    Bought one, and it worked great on my goldwing. So here's the deal. Tying the bike to the roof rack is fighting geometry, and limiting what the bike really wants to do when you make turns. The tie downs should be a part of the tow dolly. But here's the big deal. The dolly needs to pivot, so bike won't lean. The tie downs are behind the pivot point, and are swept back 45 degrees so not to interfere with turning. You are so good at welding, you could alter what you've got, and make something you will be very comfortable with. Better yet, buy mine cuz I sold my goldwing. I always thought this tow thing I have would be fantastic for towing a trike. Oh, one limitation. Not behind a motorhome. The swing can take the bike to nearly 90 degrees. I now have a smaller electric bike that I put on a rail behind the motorhome. Fastest thing on the street. Faster than a single motor Tesla. Haven't raced a duel yet.

    You need to put the bike in with rear wheel setting in your cradle. Stop the wear from dry running the bearings inside tranny.

      It won't function like that. The head tube angle will cause the triple tree to flop to one side or the other. Assuming you can lock it straight which you probably can't, it would slide the front tires sideways around every corner.
      Most manual transmissions don't use pumps to pump lubricant through the Trans. If your bike has an auto Trans you're probably not the type to tow it yourself anyway.

    Nice design, solves your problem well. Most trailers like this are for when you need to pick up a bike that is broken down. Tow trucks really mess up your bike if they don’t send a flat bed to pick you up. This works great for most stuff except for a back flat tire. I recommend a clip on dolly for the back tire. A bar, plate and two wheels would easily do it and could be clipped on with a cotter pin when needed and left home if not needed. A fold up bar for tying off the handle bars and get the straps off the roof rack. I bet this fits in your trunk with no fuss and would be a big help picking up a broken down bike. Most trailer ordnance’s focous on carrying the whole bike, I would search out trailers that fit in your trunk or break down to see how they handled the legal side of this kind of thing. Nice stuff.

    Hi, my friend and i built one kinda like that, didnt go up and down, just a rocking chair for the front wheel. and side arms. we tied the front wheel onto the dolly, front wheel rocking basket thing and the outside edges of brars/grips to outside edge of rocking basket/chair sidearms . Like a big + . Tying Bars to dolly sidearms allows for easy towing and backup as well, and makes is easier when in a tight sitch ya gotta pull it over/move the bike to a side just because...

    Nice setup, should swap the hook on the winch to a latching hook, or carabiner to keep it from swinging in the breeze. Crossbar and handlebar ties would be a bit more professional looking than tieing off to a roofrack. You might consider load testing just as a proof of concept, not sure what level to test to. In overhead lifting equipment design usually design for a 3:1 to yield of the materials. If you anticipate hauling a cruiser ~800LB total weight, ~400LB front end, apply a 1200LB static load and see if it flexes, though there might be a limit on the car receiver... Nice video btw!

    I think you have a great idea going here and I understand why you're concerned about the front end pivoting while going down the street. I think one of two things needs to be done to eliminate your problem. Either the hitch itself has to pivote like a trailer or you could put the bike on backwards. I believe if you put your bike on front wards, like you have it, and tie it down securely, you might reck the front end of the bike. Put it on backwards and tie it down securely, the front of the bike will handle the steering just fine.

    A toe dolly for cars has a piviot bolt in the middle to keep the piviot perpendicular to the road. If you locked your bikes steering, and put a piviot between your wheel clamp and your bumper insert that is perpendicular to the ground it wouldn't lay down like it does using the gooseneck of the bike as a piviot. The bikes front axel still would act as your up and down piviot for humps and dips.

  • @nathanlewis1173
    @nathanlewis1173 4 роки тому +4

    it needs a crossbar running perpendicular to the front wheel that you can tie the handlebars down to similar to how its tied to the car. the problem with tying them to the car is that when you go up or down a hill it will tighten or loosen the straps. if you use a crossbar down at the level of the front wheel you can use the straps to compress the suspension so that even on a hill the stabilizer straps will still stay tight enough to keep the bike upright.
    ive got one of these and have used it for years and never had a problem

    It is a tow dolly. Like a car dolly one set of wheels is off the road. The vehicle on the dolly has to be licensed and registered. I use one quite a bit in Arizona with my WR250R. No sharp 90 degree parking lot turns. Because of the rake angle on the front fork makes the bike lean way over in sharp turns. It can even fall over. Always remove the chain when towing over several miles. I looped wire around both sides of the car frame just in front of the rear bumper for lower tie down points. The sell them on the big box internet web store for around a hundred bucks.

    In the 196o,s I towed my 305 super hawk at highway speeds wherever I went with a bracket that hooked to the bumper of my 65 Meteor. The bike tire dropped into a quarter moon channel welded to the bracket much the same idea as you used. At that time I used a couple of ratchet straps which pulled the front bike suspension down about half way and secured to the outside corners of the bumper and the handle bars. When not in use the bracket unhooked and stored in the trunk. Then I got married and that was the end of that.

    I think the problem is that there needs to be a universal joint between the car and the wheel on the ground behind. Imagine that you welded a 6 ft long bar to the car with a wheel at the end. It's going to skid around every corner. So your bike must lean. If the steering head tube was vertical in the towing position you could probably get this dolly to work.
    As for legal, it'a amazing how uninformed patrol offices are on "the Law". I'd say your right to be "sketched out" (never heard the term before) about towing. You would be a ticket magnet regardless if it was legal :)
    Personally I picked up an air ride MC trailer, WOW wish I'd done that years ago. No more fumbling with ramps and a smooth ride for the bike. Not cheap but really nice if you can afford it.
    Thanks for the video, nice fabrication work!

      I would much prefer a trailer as it could be functional for numerous other tasks in addition to being a less stressful means of bike towing. I love the idea of making a trailer from junkyard car parts - but I have no where to store a trailer - sad😞.
      Perhaps someday 😀. Love the air ride idea 👌. Does your trailer have bags that you fill directly, or does it have it's own compressor?

    • @edwardj456
      @edwardj456 4 роки тому +1

      @@HooptieDoodle My air ride has a Firestone airbags and a Firestone pump that is powered from the car on a 5 pin trailer connection. It uses a micro switch to keep ride height. Then to load/unload, disconnect the trailer connection and open the air purge valve. The deck then drops to about 1-2inch off the pavement. If needed crank up the front trailer support wheel to make the deck lay on the ground.
      You could steal the Harbor Freight folding trailer idea. I have one of those also. It's just bolted together and has a hinge point in the middle. There are a couple caster wheels mounted at the hinge point. Also the A-frame towing part folds down. So the whole package is about 4.25ft high, 5ft wide and maybe 2ft deep when folded. I've used the fold once or twice but I have the room so it's just fixed with side board for hauling compost/dirt etc..But it dd haul my R100RT for a coupe years before I bought the Air ride.
      A interesting experiment with you dolly would be to put the bike's rear wheel on the dolly. That way the steering head tube/stem would be pretty close to vertical. Put some wings on the dolly to strap the bike side to side. I suppose the big question would be could the forks handle the reverse forces??

    Great job on your dolly build and also on your research. You most definitely have skills! I am leery of these motorcycle dolly transports for all the reasons you mentioned and also wear on the tire, bearings, etc. Sketchy is a good word to use to describe the setup. I have heard many people discuss the leaning from side to side of the bike. I would hate to ever be responsible for unleashing a 600-lb motorcycle at 60 or 70 miles an hour. I use the U-Haul motorcycle trailer. It is so inexpensive at $15 a day that I also buy the $15 maximum insurance coverage that gives me $20,000 of property liability coverage in case something happens to their trailer or my bike. I just trailered a 450lb bike this past weekend from Buffalo, New York to Rochester, New York in some of the heaviest thunderstorm down pouring rain that I've ever driven in. I was grateful to have that extra insurance. The only bad thing about the U-Haul trailer rental is it is that you have to return it to the hometown that you rented it from. I've never been able to understand that, but that's the way it is. Also, you have to tow with your own vehicle or a U-Haul rental truck. The U-Haul rental trucks are a rip-off at the roughly $0.50 a mile that they charge. I once rolled up in a beautiful brand new GMC 1-ton truck that had like 200 miles on the odo, and U-Haul would not let me go with that rental truck. They want to make the $0.50 a mile off of their rental pickup trucks. I think a step up from your dolly be the rear carrier where you can roll your bike up a ramp and tie it down at several points including the handlebars and wheels. I have heard a lot of people having good results with those bikes as long as they are under 600 pounds. Harbor Freight has one rated at 600 lb. I'm thinking about picking one up just to look it over. Their price at $250 seems inflated compared to online models of the same weight carrying capacity that can be had for round 190. However, I like dealing with my local Harbor Freight. I know the guys and gals, and if there were any problems, I know they would take care of it. That might be worth the extra expense for me. I would feel very comfortable trailering my Honda xr150l and my Royal Enfield Himalayan 411 on that hitch carrier, but I don't believe I would ever even attempt to load my Harley Davidson Sportster 1200 on it. That would have to be loaded in the bed of my truck as I just don't feel that hitch carrier would be strong enough. Thanks again, Brother, for adding greatly to the knowledge base of how to transport motorcycles. For whatever my opinion is worth, you did a great job with the fabrication and the research and arrived at the same conclusion I did: "Sketchy." Peace.

    If this had a hinge / pivot designed to stay vertical, between the dolly and the vehicle, and with the use of a cross bar on the dolly to stabilize the bike, wouldn't that eliminate the leaning and eliminate tying anything to the vehicle? Almost like pulling a trailer, except you would have a vertical hinge instead of a ball. Noted the hinge would need to be a strong one.

      A 5/8" grade 8 bolt with washers and a lock nut would probably be enough as a vertical piviot. A 10,000 lb towbar doesn't use much more. Using a castle nut, or drilling the nut and bolt for a pin would be better though.

    • @AdventureGrampa
      @AdventureGrampa 11 місяців тому

      There is a rake angle on the front forks of bikes to give them stability. When you steer your bike around a corner the bike leans over into the corner. Using a dolly like this you have locked (or tried to lock) the front of the bike vertically to the rear of the car. The fork angle still exists, so when you tow the bike around corner the bike has to lean over. If the dolly is securely designed then the leaning should have minimal effect and it should return to vertical on a straight road.

    Hi, HooptieDoodle.
    I love your idea! A lot! You sound like my significant other with all the worries and questions. I'm going to build this same type of lift. I'm going to put hold downs to compress the front shocks, which well stabilize your... my bike. No need to tie the handle bars to the roof rack. Oh you don't need for a four foot cross section. Just need to put holes on the bottom of your tire mount, so your tie-down hooks can be fastened to them. Don't call it a tow doll, or if you do, let's say. Some states have you license them and you can tow vehicles as if it's a trailer. So let say your vehicle is licensed. Isn't your licensed vehicle the tow dolly now? Call it a lift, you'll be fine. Your welds look great! Are they? 6013 electrodes have a tinsel strength of 60,000 psi. Ok let say yours have a 20,000 psi that's still more than twenty times more than your motorcycle weighs. Oh, I weld, tow all kinds of things from small utility trailers to semis doubles-triples. HAZMAT loads of 129,500 ice, snow, sleet, rain up and down the Rockies. If in doubt, don't! I've had cops stop me for one or more things. If you know your stuff and keep your mouth basically shut. There's a fifth amendment for a reason. Your be fine! PS. But remember I'm a professional! Don't do this at home! Just if you're not comfortable don't do it! Really like your contraption! I hope this helped you understand my prospective.

      I am glad you like the lift. Good luck with the one you're making. I do think the space efficiency of the concept is it's best feature. It's easy to store and can fit in a trunk. I agree with your points and like your saying of not doing if you aren't comfortable. I frequently say that sometimes, if you haven't done something before, there is a chance of messing it up and you should be comfortable with such an outcome before jumping into a project. One way of learning is by making mistakes 😀

    Oh I finally see what others mean about the lean. The lean itself comes from the motorcycle tire being on a different path then the front tire. The lean is based on the point of axis above forks and is determined by how high the front tire is above the rear tire, the degree of turning of the vehicle and the rake of the forks as well. I think. What do you say? The only option to stop the lean would be to tie the back of bike to the carrier and then strap the bars to the bike so the front wheel does not turn.

    • @AdventureGrampa
      @AdventureGrampa 11 місяців тому

      The forces have to go somewhere. If you try to make everything so rigid that the bike doesn't lean, then something has to break.

    • @robert100xx
      @robert100xx 2 роки тому

      Not quite it. The bike being towed has no traction/acceleration or braking forces passing through the tyre. These forces are being taken by the towing vehicle. The only force is the weight of the bike. The tyre wear will be negligible. Minimal downside would be puncture risk and if the gear selector on the bike is loose/worn and road conditions might jolt the gear pedal sufficiently to engage a gear..

    The lean problem results from having two axis in play at the same time, the first being the steering stem of the bike and the second being the wheel axel, particularly as the steering stem is not at a right angle to the axel. The result is the opposite lean of the bike in turns as the back wheel trails to the inside of the turn causing the stem axis to allow a turn but in combination with the rotation of the bike on the wheel axis allows the bike to rotate rearward. If the turn is tight enough the stem will rotate far enough to allow the bike to drop on the front axel ending up sliding on it's side, particularly if the bike is equipped with hard bags and/or crash guards. Use of ratchet straps to limit this rearward rotaion is not a good idea as it will place a load on only the one strap which is on the inside of the turn , far exeeding it's load capacity. This type of device is sim;ly bad engineering and apart from being dangerous at speed is not going to get your bike home safely. The qualifier I keep hearing in these videos is that the device will only be used in emergency situations or for limited distances. That is not a reason for anyone to put the public at risk by hauling an inadequetly secured load on the road. Imagine the carnage that a 400 lb. plus object moving at only 30 MPH can do. As for the tow dollies secured to a vehicle's frame or bumper with ratchet straps, need I explain whiy that is an irresponsible design? If any sort of device fails in use, resulting in damage to persons and/or property , the responsibility lies not with the manufacturer but with the user. That means you. Now you know.

      The mechanic that inspected the bike thought I could have ridden it over as well. Which is likely true for a titled bike ( note I didn't say clean titled because the bike had no title at all) but since my bike was legally a pile of parts and I don't like paying traffic tickets, $15 for a trailer seemed really smart 😀.

      Those of us that like working with our hands, minds and have the time and money, enjoy the heck out of the whole process of fabrication. I'm currently sbuilding a 1970 Mach 1 Mustang classic from a rusted shell to a nice quality performance driver. Why if I could have just bought one for $40k and never touched it or had to put a single part on it? Just add gas. Well, there you go. I'm retired, I have income, I have all day long to do things. I do what I like doing. I want to personalize this car with the options I won't. Not someone else. So also, I am building a motorized bike which will have a home built mini camper to pull around. Custom. Matching paint. So... Also, yes I need to take my bike down to the shop to have a rear tire put on it. So I was considering either buying a cheap tow dolly like you see in the links, or even an $895 dollar one...Just to have one. But I really like the idea of fabricating my own, for my bike and making it custom. I may use it once. I may use it twice. Who knows. I may die next week. But If I don't, I will enjoy building this tow dolly. And the pride that comes from that is so much better to me then going down and spending money for one that I didn't build. Or spend good money to buy one I would have to reinforce or fix. Why? Or pay to rent a trailer or borrow my neighbors....Why? That's easy and sure anyone can do that. But the building, fabricating. Man that is so cool. I have the tools. I have the time. I have the skill. Its fun. I like the feeling of making stuff. Hope this helps explain why I don't just get my gal friend to follow me to the bike dealer. Which would be super easy. And it makes sense to people that are busy. Maybe. But one cannot beat the feeling of doing things with their hands and working on stuff they made. Proud thing it is. It is just so much fun to me, anyway. I do have an aluminum 4 wheel ramp that I could use to drive the bike up into my truck! But I don't have a custom tow dolly that mounts on the hitch. YET! :)
