  • Using the Tunisian crochet is one of my favorite ways to create a circle. It creates a lovely design and best part is you don’t have to do all that counting! I love using this circle for making coasters and placemats.
    ________________________
The Tunisian circle is made by crocheting a series of short and long rows around the stitches on the magic ring, which are then seamed together.
    ADJUSTING SIZE:
The size of the circle can be adjusted by adding adding stitches to the long and short rows.
If your circle doesn’t lay flat you may need to add or remove some sc sts from the ring, which will increase/decrease number of long+short rows (short rows should be half the length of the long rows)
Number of long+short rows, at the end, will be determined by the number of single crochet stitches you add to the magic ring in the beginning. The total should be: 2 times the number of stitches in the ring, plus 2.
    example: if you start with 8 single crochet stitches, the final row count will be 18 long and 18 short ( 2 x 8 + 2 = 18 )
    BINDING - OFF:
The bind-off in the video will create 1 additional stitch around the perimeter of your circle.
To bind-off without adding an extra stitch: do NOT insert needle through the first stitch (at the top of the first long row) instead skip that stitch and insert needle through the second stitch (top of the first short row), then complete as shown by inserting needle from the top, through the center of the last stitch (top of last short tow)

    MATERIALS/TOOLS:
    Yarn: Caron Simply Soft
Hook: 4mm Tulip crochet hook - if making larger circle you may need to use a straight hook without a handle, or a Tunisian crochet hook
    Yarn needle
    Scissors

Thank you for your demo! I need to make 20 8 inch placemats. How can I go beyond what you did here to make the circle bigger?

This looks brilliant! How does it scale? For, say, a ch12 beginning, would you do short rows of 6sts, or would you do 9-6-3-6-9?

For a ch12 I would do a 6st short row (usually I just make my short rows half the length of the long, to keep it easy)

Hi, I tried with 9 single crochets inside the magic circle, I need 13 chains to make the size of my circle, so like you I did 2 long rows 2 short rows but the circle didn't close.
Then I tried with 16 single crochets still inside the magic circle and making 2 long rows and 2 short rows and it didn't close either.
I started 9 single crochets again inside the magic circle but this time I made 3 long rows and 3 short rows but this time it didn't close either.
So at this point I tried to make 16 single crochets inside the magic circle, this time also making 3 long rows and 3 short rows, it became too long, the closure overlaps so there is something I don't understand.
Maybe I should make 13 single crochets inside the magic circle and 3 long and short rows???
I made 9 loops for the short rows, is that ok or do I need to do more, if so how many loops for the short row????
    Thank you

Amazing tutorial, good to unterstand even for a beginner. I have a question though :) my projects keep getting too tight and then they aren´t flat. What is my mistake ? 😅

Try using a larger size hook, that will help loosen up the tension a bit so your project can lay flat.
