i like how this could be an actual survival kit guide like hey it's the zombie apocalypse but nuclear snail studios has my back yay (great vid as always!)
1. Sleeping mat is good, here I see it is sort of isolated on one side, which is a very good feature. Field bed is probably the best option, however there is also an option of an inflatable mattress. Better than a foam pad, easier to carry than a field bed. 2. Tents. Good guality tent is great, as they are usually easy to put up, and don't have troubles with poor quality equipement, like tent pegs. Rain is a lottery however. I have a veeeeeeery cheap tent (like 60pln, or 14 euro), and through my 3-4 year use, it lived through a few pretty bad storms. Yes, it leaked a bit, but just a bit, and mostly through the ventilation mesh on top. Leaks on the seams vere easily fixed with some drops of superglue and electrical tape. 3. Safety blankets - they are life safers. When you are cold in the night you can use them to keep warm, and during the day, as you've said, you can keep your tent from heating up. And they are cheap and don't take much space. 4. Head torch. Oh, man, it's great, especially when going to a portable toilet at night. But still, I'd recommend having at least one additional, handheld torch. Just in case. 5. Shoes. I've made a terrible mistake of going out in old, torn up boots, that had the post-apo look to them, but they were a torture to walk in. Even a small walk, like 1km was painfull, and all I could think about is taking them off. Having them dry is also VERY important, as walking around with water slushing inside is annoying, but what's worse, is that wet shoes and wet socks act almost like a sandpaper on your feet. It's not pleasant. 6. From my expirience I can say, that it's best to bring twice as much pairs of socks as there are days of an event, if you're gonna be walking a lot. If not, then I'd recommend at least 1.5x (for example - 4 day event = 6 pairs). You never know when you accidentally walk into a deep puddle, making your feet wet. Which is not good, as stated above. 7. Rather than having to carry water bottle and a soap, I'd suggest investing into as small antibacterial gel. A small bottle, about the size of two matchboxes, can last for a loooooong time. I use mine for even as long as 4 months after an event, and they are so small, they can fit into a belly bag and can be carried around all the time. 8. It's awesome to see that I'm not the only one that has anti-diarrhea pills xD Same with allergic pills. What I would add are painkillers. They can be very usefull. 9. Sunscreen is very important in summer, even if the sky is clouded, don't forget that UV can hit you through the clouds. I would also add: 1. String - usefull for a lot of stuff, like tying stuff together, having a way of repairing brokent tent strings, or to make a place to dry wet clothes 2. Garbage bags - very usefull to have a tidy tent, to store stuff inside of it, or just for garbage 3. Lighter/matches - even if you don't smoke, you can use it to start a camp fire, or something. 4. Dry Shampoo - If there is no place to wash yourself, but you don't want to have greasy hair. That's all I have to say, probably. Might have missed something though. P.S. ALWAYS do a good research on larp or event you're going to. And check the weather.
What to take on a post-apocalyptic LARP mostly depends on the setting, I think. There may be differences between, lets say, a zombie apocalypse and a Fallout-style nuclear wasteland, or an Earth conquered by aliens.
I mean, if you´re LARPing Fallout in the deserts of Nevada, you should bring sunblocker, but if the theme is more like "hiding from zombies in the snowy wilds of sweden", warm clothing is the thing to take. :-)
Events like Wasteland Weekend and Detonation (the End of Days event at Uranium Springs) aren't LARPs, but much of this still applies. We should all do research on any given event before going to make sure we are prepared, obviously, but this definitely covers the basics to keep you alive and comfortable so you can have a good time. Great video! Glad you're back at it!
As someone prospectively interested in taking up LARP again, although now in a post-apocalyptic setting rather than the LOTR/fantasy settings I played as a teenager, this video is really helpful in giving me ideas about kit. I was really enjoying it and then 19:58 .... "..it brings the scent of chamomile to your butt." and I just lost it. You're a straight up legend man.
Excellent video. Two suggestions based on my experiences real world. 1) For a great jacket and not spending a huge amount of money get a M65 field jacket. This is the older US military combat jacket. You can pick them up in surplus store cheaply because everyone wants a gortex now. They are comfortable, warm and functional. 2) Walmart sells a brand of boots called Rhino. You can get the ankle boots with a steel toe for about $50.00. Great full leather boots with a lug sole. I've worn them as my primary motorcycle boots for 5 years (same pair of boots) and used them hunting. I've gotten them soaking wet and after a dry out and polish they are good as new.
Oh shit man, my wife and I are watching some of your videos to prep for starting to go to Dystopia Rising and we've had to pause a few times for the laughter. Informative and entertaining! Thanks for the work and the info. :-D
Thanks so much for this! I'm still working out all the details, but hopefully I'll be going to my first larp soon, and it's Dystopia Rising! Thanks for the tips, lots of this stuff I didn't realize.
Another headlamp thing that I added to my costume; tape a flashlight to your hat/helmet. It looks awesome and can be brighter than some headlamps. It also looks very Dying Light.
Some of this stuff is standart for 4 days festival time. So if you are a festival rouky you have the basics. Packing the clothes is like the german army Nato role. My personal favorite for food is dry instant soup. It's not so heavy like the cans and you're able to cary more of them.
I like the dry soup too, and packaged Ramen noodles can be eaten dry if I want -- they're nice and crunchy and (unlike potato or corn chips) they're easier to pack without getting then crushed in my bag.
Thank you for this useful information. I'm going to attend Old Town for the first time in my life this year. I'm an extremely city person (and a couch potato to that) so this is gonna be quite and adventure for me. (Also - great hairdo! )
So Im trying to get into Dystopia Rising near me and they want genre appropriate food. They talk about packaging and labels and stuff, but whats genre appropriate storage for a po-ap larp? If packages arent ok, what do I do with say a bag of jerky, wrap it in cloth? is that going to be ok? How do people store foods at these larps?, like can I have a cooler or large lunchbox? If packaged/canned food is kinda rare wth am I suppose to bring to the larp? So say I take simple ingredients along, can a cooler keep meat and dairy for 3 days on one package of ice?, no. But ice wouldnt be appropriate to bring cause it wouldnt last long both in game and real life. I bought things like jerky and mres to now be questioning myself if theyre ok? Things like sugar, salt, flour and tea or drink mix is easy to keep you can put them in metal cans and canning jars. So would something like tupperware/plastic containers be fine? I know camping mess and cookware kits seem in genre but is that even appropriate? Someone needs to make a video on mainstream po-ap larps or even fantasy for acceptable storage of your food. Its really irritating trying to stay in genre while also bringing something to keep your food in that decently stores your food. Larp or not I want my food properly stored for camping at larps, to keep animals or bugs from my food and keep my food safe. If anyone has a vid I can watch or some tips please let me know.
would a motor cross jacket over a plain metal chest plate be any good because my character collected armour before the apocalypse started and they would be the only realistic things she could find.
I love your videos. Can you make a video discussing how to build a costume for people just starting out. I'm sure alot of us have no idea where to begin. Plus those types of videos tend to get a butt load of views.
Well, in case of shoes it really depends on what you play. For a simple trader who stays in "civilized" spaces most of the time and dosen´t really has to fight canvas shoes can be enough. But for example for the character that I play, who is part of the security team of a lager group, who is often in harsh terrain, fights and has to carry heavy loads, very strong and protective boots are a must have. I wear old full leather combat boots that go up to the shin and can be bund very tight. They not only protect your ankles but also your lower shin.
Rescueblankets work both ways. There is no one way that let's heat through and not the other way around. The golden side is just because they were invented for skiing and it's easier to see in the snow than the silver side
actually, i would EDC a big clunky rotary can opener, just because its ease of use and quickness of cranking, outweighs its size. I would MUCH rather spend like, 5 seconds cranking a sledgehammer of a can opener, than spend 5 minutes fiddling with a little guitar pick of a thingie.
14:38 "because no one is usually EDC'ing that big thing that you have in your kitchen" Actually, yeah, i would EDC a big heavy mechanical can opener. it's a damn good can opener and works alot better than any other design of can opener i've gotten ahold of ..... also, if need be, i could club someone upside the head with it.
I know you are looking at saving space but for sock at least, I would recommend the number of days your going to be there plus one. The plus one is for rain or oil or whatever...
I have a question about the tent : can you customize it without altering it? Is there a way to make it fit into a post-apocaliptic event and make sure that it's still waterproof? It's a genuine question. I've been to several larps and they often ask you to have tents that fit the "universe" of the event, but I've never been to a post-apo larp. Anyway, great vid, as always! Keep up the good work! :D
Would Brahma work boots be good to use? I wear them out into the woods all the time. They are a bit heavy, and make my feet hurt a bit, but I have adapted to them.
Hayden Frost hammershot is popular. but even the ones that have extra big darts, and off brand ones can pass for Dystopia Rising. you are limited to only 20 foam darts, so throwing packets are a better deal. Google 'dystopia rising" to find your local chapter, and talk to the new player marshal
I'm really really interested in Larping or apoc events I just don't know which ones are still going or any good. I know of wasteland weekend but that's about it. Any help, suggests or any other links or info would be unbelievably appreciated. Thank you in advance.
This will sound funny, but my best defense against ticks is wearing a dog "flea and tick" collar around my ankles. I cut it in half and use one half for each ankle, wrapping it around and duck-taping the ends. They've kept me tick-free no matter how many ticks are crawling around on-site. I got the idea because I rescue animals; and now it's my permanent tick-prevention method. I wear it next to my skin but if you have sensitive skin, wear it over your socks or boots. It's easy to grub up, and make look ambient.
haha alot :p but army surplus are the best things to buy for stuff like this :p I usemostly surplus army gear for my bug out bag and standard camping stuff becasethey are proven to work and to behonestthe are really cheap even unused gear ^^
Question to anyone that can help. I'm working on getting started making post apoc costumes and accessories, but I could use some advice on where to get some items such as military surplus cheaply since there aren't any surplus stores anywhere near me. Most places are looking to sell the stuff in the best condition, but I'm looking to get my hands on the poor quality, beat up and mostly worn out type stuff. Pouches, belts, straps and some clothing. Any advice from anyone?
As for rolling all of your clothes together - you will have to unpack the whole roll every day. I prefer to make rolls for every day. You take a tshirt, lay it flat, put in yer pants, socks (so that they stand out) make a roll and use socks to stabilise it - you just pull them on top of the roll.
it's actually a very good idea especially at wasteland weekend. this will be my 3rd year there. the change of socks and undies at least. and it can swing from 110 to 60 degrees. you don't want the sweat and other stuff when you are trying to sleep
+Wieslaw Irzyniec i just dont re-roll it until i leave - and by the time i leave, its all in the dumpbag anyway ^^ but yeah if you´d have to keep packing it, and could not leave it in one place like i do on oldtown, then your method is indeed superior
+Peldrigal Immandrel i usually go with the same shirt for about 2 days... pants + jacket + main larp kit also usually dont change.. but cmon, the same sweaty socks and underpants all the time is ew. that saidt- i dont shower on LARP :D on oldtown i go to the lake.. but i dont go to the shower on any event, just a waste of time. as long as my butt smells of camomile, all is fine :D
Survival gear. Plan on camping, and not dying. Go survival camping, solo first (However long the event is for.) If you come back all right, then you're ready for a wilderness PALARP. If you want to be invited back, don't make anyone carry you. Then, add all the creature comforts you need to enjoy the event, but first, learn to survive on your own. You might find yourself in a Real life or death situation, at such an event.
Any decent survival pack is specific to the one who has to survive on it. You don't need all of that, and there's some things you will need, that that doesn't have. That's why you have to prove your self sufficiency for at least a 3 day weekend (The first 72 hours are crucial) before you try to do it in a group. The group will respect your self sufficiency, and hopefully you will come up with some cool hacks to show off when you get there.
For example, earplugs. I've been homeless (Or "Urban Survival Camping") for most of my adult life. So, I can sleep under an active train trellis, because I have. I lived under one for over a year (The Steel Bridge in Portland Oregon) before we built a rest area down town. (I mean 3rd, and Burnside downtown)
Nice video. But you´ve made one little mistake. Don´t wear clothes whilst you are in your sleeping bag. If you do your bodyheat won´t heat up the sleeping bag properly and this could you get into serious problems. Hypothermia is no fun at all.
Thats the general purpose of your sleepingbag. Keeping you warm at night. If the bodyheat is kept in your clothes you will freeze while sleeping. In general this applys to really cold weather but it also can happen at around 10°c downwards. Maybe you won´t suffer a real hypothermia but it isn´t comfortable to freeze at night, too. In my service time a comrade didn´t follow this order of our instructors and went to sleep in full combat- and thermal clothing..... and woke up in an ambulance on his way to the hospital. Severe hypo. Everyone else was fine. i should mention that it was fuckin cold on this drill. Around -20°c. Das an deinem Schlafsack was dich warm hält.
In germany that would be the F.A.T.E. All nighters are not rare there. In the Medical Corp (the group i play in) we have a night watch for our base in case of attacks at night.
i like how this could be an actual survival kit guide like hey it's the zombie apocalypse but nuclear snail studios has my back yay (great vid as always!)

I'll make it to Wasteland Weekend one day. Maybe this year, maybe next
+Josh O At least you have the option I turn 18 one day after the festival begins
It's coming to the UK next year! I can't wait! :-)
Well shit. Now it's been 4 years. I gotta know.
I'm looking forward to it too. . .
Great video, I would love to see more attention to detail in this capacity at more US LARPs.
"Brings the scent of camomile to your butt" Omg haha i love your videos! :)!!
Thanks so much for this! I'm still working out all the details, but hopefully I'll be going to my first larp soon, and it's Dystopia Rising! Thanks for the tips, lots of this stuff I didn't realize.
+Chesterson Jack have fun mate! :) DR is awesome, so i heard! :)
+Nuclear Snail Studios Thanks! I certainly will.
I know the video is old, but it was very helpful and very detailed! :)
First post-apo LARP in two weeks and if I am able to wear a decent outfit and have everything I need with me it will be all thanks to you!
Another headlamp thing that I added to my costume; tape a flashlight to your hat/helmet. It looks awesome and can be brighter than some headlamps. It also looks very Dying Light.
that's a really great backpack. where's it from?
There's one on budk for about twenty bucks unless you have an account then it's like ten
Dimitri: I'm talking about Sleeping, eating, staying clean, not dying!
Me: Omg I need him in my real life as well!

you have to make a DIY on that Shield
Thank you for this useful information. I'm going to attend Old Town for the first time in my life this year. I'm an extremely city person (and a couch potato to that) so this is gonna be quite and adventure for me. (Also - great hairdo! )
I wish I had watches this before my first con. Had to leave at 5 a.m. first day, because I almost froze to death and didnt sleep at all.
You have some serious Ragnar Viking vibes with your hair right now and I'm digging it
"It brings the scent of chamomile to your butt." XD
10:02, Rusty spikes in the ground, potentially dangerous... That's welcoming. Just kidding! I love your content! Keep up the amazing work!

our local DR chapter recommends you change your socks every 6 to 12 hours. I tend to go through 6 pairs in a Friday night to Sunday noon period.
omFg i loved the trick with the hat :p
excellent video , practical for almost any kind of larp event . Thank you :)
Can you please do a vlog at your LARPS?
Thank you.. we're going to junktown and these tips are super.
Hell yeah! We carry the same knife! just for that i am bumping up my patreon donation.
+PugnaciousFerret hahahahah how awesome is THAT! thanks! :DD also, awesome knife man, looks cool, compact, sturdy
Do you make videos of your LARPs / Festivals??? Or reviews or something?
not yet really, i dont go to as many events, and the ones i go to i love all of them ^^
but still i Think footage of those events would be awesome! especially to see your great work in action

Hey, just wanted to ask, when Dustwind will be released, for what I´ve seen so far, it is super cool, and I would be looking forward to playing it :D
some "action" overnight
In post apo-LARP's, what sort of weapons do you use? Nerf, airsoft or something else?
Airsoft and foam weapons.
Manu ben canar Nerf or packet throwing for fire arms. Packets for bows, and foam for melee.
LazuliteHalcyon
What kind of nerf guns
Hayden Frost hammershot is popular. but even the ones that have extra big darts, and off brand ones can pass for Dystopia Rising.
you are limited to only 20 foam darts, so throwing packets are a better deal. Google 'dystopia rising" to find your local chapter, and talk to the new player marshal
You can get the packs at the flea market..not much
I'm really really interested in Larping or apoc events I just don't know which ones are still going or any good.
How much does this kit weigh?
Ein Video speziell für mich, hihi. =)
I'm pretty sure I'd be that guy who shows up with twenty cans of fruit and pass it around
That's a sound list for any LARP :-)
Danke!
Someone count how many time she says German Army last generation.
haha alot :p but army surplus are the best things to buy for stuff like this :p I usemostly surplus army gear for my bug out bag and standard camping stuff becasethey are proven to work and to behonestthe are really cheap even unused gear ^^
Yeah right, i do the same, but with frenchie stuff ahaha :D
+Charles Emeriau Farges awesome! ^^
+Charles Emeriau Farges awesome! ^^
european larps are so much more intense/aesthetically pleasing. i feel like an idiot in my post apocalyptic larp compared to this
I would love to do one like the colony..where you have different things happen and have to survive for day's
hey the link to the list seems to just take you to the nuclear snail fb page... thoughts?
Question to anyone that can help. I'm working on getting started making post apoc costumes and accessories, but I could use some advice on where to get some items such as military surplus cheaply since there aren't any surplus stores anywhere near me. Most places are looking to sell the stuff in the best condition, but I'm looking to get my hands on the poor quality, beat up and mostly worn out type stuff. Pouches, belts, straps and some clothing. Any advice from anyone?
shadowstalker130666 did you get help with this question? what general region are you located in?
I can't find the graphic.
i have a small med kit that i would bring
What's that fanny pack deal you have and where did you get it?
As for rolling all of your clothes together - you will have to unpack the whole roll every day. I prefer to make rolls for every day. You take a tshirt, lay it flat, put in yer pants, socks (so that they stand out) make a roll and use socks to stabilise it - you just pull them on top of the roll.
+Wieslaw Irzyniec
Changing clothes every day at a larp?
Where does this magic fairyland exists? ^^
+Peldrigal Immandrel good one. But seriously - this is a handy trick when you go on trips.
it's actually a very good idea especially at wasteland weekend. this will be my 3rd year there. the change of socks and undies at least. and it can swing from 110 to 60 degrees. you don't want the sweat and other stuff when you are trying to sleep
+Wieslaw Irzyniec i just dont re-roll it until i leave - and by the time i leave, its all in the dumpbag anyway ^^ but yeah if you´d have to keep packing it, and could not leave it in one place like i do on oldtown, then your method is indeed superior
+Peldrigal Immandrel i usually go with the same shirt for about 2 days... pants + jacket + main larp kit also usually dont change.. but cmon, the same sweaty socks and underpants all the time is ew. that saidt- i dont shower on LARP :D on oldtown i go to the lake.. but i dont go to the shower on any event, just a waste of time. as long as my butt smells of camomile, all is fine :D
what type of bag is that did you make it or did you buy it and where
Hev you been at Blodsbnad in Sweden?
Here because of the corrona virus gotta get ready for when shit hits the fan
you mean get ready for when the pandemic is over and everyone can go to LARP again
Is alcohol permited there?
Vulpes at wasteland weekend it is, idk bout oldtown or the others
In Oldtown is allowed.
+FullMetalFox danke! werds mal ausprobieren hehe
Yeah. Pumpernickel rockt. :D
did this event already happen? where can i get info on ticket prices
Was ist das für ein Rucksack? Sieht richtig schnieke aus!
You really should consider waxing your pack. Great look and function
you should go to wasreland weekend
are you making it to wasteland weekend 2017? it's 5 days this year
Nice video. But you´ve made one little mistake. Don´t wear clothes whilst you are in your sleeping bag. If you do your bodyheat won´t heat up the sleeping bag properly and this could you get into serious problems. Hypothermia is no fun at all.
+Tonda Rauðhrafna O.o ? im fine so far ..why does my bodyheat has to heat up the bag? also what kind of conditions are we talking?
Horrido.
PS: Freue mich schon aufs nächste Video
thanks sir!
What's the backpack?
A g&g combat raider and a we hicapa 1911 gas blow back
What's the bag?
Does anyone have a link to the backpack that he is using or one similar to the one he is using
for my rations i would just take some slim jims
What kind of medical pouch is that?
looks like an old military medkit ^^
"some Action" ? :D all night? :D man where are those LARPs?!
Oldtown festival for example
In germany that would be the F.A.T.E. All nighters are not rare there. In the Medical Corp (the group i play in) we have a night watch for our base in case of attacks at night.
irgendwieanders1 Dystopia Rising in America. There's multiple chapters. Southern California is a 24 hour threat game.
Dystopia Rising New Jersey staff shambles are a horror of LEGEND. Low rank threat but at 5-7am, it becomes a LOT more effective xD
How does one turn a hubcab into a shield
+Merlin Robertson it aint a hubcap, its a larp shield :D but what u asked is a tutorial topic for another video indeed :)
It would be awesome if you did some individual prop showcasing. Not telling people how to make them, but some more techniques and inspiration
I'm very late but that room is literally what heaven looks like to me...might think it's weird cuz imma girl 0:07
can anyone mention some LARPs that take place in Europe?
Oldtown festival in poland!
thx this will help☺😊😀😁😃😆
I like to be apart of a post war army rather than to be a survivor
Hmm I wonder if he’s German.
Warum machst du keine deutschen Videos?
Have you also normal things to clothe ?😘
😂
Without the 😘
GJ
+Leonardo Ciarravano thx!
