  • HJC RPHA 11 Helmet Review - A few weeks ago I got myself a new premium helmet to use on my Panigale as my old Shoei is getting a little long in the tooth. I've gone for the light and stylish RPHA11 from HJC. I've not had an HJC helmet before, is it any good and how does it stack up against my other premium lids from the likes of Arai and Shoei? G’day Missenden Flyer, partly on your advice I purchased one and I’m not disappointed. My previous four helmets have been Arais and Shoeis. This is the best helmet I’ve ever worn. Top quality construction and excellent value with a pinlock and dark visor also included. I love the operation of the visor, this is important to me as I don’t ride a lot with the visor fully down. I ride a CB1300S.

    Read all these comments and various results,owning quite a few premium brands worn daily i would say the rpha11 is up there with the best.Using several bikes as a test for them . Some naked ,some with fairing,one adv with screen.The hjc is a relatively quiet lid. Definitely better at higher speeds as it seems to cut through the air better,that impressed i went and bought a hjc rpha 70,the 11 is better out the two by far,6 hours on the bike and much less fatigue for sure.The sizing is on the small side and definitely need to go up one size.The vents actually work well on this helmet.Think im going to buy another 11 as good deals about if not bothered about colour.
    Great video Andy,thanks.

    So many people say this helmet isn't noisy, but it most definitely is, especially sounds that come in through the neck area, my first impression even at slow speeds was I could hear noises my bike was making that I've never heard before with another helmet. I will say it cuts through the wind well and is very stable and doesn't cause nearly as much strain on my neck and shoulders as a result of the aeros and how light it is, but quiet it is not. This helmet had me thinking I should wear earplugs even riding around town which is not a thought I ever really had before

    • @RAM-sz5uq
      @RAM-sz5uq 2 роки тому

      I found this too! I was thinking maybe because I have a naked so not leaning forward enough as it is more aimed at sports riding but leaning didn't make much difference. After some experimenting I found tucking one on my neck garments (have a few layers for for reasons) under the strap kind of resolved it, the jury is still out. Seems that the noise is coming in from the chin curtain. Hope this helps

      @demetriospapavasiliou8167 2 роки тому +1

      @@RAM-sz5uq other than that issue tho, after using it for a full season, by far the best helmet I've ever owned. I think having less weight and bulk in the chin area also really helps reduce neck fatigue. By far the most comfortable helmet I've had for the neck and shoulders

    Great choice I got the rpha10+ 6 months ago and love it it's so comfy and great ventilation, I wanted to replace my kbc with a shoei but they just didn't feel a comfy fit for me. So glad I went for the hjc only down side Is without ear plugs it's pretty loud. I think you'll be happy with it.

    Nice review mate, glad you done one on this, zero wind noise on video with the visor closed, but still hear the bike. Cheaper now too so I may well get one as I just bought my first sport bike, nothing as nice as yours, but a lovely 2k E1 ZX9r.

    I have the RAPHA 11 Spicho Helm, struggled immensely to get a shop that had any in, very limited choice here in Western Australia. I ended up buying from FC-Moto Germany couldn't be more happier with the helmet. Its very light and the air flow is amazing through the vents. When you ride in 35 Deg weather in the summer, good air flow is a must. Good vision and love the choice if visors, something you quite often pay extra with other brands. The fit on the RAPHA is a size smaller, I researched this a lot and tried my normal size on to confirm before buying. Its my second HJC helmet, I tried different brands on before going back to HJC, it just seems to fit my head shape better. By the way the RAPHA is pronounced as a word not letters, good video keep them coming.

    Just bought one, I'm properly hampster cheeked as well, it seems to fit well otherwise, no pressure points just wearing it round the house for 15-20 mins, hoping the cheek pads give a bit over time, vents look like they will work great on my VFR, bought for £235 of ebay including 3 visors, clear light smoked and a dark smoked one for 'track day' use, no problem fitting glasses either as you say, just wish I had a decent day now to roadtest it, can't wait, thanks for the great reviews, always helpful.

    Bought an PRHA 11 (new) two days ago for £170 from an eBay motorcycle gear store. Absolutely thrilled with the finish and feel of the lid as well as the spec. Couple things to add: 1) this helmet is longer back-to-front than my previous Shoei helmets (NXR & Quest), hence I suspect will be fogging less and 2) It has a surprisingly low SHARP safety test rating - looks like side impact zones are made out of cardboard (right zone has THE lowest possible "black" rating). It is a 3* out of 5.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 років тому

      Wow, good price...but bad news on that Sharp rating - never too sure how much credence to give to those (helmets could be made just to pass the test!) but one assumes they know what they're doing, a higher score would be nicer....

    Good first impressions review TMF! I've owned a Rpha10 and from my experience with time you see why it's cheaper than other premium helmets, it doesn't wears good for long time, for example it happened to my HJC that the rubber that surrounds the the lower part of the helmet went off. It's main pro like you say it's visibility. It's a good product but not the best in my opinion or from my experience. I now own a Schuberth and I'm loving it so far, it's light, less noisy than other brands and it's German made so I expect with time it wears good, let's see.

    Hello Mr Flyer! I've had my Rpha11 for a month or so and I love it! In sizing I would say it's the same as Arai. Even the shape is the same. The bottom surface is a bit "sticky" to make it stay if you leave the lid on the bikeseat. Clever! And there's another ventilation possibility on the inside just in front of the riders mouth. :-)

    I'm a big fan of drop-down internal smoked visors. You get the benefit of a smoked visor (legally) and can flip them up almost instantly when required without having to open the outer visor. I wouldn't even consider a helmet without this facility. OK dark outer visors may look cool, but no-one is actually going to think you're a GP rider on his day off!.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 років тому

      Very true - Have you read the (I think) Arai report on the weakness they (allegedly) introduce to a part of the helmet that needs to be strong? I don't necessarily agree with that by the way....I do have other helmets with the flip down shield...

    • @davidbesant
      @davidbesant 7 років тому

      TheMissendenFlyer Yes I don't doubt there will be some compromise in the shell design to accommodate the internal visor, but the lids still have to pass the safety tests. I admit there will extra weight involved to get the equivalent strength, which is probably why they are not the natural choice for racers or track day enthusiasts. But for the road rider, drop-down visors are a good solution.

    I recently moved from an RPHA 10+ which I truly loved, the vision up is the best around. I needed to trade it because I had used it for quite a few years. I went to the AGV K5-S and it is terrible for vision up, especially as soon as you tuck into a corner. So much so, I'm now trying to find a 'second helmet' and it's going to be going back to the RPHAs

    Thank you for the review, I've owned this model of helmet for a year now and unfortunately for me it's been a disaster! Watch out for the visor cracking around the latch mechanism used to lock the visor, also certainly in my case the paint finish hasn't been as durable as I would have liked and my helmet has scratched easily, certainly compared with other brands I've previously used! You are correct it's certainly light weight and quiet, I also believe the interior padding feels plush compared to other top brands!

    I have an RPHA ST, which has the same metal latch on the visor, I keep getting cracks in the visor where this screws on, so keep an eye on that. It might just be mine that has a problem and it's been looked at under warranty, but it's worrying. The IS17 uses a plastic latch and I know quite a few people who have all used this without issue. Including my partner's IS17, I must have bought 4 or 5 HJC lids over the years though because they're alright, and the ones I've replaced have been through crash testing or age rather than any kind of major fault.

Since you've ridden the major competitors in that segment (S1000R, MT-10, Super Duke R) and the Aprilia seems to get rave reviews or win most naked bike comparisons. Hi! A little late commenting on your helmet. I just got the RPHA 70, hoping for a light, quiet and quality helmet. Most of the reviews on it compare it to the RPHA 11, so I'd be interested in your review of the 70 should you ever have the opportunity to try it out. For me, so far so good. I've been a modular helmet guy for years, so this is my first foray into full face. It takes a little getting used to, but I think I prefer it. Your thoughts?

    I saw other unboxing videos on this helmet and i noticed that it came with the dark smoke visor instead of the light tinted one that you have. I wonder if that's some kind of legislation you have there in the UK that doesn't allow that dark one to come in your HJC helmets. I'm from Portugal and i saw other videos from spain, japan, germany, italy, france... all with the really dark visor. My shoei has a transitional visor which is a major selling point. Do HJC offer this? Not ever having to swap visors is a major advantage and when you're out in the sun and it suddenly gets very overcast... it's very handy.

    Does this have recesses inside the helmet for intercom speakers like the R-PHA 70 does ... actually looking at both helmets .
    This vents extremely well which I´m all for despite reports of it being extra noisy due to this, but has no sun visor but I can live without that , with the 70 there´s still allot of uncertainty about how well it actually vents as they have sacrificed the rear exhaust ports (the critics are saying it was to save costs and are skeptical) and implemented some system that is supposed to let the air out the same way it comes in from the top front port... how this is supposed to work while air is being rammed in is beyond me... There´s almost no reviews in English to date as this is not yet available in the US ... great review but was hoping you would also chat a bit about the extra visibility through the visor due to the extra cut outs beside the cheeks .. supposedly a huge help when swivelling the head around to check blind spots ??

    It might be light; it might be good looking and made out of quality materials; however it only scores Three stars out of five on the sharp testing site - (helmet safety scheme = sharp.dft.gov.uk) scores remarkably bad on side impacts . I have a MT revenge for a fraction of the price of the HJC and it scores Five stars on the sharp safety site. Maybe it is not as flashy but I know that my head is in one of the safest helmets money can buy. I don't know what other riders think but I choose safety before looks; and having said that I think my MT looks not bad either. Anyway; good review as per normal TMF. Thanks

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 років тому +1

      I agree safety over looks wins - but three stars ain't that bad and also the Sharp Tests are very specific, the helmets that pass with 5 stars are good at passing those particular tests, which may or may not be relevant in real world crash situations.....let's hope we don't have to put that to the test. Anyway, obviously you do what you think is best and get the lid that makes you feel safest. Thanks for the kind words and all the best - TMF

      I have to share some bad news TMF, my helmet came to the test last night when I was riding home. A car driver who claimed not to have seen me (and I was wearing hi-vis) knocked me of my bike as he entered the roundabout as I was taking the exit. Impossible to avoid him and I was send to the deck as a result. I was lucky; one of those quick response ambulance car was on the scene as by miracle ! ! I was taking to hospital for further tests and besides some pain in the right side of the rib cage I am fine (serious damage to my bike; plus all the palaver with the insurance to follow). My helmet had to neutralise a side impact with the tarmac and fortunately did a great job. My leathers with shoulder and elbow protectors plus my Kevlar jeans and alpine boots took care of the rest. I can only give a good advise for our fellow bikers; wear your protective kit at all times, I just found out first hand; how important this can turn out to be.
