Anne Bonny
Written by Karliene Reynolds (2018)
- | LYRICS |-
Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Oh I’ll tell you a tale of a pirate queen
A she-wolf who reigned the Caribbean Sea
With a pistol-a-ready and a cutlass keen
The villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Born in Ireland scandalously
Bastard daughter
To a prosperous lawyer
Shunned suitor and society
For the love of a pirate boy
So Calico Jack and our Anne Bonny
Passioned lovers
Villainous plunderers
Sailed off for a life of piracy
On his ship, The Revenge, Ahoy
Oh I’ll tell you a tale of a pirate queen
A she-wolf who reigned the Caribbean Sea
With a pistol-a-ready and a cutlass keen
The villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
But this was the 18th century
Where men make knives
And women make wives
So Anne disguised herself to be
A deadly pirate boy
Oh she plundered and murdered and raided the sea
With canons roaring
Pistols warring
She ravaged galleons mercilessly
Oh Anne Bonny
Then a fellow pirate caught a glance
Her naked chest
A woman’s breast
So she drew her cutlass and took a stand
To be Anne the Pirate Queen
Oh I’ll tell you a tale of a pirate queen
A she-wolf who reigned the Caribbean Sea
With a pistol-a-ready and a cutlass keen
The villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
And that’s when Anne met Mary Read
A pirate siren
Female tyrant
Together they terrorised the sea
A buccaneering team
Oh they plundered and murdered and raided the sea
With canons roaring
Pistols warring
They ravaged galleons mercilessly
Anne and Mary Read
On October 1720
Gold they struck
So the boys got drunk
An easy opportunity
For a ship of British marines
Anne and Mary fought alone
With cutlass flying
Pistols firing
They fought hard for their ocean throne
But lost their victory
And so the crew were captured
Thrown in prison
Death by hanging
But Anne Bonny was pardoned
For her belly held a child
So She paid her Jack a visit
And this she said
With no tear shed
‘If you had fought like a man
you wouldn’t’ be about to die like a dog”
And she turned on her heel
Walked out of the door
And vanished
Into legend
Oh I’ll tell you a tale of a pirate queen
A she-wolf who reigned the Caribbean Sea
With a pistol-a-ready and a cutlass keen
The villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
Villainous, infamous Anne Bonny
God I can imagine a ship of pirates singing the story of Anne Bonny drunkenly after a night of plundering, letting it be a lesson to anyone who hears it without realising that the handsome man in the corner of the room smirking at every inconsistency and telling them exactly what Anne said to Jack is her.
What do you think Jack would've said to Anne ?
@@taleaingmire8120 I think Jack would've been too shocked after the bombshell line "If you had fought like a man, you wouldn't be about to die like a dog." Just mouth to the floor.
@@dododoobirdowo1916 she was a complete badass to the very end. she picked up when he dropped. i think he might've had huge respect for her when she kept going
@@taleaingmire8120 Oh no, she didn't pick up when he dropped. She just continued what she was already doing.
after a night of r@pe and plunder i doubt they would care to sing a story about some phoney female
I’m writing a book featuring Anne Bonney and Mary Reed! This song just captured their fighting spirit! Wow Karliene, you’ve done it again!
That's awesome!
Let me know when you release it. I'd love to check it out.
I've always been surprised more hasn't been done with either "character" (I think Mary Read's pre-pirate history is even more fascinating) - they seem so ripe for wonderful tales.
What's the name of it and when will it be published I'd love to read it thank you
A friend of mine wrote a book... “The Pirate Trial of Anne Bonny and Mary Read.”
Please tell me you’ve finished it!
Love how you incorporated What do You do with a Drunken Sailor!
Thought I was the only one who noticed!
Thank you! I knew I recognized the tune but couldn't place it
I didnt even notice it till today lmao. I was just listening to it while working on a school project and happened to notice it XD
You know a song's gonna be good when it starts with "I'll tell you the tale of"
I am literally so obsessed with this song. I didn't even know there was such a woman like Anne Bonny, and now I can't even stop listening to this song. I think it's the spirit of it that gets me going. You have such a beautifully alluring and seductively guttural voice, that makes people want to listen to you. I hope you make more songs with this much depth.
Maria salazar you should look up Grace O’Malley and Ching Shih then.
Also, look up history of Not only Anne Bonnie, but read real background of Bonnie Parker. You might be surprised by similarities
intresting history definetly ^^ and she were badass but still a pirate. I love them but they were laweless criminals. not something to look up to. But its hard not to I think xD
Lycan Thrope for some people, the story itself is a getaway from the real (present) world and provides some excitement. I know I’ve done that many times before.
For more information and jokes look up buzzfeed's ruining history on her
Those notes from "The Drunken Sailor" at the end, though! 😍😍😍
and up she rises!!!
And in the beginning when he drunken pirates sing it.
I commented on another song of yours already but this one totally captured me... As a blood descendant of Anne Bonny, Thank you. I grew up hearing her story from my grandmother who was told the tale from her mother, and so on. This means a lot to know more knew of her fury and power. As scary and intense as she was, Anne was still a woman of passion and life and I'm proud to have her as my ancestor.
I'd love to hear the story that your grandmother told you. Just a thought maybe posting a video what u were told. I was literally thinking yesterday I wonder what happened to Anne. Glad her family tree expanded.
It would take 1000 years and words not invented yet to say how jealous I am.
I can't even begin to wrap my head around how that could be the case given Anne's fate, historically, is entirely unknown. And any family she left behind was left utterly unrecorded. "My gran said her mum said her mum said her mum said" isn't much in the way of verifiable evidence.
@@Blisterdude123Why ? Her father was well known in early Charleston, S.C.
@@edwardcoss6574 "blood descendant of Anne Bonny"
That is to say "of Anne Bonny", specifically.
This sounds like the opening number to a Hamilton style Musical and I need that to exist right now
I would do anything for a Hamilton style musical about Anne Bonny. It has such potential
History is now my favorite type of music
What a story. A heroically villainous pirate captain/Queen that survives all perils, to disappear into legend.
The song creates a movie in you head. Then you want to see a well written and well acted movie with Anne Bonny in the lead role
Piracy is freedom. Anne Bonny is the beautiful pirate queen. I love this song.
I had to suppress the urge to let out a piercing SHRIEK when I saw that you had written a song about my girl Anne Bonny. I just BARELY managed it. XD This was just......fantastic. The rhythm, the grit and fire, you not only told her story in your lyrics, but you emulated what we can guess about her personality PERFECTLY in the sound of the song. You're just utterly remarkable my dear, and I couldn't have hoped for a better person to write a song for our villainous, infamous Anne Bonny.
I'm so thrilled you're excited by this one. It was pure obsession and passion to make this song. Anne Bonny has long been on my song writing to-do list and I'm so happy to finally have her in my library. She's so fascinating isn't she.
It means so much to me that you like it. Thank you. x
She really is fascinating! When I was seeing stuff on Tumblr about the show Black Sails, I was mildly interested, but when I saw Anne was a character on the show, I IMMEDIATELY sought out the first season. There is just something captivating about her story and legacy.
Once again, WELL done my dear. You are enchanting and inspiring as always. You have all of these songs you've written that I wish I could cover, and here you have added another one! XD
You sound just like me! Resisting the urge to scream bcuz Karliene did a song about my favorite pirate. Karliene did an amazing job
Karliene Not just her infamy but Anne Bonny's legend as well. To this day names Anne Bonny's, Mary Read, Shih Ching, and even Grace O'Malley cause Sailors to quake in fear and the seas to shake with anticipation from terror invoked by the She-Wolves of the sea and the true Pirate Queens!
Sirony
Wow, such passion :3
Anne Bonny said this to Jack "but if you fought like a man, you would not be hanged like a dog. "
Thank you
Are you replying to your own comment because you have dementia, are drunk, or are seeking attention? Lmao
@@eclairz9275 I've made that mistake. Surprised myself 😂
@@eclairz9275
Maybe this is the equivalent of bowing after a performance. Sure was difficult typing that comment. Gotta thank yourself for it xD
Wow I can be hard and cold at times but the man was about to be hanged I would have said something comforting.
Wow. Your vocal performance on this one is powerful
miracleofsound Thanks so much Gav :-D
My favourite line is "Oh I'll tell you a tale of a pirate queen"
It’s cool to see two of my favorite UA-camr in the same comment thread
DUET! THIS CALLS FOR A DUET!
Grannie Mael or Anne Bonney? Which of these Celtic daughters of Ireland terrified the British more?
Sure, I may be late for work...but I can spare five minutes to listen to this. And maybe another five minutes to listen to it again. And...oh hell, in for a penny in for a pound, let’s listen to another Karliene song...
Anne Bonny and Mary Read, aka the original tomboys.
You've obviously never heard of shieldmaidens.
@@Ackalan Shield maidens were still very feminine in nature.
@@darthkenobi6726 Strange, that's definitely not what historical sources tells us, but whatever.
As someone who enjoys history, I absolutely adore this song. Not many people talk about Anne Bonny so this was a treat to hear.
The true story of Anne Bonny. 18 to 20 years old. I can’t even imagine how a woman and her mother embarked on this courageous journey.Anne & her mother(Mary)lived the true life of pirates. infamous, pillaging and braving the rough seas. They truly fought hard. The courage, the strength of their character. The world with these two women such a tale to be told. It’s true pregnant with child some say she was pardoned until she had the baby. To this day they don’t know if she got away. So very proud of them.
None have done it better! Karliene, truest and loveliest queen of the music.
This is probably my favourite album. I can't get enough of it. The vocals, the instruments, it's just perfect.
Oh Karliene, passion in your voice made me shiver all along the song. It's EPIC.
I even teared up on the last minutes of tune (know it as a "Drunken sailor" song).
Thank you.
Love this lively tale of a villainous yet captivating lady swashbuckling!
This song pumps me up. So much passion, rawness and spirit in her voice. It's like Anne is channeling through her!
This is awesome. By the way, Anne Bonny is one of the main characters in Black Saills and she is written so well.
Best character in the show.
"But if you fought like a man, you would not be hanged like a dog."
Oh, fuck.
Poor Jack.
He loved Anne Bonny more than anything.
I don't wanna see this scene in Black Sails. :(
Can't argue with her words though. Guy got drunk and left his pregnant lover to fight off the marines with no one but her BFF at her side.
Perhaps only second to the Pirate Empress Shih Ching and Mary Reed; Anne Bonney will forever have the infamy of being one of the most feared and beautiful pirates to sail the seas. Beautiful song and a true testament to Ireland's most infamous daughter.
Now, that "the legend of Anne Bonny" is released, I realize that this is a summary of the album, or was this song extendet into an album? I don't know, and I don't know which i love more either. It is gorgeous❤️❤️❤️. I just would had loved it more if this would have been included in the album 😏
the album expands on the story told in this song
Reminds me of the song Gráinne Mhaol, Queen Of Pirates by Miracle Of Sound! Both of you guys are awesome! Hope you collab more often!
I think Karliene sang that!
Jessica Caron nah, that one was just gav
I love Miracle of Sound's music, I have yet to hate a song yet!!
Grania NiMaille was a noble woman who led her clans at a time when female clan chiefs were unheard of. She used piracy to provide for her people and fight back against English invaders, sent by Queen Elizabeth. Anne Bonny was little more than a slut who took up with a pretty boy pirate and with him, became sort of the BONNIE AND CLYDE of the Caribbean. About the only good that can be said about her(from my study of her) was, She was by all accounts, beautiful, courageous and a good fighter.
Craig Wallander Anne was a pirate. That’s kinda what most pirates were, lying, thieving, promiscuous fighters. Grace O’Malley was an exception more than a rule.
Awesome use of the song/tune of 'What do we do with a drunken sailor'
Beautiful as always I adore your historical songs especially Boudica.
I'd love it if you sang of Pocahontas' true history or even Cleopatra. A celtic version of 'Grim Grinning Ghosts' perhaps with the lyrics changed somewhat to spin a tale in October. A song containing Scottish mythical creature(s) would be amazing especially the dangerous yet elusive Kelpie. Any song about comic book characters would be awesome as well if you're ever up to it but not if you don't want to. Passion singing is better than accepting requests.
I'm great with lyrics but horrible with melodies, any tips?
Have you ever considered joining the group 'Celtic Woman'? You'd be a great Alto singer amongst their Soprano.
Beautiful. Just epic, you have done Ann justice with this ballad. Sail on Karlene, would love to see what you would do with Mary Reed or Edward Kenway just saying.😀
This is an absolutely powerful song to be very proud of. Every word that is showing the extent of this extremely hard life. She was a strong, a beauty, a powerful woman, so great as the tale of Anne Bonnie.
Oh my gosh , this girl have a very unique voice 👌🤩... So amazing !♥️♥️♥️👍
‘If you had fought like a man. You wouldn’t be about to die like a dog.’ Owwww I have goosebumps.
This is fabulous! I'm a huge fan of folk stories, and folk music with simple melodies but dynamic vocals, and you pwned that style so hard in this! The lyrics were amazing too, the entire time I was on the edge of my seat going "What's going to happen next?" Your such an amazing storyteller, and the production of this was stellar. One of my new favorites from you!
Crystal Dennis Music Thank you so, so much, :-)
I love this song
Today (April 22) she is dead for 237 years.
R.I.P Anne Bonny - the pirate queen 🌊⛵️🖤
Celina Black I thought the date of her death was unknown
You must be related to Anne Bonny because her date of death (and even birth) are unknown.
Or you're just making it up or something.
Mauka Dreads no one knows her date of death as she disappeared from history awhile after being captured alongside Mary Read, but mary died of illness after giving birth. It’s probably a guess for how long she’s been dead, the rest of her life is unknown because it’s speculated that she escaped and went back to being a pirate or died in prison, whichever fate it is she was never executed but if she was, it was never written down in history
Mauka Dreads no problem :D
This is just speculation based on a history channel documentary, but some have speculated that her father had some pull and had her smuggled back. Move to a different area change your name, not hard in those days
Thanks to you, I karaoke this song to the community of pirates that I am apart of. Different Crews, ships and meetups. Each time after, the sound is absolutely deafening.
Thank you for bringing the legend to life. Phenomenally well done lass.
Coming back to the OG song after memorizing the entire Anne Bonny album ❤️ You're amazing
What a small world this is, I recently watching black sails and Anne Bonny is a main character.
Now you release this song! Absolutely great timing and fantastic song!
I recomend you all the show Black Sails. Every caracter is featured perfecly, and Anne Bonny is just my fav 😍
YAS I loved the Ballad of Anne Boleyn, and the Highwayman, can’t wait for this to come on iTunes!!
Brilliant!!!!! "Well behaved women rarely make history!" Not sure who said this originally, but it's very true. Women were considered "property" for a very long time, exceptions to the rule of course. Long time in the coming but at last we are becoming equals. Women like Anne Bonny, Mary Reade, Catherine the Great, & many more. In more recent history Tracy Edwards put together the 1st all female crew for the Whitbread Around the World Sailing competition, on a sailing vessel named Maiden. These amazing women won 2 of the 5 legs back in '89-'90. They all paved the way for us. Let's not forget them!!!!
Anne bonny should her own movie or musical ❤❤❤
😱 I love Anne!! My favorite pirate and one hell of a woman. Dress as her yearly she’s certainly my Queen. Saving this song it’s great. Love your voice.
The savage yet melodic vocals have got to be some of the best you've done, grand job.
Your voice is shockingly beautiful, and the way you told this tail is nothing short of poetic!
Your channel is without a doubt one of the best channels on UA-cam. Thanks for sharing your talent and hard work
I've listened to the Anne Bonny album so many times that this song feels so FAST now.
P.S.
As a graphic artist, I'm a fan of the gorgeous font used in this video and very elegant design work. Well done to the creative team.
I just listened to the full Legend of Anne Bonny Album...I will say the album goes WAY more into depth about her life but I was a little disappointed that THIS song was not a part track listing. It honestly would make a great summary as a ending
Oh I how your voice that gutteral rasp when you sing ahhhhhhh!!!!
I know, It's so cool to here!
Oh my god. THIS is perfection!! Honestly.
I'm a singer myself and I'm not easily impressed but this is... a whole new level! I love the lyrics, I love the music and above all I absolutely adore your voice. It's so rough in this song and it goes so well with the theme of the song. Absolutely amazing!!
45 seconds in and I'm already in love! YOU ARE A QUEEN KARLIENE! ❤
Don't know why but that spoken line always gives me the tingles lol.
I love the “drunken Sailor” reprise in the end 🖤
Oh my god! IM so used to your soft, clear sound we usually get from you. But this was absolutely phenomenal! The rawness and natural rasp in this song make it so much more authentic to listen to. Love your tudor album series also.
kaitlyn amira kerr Thanks so much. I’m so glad you like this one :-)
This brings back memories of my childhood when I would be so obsessed with anne bonny
As someone who enjoys Black Sails, this is wonderful! You've done it again Karliene!!
Damn, this could be a whole musical.
Oh my this is amazing. I remember first reading about her in my book I got for my birthday when I was younger about both Famous and Infamous Women of History.
Then I bumped into her again while traveling to Florida. Beautiful song
Please do a Black Sails fan song! This is so perfect
Honfhhy Ldjvg I love Black Sails
Honfhhy Ldjvg black sails doesn’t have the massive following it deserves. Way better than game of thrones, in my opinion.
@@bobrice5159 I only recently found out about Black Sails, and being completely fascinated with the Golden Age of Piracy, and Toby Stephens and Zach McGowan, I had to watch it. And while I enjoyed the earlier seasons of Game of Thrones, I completely agree with you. Black Sails is everything Game of Thrones wishes it was. Black Sails needs a bigger following, even though the series is already finished.
Lyrical genius on every level
This song will never get old
One of my favorites!!
I can’t wait until this song hits iTunes! I can’t stop listening to it😍😍😍😍😍😍
Just an "Amazing" song my Hurdy Gurdy and Cutlass thank you for sharing your heart and voice to the Pirates Queens. I love to play along with your music
I have listened to this all day
My list of favorite pirates are Thomas Tew, Henry Every (A.k.a. John Avery or Benjamin Bridgman), Edward Teach (Blackbeard), William Kidd, and Anne Bonny. This song makes Anne seem so much cooler. Nice work.
Honestly this is amazing! As a maritime historian, it just tickles all my interests haha and I love the inclusion of the words Bonny said to Rackham in prison :D
Your vocals are so powerful and the tales you tell come to life with the energy that you put into them. Fantastic!
O Lady Karliene, my dear pirate lass, I do love your singin' 'specially of this song of freedom-loving buccaneers who roamed the waters of the world! I'm writing a slew of pirate fantasy/sci-fi stories and I am adding this to my playlist of songs to listen to when I work!
I really hope you do more pirate-themed songs!
kilnorc Thank you and massive luck writing your stories!
Are they pirate stories set in space because I’m really loving that...
Thank you so much for the luck!
Heh, well, FUNNY thing is, they were originally just fantasy, but after some revelations with some ideas, the best I can give without spoils is pirating and fantasy adventures in space. A mix between tech and classic (like steampunk, or Thundercats, or Treasure Planet) and eventually, I like to think they'll cross the stars!
I came from Black sails and Anne Bonny is really a queen❤️
I'm thinking about an Anne Bonny cosplay. As historically accurate as possible, of course. Maybe even memorize this song and perform it.
Great voice great song, i am fan now!
does anyone had assassin's creed black flag flashback while listening this song?just me? :D
that's the first thing i thought about lmao
Uncharted 4 flashbacks here instead
I adore this song! Thank ye kindly!
Pure perfection as always.
Hmmmm.... A new song to be addicted to. Stop being so addicting! Your performance is so amazing! Loving this new song in montreal, canada.
This popped back up on my recommendations and I couldn’t be happier
Your voice..love it
“Drunken sailor” variation is the most precious thing 💜
In the instrumentals, the lyrics and the voice, this is about as perfect as a ballad can get.
Brilliant music thankyou beautiful
This song is about one of my ancestors and Iove hearing her story in a way I relate with.
Every single word is wow really wow ..and the voice and it's pitch tells that the singer is as badass as our loved Anne bonny
Karliene I'm glad i found you on youtube. i was shocked when this song popped up on my playlist, but i instantly fell in love. With your vocals in the song and also just the fact Anne Bonny was such a huge Hero imo, she wasn't afraid to stand up for what she wanted female/male. She Showed no fear in the face of adversity. Something everyone feels fear of at some point in their life. Thank you for such an impressive song.
Wish there were more singing story tellers in the world. Thank you.
I love this song so much that I learned the guitar part in one day. It's great.
Nice PFP
Beautiful....Just captures the soul of the pirate queen I studied while pursuing a 6th history degree. Karliene even looks like the Bonny I imagined.
Have been listening to this and Hands of Gold on repeat all day, they’re great to daydream to ^_^
This deserve so much more likes.
Anne Bonny and Mary Read. This made my day. Loves it.
*dances as a male addition to the female backing singers* What an awesome rp character's backstory!
This is so amazing.. unbelievable. The rough tune suits you perfectly, please more of this kind!
Definitely one of my favorites I've found so far, your voice goes with this so well... :)
I've listened to this song so many times and it still gives me goosebumps
My God! Perfect! Amazing!!!!!
Brazil here🇧🇷
This was a pleasant discovery while trying to show my wife who the great Anne Bonny was. Thank you for this experience. Awesome song.
У вас просто чудесный голос!!
This is awesome. She's my favorite pirate.
Omg the best song
