    That block of titanium is nowhere near as thick as some of the comments below.

    people,... to everyone who keeps suggesting to him to "go thinner and get a greater number of knives out of a single piece of titanium," or "thinner would take less time", he said at the beginning, he was trying to make something different, an art piece. Stop nit-picking, the knife came out badass.

    CARVED OUT OF A FUCKING BLOCK OF TITANIUM
    Who the fuck does that
    This guy right here
    Cant believe you actually put the work in to make a knife out of a block of titanium.
    So much respect, and its such a beautiful knife as well.

    • @zhengbq
      @zhengbq 8 років тому +6

      Nah, you can't really machine tungsten carbide (WC). It is way harder than all of the tool steel, so any saw or drill made of tool steel will break upon trying to cut WC. Second thing about WC is that it is extremely brittle. It won't deform, but it will break into dangerous shards. All the WC products are made from sintering WC powder with some other binder materials. And BTW, fine WC powder is extremely hazardous, so polishing WC is not a good idea either.

    In all seriousness, that is actually amazing. You have taken a chunk of titanium and turned it into a work of art by just removing material. That really is a beautiful piece of art. You have very amazing skills, that you can see that in a chunk of titanium and have the skills to bring it out! Exceptionally nice work!!

    People often confuse the fact that titanium is incredibly tough and pretty darn hard, but it's not so hard that it even makes for a good knife because it can't hold an edge, it would actually roll over, though stay intact, so it cuts similar to high speed steel, tough alloy steel, almost malleable, as far as hard metals go, from what I understand. So the idea this will be an art piece is perfect, and I'm not very surprised you were able to cut it well enough. Cool projects, thanks!

      @@gabegonzalez5055 He clearly states that it was titanium, he tells us the alloy, and you can see the bright white sparks coming off it indicative of the high pyrophoricity of finely divided titanium. Steel sparks are far less abundant and more of an orangey-yellow color. Do you have any proof that it wasn't titanium?

    Looks like a knife that will not ever fail. How is titanium on edge holding and hardness? Can it be tempered after shaping?

    • @armageddonknives
      @armageddonknives  8 років тому +1

      titaniums ok, depending what your cutting. I would put it around the aus-8 level although it'll never get super sharp. you can carbadize titanium though to basically turn it into a fine hacksaw edge.

    • @armageddonknives
      @armageddonknives  8 років тому +1

      from my understanding no, titanium work hardens a little bit but can't be heat treated in the traditional sense

    • @jancohuman2486
      @jancohuman2486 8 років тому +2

      Get a titanium steel alloy , heattreatable but be carefull when tempering leave it in a oil bath at 600degrees for 5 hours after quenching at a bright orange colour , then it will be like spring steel and it will hold an edge , note use diamond and aluminum oxide sharpning stones to sharpen it ,works best for me

    I stumbled across this video while checking to see if anyone else sharpens their cooking knives with sandpaper (as my dad, an old-timey professional chef taught me to do) and what their techniques might be. I just hold about a 4x12 sheet concave in my palm and go at it with a circular motion @ 20 degrees. Has worked for me always, but I was just curious how other might do it, and youtube has put me here, and I'm an instant knife-making nerd. So much so, that I'm thinking of hitting up my metal-working friends to see what I can come up with if I can gain access to their sanding belts. This took me way back to my shop class in 9th grade using dremel tools and belts and saws. Tons of fun, thanks DB Blades! Your knife here reminds me of a couple of the C02 cartridge racing cars I've made. Slick and sexy.
    Now to actually sharpen my knives. Stoked I'm not the only one that loves making metal sharp using sand!!!

    I love art in it's sundry forms (painting, dance, fabrication etc) your knife-like sculpture certainly conveys the feel of a purposeful knife, you went through a learning curve with your medium of choice, and the finish with this difficult material speaks volumes for your dedication and patience. All this along with the pulchritude of your sculpture makes for a memorable piece of art.
    With millions of views for a knife makes appreciation for your artwork pretty manifest aswell.

    use a spray bottle with half water and half light oil when using tge v and saw. Now, if you were going to weld this titanium and had to follow some military or aerospace procedure, than DO NOT... use any oil and follow proper procedures. Now back to knife making. titanium is very sticky when it starts to warm up. the water will do great at keeping it cool, and the light oil will help lubricate it, (Very Important) keeping the chips from sticking between the teeth of the saw blade.

    Absolutely beautiful knife and may not seem practical but for an outdoorsman/camper it would actually be very useful. Folding a wash cloth and holding it along the spine hitting with a mini-sledge would make splitting wood extremely easy especially with how thick and tough the metal is. Drilling a 1/8" hole in the handle designed for a pin that you could slide a piece of tube steel over would make it useful as a brush cutting implement and so on. Many possible uses and very unique. Worth the time and effort you put into it. Bravo

      I can't find a similar block online, but I'd guess around $125-150 for the titanium alone, he specified almost $300 for belts, and 20-30 hours of work.
      Considering this guy is an experienced knife maker and this is a one of a kind knife, I wouldn't be surprised if he charged upwards of $40/hr on builds like these, if we use 25 hours of work to calculate cost, it comes out right near $1400, and since it was for a knife show, he could easily throw a couple hundred more on top since so many people would be seeing it.

    I'm master dental technician, and we cast Titanuium-alloy with purity level 99%. It has to occure under exclusion of oxygen, under protective Argon-gas atmosphere at 1668°C. At temperatures exceeding 480°C titanium alloys generally oxidises and forms a hard and brittle layer enriched with oxygen, which is called alpha case. Titanium is way less elastic then steel, not quite brittle, but for milling it's tenacious. BEAUTIFUL work on that knife, by the way!!

  • @hellrizerusa2797

    • @renjackson4249
      @renjackson4249 7 років тому +5

      Hellrizer USA it is, titanium is unbelievably brittle, if you try to forge titanium with a titanium hammer one of them or both of them will shatter like glass

    • @hellrizerusa2797

      Ren Jackson but still, how come titanium can easily stop bullets, yet you can break it with a hammer?

    • @renjackson4249
      @renjackson4249 7 років тому +10

      So, first off, the first statement I made is completely wrong, I just misheard someone. Now onto the main point, your statement is correct......sort of. Titanium can stop a bullet and a hammer strike, the thing that breaks it is when you continually hit it and cause vibrations throughout the material, this will wear it the molecular structure of the titanium, so it can stop a singular strike from both a bullet and a hammer, however it will eventually break after multiple hits.

    • @cow...5539
      @cow...5539 7 років тому +7

      Ren Jackson, the first comment you made was not completely off the mark. Pure titanium (probably what the knife is made of) is indeed VERY brittle and certainly cannot stop bullets.
      What Hellrizer is referring to is titanium alloy. High grade alloys are incredibly strong and can stop bullets. They are, however, absurdly expensive, and a couple of kilos can easily run up to several thousand US dollars.

      DannixX1000 He could have made 2 knifes if he split the metal's thikness in half.

      the thickness is what made this knife unique hence the whole purpose of doing it

      First: This isn’t forging. Second: It’s not meant for usability, it’s like he said earlier in the video, it’s more like a sculpture. Titanium isn’t good for knivemaking anyhow, too hard and from everything I understand, it doesn’t get a good edge like steel would. And the amount of work needed to split that behemoth of titanium in half would have been insane, his bandsaw literally couldn’t handle that workload. So not only would he have wasted double the material making 2 knives like you want, it also would have wrecked his bandsaw, and cost him double the amount on grinding, making it not only financially irresponsible, but just irresponsible in general.

      Justin McMullen I hear Titanium doesn't hold an edge well, despite being so hard.

      titanium accually makes a great blade material and it holds a very sharp edges very it's just really hard to shape and grind

      Even if a titanium knife was forged it would not be able to be heat treated and tempered properly and likely would be weaker than just the melted down manufactured ingot in the first place. So no in this case a forged knife would be a worse idea and harder to work with.
