      This cars are designed to be able to tow, they are engineered, including the suspension, to handle much heavier loads then a motorcycle, you dont even know what you are talking about. If your car can not tow a trailer then yes this are bad idea, but if they can, then just check your specs

  • @MrLazyAmerica

    A foldaway trailer would be nice. But the one you have linked in your discription is literally 10x the price of a hitch mounted carrier. Also if your issue is with rust, then it's the SAME ISSUE for both trailer and hitch mounted carrier.

    • @codrinmicusan446
      @codrinmicusan446 Рік тому +2

      not really, the trailer has two wheels to hold the load of the bike, a hitch trailer is basically 200 odd kilos dangling off the back of your frame, i'd feel significantly safer with a rusty trailer hitch PULLING a trailer than CARRYING 200 KILOS

      @@markpowersports1278 It's connected to the same hitch, but obviously trailer have wheels so it's only leaning on your hitch.
      You're only puling trailer, so a small part of weight is resting on your car, rest in on its own wheels. With a carrier all weight of bike and carrier is resting on your car and don't forget how leaver works, because it's not helping.

    None of this makes sense. Stop giving advice when you don’t know what you are talking about. A hitch carrier is fine. Your reason that a hitch could fall out makes no sense. Then how does anyone tow anything?

  • @flintersroo4386
    @flintersroo4386 4 роки тому +41

    The same problems you have with rusty frames being used for a hitch carrier also would apply to that same hitch hauling your motorcycle trailer. An unsafe hitch is dangerous no matter what it is loaded on it, carrier or trailer.
    Now ease of loading? Yes, trailers have that covered. But now we have the front wheel carriers that lift the front wheel of a bike and make it the trailer. Only a portion of the bike's weight is on the tow vehicle. It's secured in place, and is very stable if attached to the carrier correctly. It's a one person job and when you're done, remove it from the receiver and toss on a shelf. A very affordable and portable solution as an option to consider.

      @dangerdanadv1445 3 роки тому +1

      While I think his argument is rather silly, you have to be pretty dense to think a trailer puts equivalent stress to a hitch carrier. With a 65lb hitch carrier and a 350 lb bike, you're looking at probably 450-500lbs of tongue weight (due to the leverage, the hitch carrier acts like a lever with a weight on it). With his trailer, which probably weighs about 350 lbs, holding that same 350lb bike, you're probably looking at 100-200 lbs of tongue weight. Maybe even less.
      They're just not equivalent.

    • @orange3203
      @orange3203 3 роки тому +1

      @@dangerdanadv1445 true but even a class 2 receiver is rated for more 350lbs. Class 3 and above is fine. On my ton truck the hitch is rated for several thousand pounds of tongue weight.

    I've been using a hitch carrier and I love it, works great for me. I live in an area with no salt on roads though and my SUV can carry plenty tongue weight. Never had any problem loading my bikes on one, you gotto strap down the bikes well so they don't move. And as any equipment gotto make sure it is in good condition and maintain it properly.

    I have used a hitch carrier for 11 years now. Traveled over four different states, back roads, rain/shine, etc. Far better that hauling/pulling a trailer. I installed tail lights on the bottom and just plug them in just like you would with a trailer. If you have a vehicle in poor condition you shouldn't be hauling or pulling anything.

    I ended up here because I've been thinking of a Jeep Grand Cherokee to use for camping with a roof tent. I thought...hitching a moto would be a nice way to get around if the Cherokee was tent bound.
    My thoughts to this video? Rust proofing is an option, and I always spray my undercarriage when I wash my car in the winter (New England). I'm not crazy about hitch trailers because I feel they'll make the backend of the vehicle heavy and wallow, but in my case I'm thinking a small ADV or Supermoto.

    Do you have any empirical evidence that hitch carriers have fallen off due to a rusty frame? I guess it's possible if you mount it to a rust-bucket, but I've never heard of it happening.

    2:40 the point about rust on the frame is a good point that i didn't think about. I was planning on towing on local roads at low speeds using a wheel dolly so there would be lower weight, just to get the bike worked on. But I do have an older car.

    when this happens, it would be nice to hook a carrier on the back and bring my moped on the back.

    You need to know the maximum tongue weight your vehicle can support. It's usually 10% of the maximum towing capacity. For truck based SUV like a Tahoe, Suburban or Expedition, you can probably carry a 600lb bike on a trailer safely. For most crossovers with a 50lb carrier and even 300lb dual sport you'd be close to maximum safe tongue weight. I am hesitant to use a hitch carrier with my crossover to carry a WR250R, although it would be much more convenient than a trailer.

    • @CycleCruza
      @CycleCruza  5 років тому +2

      The Curt class 3 hitch I installed on my SUV is only rated 350 lbs for the tongue weight. Also, I could not even install one of the hitch bolts to the frame because the thread on the frame had rusted through. Your hitch strength is only as good as the mounting on your frame and the integrity of your frame. A hitch is simply attached to your frame with bolts. No way in hell I would trust a hitch carrier on vehicles up north where salt is put on the road in the winter. Also, I know a few dudes who had their back window busted out from the handlebar slamming on the back window.

    • @shielasimpleton7346

      CycleCruza The window thing for sure. I just meant, the weight is no problem if you have a real truck. If you were planning on using a hitch carrier, you wouldn’t get a class 3 hitch. They sometimes don’t make class 4s for smaller vehicles like suvs or perhaps your BO van, but again if you have a truck, it’s not really an issue. As for the rust tho, I mean I’ll still carry a 5k trailer with a truck with some rust on it, so long as its not structural, which would be some serious rust. But maybe that’s just me 🤷‍♀️

    • @CycleCruza

    Hey CycleCruza, one thing those of us that live down South always do when we buy used cars is look at the frame to see how rusty it is. That rust is a result of all the salt and brine they use on the roads in wintertime to keep ice from forming. Down south, we don't really have to worry about that, so our vehicles always have good looking frames for much longer.

      Make sure the hitch tongue weight rating is sufficient for you bike and find a hack to prevent the handlebar from bashing your back window which is quite common, Also, you need to make sure the tail lights are visible, if not add some dot tail lights on the carrier and re-locate the plate to avoid cops ticketing you.

    This guy missed the biggest reason against a hitch mount motorcycle carrier which is torque multiplication. Normal hitches do not extend very far.
    A motorcycle carrier is further out from the vehicle mount point causing more rotational torque to be applied to the hitch.
    Example: A regular ball hitch that sticks out about 1ft is rated for 500lbs. (I know 1 foot is a bit much, but it makes math easy)
    If a motorcycle carrier is 1ft further out, the weight of the bike is doubled. So a 400lb bike would apply 800lbs to the hitch.

    • @Eastsidegeorgiaboy
      @Eastsidegeorgiaboy 2 роки тому +2

      That happens because of improper tie down. People aren't tightening them down tight enough, nor in good locations. People forget that the suspension of the bike will compress while you're towing it. If not strapped down properly, it will lead to the bike moving a significant amount, enough to where it hits your back window or tailgate, or even possibly falls off the hitch carrier. You only need 2 straps. You can use more if that makes you feel better, but two is all you need. Get a fork saver in the color of your choosing, install over front wheel, and strap down nice and tight. Make sure you put the bike in gear at least. Putting it in gear keeps the bike from rolling around. That's all you need.

    I just bought one of these to haul around my 1985 xj700. It has a 600 lb capacity and the bike weighs maybe 480. The hitch I installed on my f250 has a 1000 lb toungue weight capacity so all in all I'm in spec. Now, if I had a nice bike I wouldnt use a hitch carrier either. At least not this one. My xj700 is a beater that already had scratches and dings. It's a bitch to load by yourself for probably any bike heavier than an average dirt bike. I've already broken the mirror off the first time I went to use it because I lost my balance. Again, beater bike, not really too concerned, especially since the bike is insured for more than it's worth. There are far superior hitch carrier designs out there, with a substantial price tag but it all depends on your investment in the bike. I've seen some custom made hitch carriers built so heavily it could handle two gold wings. It's just a matter of finding the proper application to match your needs.

    For those in or out of the rust belt if your receiver cant handle the direct weight of a sport bike or enduro you probably also shouldn't be towing a trailer and introducing something with wheels that has the potential to go a lot farther down a rode with less resistance and cause just as much damage.
    i do not live in the rust belt but i feel very sorry for your vehicles.
    just my 2 cents, love the videos don't stop

    Huh at first I was thinking ah here we go but you provided tons of really great points and even stated which applications this would be actually useful for... Really cool stuff, appreciate the video CC!

    When you put a trailer on and hit the breaks it’s all pushes forward and puts weight on the hitch so if your rusty it’s the same problem.
