This must be Selenay just before the battle with Ancar. He had killed Herald Kris, and Queen's Own Herald Talia had nearly been tortured to death before she knew her message got through and she attempted suicide by severe sedative overdose. They managed to pull her to safety, but she was still very battered. Everybody thought she wouldn't pull through because of her wounds. The position of Queens Own is meant for a guiding friend and a place to find emotional support. Now, you love your Queen and the Queen's best friend is the Queen's Own. The Heralds are well known for being unable to resist a call for help. Now do you see why Selenay would cheerfully go charging in the vanguard or set Ancar on fire to burn him alive - slowly?

@@draguta8995 unfortunately they are due to having little money and being too far from a library to keep walking there. Would love to read more but im just not able to.
"My army like an eager hound lies waiting my command". Cue a mighty roar from said army. They're willing to fight for her because though she's bent on revenge, she's still a good and caring leader to them.
It's been decades since I read that trilogy but on reading your comment, I am reminded how angry the Valdemaran forces were in the book. While for the regular army, it was general 'us vs them' mentality of an army, but for the heralds with the queen it was far more personal as they all knew the Queen's Own, Talia.
The song is from the three book series "The Heralds of Valdemar", the first book is named "Arrows of the Queen" by Mercedes Lackey. The song was written from Queen Selenay's perspective after discovering that her 'Queens Own'; Herald Talia, closest and most trusted advisor/confidant to the Queen; had been tortured and raped repeatedly by the traitor King Ancar's orders after going there with her partner Herald Kris to conduct a marriage proposal for the Queens daughter Elspeth. When they retrieved Talia from the Kings guards, they discovered her feet had been shattered as well as numerous other bones and a handprint had been seared into her flesh by magic. And since Talia was an Empath with incredible strength, the mental trauma severely outweighed the physical torture due to her being forced to listen and feel their pleasure toward her pain. Selenay was furious that they'd brutalized her much-beloved Herald and murdered her cousin Kris in cold blood, and immediately summoned as much force as she could to stamp out Ancar's forces before he could take her Kingdom by surprise. Because she was also a Herald while being Queen, she was forced to ignore Talia's suffering until after the battle instead of going into the Vanguard herself and slitting every throat she came across like she desperately wanted to. The army she gathered was INCREDIBLY angry with what had befallen Herald Talia (poor kid was loved by literally EVERYONE she met in Valdemar) and sent word to literally every Herald they could and summoned every man that could hold either a bow or sword or wield a Mage-Gift or Heraldic Gift to battle. Within a fortnight Selenay had almost three thousand men and women ready to wreck the Kingdom that had hurt Talia and tried to usurp their Monarch. The whole series itself is a fantastic read, 9000/10 would definitely recommend. Especially if your into Fantasy and Kingdom stories like me.
This song never fails to bring a tear to my eye and alight hate in my heart, the sort of fiery rage that burns both the possessor and the cause of it. It is far too close to my family's history and rings too true to my blood.
I just finished Arrows of the Queen for what feels like the hundredth time. I listened to the music first and got absorbed into the world of the Heralds and Companions. I do not regret a single moment I have spent weeping into my tea with the entire series from Vanyel to Talia to Elspeth.
I have never read any of the books. I dunno who this is, or who she's marching against, but fuck me, I would march with her. I have never heard hatred, rage and lust for vengeance expressed in a song so well. This song is awesome.
Yes. It is songs like this that make me firmly believe that filk is the best music genre in existence. (For sure, it's better than anything I've heard on the radio. Even the filk songs that aren't as great as this one tend to be more expressive, more original, and sound less like the singer is destroying their voice than the average song on the radio.)

In case anyone is wondering about the line ‘it’s just as well i’m not the one who calls the storm of fire’ is a general reference to FireStarting as a magical gift, but probably a specific reference to Lavan Firestorm from ‘Brightly Burning’ (another Valdemar book). He wins an earlier war with Karse an earns the appellation ‘Firestorm’ by unleashing his gift and incinerating the opposing army, an entire forest, and unfortunately himself.
@@FrostPDP As I recall Griffon was good setting things on fire, even when it wasn't readily set aflame. But Lavan is the notable example for "calling the storm of fire" as he had some difficulty /not/ setting stuff on fire. -- My point is about what the line is referencing, not why they won a war or not.
@@jnharton I...Don't know if it was clear what I was saying, or what you're saying? I feel like there's a disconnect. Let me try to restate my point: Lavan *is* the historically notable example of a powerful Firestarter, but this song is specifically about the battle between Valdemar and Hardorn, from Selenay's perspective. Griffon destroyed a lot of Ancar's summoned demons, and also targeted their primary mage. I don't think he compared to Lavan in terms of power, but he was still critical to Valdemar's survival that day. I think the line in the song specifically references Griffon and his gift to call down the fire; and how Selenay is glad she doesn't have that gift because she'd use it aggressively, perhaps *too* aggressively.
Lavan appears in the book "Brightly Burning" and the line in this song *LITERALLY* references Lavan's companion (Kalira) being killed and Lavan losing control of his gift and unleashing "the storm of fire" that destroyed an entire Karsite army at the battle for the pass of Burning Pines.
I just realised that "it's just as well, I'm not the one who calls the storm of fire" is a reference to Lavan Firestorm from Brightly Burning - whose fire is literally controlled by anger.
@@renyer4429 It can be both. - That said Lavan Firestorm is a historical figure, at this point in the series chronology, who was responsible for literally turning a battlefield into the enemy’s funeral pyre. He singlehandedly ends a war between Valdemar and Karse by incinerating the entire opposing army, the forest around them and himself.
Beautiful artwork, gives more towards the "fury towards evil enemies", a sword weilding song from a Warrior who protects her own kingdom with a song of a cadence rythym, as we sing our own songs to "fight monsterous enemies" who plagueour lives. We, ourselves, can win battles, with your written lyrics, as so we dream our dreams, and fight our daily battles.
love this and would equally love clashing version coming from the other side like two clashing sides singing their side of the story from their perspective!!!
well the clashing version would be about "give me power, die so i may use your blood to power my spells, while i rape and torture young women to further my tyrannical and murderous rule of the country i claimed by patricide." Ancar was a seriously Mucked up personality and literally drained his countries magical energy to the point of ecological disaster. other than that, yes it would be interesting to see an opposing song :D

With how you tortured, killed and lied revealed to them this day--- By all the stars that ever shone, By the Maker, by Theirin's blood For my parents and my Cousland 's Own--- I swear that you will pay! Quarantine make me crazy
Funny you mention that. I was just looking this up to listen to after something that happened in a dnd session haha. Although my character is an arcane trickster with no army, but the fury for vengence is still there.
I know my kind isn't welcome here, but... this song is so full of melodramatic anger of the "make you watch evil laughter scrolling down your screen for a full minute and then crash your game" kind but from a good person rather than an evil one, and I haven't listened to this song since Deltarune came out, and I can't help thinking of a different hurt Kris and imagining any one of their royal family members taking revenge on the humans who hurt them, and singing this!
I've read many English poems but I've never seen anyone use the rhyme "despoil - foil" anywhere. Also I didn't even know the meaning of those words before, despite reading more than 2000 English books. Just amazing piece of art, what a song. An emotion of rage and vengeance here is expressed so clearly and with such vehemence that... I always start rooting for the character right away.
I’m now imagining the villain, slightly shorter then most, kinda lean yet handsome, pale, blond with short hair, with bright almost whitish blue eyes, and wearing Roman military gear with the muscle cuirass and golden wreath upon his head. Possessed of an infectious charisma, and can go from a soft spoken, sophisticated voice to loud and commanding, yet retaining grace all the same, ruthless, deviously cunning and intelligent, impeccable manners and seemingly always calm, collected and in control, taking insults towards his character, even the most vicious insults, seemingly in jest and amusement. Even when the tide is against him, he is seemingly possessed of a calm, almost jovial nature. He is also cruel, sadistic and possessed of a complete and utter belief in his superiority, so much so that attacks on his character and his supposed superiority do not phase, for what would a living God have to care about petty insults? Even with the army of the Queen upon his door, he remains calm, even facing death he has no fear, for tormenting this once noble, loving, calm, merciful and kind soul, and reducing her into a rage filled shell, consumed with the need for revenge, for killing but one insignificant Herald, is such an exquisite amusement to him. He has no fear or her, or her pathetic army of barbarians, for he know he will win, she does not know what he has in store for her and her army of halfwits and goatswilling inbred swine, and the mortified look of pathetic despair, indignation and rage that will be cast upon her beautiful face when he wins will be a joyful spectacle to witness. And if she does win, by some miracle, he’ll never give her the satisfaction of seeing himself beg, but will merely mock her for how she failed to save her beloved friend. And if this Queen saves him to torture him, then seeing her reduced to even more of a shell of her former self, and becoming the very thing she despised, will make the pain, even in Hell, so much more worth it. For to make even the Demons in Hell disgusted with him, is an achievement not granted to many, and only worthy of someone who was born with the Devil in him, and who was the chosen of Hell itself.
really like the song and that army like an eager hound, the way she sung it really threw me off guard and I had to go back and re listen cause damn I was about to say nope to a good song
No, it's filk. In some filk communities, one way to use the word filk is literally as a verb, to filk, meaning to make a parody of a song. Whatever changes you want to make to this song, go ahead; just as long as you don't try to claim it as entirely yours, nobody should mind, and in fact most filkers will encourage you.
This is amazing. both the song and visuals. But, being a Fan of David Weber's 'Honor Harrington' novels, I wonder what it would be like set in that universe. Queen Elizabeth of Manticore singing her defiance of Manpower and Mesa. Perhaps Honor herself singing in the Queen's stead? I don't know. I can see it my head, but I don't have the skills to make my vision real. Perhaps you could accept the gauntlet?
As yet, I only know the Honor Harrington universe from a couple of songs by a group called Echo's Children. But from the little I do know, I think that is a great idea. I've always wanted to try my hand at songwriting, but I never seem to be able to come up with lyrics that match the tune I came up with, or a tune to match the lyrics I wrote. Maybe modifying this song to fit a different story would work better... I'll keep this in mind for when I finally get around to reading the Honor Harrington books.

Anyone else thinks that this could be a revenge song after the cost of the crown
No, this is Selenay vs. Ancar, while Cost of the Crown is more general queenly angst
I'd like to think Cost of the Crown is the now elderly queen reflecting her reign while this is more shortly after her taking the throne, and a neighboring kingdom tried to take away her legitimacy.

I just wish this song was in skyrim
This is after "Trio".
i know not if this woman is the queen or the head of the queens army but she is one determined person. and whoever this man is she want dead he never should have done whatever he did to her friend
Here's Battle Dawn- Here's Battle Dawn- Queen Selanay is singing before her army is to meet her enemy's army. Ancor has killed one of her cousins, Herald Kris, and tortured Queen's Own Herald Talia when they were attending a peaceful dinner, and after killing his own father to take his throne. Ancor's intention is to kill Selanay and take her daughter as a forced wife to take over both his country and Valdemar.
That's Queen Selenay and the SoB she's talking about is Ancar
she doesn't say her enemy is a man, seem to be plenty of women running around with weapons.
In this case the enemy is indeed a man however.

All explained in the trilogy, Arrows of the Queen, Arrows Flight, Arrows Fall by Mercedes Lackey
The slain King was a friend to the Queen as well and the mentioned Heralds were paying a friendly visit to the palace unaware of the Princes evil machinations which they got caught up in. Ancer was a nasty piece of work.

seems to be sung from the point of Queen Selenay, from the final book in the Arrows trilogy, Arrow's Fall,
Exactly correct.
IIRC, Griffon was active at this time. Not quite Lavan, but still a potent Firestarter. In fact, I'm fairly sure he's a huge reason they won this one.
Let me try to restate my point:
Lavan *is* the historically notable example of a powerful Firestarter, but this song is specifically about the battle between Valdemar and Hardorn, from Selenay's perspective.
@@FrostPDP The disconnect is on your end I'm afraid. I disagree, in case that wasn't obvious. Namely I don't think the song is referring to Griffon.
Just finished book 2 of the Arrows trilogy and now I have a sense of what's going to happen and I am TERRIFIED in the best way.
I wish everybvody that listened to this would Read the books if they haven't. They'd totally understand so much more as to why Selenary is so angry
I just realised that "it's just as well, I'm not the one who calls the storm of fire" is a reference to Lavan Firestorm from Brightly Burning - whose fire is literally controlled by anger.
or of Griffon, since he is a part of her army
@@renyer4429 Oh yeah. Forgot about him. That... that kind of makes more sense... oops?
@@renyer4429 It can be both. - That said Lavan Firestorm is a historical figure, at this point in the series chronology, who was responsible for literally turning a battlefield into the enemy’s funeral pyre. He singlehandedly ends a war between Valdemar and Karse by incinerating the entire opposing army, the forest around them and himself.
Excellent Irish Melody from one lackey to another great job!
I must count for at least 100 views so far. I love songs about revenge but this is pure art.
Well this song has totally sold me on the books
This is my second favorite song from Heralds, Harpers, and Havoc. My favorite is Cost of the Crown.(see a pattern there? I love the Queen!)
love this and would equally love clashing version coming from the other side like two clashing sides singing their side of the story from their perspective!!!
well the clashing version would be about "give me power, die so i may use your blood to power my spells, while i rape and torture young women to further my tyrannical and murderous rule of the country i claimed by patricide." Ancar was a seriously Mucked up personality and literally drained his countries magical energy to the point of ecological disaster. other than that, yes it would be interesting to see an opposing song :D

this is an absolutely AMAZING song!
This was really, really good. .-.
My favorite author of all time does music???? How did I not know this?
I know my kind isn't welcome here, but... this song is so full of melodramatic anger of the "make you watch evil laughter scrolling down your screen for a full minute and then crash your game" kind but from a good person rather than an evil one, and I haven't listened to this song since Deltarune came out, and I can't help thinking of a different hurt Kris and imagining any one of their royal family members taking revenge on the humans who hurt them, and singing this!
I've discovered that I have a soft spot for this type of ballads
For to make even the Demons in Hell disgusted with him, is an achievement not granted to many, and only worthy of someone who was born with the Devil in him, and who was the chosen of Hell itself.
... You, dear sir, are a born author...

As yet, I only know the Honor Harrington universe from a couple of songs by a group called Echo's Children. But from the little I do know, I think that is a great idea.
