Also, along with style, you can ask youself: "why does my character wear this?" or "what purpose does this item fulfill for my character, that they felt the need to add it to their everyday gear?".
Maybe this is obvious, but just in case: if you're making your costume for a LARP, check your game's requirements and safety regulations before you get your heart set on a particular look.
(tl;dr at the end) About comfort - One thing I find huuuuuuuuuuugely important is how easy it is to use a loo in it. I once did a relatively light, but very comfortable outfit. I could wear it all day and all night long, even sleep in it. But. Having to use a loo was a nightmare, all because of one element. I have an old belt, that is used to climb telephone poles, trees, and stuff like that (just a belt, without the stuff that goes between your legs). Then I had a great idea to add some chain to it. And every time I wanted to go for nr.2, I had to loosen the chain, then loosen said belt (which is not that simple), then undo my pants. Seems not that bad, but it took around a minute just to take it off. And when you are in a hurry, a minute is extremely long. I was lucky I didn't shit myself then xD And then you had to spend 5 minutes to put it properly back on. I'm not gonna make the same mistake again. Other thing, that you did mention in another video, but I'm gonna say it again - shoes/boots. They are very important. And I do mean very. You're most likely gonna spend a shit tone of time in them, possibly walk a lot, possibly in a relatively dangerous places. Good boots, that perhaps don't look very postapocalyptic, but are comfortable and safe, are a huge saviour. As I wrote in a comment under that previous video - I once went out in torn shoes, with steel nose, and other bits and pieces attached. With every step the steel nose dug into my fingers through a hole in the boot. Every single step was a nightmare. I was lucky it wasn't a larp, but just a Zombie Walk in my city, so I didn't have to spend a lot of time in them. After two hours my feet were dying, and I was in pain due to that for about two weeks after. tl;dr - remember that you have to shit from time to time, and that good shoes/boots are important.
Wish I had found this channel when I was making my post-apocalyptic short movie for my school diploma. It was pretty hard to figure everything out by myself.
I have a character that lives in the opposite of a Mad Max universe. A glacial nuclear wasteland, even there is ice, it's radiated and cold weather is super difficult to live there. Must of the people have died, so he is just a survivor that tries to find a warm-safe place. It's amazing how the winter version looks more realistic, meanwhile Mad Max style is more contaminated planet, a place where CO2 had made live on Earth a hell to live. My character lives on the frozen hell.
Great vid! So far I've only made a belt and my road warrior jacket but I tend to keep this stuff in mind. I actually wear my mad max belt everyday, especially when I'm working. I've always felt that having something that's comfortable and functional is paramount :)
+Kate Catlin I've actually got to make another one out of better leather and with more mounting points on it. Adding a pouch bandolier thing to it and more side pouches so I don't ever have to use pants pockets again XD
could a robe be considered post apocalyptic? dirtied and made to look the part of course. perhaps a spiked studded crown for a hat as well? or a brodie helmet? also jumpsuits, are those a thing? trying to make a costume that won't get me so sunburned.
I'm guessing you burn easily? If that's the case try looking for a very light white long sleeve and go from there. Then think of what type of person you're trying to make.
this is great, thank you so much for posting this! I'd really love to see some advice on where to get the raw materials... all your costumes feature so many awesome clamps and buckles, especially metal once... i can't seem to find anything like that at thrift stores. Where else can I look?
This is exactly the information I've discovered in the last month of planning. I want a full armor rig, but to be honest, weight is a bitch to deal with. Thanks for all of this advice. You are awesome!
i love hoods too, id like to make a wasteland leather hoodie but can't seem to find any leather hood so should i just get a normal leather jacket and add a hood to it?
I was thinking of doing a basic post apocalyptic steampunk out fit. With a skirt and top with a corset over it. And the character she is a steampunk time traveler. She is a character from a book series I'm righting Based on my first steampunk outfit. I want to make it for every day use.
I got a old marine corps vest which I’m going to customize, I’m going to get a gas mask and ruff it up, then I as an airsoft player and lover of ARs am going to get a $40 spring powered airsoft m4 and paint it, then last I’m just going to right a 200 page book that goes day by day(might skip some days) as updates of gear I have found throughout all 500 days, and I have an artist friend who can draw me some designs but yes I’m going as a raider so its just all fun also you earned a sub
Good God. You're beautiful to look at and supremely intelligent. Also, I love the dancing and how much you swear. As an incredibly foul mouthed woman, hearing the f-bomb dropped is beautiful. I love the advice about having a plan, but not too much of a plan. Great advice for any project, costuming or otherwise! Being flexible helps me work through plans that fail epically! Please keep making amazing videos!
If the costume is comfortable, the weight dose not mater that much, for example my LARP Ork weights almost 20kg and there is no problems in wearing it about 6 or even 8 hours.
I was held at gunpoint to make and wear a suit of post apocaliptic armor and play larp for five years. also I saw an alian and was probed with a giant frost giant dragon
I've got my apocalyptic load out finally done....well kinda I'm always adding or taking things off of it hah but I pritty much made my load out like a mercenary/scavenger I'm waiting till I get a better camera then I can add a decent quality video to my channel lol
What item exactly do I research to begin my shoulder pieces? I try typing in shoulder pads etc. and have a hard time finding a good canvas to start with.
Helloo Just found this video, for your light weight chest harness... did you make it or buy it, trying yo get references to make my own, your video have inspired to to finally start making my own outfit
sketch? I don' need no stinking sketch.... Can't draw worth a can of beans, but I can visualize and hold a 3D figure in my head, then turn it anyway I want to. That is how I make things happen. It worked well in construction, and other areas. Also the rule of the day in a post apocalyptic environment would be to scrounge until you have what you need. A person traveling on foot would have to have a handcart or make every ounce count. I consider the event and the environment in advance. Even though this is my first time. They wouldn't let me carry my real guns, and so I am going to be carrying toys. Did I tell you you have to make every ounce (gram) count? Also I have a little experience with hunting, survival and back packing, so I am drawing on that. The first time I went backpacking my BFF packed the packs with canned food. .. Tha's right CANNED FOOD! the packs weighted over 100lbs. It was a lesson I never forgot.
why all the stuff and not design the costume around usefull items? cant se how a "cool" costume with lots of not usefull stuff and just loading down the user is practical.
Thank you so much for making this Video! I'm currently creating a post-apo costume for an art project, and I didn't really know how to start. Thanks mate!
then it aint about base, its about tightening it up properly as you wear it and also having that belt under your armpit. mine are always with two belts :)
Nuclear Snail Studios You do? Awesome! What's your FB name, same as here? (This is my real name, btw, so you'll know if I send you a friend request, where I found you)
heavymetal666 it would be a normal bolt (not sure on the size) but the nut is a wing nut or at least that's what they are called in aus should be available at any hardware store
I go to an event called Revelations at Ballahack Airsoft. Please check it out! It is in Virginia (US). You have helped me make my costume and I would love for you to look at it and let me know. If you look at Photos from Revelations Fertile Crescent on FB (ballahack page), I am the guy with the full kit weathered and everything. Look for the tire shoulder pads with metal blades, and a Deer skull codpiece. Would love some feedback from a pro! Your vids have helped me make costumes for others as well. And I am going to WW next year and can't wait! Thank you!
Plus it seems sensible thematically to go with a costume that isn't a giant safety hazard. Giving yourself tetanus wearing a costume is one thing. Someone in a post-apoc setting giving themselves tetanus, however... o3o
Also, along with style, you can ask youself: "why does my character wear this?" or "what purpose does this item fulfill for my character, that they felt the need to add it to their everyday gear?".
Yes IF, you like utilitarianism.
Maybe this is obvious, but just in case: if you're making your costume for a LARP, check your game's requirements and safety regulations before you get your heart set on a particular look.
This is a good comment. I like this comment.

Great tips , that hydration pack setup is ideal for what I'm trying to make.

"it's chaos, death, destruction, grunge right here"
shows a little piece of fabric
:D
Satrif GROUNDBREAKING
What's funny is I was scrolling through the comments while watching the vid and as I read this he was saying it lol

My character lives on the frozen hell.
That sounds epic
I love the harness with the hood and the camelback!
agreed lol
I’m new to all this, but when he showed it off, I was like “genius!!” Lol :)
I like pants with a cameltoe 😂
I can’t find anything that even remotely resembles the latches that he has on the straps
I think that practicality and comfort should cone first, after all your charactef wears that stuff 24/7!
Great vid! So far I've only made a belt and my road warrior jacket but I tend to keep this stuff in mind. I actually wear my mad max belt everyday, especially when I'm working. I've always felt that having something that's comfortable and functional is paramount :)

Putting stuff in your pockets just makes the pants wear out faster I find. Especially if it's army surplus.
hey dimitri, would you ever consider making a shoulder pad tutorial video? Also the hand drill badge looks fucking awesome
I throwed a Pullover in a fireplace...( accidentally) and now its my Cape for my Bowshooter. :3
way to go :D
Lovin the water blater and hoodie! Ive been thinkin of making something similer but trying to think of a good way to atach the hoodie.
Sew a hoodie on to the straps and cut around it?

You have a very impressive collection of costumes/armor there Nuclear Snail Studios .
keep it up, it's always good to see new videos from you.
This is exactly the information I've discovered in the last month of planning. I want a full armor rig, but to be honest, weight is a bitch to deal with. Thanks for all of this advice. You are awesome!
Re chaos vs organization, many military veterans are going to revert to old habits...some may even try to shine their boots to preserve them
tru story!
LOL 'Tortured Turtle' dude you're awesome another great video.
i love hoods too, id like to make a wasteland leather hoodie but can't seem to find any leather hood so should i just get a normal leather jacket and add a hood to it?
Yes. And he's gone over this in a different video about using a pair of pants as a hood
Love your channel Dimitri, your tutorials rock!
Oh and can you make a tutorial on how to make a nerf gun look like a real weapon?
Great advice! I am going to Wasteland Weekend this year and making garb. Thanks for the inspiration!
I was thinking of doing a basic post apocalyptic steampunk out fit. With a skirt and top with a corset over it. And the character she is a steampunk time traveler. She is a character from a book series I'm righting Based on my first steampunk outfit. I want to make it for every day use.
Christy Hansen
Sounds very cool ^~^ I hope it goes well
First time I made a 80 pound backpack. Made the mistake of wanting a functional cutting blow torch. And it ended up failing to work.
Wicked idea though! Nothing wrong with thinking big, you just need to figure out where to make it work!
I absolutely adore your videos, great work!
Thanks for all the tips all the time! You are really helpful and I love seeing your projects
i love your custumes. if i find some time i'm going to design my own

Good God. You're beautiful to look at and supremely intelligent. Also, I love the dancing and how much you swear. As an incredibly foul mouthed woman, hearing the f-bomb dropped is beautiful. You guys go for the more mad max look, which is cool. But fallout styled stuff is cool to, try some of that.
Love your stuff. Can you tell me where you got the Mad Max shirt? It's the one I've been looking for! Thanks!
Another excellent video, keep up the great work!
If the costume is comfortable, the weight dose not mater that much, for example my LARP Ork weights almost 20kg and there is no problems in wearing it about 6 or even 8 hours.
yeah distribution is important AF!
The buckle on that heavy set is ridiculous big. I want one! What is it from?
So glad I found this channel
What type of coat would be good for some warmth yet a little long
Like a duster coat, or a trench coat with the sleeves ripped off and you can use it to layer on top of other clothes
dude. Love your channel. Very helpful.
Thanks Ima take inspiration from this and draw it
Great tips this will help me out greatly in my costume thank you
I was held at gunpoint to make and wear a suit of post apocaliptic armor and play larp for five years. also I saw an alian and was probed with a giant frost giant dragon
I've got my apocalyptic load out finally done....well kinda I'm always adding or taking things off of it hah but I pritty much made my load out like a mercenary/scavenger I'm waiting till I get a better camera then I can add a decent quality video to my channel lol
Hey Dimitri I have a question I have a modern civil war soldier idea any tips or advice for elements or gear ideas?

Hello! Great video, thanks a lot. What type of harness do you use as base for your harness with the hood and camelback?
I have been wondering the same thing. Googled it but I can't seem to figure it out.
I thing its some type of parachute harness, but thats all..
Do u think u could make a tutorial to make the light one with the hydration pack??
I want to design a truck and outfit at the same time so that they will influence each other, and I'm going to take it too WW!
I am designing a Biker themed Mercenary, think you can help with a semi apocalyptic biker vest?

Helloo Just found this video, for your light weight chest harness... did you make it or buy it, trying yo get references to make my own, your video have inspired to to finally start making my own outfit

Cool Mad Max T-Shirt!
😂 too complicated I'll just combine pajamas and a jumpsuit for fashion.😂
Is there a backpack strap? At 1:39
Realy gives me some good pointers for the costume iam working on.
You're very talented!
why all the stuff and not design the costume around usefull items?
cant se how a "cool" costume with lots of not usefull stuff and just loading down the user is practical.
Realism isn't the end all be all with Post Apocalyptic LARPing.
Great info!
Thank you so much for making this Video! I'm currently creating a post-apo costume for an art project, and I didn't really know how to start. Thanks mate!
hey what are you using as a base to make a shoulderpart? feeling like they are always traveling down my shoulder and falling off.
then it aint about base, its about tightening it up properly as you wear it and also having that belt under your armpit. mine are always with two belts :)
Im a little late but Im planning on making an apocalyptic hitman loadout any help?

i dont know who that callum scott walker guy is but he sounds like my kind of guy
am I the only one who had to re-watch half the video because I got distracted by this handsome lad xD
What's that screw connecting the deer skull called?
heavymetal666 it would be a normal bolt (not sure on the size) but the nut is a wing nut or at least that's what they are called in aus should be available at any hardware store
Wing nut
I had forgotten about the cod piece...
That dancing deserves a like :)

Интересный канал, спасибо. А где ваша бабушка живет?
LOL, почему вы хотите знать, что?
Jadon Miller в одном из видео упоминалась бабушка из России, стало интересно откуда)
v Moskve :)
Plus it seems sensible thematically to go with a costume that isn't a giant safety hazard. Giving yourself tetanus wearing a costume is one thing. Someone in a post-apoc setting giving themselves tetanus, however... o3o
The human body is really squishy.
I am constantly saying this...
I was just wondering, why do I never see gas masks being worn in your costumes? The only gas mask I've seen is the bad snake.
Would you want to wear that on your face :P?
yes
they'd get really sweaty if you're at a long event i guess, even a half face mask wouldnt be very fun
Sehr gut
how the music in intro is named?
audiojungle stockaudio default dubstep metal track number something :D
thanks :D and also for inspiration :)
Tortured turtle in a shell that's too heavy for you
i want to make just simple farmer costume :D
then DO IT NOOOW!

Oooh, this is cosplay... my search continues.
Tortured turtle, nice
