Great job. You just walked me threw my 50cc scooter kick starter repair. I followed your every word and it worked out easy and quick. Thank you. Keep posting videos because my scooter needs alot of work.
Same here.. thank you
Absolute best video on this assembly! Much Mahalo OP!
Fantastic guide. My Scoot left me stranded today with a weak battery. It was very frustrating and embarrassing to be at the grocery store in 26° weather trying in vain to get it to start. I have resolved to never rely upon a battery for starting ever again. It is a nice bonus, but every trip will involve at least one kick start.
Just be aware kickstarter should only be used when your battery fails. Used my kickstarter for about a month because I had a broken spark plug and now it doesn’t work, and gotta watch this video to fix it
If your scooter has a Bendix (the part that engages between the starter and the gear that turns the engine inside the CVT), that could also be a problem. On my 50cc scooter, I ended up upgrading to 12v 6ah Lifepo4 battery. But I also live in South East USA, and don't have to worry about much cold weather.
I do appreciate you taking your time to do these videos you deserve an award for the amount of money you have saved humanity
You tube is a wealth of information on how to perform and operate anything from a moped kick start to flying a helicopter. Thanks for the instructions, I have downloaded this into my head.
Thanks so much i finally got my moped running.
I can't thank you enough for this video. My spring in my kick starter got jammed up because I dumped my scooter over when some idiot pulled out in front of me. Followed your video and got it fixed. Thank you!!!
Glad it helped. Hope you didn't get hurt in the crash.
I have to dig into there as the kick start on mine works but won't return up and just hangs straight down. Except for the side cover removal, this is exactly what I needed! Thanks!
After some cut fingers lol this tutorial works save me some cash thanks man
Very well done
THANKS FOR SHARING.🇺🇲✌️👍
Perfect timing for this vid. I was just about to put my cvt cover back together but because it had been lying in bits for while I forgot the order in which to put it back. Love your videos and they have helped me alot! Thanks and keep uploading!
Glad it's helpful! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for video. I couldn't figure out what i was doing wrong. Followed your steps and perfect fix.
I would put the kickstart lever at 11 or 12 o clock so that when you drop the gear pawl in, the kick lever is still at around 10 o clock, on the return. that will give you a good down swing.
Out of all of the videos I've watched for this particular project so far, this is the best!
I'm about to attempt this on mine!
Good luck with it.
Did you manage? I have the kick starter kit and will try to install it . How come don't they come with it from factory? Do you keep it on at all times just incase?
That is perfect. I'll need to replace that spring soon. Mine is returning slowly. Thank you so much.
Thank you so, so much. This is my first vehicle in any way, shape, or form, and managed to kill the kick starter within 1 week of getting the scooter. Slid in the rain right onto it.
i installed New kickstart parts on my kymco but the gears slips do You know what i am doin wrong?
sorry for my bad english
Saving this video....pretty sure I'll be repairing everything on my scooter
i installed New kickstart parts on my kymco but the gears slips do You know what i am doin wrong?
sorry for my bad english
AWESOME job ... no shaky video like some you watch.. Clear view and perfect description.. Taking off the old snap ring without a snap ring pliers was fun!!! NOT.... two jewelers screwdrivers and small cutter!!!
Didnt know it was that easy.. I am only not a big fan of that kickstart lever.. Beter use one of a peugeot vertical scooter like the speedfight 50 or vivacity 50.
My kickstart keeps getting off of the drivetrain, i do exactly what u do. But when i mount it the kickstart moves up a little bit and then kicking does not work anymore
Excellent tutorial
This was great. Every part explained. Thank you.

Why is there no bushing inside my cover that's weird other video guy don't show no bushing inside cover
You still helping people nine years later bro thank you
Finally I found a good video o I have been meaning to out mine back on for months I just couldn't find s good video or a friend that new how to help so thank you good video
Helpful video. Thanks for the help!!!
Very helpful thanks so much now how about putting it on the cover
Great video. I’m gonna get a big coffee and sit down for a try at this right now. Kick start is stuck after a crash and don’t not what I’m gonna find. But after watching this video I feel ready
It just needed the surface corrosion and belt dust sprayed off with brake cleaner. Then a thin layer of lube. Easy to reassemble using your instructions. Works like a charm. Thanks again
Hello I have a question. Is it possible to give the scooter gear oil other than through the drain or fill hole? Both of the bolts on my scooter are STUCK on and I've unfortunately stripped the bolt head so I cannot grip it with my ratchet
Your best bet is to fix those. Try vise grips first. Get them as tight as possible and then try to loosen. Maybe use some penetrating oil prior to that. You can try a chisel to turn the bolt. You can use a screw extractor. There are videos on all of this stuff.
I couldn't do it the way it was shown had to spin it by hand with the crank what a pain in the ass this was
where is the plastic or rubber ring that you said goes over gear????
Thanks bud. Best video I've found yet.
Excellent presentation.
Im not sure if you still respond to commetns, but I have a kickstarter that is stuck down and every crank of the engine it sounds like its grinding, do you think replacing the kick start will make it work again?
Sounds like something may be broken or out of place. At very least, take the cover off and inspect.
Really well done video. I am going to use it to lubricate a stickie kick start on a Kymco People 150.
After servicing the kickstart, I still can't get it to start my Kymco People 150. Any suggestions.
So I’ve now put like 3 different kickstart kits in my scoot and it never springs back?? Why?? And now it doesn’t engage until it’s like halfway kicked down (makes it a pain in the ass) please help
First step is to see how it acts with the cover off. Then you know if the kickstart mechanism is a problem or if there's an issue with spacing or something like that.
Ty for this hers was destroyed and had a spare easy to snap off. Needed to know how to put tension and how far to go in thanks again. Now the part that turns it any videos on that part it's loose hope it's supposed to be lose ?
The kick lever is what turns the kick start gears. It's on a splined shaft and will get loose when splines wear on either the shaft or lever. Whatever is worn should be replaced at that point.
If you meant the part that the kickstart assembly turns, that's the starter pawl attached to the crank. That definitely should not be loose.
Hey I got a 50 cc scooter Yamaha zuma with no kick start can one be installed onto that ? I been stranded a few times due to my battery and before I look into buying another scooter id figure I ask first
If it's the bugeye Zuma (horizontal Minarelli engine), then it should be very similar to this. CVT cover is a bit different, but same process.
ua-cam.com/video/sJ7jxWexjZY/v-deo.html
Do you know the kickstart lever pedal size I'm looking to upgrade mine to a better one 13mm?
Should be about 13mm. Around 12.5 to 13.5, depending if you measure largest or smallest diameter of splines.
Good video! You really saved me😅
thanks AGAIN ! YOU DA BOMB !!
Best method i seen thanks 🎉
Thanks :)
For the life of me, I can't pull that fucking spring back.
I had a hard time with kickstarts when I first started working on scoots. I was trying hooks and wires and prying to get the spring in place, but for me the vise grips make it fairly simple. The vise grips have to be able to grab well or they'll slip off when you're pulling it around. Got anyone else around that you can get to try it?
What size is the snapring?
Where can i buy the washer for the gear ebay or amazon website link cant find it ? I don't feel like spending 40_60$ on new Kickstarter
Would a washer from the hardware store work if i cant find it online
@@ELViSLOK It doesn't have to be anything special as long as the dimensions are close.
I followed all this and its all hooked up.. But i think its to big maybe or i did do something wrong. Replacement part matched my motor code 1p39qmb but when mounted on my scoot if i hit estart the kick start turns. The idle gear isn't on right or to big idk.
i just did all of this with some slight veriation came to the same end with it back together and my engine is fighting me when i try to kick it over, any advice would greatly be appriciated @49ccScoot
Number one would be to make sure it's not something else. Try turning the flywheel over and see if it is tough. Remove the CVT cover and try the flywheel again and see if it's still tough.
@@49ccscoot I’ll try that tonight when I get home it also doesn’t want to start off the electric starter bendix is just fine just cranks over hard and tries to fire hard every other revolution
engine spins freely and cranks over on starter smoothly it just stops when it hits compression, i'm gonna try bypassing the solenoid and see if i externally power the starter myself if it would solve my issues and tell me if the solenoid is bad dispite it working like i think it should every time i press the starter button@@49ccscoot

Very very helpful
Why’s my kick start kicking down but not coming bk up on its own mate thanks
A few guesses; something needs cleaning/greasing, something is out of place, the spring is weak. The only way you'll figure it out for sure is to check it out.
Well looks like I’m taking it apart then mate
Hey man my bike makes a terrible ass Grinding noise from the side casing sometimes when it's running if I kick the kick start up or get it just right it shuts it up it's annoying and doesn't affect anything any help would be much appreciated 90GTVert
+David Figueiredo It may be in need of cleaning and lubrication. Sometimes cleaning and greasing will go a long way. Otherwise, perhaps the spring is worn out.
+90GTVert I took the side casing off today and I think the starter gear I think that's what that gear is it grinds on the wheel and sparks it's loose and no matter how many times I put it back in it just doesn't stay it just comes loose and sparks and grinds on that wheel you think that's the problem that starter gear
Maybe it or the cover is worn. Shouldn't be loose. Gotta find out why.
God bless you
can i go to lowes and get a kickstart gear washer ?
Measure the OD of the shaft and ID of the recess in the cover and you can try to find something close to those. I have had better luck and mom and pop hardware stores, Ace, or Fastenal.
Those springs are scary! hehe, at 2:27 I felt OOO DON'T SHOOT ME
Good video that friend, I congratulate you. One question it would be interesting videos of sawest thou gy6 150 or 125, it's curious that you don't have a scooter 150 hehe
I have one sitting in the corner of the garage. Been there for something like 6-7 years. Belongs to a friend that never rides it. One day I'd like to get my motorcycle endorsement and buy it.
Thanks for this
Thank you. Great video, extremely well explained and presented. Helped me repair mechanism in less that an hour!
hey i need help my transmission belt broke into peices in the case and ever since that happened the kickstart won’t go down but it can go perfectly up like nothing i don’t know what’s the problem i took out the the transmission case to see if the kickstart can go down snd it does and the engine works electric start can’t turn on the bike but it almost starts it
I'd suggest checking everything over after a belt failure. It gets debris everywhere and sometimes rollers get out of place and/or parts can be damaged.
@@49ccscoot thank you for the fast reply i also put a big bore kit but i forgot that that i had to break it in and i riding it for like 2 hours and took like 30 minute breaks and i saw smoking coming out of th engine and i saw oil on top of the engine what can be the problem?
@@chrisblockz3337 Sounds like maybe a leak or crankcase venting issue. If the smoke is coming from the exhaust, it could be piston rings not sealing.
Hey what is that piece that you didn’t have in the video? Like what is it called?
Kickstarter shaft bushing, I think. That's what it shows up as at Parts For Scooters.

This scooter is my only form of transportation and it's very important that we get something homelessness depends on it I do need help figuring out how to turn the scooter over it's a 50cc
@@fatlaed6251 First, the kickstart or electric start won't make it drip fuel. As long as the kickstart is turning the engine over, returns OK, etc... then the kicker is not likely your problem.
If you know the hoses are worn and leaking, replace them. If suspected to be low quality, replace them. If budget is tight, you can try just replacing what's known to leak, but I'd advise checking options for hose purchases. Sometimes you can get a roll with plenty for about the same as just buying a few feet.

No
Just an observation.... Instead of holding it over the edge. drill a 1.5" hole in your bench top. Helps when rebuilding bike motors. Good video.
Thanks. I'd prob build a platform just for it if I wanted to do that. I don't want to drill this bench. I've got 3/4" plywood topped in 1/8" steel and I'd prefer that it's intact.
do you need that washer on the gear?
It reduces the amount of play in the shaft and may also help the circlip stay in place if it's not banging around from excessive play.
My kick start when i kick hard just stops and when i continue kicking the gears may crack or even break. Any idea why? My friend has the same problem too.
Maybe a worn bushing or anything else that could cause it perhaps to shift and jam up. I'd first see if I could find excess play from something like that.
Can you use the g6 kickstarter shaft to PGO Big max?
I'm not sure. Sorry. I did a quick search but it appears that there are different models.
@@49ccscoot thank you for.your.quick reply.how about welding a loose.kickstarter shaft could.this work?
@@realstreetcatslife5015 Depends what you're welding. If the diameter were worn, you could probably weld and then machine it down to get the proper diameter again.
How do I wire the resistor to the automatic choke?
Hi, i am upgraded 49cc to 100cc and start kicker always hardly kick me back .... Any idea what is wrong?
If the engine has good compression then maybe the kickstart spring needs to be replaced.
my kick starter on my 50cc Tao Tao gives no response when kicked , no resistance and it doesn't go back in its original position i have to manually move the lever (kickstarter)back up. What should i do?
Take the cover off and check it out. See if anything is out of place or binding.
Does that kick start kit work for a 125cc scooter ?
Depends on the scoot, but if it's a Chinese 125cc it's more likely the kickstart for a GY6.

@@49ccscoot thanks apreaceat it
Thanks. Did you make that cover yourself or can you buy those somewhere? Its nice, because you dont need to take it off for visual inspections.
It's a stock TaoTao cover. I cut the front with a cutoff wheel and the back with a hole saw. I open all of mine up somehow to help keep the CVT cooler.
Great video but.....how do I remove the cover to get at the assembly shown? I wish I had the 3 minutes prior to this to see how you got the cover off. I pulled the 8 bolts off but seems there are more or are hidden? I can see a gasket between there - do I pry the CVT cover off after removing the 8 bolts? Thanks.
Once you're certain all of the bolts are off (they should be visible), try tapping gently around the edges of the cover while trying to remove it. Use something soft like a rubber or plastic mallet. Give that an effort. If that doesn't get you anywhere, then you can try to find a spot to pry or that would allow you to tap gently in the direction for it to come off. Try your best not to damage anything though. The covers are pretty fragile and it's easy to scar parts when prying.
My kickstart keeps getting stuck in the down position. I put it together exactly like you did in the video. My battery died because it's getting pretty cold. I've decided to wait till the weather gets better to get a new one. So i need to kickstart any suggestions?
Sure all parts are clean? Some belt dust or dirt can be enough to make them tough to operate.
i installed New kickstart parts on my kymco but the gears slips do You know what i am doin wrong?
sorry for my bad english
If you watch the video for install and inspect all parts to be sure they have good teeth/splines, it should work if the spacing is alright with the CVT cover.
I've used this video 7x now
Can you make a video on how to take the cover off? or is it pretty self explanatory. thanks much.
Taran Holt Remove the bolts and it should come off. Sometimes the first time it's removed you need to bump it with a rubber mallet to break it free. ua-cam.com/video/2EjW-iSP-Q8/v-deo.html
Will the kick mess up if you lose that rubber piece that sits there??
It should work, but it's best to have it in there.
@@49ccscoot mines just not springing back, it kicks over and then I have to kick it back up (i know it’s no suppose to be that way) but everything seems to be in place right
@@predator_boiz336 It's easy enough for the spring to not seat just right or a shaft could be binding. Sometimes the little gear shaft binds, especially if it's dirty and/or not greased. It would be best to replace the plastic part when you can, but you can see that mine worked without it. If you work it by hand with the cover off, you should be able to get an idea of where the resistance is. If all else fails and the cover stuff is all good on it's own, it may be that it's binding against the pawl. Maybe from some sort of spacing issue with front pulley bits.

I will try it, if no luck i will replace. Thanks again. Regards David.
Super, vielen Dank auch aus Deutschland 😊
Every Amazon GY-6 Kickstart assembly that I see gets bad reviews of them breaking after a week. Do you have any specific brand to reccommend?
Not really. Maybe Kymco would do better since they are generally better quality than Chinese scooters? I consider these GY6 50 kickstarters to be use only when needed and I rely on the e-start. CVT covers break too often or they just come apart and need to be put back together.
The gears seem pretty solid.. I bought a new set before realizing that it was the actually the cover that had broken. Just put it back together with all the new parts. We'll see how long it lasts this Time lol.. pretty sure it cracked when the bike fell over, landing on the lever, then broke the rest of the way when I was romping on it one day it wouldn't start.
My kick start is straight up broken I jest want to buy a new one
You can usually buy the parts individually or in a kit, but you'll have to install them. I think someone was selling covers with kickstart installed brand new (maybe ScrappyDog?) but price was kinda high. Perhaps you could find one used in good shape with everything installed.
What did you use to cut the cover an angle grinder? My 139qmb gy6 50cc scooter keeps breaking belts I suspect it's due to overheating in the cvt, as the belts always look somewhat melted after they break. The fan also melted , it looked like the roller weights were melting on the sides you can see the shine from the heat on the flat spots as well. There is a small cracked portion that collapsed at the edge of the roller weights housing part of the variator I suspect that's from the heat getting the cvt so hot that part of it just caved in, or at least that's what it looks like. Do you have any Idea what could be causing this? I went through 3 high quality belts each lasted less than 100 mile I ran it pretty hard with no cvt cover for about 2 hours and the belt was warm but no signs of wear on the sides, which is where the belts start to get chewed up the clutch was warm as expected, but the variator on the other hand, was very hot. I couldn't even touch it. Thanks in advanced!
Rear was a hole saw. Prob a grinder for the front. I also do shapes using a drill and then carbide burrs and files to finish.
Anything that slips will make a lot of heat. Clutch slip and belt slip are prime suspects. I start most CVT troubleshooting with a thorough teardown, inspection, and cleaning. ua-cam.com/video/2EjW-iSP-Q8/v-deo.html
Figured out why my scooter was running so hot. The clutch had no glazing luckily but, I had a performance carb on with an 85 main jet and a high flow air filter. Long story short, I rode it in the snow somewhile back and got some street salt in the carb and ruined it. So I put the stock carb back on. The problem is I didn't put the stock air filter back on. I just ran it with the highflow one. This caused my scooter to run lean and overheat causing the cvt to overheat and rip my belts. Opened up the stock carb and saw a 75 main I knew instantly what the problem was. I hope I didn't cause serious damage by running lean for so long. Anyway thanks or your help, I'm writing this in hopes that someone who is having a similar problem will have some idea as of why. I focused all on the variator and clutch this whole time when the problem was poor carb jetting.
great job
why cant i get a vid on 49cc start, bendix repair?
I never repair them, just replace. Take the bolts out of the CVT cover and remove it. You should be able to work the bendix out past the variator and fixed pulley. Make sure the bushings are in place in the CVT cover and in the case where it rides and clean. Apply a dab of grease to each end of the bendix where it rides in the bushings. Work the new bendix in there the same way the old one came out. Replace the cover and bolts.
***** COPY.
is it the same steps but backwards to take it out?? sorry if a silly question
Basically. Most end up with them out because something broke or came loose, but I don't suggest those removal methods. lol
Well i took it apart due the gear being stripped so i took it apart an hours tryin to put it back togethor, i got it lmao but now the moped won't kick over, any suggestions?? All the parts are in right.
First, figure out if you can even turn the engine over by hand or with the e-starter. If it won't move those ways, either the engine is seized/jammed somehow or the kickstart gear is jamming it up. If it turns those ways, then perhaps a part is bad in the kick assembly.
If by "won't kick over" you mean that it will rotate but won't fire up and start, then that's a whole difference scenario and I'd start by checking for spark.
my kick starter gears are missing the washer that goes under the idle shaft gear. 2 of my mopeds didn't have it and it stripped out on me and then I ordered 2 sets of kick starter gear kits and it didn't come with that washer. I assembled both kick starter gears for the 2 mopeds and they get stuck in the down position and slip. They don't engage the gear mounted to the Variator drive face to spin the crank shaft. I have tried talking apart and reassembling the kick starter assemblies many times and still have the same problem. I am stumped with this problem. Can you please help me? Thanks. I need to get it fixed.
Can't find a replacement washer? How about a hardware store?
90GTVert I haven't looked for a replacement washer yet. Ace Hardware will have one most likely. I don't know if the washer will make any difference if it's installed under the Idle shaft gear or not. This is the first time I have ran into this problem with the mopeds. I would figure that if you install new gears it should work properly but in this case it doesn't work for 2 mopeds. I have seen online that there's a 7 spline and 8 spline idle shaft gear for the 139QMB engine. Does that make a difference what idle shaft gear you use? What will using the wrong spline gear do to the kick starter? Will it cause the slipping problem that I am having with the 2 mopeds? Any help would be great. Thanks.
I've never used the wrong gear, but that should make a difference. I would think the 2 gears wouldn't want to mesh properly.
90GTVert the gear came with the kick start gear kit. I asked one of the companies about the difference between the two gears and they told me that the 8 spline gear spins faster than the 7 spline gear. They don't make matching half moon gears that are specifically for the 7 or 8 spline gears. Have you ever ran into the problem that I have with new kick starter gears slipping and not engaging with the gear on the variator drive face? This is the second set of gears that I have installed. The first set of gears that I installed were tight and binding and getting stuck down when I kick start the moped. Half of the half moon gear wore out flat. I think that the cheap Chinese parts are not made correctly and the metal that they use is cheap recycled materials. The stock gears last 10 times longer than the aftermarket parts. The hole in the case where the idle shaft gear sits in is loose for both of my mopeds. I don't know if it supposed to be that way or if it's worn out too much. If it is then I may have to buy 2 short cases for 2 motobravo mopeds and 1 long case for my Kymco agility 50 moped. About $100 worth of cases for the kick starter gears.
It's crazy how much problems I am having with the kick start gears. It's also the only way I can start all 3 mopeds because I installed 3 52 mm 105 cc BBK on all of them and the compression is too much for the stock starter to start it up.
Hey, i'm fixing my kickstart, everything looks exactly like in this video, but it binds up. Only works if I apply pressure to that small gear. What could be the problem?
Maybe something isn't seated right or worn so there's slop?
@@49ccscoot fun part number 2, I broke the line-up tab :) now I dithed the spring, it ratchets some times but spins. Now fun number 3 hard to start. It didn't actually start. Maybe it has low compression. How can I test compression?
@@gedas3419 The kick starts on the 139QMB suck. They break way too easily and IMO should only be used as emergency backup. I would suggest getting the electric start in good working order if it is why you are working with the kick start.

Is all parts the same on a Short and long case?
The process is the same as shown in the video but there are some scooters that use different lengths of kick shafts. Not necessarily short/long case differences, but differences in manufacturers, so if you have to order parts it's best to check measurements when provided by a seller.
