Congratulations Jack Bodell ! You won this fight beyond any doubt , against the taller and heavier Bugner. Bugner had all the physical advantages and couldn't use them ! Jack looked like the champion in every round. R.I.P.
Bugner had been taken to spar with Bodell a few years prior to this. Bugner was still a raw novice and Bodell bossed him in sparring. I think this had a massive impact on both mens thinking going into this fight. Bodell fancied it Bugner didn't
No A.H.Smith, Thanks for your comment. I agree that early on the Cooper result was a factor but there was plenty of opportunity to turn that around. Best Wishes and thanks again.
Bodell looked decent against taller fighters. Against smaller types with a Frazier- like style, e.g. mcalinden, he had no defence of an overhand right. Don't forget Bugner was still only 21,a baby for a heavyweight.
I remember this fight. I'm 67 now. I said to my Dad, (who was a Qualified Boxing Referee, Judge and Ex Boxer himself), it looks like Joe Burner had taken a load of sleeping pills. I'm sure I saw him yawning in this fight. It was like, the horse turned up for the Grand National, but the Jockey was still in bed! The most puzzling contest I'd ever seen in a boxing ring! But well done Jack Bodell (RIP). I betcha he couldn't have believed his luck!!!
Everyone seems ignorant of why he never fought as expected. He never was a "great white hope". Do some research. One of Bugner early opponents DIED after the fight...Bugner was traumatised by that.
1960's Henry Cooper would also have beaten Bugner, provided his eyes held up. Hell, many think he beat Bugner anyway. I think even Brian London would have beaten him.
leeeastwood disputes that Jack was a hard man by saying Quarry stopped him in the 1st; well Pat Cowdell was a class act but it happened to him v Azumah Nelson, and Tony Mundine lost in the first v an over the hill Luis Rodriguez. It can happen to the best; oh, Quarry did the same to Earnie Shavers, he was another soft touch, wasn't he?
All those who think that the fans gave Bugner a hard time should look no further than this fight which says it all. It is hard to believe that he was a 3 time champion in prime condition defending his titles yet he lost so tamely to an honest but average fighter in Bodell, who never managed to last 2 rounds in his next three fights.
Henry- I think the main reason Bugner was unpopular after the Cooper victory was because the fans were shallow. They couldn't accept their hero got beat. It is if they almost wanted Bugner to lose to please them. He should have been allowed to enjoy his big moment. Bugner was inconsistent but he still went the distance with Frazier and Ali so in my book he is one of our top heavyweights. I also think xenophobia had a part to play as Bugner was born in Hungary.
I think Bugner thought to much and probably was afraid to get hurt - yet when in the ring with a great fighter he seemed to lose his inhibitions and fight like a man. His best fights were defeats! BTW when Ali fought him he never had to raise a sweat - just turning up for the money and swatting these also-rans
@hayward4591 Are you R W Smith? I saw your father and Bugner in Fenchurch Street in 1976 I remember it as Bugner was my favourite fighter. I think really all the public where against him in this fight after beating Cooper I would after Bodell lost to Jurglin Blinn Bugner beat the German to regain the European title.
Jack Bodell wasn't much of a boxer but bloody hell he had heartrt. Henry Cooper said as much. Bugnor? I don't know why he was ever a boxer, a bit like Joshua didn't want to get hit. Compare him with Ali and Frazier in the last fight they had together. Says it all.
Big Joe was a real poser, and frustrating at that. Though he has speed of hands and longer reach, he waits, and waits for Bodell to come to him. Jack was a plodder himself and this fight was not for purists !!
+david hulse Nonsense. Ali won comfortably enough and was of course well past his best, after 3 1/2 years out of the ring when he beat Bugner, who was one of the best British heavyweights but sometimes didn't do himself justice. He gave Frazier a hard fight, and took Lyle to a split decision. He was still good enough aged 48 to be Australian and WBF world champ. We never even saw the real prime of Ali, his years out of the ring, from 67-70, but he was already tremendous in 67. Don't forget Tommy Farr took Joe Louis the distance; does that show how overrated Louis was? Ali was best in 2 decades, despite his absence. Past his best he ko'd prime unbeaten Foreman who won a title 20 years later in the time of Holyfield and Lewis, despite 10 years out of the ring.
Silly comment. Bugner was given hell by the British public for being given a decision against Henry Cooper. He had no heart to fight then. He fought very well against far better men than Jack Bodell. You clearly just don't like Ali.
Joe never landed enough shots to win...bodell always hung his jaw out and bugner couldnt hit him...jerry quarry showed what needed to be done...although bodell took a decent shot...a few decent shots would have ended this...bugner never used his advantages
From what I've just watched, BUGNER is a disgrace to go in the ring with a real boxer. He just stands there as if he is in a fashion shoot. He ain't got no bottle atall.
If Bugner had half the courage of Champion Bodell he would have ruled the world; well done Jack, what a brave star you were.
Boxing is about skill, fitness, resilience, strength - but as this fight shows, also heart. Jack Bodell gave it his all and rightly won 🥊
RIP Jack Bodell. Not world class, but a decent fighter, as this fight demonstrates.
Met Jack a few times.......nice bloke.
Joe allowed Jack to do a number on him for 15 rounds... Only one person knows why Bugner failed to turn up for this fight... Jack Bodell 9/11/2016
Congratulations Jack Bodell !

I never realised Bodell was such a hard man.
he wasn't, he lasted 65 seconds against Jerry Quarry!!
@@leeeastwood6368 well, Ernie Shavers. didn't last much longer.
@@DavidJsmith-dk5tf, I'd forgotten about that. just been back and had a look. Quarry was just short of being one of the greats!

Bodell made the best of his limited ability, whereas Bugner did the opposite!!!!!
Bodell never won another fight after this win over bugner!!!!
Bodell looked decent against taller fighters. Against smaller types with a Frazier- like style, e.g. mcalinden, he had no defence of an overhand right.

John Hylton . Very true . Most people criticising Bugner don’t know that or if they do they do not take it into consideration . Very unfair of them .
Among British heavyweights, only Tommy Farr and Lennox Lewis surpass Bugner.
Fair play to Jack Bodell though; tough guy and good fighter.

@hayward4591 Right...
the fact that ali struggled twice against bugner show how overrated ali was.

david hulse . No it showed just how GOOD Bugner had become . And for anyone to suggest Ali was overrated is just sheer madness.
Bugner....could Box but couldn't Fight...nice bloke tho.

Bugner has got the most boring boxer ever to enter a ring.
From what I've just watched, BUGNER is a disgrace to go in the ring with a real boxer. He just stands there as if he is in a fashion shoot. He ain't got no bottle atall.
Two great honest boxers. Not like the crap Lewis, Tyson, Haye and Joshua.
What a disgrace this was for Bugner
