- Sociopolitical opposites attract in director Sydney Pollack's wistful, Oscar-winning tearjerker about an outspoken political crusader named Katie Morosky (Barbra Streisand) who finds herself drawn to glib golden boy Hubbell Gardner (Robert Redford). Despite their differences, the improbable couple eventually ties the knot, but a move to Tinseltown and the firestorm surrounding the 1950s blacklist unravel the marriage.

I think most of us are here for one of two reasons or two of two reasons..
1 - Lorelai and Luke just broke up and Lorelai called Luke’s machine and left a rambling crying message about the way we were and how she just needed him to come over and you’re sitting there crying to Gilmore Girls, thinking “man, I needa watch that movie”
and/or
2 - Carrie just explained that the world is made up of “simple girls” and “Katie girls” and then said “your girl is lovely Hubbell” to Big and then he said “I don’t get it” and then she said “and ya never did” and then Carrie walked away like a BOSS

Neither for me. I must say, though, that a year after a painful break up, I met up with my ex. We met because he needed a tutor to explain McCarthyism and he’s a direct descendant of Francisco Franco.

My Mom loved this movie and Barbara Streisand. She would pick me up from school, drag me to the Matinee Streisand movies, then race home to fix my Dad dinner. I've been missing my Mom so much lately.

I'm here because I am missing my mom. She passed away a couple months ago. I remember seeing this with her and my Dad at the theater when I was 12. She and I were a blubbering mess by the end. Memories. The song always makes me cry.
This is one of those movies that really make you think about those important things about couples. The relationships and the type of people with whom we can or not end our days.

Here are few other classic b&w suggestions- Wuthering Heights (1939), Jane Eyre (1943), Camille (1936) & West Side Story (1961).. the last one is a real tearjerker

I've always had a thing for Redford, what a gorgeous man, btw, Barbra reminds of Lady Gaga in some scenes.
Redford and Streisdan were great together. Saw the movie in theater when it came out and Was in middle of a breakup myself. First time seeing since then. It was hard to watch then and now. But really good movie

I don't think most of us end up with the love of our lives. We may say it to convince ourselves and our partner but we really didn't.
Magic movie Redford divine loved the music
People are who they are - you can either accept that and be with them or not accept that and not be with them. But if you can't accept people as they are and try to be with them in hopes of converting them into what you want them to be - you are sentencing yourself and the partner into a lifetime of tumult and sadness.

ter far - my take is that he was in love, but the reason left was that it became to hard for him to cope with the very thing he fell in love with her for. He wrote once that everything came easy to him, and I think he longed for those days because it meant he didn’t have to work for anything. He became jaded and basically gave up because it’s easier to let go than fight for something real. He gave up and for that I pity him.

but he was all about how things look and had no real strong opinions on anything and she was strong on everything, who wants a guy like that? not me just cuz guys might look nice doesnt mean they really are inside plus i dont find him attractive anyway, never did. wrong generation, class of 1973 here.
patrea lynn I think you've misjudged him. Yes he came from a monied back ground, but he admired her for her views, but as he said, she just pushed too hard, and his comment "you had them in your hand, you should have laughed" was incredibly insightful and showed a mental maturity that she just didn't have.
@@markchampion5420 I think he just wanted to be non-political. He didn't have strong opinions opinions the way she did. He admired her for her views, but when push came to shove he wasn't willing to risk his own career to defend her and her friends from the HUAC, and that was really what ended things.
I agree with Mark that Hubble had an emotional maturity. Katie was all passion n was aggressive in her opinions which by the way I see a lot in myself too but Hubble was a perfect match for her... He was practical n realistic as against Katie who was idealistic... n together they could've bn a force to reckon with n they were for awhile... He didn't run away from her... He was just more mature emotionally n mentally to see that things won't change ever n instead of clashing with her about their opinions every other day, he gracefully drifted away... I'm from the 90s generation n though I empathized a lot with Streisand's character, I fell hard for Robert Redford... He was a lot more complicated person than he allowed himself to be revealed... and there were so many scenes in the movie which made me question our ideas about love and friendship and the quality of being human x

@@nancyhey1012 You're right :) He should have. But as I said that this is what I learned that we're all flawed because we're humans. Honestly I'm more like Katie myself n this made me look hard at myself from Hubble's perspective... from the perspective of someone who wasn't making fun of her for her views like his friends were doing but he was just asking her "not to push too hard" because in the end things have a way of getting neutralized on a social and political level... the only damage that they cause is that they end up destroying you as a person. I think he tried in his own way to make her understand that because of his love for her but she was too strong-headed to change and yet at the same time her love for him was stronger than the rocks... That's why I loved this movie... They're both great lovely humans, had a huge amount of respect and love for each other yet they were both flawed.
