- In 1992, the boxing world was elated to hear that Evander The Real Deal Holyfield was finally scheduled to fight number one contender Riddick Big Daddy Bowe.
At the time, the undefeated Holyfield had been criticized for mainly fighting over the hill boxers like Larry Holmes and George Foreman. It was not yet known at the time that Foreman was still very much championship level. So there was no better fighter to prove his legitimacy than the young, very big, and very skilled Riddick Bowe.

Bowe, who had been brought in to spar as a young man during Holyfields train for cruiserweight fights back when Bowe was just an amateur, believed from experience that he had all the tools necessary to take the championship from Holyfield in a decisive fashion.
If nothing else, the unique styles possessed by both men would prove to make an interesting matchup.
HOLYFIELD STYLE
Holyfield’s strong, consistent rhythm was the backbone of his style. Holyfield’s constant motion meant that he always had momentum to put into his punches. Rather than commit more weight by stepping one foot at a time, Holyfield instead moved both feet together. This way he could execute more subtle, rapid adjustments than would otherwise have been possible. He could glide back and forth just at the edge of an opponents range, enticing them to overreach so that he could rebound right back to counter. Watching Holyfield at his best was like watching a violent ballet. Aside from footwork, Holyfield also used high guard, philly shell and cross guard tactics to stay safe. And this extra defense allowed him to effectively wrestle and in-fight against much larger men.
Often the man with the shorter reach, Holyfield’s infighting put him in range for rapid fire combinations, where he could expertly use one punch to set up the next. To top it all off, Holyfield was extremely intelligent, and would keep track of what he could hit you with and then build on it.
BOWE STYLE
In contrast to Holyfield’s high volume in and out style, Bowe was the quintessential boxer-puncher. He boasted one of the best jabs in boxing, and used it to control the ring and set up his harder shots. A fighter who can throw disciplined, tight shots and then suddenly transition to devastating haymaker’s is one of the most dangerous fighters to deal with. And Bowe could do this at both long range and close range, showcasing a signature power punch for each.
At long range, Bowe possessed a terrifying overhand right, which ended the night for many unfortunate opponents.
At close range, Bowe employed a powerful rear uppercut, which ruined the ambitions of many smaller competitors who had hoped to win the fight on the inside.
So many people focused on Bowes defense that they failed to realize how nuanced his defense was. By slipping, ducking, and sidestepping as he punched, Bowe could continue to apply pressure and close distance even while under attack. By intercepting an opponent’s jab with his own, Bowe stifled their ability to put together combinations, destroyed their rhythm, and made sure he wasn’t at risk of being outpointed.
But all of that aside, Bowe had one advantage that none of Holyfield’s competitors had enjoyed before. Having already sparred him as a young man, Bowe had been inspired by Holyfield’s techniques and work ethic, and knew exactly what to expect. And what he expected an absolute war. @@innertubez Underrated by who? He seems to have been fairly treated during his career, and he's widely regarded as one of the all time greats. I think The Ring had him at #11.
He's one of those where you could have put him in his prime in any era of boxing and he'd have been champ or a top contender.

I can't even imagine being Bowe in the 10th round. You knock a guy so hard he staggers, then lay shot after shot after shot and he just... doesn't fall down. Holyfield is something else.

@@JinhoIzanagawa would love to have seen Holyfield fighting Tommy Morrison before Morrison had the fight against Ray Mercer. After that mauling, Morrison was never the same fighter. He fu*ked up tho, because he didn't train properly for Mercer. 1 of the established commentators of the day, made a remark to his colleague, which he thought wasn't being recorded but it was heard. He said that Ray Mercer was a journeyman boxer and wasn't good enough to be World champion. Often wondered did Morrison buy into this school of thought and so got cocky and complacent in the weeks leading up to the fight in 1992.

@@stourleykracklite7663 Mr Holyfield was a tough tough scrapper in his prime(1989 to 1997). He deserves all the accolades thrown his way. However when boxing commentators think of the greatest of all time, he may not make the top 5 because of a simple fact. Holyfield was known first + foremost for his exceptional fighting skills at Cruiserweight. A lighter division.
These two Warriors had 3 hard fights, they went to war basically, but I love that they are good friends to this day

@@irvinmorales1409 disrespectful from that guy. Let's be honest though. Evander could get hurt in the ring at his age. Why risk his health for at most a couple hundred thousand bucks?. Some commentators seem to think that he's had bad financial advice and when the ass was ripped out of the stock market in the last crash in 2008, his investments suffered horrendously. I have looked into this but unable to verify it. Unless somebody else knows something I don't know about this...

This fight was thrilling to watch. They both were equal in the battle. This made the fight unpredictable and fun.
Bowe clearly won fight but holyfied very competitive bowe superior size made the difference as both fighters were equal in ability bowe could have been all time great if it weren't for mental health 8ssues

Could do it all distance fighting,clinch fighting big powerful with a lot of weapons... I newer to this day saw such a big guy to be that good and dangerous in clinch.

How can anyone find a reason to leave a dislike. The skills, heart, will and chins on show here are phenomenal. So is the guys breakdown of the fight. This is quality viewing all the way. What's their to dislike? Personally I feel this fight took so much out of Holyfield. Giving 30 pounds to a guy as good as Bowe was too much even for him. He should have retired after this despite the fact he did well in later years.. Just my opinion
Nah I disagree that Holyfield needed to call it a day after this fight, or even after the 2nd or 3rd fight with Bowe. However, he could easily have afforded to retire after he beat Mike Tyson for the 2nd time. Those fights against Lennox Lewis took far more out of him than Bowe did when he was only 31 or 32 years old. Against Lewis he was 37 or 38 years old.

6'2, 220 or so is small? I'm not sure I understand this perception people have that Holyfield was small. He wasn't. He was pretty average in size for a HW.

A fully dialed-in Bowe was a problem--great jab & way better inside than you'd expect from a guy with his size and build. Evander never totally figured him out even when he won. That said, Holyfield's heart & intelligence were just off the scale. I have no idea how he got that deep into the 3rd fight, much less got Bowe in real trouble

Great unappreciated classic fight. This turned out to be a great Trilogy!!
This fight and trilogy took everything from Bowe, the Win took away his fire and The trilogy took his soul, sadly was never the same afterwards
Well the first win definitely took his fire, but the other two fights didn’t take too much out of him. Bowe’s skills declined after 1993 due to lack of dedication to his training. What really took his soul were the two fights against Andrew Golata. Those two fights fucked up his brain, body and his very soul. Again, I don’t know how much he actually trained for those two fights since he wasn’t the same fighter from the first Holyfield fight, but I think in the golata rematch he actually took training more serious but still ended his career due to golata beating the shit out of him and the multiple cheap shots golata did to bowe

Unfortunately, Bowe tended to be really undisciplined outside of the ring and loved to eat which I can't blame him for. Safe to say, the first win over Holyfield might've been the best and worst thing that could've happened to him. After the first Holyfield win, his management team took over.

Holyfield got hit with sledgehammers this fight. And just took punch after punch.
He never hit the canvas tho. The one time you thought he was going to he picked himself up before he reached the ground.

I think this was Bowe at his absolute best. No one was beating him that night.
I agree. This was him at his peak. It says so much about Holyfield as well at this point. He was giving up 30 pounds to a peak Bowe. I don't think Holyfield was ever the same after this fight. And I wish Bowe hadnt ruined himself. Imagine how Bowe could have become if he had Holyfields attitude.

@@ContextReallyMatters The thing it's kind been forgotten that he had already been in plenty Cro-Magnon wars by the time this fight came round. Tyson and Bowe with their KO punch and weight could finish guys in one round but Holyfield would have battle them for 7 or 8 rounds, sometimes the full 12. He always amazed me how he would have enough power to absolutely daze his opponents but usually not get them out quick enough. He did it with Mercer, Foreman, Tyson and Lewis. And top it all he was a 15 round fighter to boot. The description warrior is used all the time in boxing nowadays. So what word is there to describe Holyfield?

Great breakdown of one of the greatest heavyweight fights I remember watching. Holyfield is such a warrior, barely a cruiser weight and still beating these big guys. I wanted Holyfield to win this fight and by golly he tried. You can't feel the fight like it was in this abridged breakdown. It was EXCITING. And Bowe's awesome inside fighting made the difference in my opinion. This was arguably Big Daddy's best fight. I love your videos man. I still have the poster.
I've been arguing for years that this was the greatest heavyweight championship fight of all time. Usually I get mocked, but it had more action than the Thrilla in Manilla and more power punching than Louis-Conn I... I stick by my belief

Even though Holyfield lost this fight he gained me as a fan. I was already a fan, but really bought into him after this. That 10th round was epic. I remember thinking: "I knew he had it in him! I knew it!" I believe Holyfield gained a lot of fans through this fight who became part of his loyal fan base and "Team Holyfield". After this fight - and subsequent fights - he ended up being my favorite fighter of the 90's.

Me too. The fact he fought the way he did against a guy at his peak who was 30 odd pounds heavier than him amazed me. He had already been in countless savage wars already. He could have retired after this fight. It must have taken something out of him. When he came back heavier I thought he lost a bit of speed and rhythm. I always get annoyed about the headbutt shit. He does what boxers have done for a hundred years. Get your head down and on to your opponents chest or shoulder. Especially if your fighting guys bigger than you.
@@georgegreig8054 The headbutt stuff was BS. I remember Tyson deliberately ran into his head to try to get out of the first fight. Tyson obsessed over it and used it as excuse to bite Holyfield’s ear the second fight. Lewis also complained about it, but he was a dirty fighter - constantly leaning on Holyfield, endlessly holding, rabbit punching, etc. Also, agree that Holyfield wasn’t quit as quick after this fight and didn’t have quit the same rythm. I noticed that difference in his second fight against Stewart. The first fight he was like a machine gun with those combos.The second fight against he didn’t really break down Stewart the way he did the first fight. He was a real boxer-puncher up to the Bowe fight. His style after this wasn’t as speed based and had a little less reliance on movement. He was still quick, but he didn’t have as much of that rapid-fire quickness of his first HW reign.
@@mmcneil777 I never heard a murmur about head butts until the Tyson fight. And I remember the incident your talking about. When you see the slow-motion replay I always laugh. Tyson smashes his head into Holyfield and makes a pained face and bleats to the referee while Holyfields expression doesn't change. He reacted as if he had been hit with a feather rather than a 220 pound man deliberately full force head butting him.

I grew up watching the stuff. I'm a Holyfield guy but have so much respect for both these Champions have their craftsmanship in the trilogy. It chokes you up period as a kid I watched Ali and Fraser and foreman and Kenny Norton and all those guys. We hadn't seen that kind of heart since the seventies as well as skill. Excellent video

Was 21 when I watched this in the early hours. Still marvelling at 50 how Bowe’s uppercut did not decapitate Holyfield. Mans a warrior. Excellent analysis as always 👌

What an unbelievable contest and fight with huge heart and fortitude from both boxers. The constant hard exchanges mixed with the best strategy they could both muster during this epic match was epic and the seemingly careful observation they managed to each other’s reactions amidst the constant fray and often balls to the wall multiple torrent-trading of one-for-one hard exchanges was truly surreal. It’s absolutely amazing they each stood to the bitter end of 12. What also made it such a good presentation to me personally was the great analytical commentary. Superb!

This is the best sport Channel in UA-cam. I watch boxing casually and never trained. Watching these videos makes me want go back and watch All fights again as you share so much knowledge about what is happening.
I remember watching this fight when I was a little kid. It was crazy action like watching a movie fight. When talking about greatest heavyweight fights of all times this fight is so underrated and should be part of the conversation. Both of their fights were crazy action packed fights.

Hi and thank you for breaking down this epic slugfest. I would also be very thankful if you made a breakdown of Ike Ibeabuchi. In my opinion, he had it all, from what I've seen he could always throw punches from every angle, and he was very energetic, strong and had the endurance aswell(he and David Tua once held the record for most punches thrown in a heavyweight fight, which was around 1730. To my amazement he kept brawling the entire fight without slowing down, similar to this Bowe vs Holyfield fight). Ike vs Holyfield and Tyson would have been dream fights. It is very disappointing to know how Ike's career was cut short.
