic about it and thought: Man , this is a great message to young filmmakers. Soderbergh says: "You can do it too if you have a good story (which this movie had in my opinion). The barriers to filmmaking are shrinking."
I am actually a little suprised that Chris is not more hyped by this , as he regularly points out his past in and approach to filmmaking.
She knew that David killed him, since David put the phone back under her pillow for her to see the message.
lmaooo. if you actually paid attention, you wouldnt be asking that.
who killed her mother then?
I love Claire Foy (especially in the Crown, so bad ass)
What's with the creepy knocking/ heartbeat in the background? Is it something present in the film?
I think the fact that more mainstream movies are utilizing smaller, cheaper cameras is inspirational even if it doesn't benefit the story telling as a whole. I am sure a movie shot on an Osmo is not far away. In the end a good story and acting will always trump the medium it is shot on. This is cool in a Casey Nestate kind of way.
Is everyone just gonna ignore that Tangerine did the whole "Shot on the iPhone" gimmick before this, and 21x better?
Michael Cepeda No one is ignoring it. Only that Steven Soderbergh is a higher profile director, so it makes sense that someone like him will garner more attention for doing something like that.
We Are Champions! And because it’s a movie that’s actually well made and shot. Nothing wrong with lqbtq representation in films.
Whirrlinq Music because it’s interesting and refreshing?
FireproofLine
Lol
Whirrlinq Music because not everyone is close minded like you
This movie deserves at least an A. This movie feels so real.
Chris grew up being unsane
You've gotta watch 'The Crown'. She's AMAZING in it. It's one big showcase of how incredibly talented she is. And it is one fantastic piece of television... Also would make a great review :)
Chris do a review of one of Jeremy Jahns review for april 1st
I loved Claire Foy's performance. You could see how the stress of the situation degraded her judgement.
Chris bro what happened? You seem so down the past couple of weeks/months.
I just finished this movie. It was very sinister and well played out. I was so mad about the fact they wouldn't listen to her. I give it a 8.7/10
Compliance is much better than this. Based on a true story
I want a Hilariocity of the Paul Blart movies
I love this movie! Favorite movie of 2018 so far
I agree, she did such an amazing job! And the music made it so creepy later on I loved it! The iPhone thing is very interesting, it added to the grittiness
Oooooyaooo
Chris, if you haven't seen Soderberghs show The Knick you need to check it out.
Louis Alcantar Season 1 of "The Knick" completely blew me away.
MrSquifler ... He's directed every episode...
MrSquifler I was talking about The Knick, which was the initial comment
MrSquifler he directed every episode of both seasons and acted as his own cinematographer
Scariest shit one of them told me once, I asked if they were voluntarily having ECT, I asked “you actually go down there willingly?”
And they said
“Not the first time.”
WTF.
Appreciating the wide variety of your facial expressions in your thumbnails.
THAT'S NOT A WOOOORD CHRIS!
Just got home after a long College term, brightened up my day❤️
Am I the only one who noticed how monotone Chris has been in his reviews for the last couple of months he doesn't sound expressional in his movie reviews anymore
Nope. You're not the only one. Chris is reading a script and he is speaking in a monotone. Now maybe that's because he sees a LOT of movies, but it's beginning to sound like this is his job instead of something he clearly enjoys doing.
he could be tired, maybe he's been filming these pretty late.
Jeff Winbush well I really hope Chris is not like this in the rest of his movie reviews unless somethings going on then I would like to know why? But then again I kind want more expression in his reviews, just saying
I loved this movie.flawless in my opinion.the lead character and antagonist were excellent, the story was fantastic.Jay pharoah was surprising good.A+
I love the look of the movie 🤷♂️
Same
Just when I thought I couldn't be more of a fan, you reference Argento. Would love to see you review Tenebrae come Halloween time
While I appreciate the ingenuity of using an iPhone to shoot 120+ minutes of footage, I don't think that's the future of filmmaking when DLSRs, Arri Alexas, CineAltas these HIIIIIGH END brands are still around and can get the job done a bit better.
Wonder what the Google Pixel 2 xl could do for filmming....If you push any technology you could get the results you want.
your right any one who knows anything about film will notice but the common movie going audience probably won't
Do Ready Player One Review already !!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Chris, Soderbergh did the same thing in the past using SD digital video to make Full Frontal. Definitely seems like he enjoys the freedom of less complicated equipment.
Just me or a Chris lost some of his personality recently? Sounds like he's reading straight from an autocue now
Zach Gerrity meh. everyone gets burned out sometimes. he probably just needs a week off
He hit a million followers so he's gonna stay with what works
I see he's not wearing a wedding ring
He also seems a bit tired, maybe this was taped pretty late.
I've noticed that too he's doesn't sound that passionate in his reviews anymore, wonder what's going on?
hello chris my name is thomas am from glasgow i love your show you remind me of barry norman is the guy used to talk about films if they were good or bad keep your shows going you make me smile mate
This movie was great! I loved the camera work made it feel like she was stalked the entire film it was an excellent artistic choice. Really enjoyed this film and I was just going as an after thought to pass some time.
Literally the words out of my mouth. I'm glad I'm not alone on this
I'm grateful for this film in that now I know you can make an entire fairly decent looking movie with an iPhone. It's encouraging for a no-budget rookie like me. I thought this picture looked a bit TV-ish from the trailers, but I can live with that as a no-budget rookie. Thanks, Chris!
What the hell is this? I want a review of Isle of Dogs
Anyone else guess the grade like halfway through his videos, the more you watch the more you know his scale. I seem to be within a +/- most times. Thanks Chris, love the channel!
Have you seen killing of a sacred deer? The best movie ever!!!!
one of the weirdest films I've ever seen, but a good one all the same
the wrost movie ever but jennifer and katie over here probably single mom like playing roulette and killing there child for them its business you know
I think the cinematography or the Iphone shoot brings a sense of intensity and focus to the movie which kind of helps you concentrate on the characters.
Agreed. I guess Apple covered a part of the production budget
I would recommend it as well.
this movie was supposed to be a slam dunk...it was trash
Soderberg made a 2 season 10 episode show called the Knick. The exact opposote of this as far as the visuals, acting, editing, sets and all that jazz
this film was shot on an iphone
Dankest Media Group say it again for the people in the back
It took twelve years to make.
I want every Director to make at least one movie on their phone a year. The results would be pretty interesting.
Imagine a Brian Taylor movie, or a Michael Bay movie shot on an iPhone.
Hmm 🤔
Zack Snyder's Justice League 2 on iPhone
Nolan T hmmmmmmm 🤔🤔👏
Thanks Chris for everything you do! I love watching some that has my passion for movies!!!
He could have at least bothered to use an iphone 10
The X and 8 weren't released at the time of filming
Sabah don’t you use your brain often?
Love the shirt Chris, although I'm pretty skeptical of the upcoming film..
steven soderbergh shot an entire movie with the same device that I am watching this review
What a time to be alive
Hey, Chris, could you possibly do a video on some David Lynch films? I recently discovered Mulholland Drive, and I can't get it out of my head.
Can't wait to see this. I'll love it if it's half as good as Side Effects!
have you watched THE KNICK?
zozobra I have not! I love Clive Owen though...
its a shame that it got cancelled after 2 seasons. give it a watch if you can. i guarantee it'll be worth it.
zozobra he's am underrated director I feel. I'll give it a watch for sure, thanks!
Youre reviews have been a bit off these past few years.i went to watch laracroft which you gave a b and it was absolute garbage
His review isn't off. You do realize everyone is entitled to their opinion right?
christo james I think it’s called an opinion, m8.
Haven't you noticed how monotone Chris is in his movie reviews now even I can't back up what he's saying and I really like to know why?
christo james should probably start watching other reviewers mate.
And Soderbergh has always been experimental, so this isn’t that crazy for him.
infinity war get A+ or riot..
Even if it’s horrible?
Can you do an analysis of the last Jedi? Would really love to see a really in depth review from you as well as responding the criticism and praise the movie gets
Chris please review your hot wife
K K chill out
He will give her an A-
D+
FINALLY A STEVEN SODERBURG MOVIE, I AM HYPED!
*SEES THE REVIEW*
Another great upload once again. And appreciate the Argento mention being a fan, and your ok too I guess. Sorry early April fools lol.
Hey Chris what happened to your classic movie reviews?
hey Chris Stuckmann, have you ever reviewed No Country For Old Men? i would love to hear your thought on that movie!
hello.. hv u hv a full movie of unsane wthout sign up to any website??????
pls respond to me
When are you going to start reviewing Halloween 3-8 leading up to the new film this October as stated in your previous Halloween movie reviews?
I have full respect for the director for taking such risk. I don't care if it paid off I want to support this purely in innovation. Something the industry needs more of these days.
Albeit the film borderlines on gimmicky because of the iPhone... Actually, it's a conversation piece sure why not. Plus it looks good and can inspire someone with a good camera to do one themselves.
Did Apple give him something for it? That's where my mind goes unfortunately. I won't judge.
Tenebre is called Unsane in the US? Anyway, it sounds interesting.
