For me when teppei died my reaction was actually thank for your service not beacause of him dying (I had no care for him in the story) but because it meant that it was time to go into the delusion factory and meet Scaramouche for the first time in game. (I was not playing in 1.1 for that ancient event I started playing in the mid 3.x patchs .) I got introduced into the game by friends and one of them actually made me become a future wanderer main long before I started playing, so my friends told me lots of spoilers (by watching various game cutscences together from youtube) so I knew that he would be in the delusion factroy. so I thanked Teppei for being a convenent plot device before running away.
Oh also I have a friend whos nickname is Silver and silver was his favourite npc in the game and he even did a silver cosplay in 4.1 the patch right before npc silver died

I'm right there with you on teppei, I've got a lot of trouble remembering characters unless they really stand out in character design. I couldn't remember who ganyu was at all through the liyue archon quest because she's not really imposing or visually striking, however I could remember Keqing after only meeting her once at the ballista, she's demanding, in change with a distinct voice, with a purple that pops out. Teppei is an actual NPC we don't spend time with. I had a bigger reaction to fighting the futui given my gleefully on sight mentality when it comes to fighting them.
However generally when we see Navia we are also seeing M & S, so by the time they die we get a lot of time with them so we can not only feel their death through Navia but we do feel something for them specifically.

  • @Kiwi-Araga

Teppei suffers because of the bad execution of the entire Inazuma AQ. I f we spent more time with him, or if in the short time had had did things to appreciate and know him better, his death would have had a bigger impact. It's even harder to achieve that when the character dies because of bad decisions.

I'd say one of the problems with Teppei is that he knew what was killing him, and still kept using it. His death is entirely on himself, he didn't even sacrifice himself, he just died by his own actions. If it had been written well, they could have shown how losing his Vision affected him and led to him wanting to use the Delusion, instead of just mentioning it. Could have shown him instinctively trying to use the elements only to remember he doesn't have his Vision.

Legitimately a Saurian who's only real lines are audible Rawr and Gawr made me feel more sad Teppei

Basically we knew nothing about Teppei, all we knew is that he's devoted to his "work", but there's just so little time to connect with him. Navia's bodyguards were natural in showing more things about themselves through Navia herself. The way they cared about her or reason with her antics, they felt more alive than Teppei who was just there for some reason like a cardboard cutout. Probably half of the problem lies in the way they portrayed Kokomi and Gorou in that quest. Instead of showing how resistance really operates they discarded it in the worst way possible. So Teppei also could have gotten his development if they showed him similar way through Kokomi how Silver and Melus were shown through Navia, but nope. And now we only remember him as that annoying guy who forced a swordsman to do an archery challenge and supposedly died at the end. Well, Inazuma story quest was rushed after Mond and Liyue. They either didn't have a good main scenario writer at the time, or just couldn't finish everything on time and had to scrap like 40% of the plot there. You can tell that both might be the case bc Sumeru was improvement of writing after Inazuma, and in 2.0 trailer there was a scene where Traveler sinks in the water (which never happened). Theories say that the whole "travel to Inazuma" part was cut out there. Anyway, i think after Inazuma Hoyo started taking story more seriously bc many people enjoy the story aspect of the game, and people who don't enjoy it can be even more harsh on it. Like me, ahaha.
Honestly it's hard for me to connect with npcs or even main characters, so i rarely cry, unless it's shown in a very good way. On my memory there's only one time i cried for side character death and it was bc it was brilliantly done in particular webcomic. That side character was shown only once, main character talked to her only once. They were just strangers to each other, but just a few chapters later he finds her halfdead without legs and arms, she couldn't see bc she was blinded and there was a hole in her stomach. There's no way of saving her, so she showed mc her memories of the culprit. And she was portrayed as stoic person who accepted her defeat and death. Until the very last moments, she suddenly started crying and said she didn't want to die. After that she passes out. Man, thr sheer hopelessness of that scene really moved me to tears. Like i wouldn't care if she died heroically, but at the very end she showed her human side, which was amazing i believe. In some sense, she was similar to Teppei, bc how little screen time she had, but author managed to do everything for readers to remember her, not many characters get that luxury i think. Anyway, sorry for the wall of text. Nice video ++

You know, I feel like Teppei could have benefitted with being personally connected to a playable character just like Silver and Melus. I'm just spitballing here, but they could have easily made him Gorou's like... right hand man, or made him a friend of Kokomi or something like that. That way, if he died, even if us players wouldn't care, we would still feel for Gorou/Kokomi/ whatever playable character you want to attach Teppei to

I'm not saying Teppei is written well, either, but Melus and Silver are mostly just comic relief as an extension of Navia. Melus also serves as a vehicle for Navia's background. But I never had the impression that they were people unto themselves (or at least Silver certainly isn't.) They're basically Arataki Gang members, except Spina di Rosula.

  • @pinkraven7043
    @pinkraven7043 Місяць тому +6

One of the big writing pitfalls that Teppei fell into was just how...Heavy handed they went about presenting his "I'm a soldier and want to help" personality.
It gave off the same vibes as the "I'm retiring in X days" cliche. The moment I heard Teppei speak, red flags were everywhere. And he just kept saying/doing the same thing. It was so obvious he was going to die. That entire part of the AQ, I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop and made jokes when it did.
Melus and Silver may have worked for a few reasons.
There's what you said but also another possible factor. By Fontaine, a majority of players were left feeling secure about "NPCs who are close with playable characters" because of Dunyarzad. They didn't kill her off (opinions vary whether this was the righr call) so surely they wouldn't kill NPCs who are close with the obvious playable character.
That and Melus and Silver had zero red flags surrounding them. Obviously it's cause they didn't get focus like Teppei or Dunyarzad, but that worked in the AQ's favor. The writing didn't play up any death tropes with them, so players were left just seeing them as Navia's quirky "family" who are there to help her and lighten the mood. Like the NPCs that show up in Events.
A great way to get your audience invested in a character is to make them feel secure and believe the character(s) will be around even after the conflict. Make them think things like "I want to see more of them later."
For example, I really wanted to see Melus and Silved in future Fontaine content with Navia. So it SUCKED for me when they died.
And the same thing just happened with Natlan 🫠
Teppei? I had no hopes for him.
I'd personally be interested in a Teppei-Deconstruction video. It's the first time I've heard the opinion that he contradicts Inazuma's AQ and I'd like to hear the argument.

the NPCs that I really felt attached to, and I genuinely wanted them to live and to have a happy ending were

I also want to add that the framing of Teppei's introduction on 2.0 was pretty suspicious, like why is this random NPC guy so eager to show us around and take us to Sangonomiya? At the end of act 2 I was so sure that either Teppei was the traitor they mentioned (who in the end was an even more random missable NPC called Nathan) or he had red flags and was gonna die in the plot. The continuous focus on the next update made it so 1. he was insufferable to me because he kept comparing himself to Traveler more than being a real buddy, and it didn't make sense to me that my Lumine would be SO PISSED for this rando, especially after world quest character Kazari (Hanachirusato) having a much sadder death, 2. the red flags were so obvious and so boring that I couldn't connect to him as I could tell he was gonna die. Honestly, I would have rather if Teppei had been the traitor instead of what we got. You did this to yourself, bro. You took the fucking delusion.

Even if Inazuma's story were better, *to me*, Teppei still wouldn't have been likeable. Beside the fact we technically barely know him (at least on screen) and apparently we didn't even complete lots of missions together, he's shown like he's a bestie, a cliché shonen boy looking at Traveler with a determined grin and the classical "You better not slack off, I might catch up to you soon!"
And, really, Teppei was the cause of his own downfall. He was so engrossed in his sudden gain of power, so hard focused on the fact he must do some great deeds on the battlefield to think he's useful, that he completely failed to see he was aging fast as f. Even at the very end, I was sighing because really... "It's not surprising that a mysterious weapon of unknown origins would come with its risks" NO SHIT???
If only he would have been a character who had his Vision taken away from him, and tried to feel useful again by accepting this "secret weapon" (that he's still asking for when we meet him as an old guy) because by this time, we knew the consequences of losing a Vision (confusion and partial memory loss)... But no no, he's just some Random Guy™ we meet at the beach and save his butt. He just wants to be stronger for the sake of it, because physically strong = the only mean to be useful in war. He never evolves from that point.
My biggest issue with this character, is that the game is trying hard to show him as a "kind heart", hopeful one with noble ideals. But matter of fact : he's not. He thinks that acting on the battlefield is more important, felt frustrated because wasn't "strong enough", and relied on an unknown weapon to satiate his thirst for glory. His death was so anticlimactic that until I watched another's streamer playthrough, i thought he REALLY had gone sleeping... I searched for him in the village, never found him, until I learned the truth. And worse: there's not even some kind of memorial left in his name. Even VICHAMA got something, an NPC who was there for half an Act, so even less screentime than Teppei.

Teppei's demise kinda felt like a "red shirt" character to me. A character introduced specifically to be killed off later, adding little to the story and often there just to emphasize the potential danger around the important characters. I remember forgetting about Teppei WHILE playing the story because he wasn't that memorable or important to the plot. Meluse and Silver and even Chuychu were fully fleshed out characters that were important to the plot in relation to the "important characters" they were connected to. So when they died, it had major repercussion in the story, along with upsetting the player. My feeling is hoyo intended for Teppei to be a red shirt (they know how to do emotional damage with character deaths, Himeko anyone?), but I think at that point in the game, since it's not the climax before the end of act 1 or the 11 0clock number, they didn't want to present anything too emotionally jarring and build up for the more recent plot lines in Fontain and Natlan. Like in a musical, you don't have your big show stopping 11 o clock number in the middle of act one, you slowly build up to it as the penultimate number in the final act and take your audience by storm then.

I didn't realize the hate for Teppei was so... vehement 😅
I never really thought much of him since Inazuma, true, but I remember at the time people were still riding the "fuck Pallad" train, so I think that saved Teppei from scrutiny, for a while at least.
Edit: And the rest of the Inazuma Archon quest being poorly handled certainly helped spread the blame. 😂

tbh, Teppei death was just the part of bad written story throughout Inazuma conflict. He fought and perished for the wrong reason, which is for the sake of some selfish people who already have their vision confiscated (or threaten to be confiscated) by Shogunate. Something like, "they gonna rob our dream...blablabla." Well, ofc Watatsumi people also have the right to be mad because their deity's remnant was harvested for its lingering power. But I clearly remember an NPC in Narukami Island saying that he didn't care about the vision hunt decree since it won't affect him or most of Inazuma people because the main problem in Inazuma is the Sakoku decree which made Inazuma a closed country and could effect their economy. Imo, he was right.
Back to unlucky Teppei, he's so desperate to gain an instant super power, then accessed the Delusion while ignoring his General order. Well, I kinda understand why Teppei disregard Gorou. lol, Then we knew the rest of the story. But the worst is when the Traveler completely blind in rage over Teppei demise as if he's our lover or something. Cih. I still hate that story so much to this day every time someone mention "Teppei".

Let's not even compare Teppi to Melus and Silver. Even Tadhla's death in some random world quest was way better than Teppei for me.
When Teppei died, i kid you not, i had to double check to my friends who played the game longer than i did to confirm he's dead-ded. Traveler getting so angry over Teppei was puzzling to me. All those time i was asking in my head "why should i care for this NPC guy i barely know and spent time with???" Everytime he's on the screen all he talked about was his work and the delusion thing. Even when i was doing the quest, Teppei was never really there in the background of the quest like Tadhla or Melus and Silver did. Genuinely, why should I care that he died.

Personally I didn't really feel much? It felt like we'd barely seen her before she died. More screen time would have made more of an impact. I also felt like it was incredibly cheep how it was immediately used as justification for Chasca to get her ancient name. Idk, it immediately took me out of the grieving process and made her feel like a plot device.
