My grandfather and grandmother were homeless in LA in the 50s with 5 kids. They lived in a park that had a creek or stream running through it. My grandfather was on foot every day going to his part time job as a maintenance man, he was able to provide for his family minimum necessities and saved the majority of his earnings to get bus tickets for his family to go back to Kansas. Then he was able to be a farm hand and then became a taxi driver in Wichita then went to be a ship mate on a tug boat on the Mississippi. He eventually was able to reside permanently in Kansas. He raised 10 children. All of which have served in the military and or Graduated from University.
I am a second generation native Californian. I left 2 years ago. Between the crime, drugs and cost of living it became undoubtedly. I was homeless for many years, I didn't live in tent city's. I actually went camping in the woods in summer, desert in the winter. I moved to Georgia, lower cost of living. A lot less crime, in my area. Jobs plentiful, haven't been homeless since. California has slowly become a shithole.
Yep. It's been like that for such a long time. People just want to talk about the weather but don't realize that LA provides a numerous amount and wide range of services for the homeless. Much more than other cities outside of California. I worked for the DHHS during and after the recession and we ran into so many problems. The best answer we have is more services but the surveys we did showed that homelessness increased the next year after more services were provided. It was hard to keep track of the homeless population because a lot of those folks have no proper identification. I'd say about 2/3 of the 1000 or so that I personally interviewed were originally from other states. A LOT from the Midwest and Texas. Determined that it was because they don't provide any services aside from Salvation Army and church organizations.
Ri true. But the thing is we are devaluing homeless people.... even saying “homeless people” just doesn’t sit right with me for some reason. It feels as If you separate them from “regular people”; there are cases that if you provide a person who doesn’t have a home with one, a good job, and mental health services they will do better and help boost the economy because you don’t have to keep launching homeless services and shelters that cost more money than it does to just house someone in a nice home.... I don’t get why these governments are so greedy.
Joe is right. I went to LA and it was pretty bad, but San Francisco is on another level. LA’s homeless keep to themselves for the most part, SF’s will go up to you/beg a lot more.
It's a real shame it seems that people don't know exactly how many of these homeless people are your own veterans. The world we live in is truly messed up 😪
@@adjuster57 they don't lol. lots of illegals working the jobs you'd refuse to do, for pennies. 😂😂 how about you go after the billionaires--the folks who horde massive amounts of money in offshore accounts while they point at the brown skinned man making $7.25/hr to clean office bathrooms, saying "HE'S to blame!!!"
I was homeless for a few years until about 2 years ago (in Australia). One thing preventing a solution to the homeless "problem" anywhere in the world is the fact that there are quite a lot of people who actually enjoy the life living on the streets believe it or not. The bad days and nights are REALLY BAD! But there is also a level of freedom that you can't experience with any other lifestyle.
That's why you need an offer for homeless people and a punishment if they don't take it - if you want to keep big cities in first world countries (like Berlin) a lifeable place for families.
I was homeless for 2 years in Atlanta, Georgia. I avoided everywhere where homeless people congregate. I learned to navigate to different coffee shops and libraries everyday. I pitched a tent at night on the property of a business that never knew I was there. The only thing I kept from my old life was my laptop, that's what kept me connected to the world. It took a lot of effort to stay clean and groomed, but for the most part people didn't know I was homeless. People would ask me if I was going on vacation (backpack and luggage in tow). I'd just say yes. There are a lot of homeless people who are not crazy or drug addicted, but you won't see them. The ones you see have all lost hope of ever getting off the street. When you lose hope, despair comes next and it's all downhill from there.
@@TrailerTrashThorne I only commented about this because I think a lot of people think there is a big difference between themselves and the homeless people they see on the street and for their sake I hope they never have to realize there isn’t a difference. Literally every single person I thought cared about me and whom I cared for turned out to be a fake. I came through the experience and I’m glad it happened to me, because it gave me the opportunity to see what is really important in day to day life. I learned how to tell the difference between who is important to me and who isn’t. It’s an important lesson, but one which everyone could do without. Today, I have a good life, but I don’t take anything for granted.
@@August_Fields Man, I have Federix Ataxia. It's like ALS but slower with it deteriorated but I'm 30 so it's starting to get pretty shitty. What I'm saying though is I feel like I relate with everything you've said. I love the person I am even though that person is the outcome of a daily struggle.
@@TrailerTrashThorne I'm so sorry you have this ailment. I knew a man who had ALS. He was a coworker's husband. Once, I watched him walk through a fire pit! Right over the coals! I guess it's just a part of everyone's life, Federix Ataxia or not. Don't know why. But I can say this, your attitude will make you the kind of person that people want to be around, if that's what you like, or you can withdraw. There's nothing wrong with that either. I've done it many times. I've looked at the end of my life a few times and the one thing I took away from it was maybe it's better to engage other people, even if they're jerks, to get the positive feedback from the one's who aren't, when you find them. You wouldn't believe the things I've seen people do when no one's watching. I used to work in the medical care industry and there were plenty of times I saw the very worst in people, and other times I saw the best in people. And you would never be able to predict which ones would be which. I hope tomorrow is a good day for you. As you say, every day, well it's every day's struggle. So good luck tomorrow my friend.

Born and raised in Los Angeles. I was an Uber driver from 2014 to 2018, and little by little every year I saw how quickly LA was just deteriorating. Population of homeless was small , then medium then large and now who the hell knows I don’t drive in downtown area no more.
Lets be honest. When the story is about something negative, crazy or something that could get you in trouble its SMART for these people to not say the name of that person in front of 100+ million people.
I'm a native Californian and I cannot believe what has happened to my beloved home state. I come home once a year and every year it looks worse and worse. My best advice is get the heck out...
I love LA it'll always be my home but I had to leave back in 2010. I was 33 years old, 3 months behind on rent, no car, and had to live with a heroin addicted roommate just to be able to eat. The writing was on the wall. Best decision I ever made
Much appreciated, though they probably won't accept it. Still, we are thankful for the attempts to help our countrymen, even if they brought it on themselves. We will send ample aid the next time an earthquake strikes.
Sadly, the US has enough good land to feed a billion people. I'm not really sure how there are so many homeless. It's just not that hard to be successful here.
I remeber trying to convince my friend to not go to LA because I'd seen that it was like that but she was convinced it was a beautiful place filled with celebrities bright lights and beautiful scenery. She looked traumatised when she came back 2 days later, she was supposed to go for a week
Your story is very similar to one of an aunt and uncle. They went on a vacation to India. Decided to just see the Taj Mahal and get the hell out of there. Filth everywhere like they couldn't imagine.
That’s why everyone from California is moving to Texas. I swear I meet a new Californian every day. They talk about how our $100,000 houses would be 1.0 mil in California.
In California most of the money you pay for a house is not for the house itself but the location. In my opinion it's really not worth it even if the weather is nice. I'm not paying a 500-600% more because they have more sunshine.
Were having the same problem in Arizona. Not too bad were very accommodating people, but their bringing the ideas and votes that destroyed their state with them.
Grew up in Southern California in the late ‘90’s. Soon after graduating high school, even back then, I quickly realized that for a single young adult to try to make it there was next to impossible. I moved to Idaho where I went to college, and met my wife, and never went back to CA. My family all still lives in CA. I go back and visit once or twice a year. The second I drive back across the border into Idaho, I literally get out of the car, kiss the ground, and say a prayer of thanks for where I live. My home State gets worse and worse, every time I go back. It makes me so sad and depressed. I can’t stand to visit for more than about a week before I am homesick and want to go back to Idaho.
Interesting. I have two close friends here in CA from Idaho who have no plans of ever returning. It's all a matter of perspective- people will move wherever they feel most comfortable.

I was homeless for 30 days in April of 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Hence my name) Even vlogged about it a bit. I had setup in my 2005 Suburban, and slept in the parking lots of Wallmart, Krogers, and the gym I used to keep clean/bathed. I was 20 at the time, and moved down here to escape an abusive household when I was 19. Nobody knew I was homeless. I got into a rental when I was done, and one year later I didn't have enough money for food. So I went days at a time without eating. I was 21. Last year I Purchased a home in April of 2021, I was 23 (I'm now 24) Don't ever quit. Make a plan. Stick to it. Go.

Ive been waiting since April when I bonded out for a bed in shelter. Still no beds available. Finish my degree in May and its fucking cold at night. Have a job and just saving but its easier to do smack when ur sleeping in ur car to pass time. Vicious cycle with no solution.
I was homeless and I have worked with homeless vets. About 95% of them are homeless due to addiction. As to why the problem is concentrated more in one city vs another has a lot to do with policy (if you are homeless person friendly, such as extensive social services for homeless people) law enforcement (policy regarding removing them) and weather.
@@lilfeetz1587 That's hilarious. Ever stop to think that the Rethuglicans - that Bastion of loving Christians - run the homeless out of their small towns, make it illegal to feed them, and abuse them in mass numbers? I mean the population has almost doubled in the last 60 years also, theres only so much land and everyone wants a front row seat, don't want to be inconvenienced having to drive 20-30 minutes... to many people not enough houses. Not saying thats the only problem but thats atleast one part of the problem that isn't based on greed.

Housing is unaffordable for a single person. I struggle and I dont do drugs or drink and was homless here in Canada 2 years ago with a child. Single widowed father could not get help anywhere. Its lack of affordable housing. #1
I'm the same way. I've never used any drug, never had a sip of alcohol, never smoked a cigarette, and I don't even drink caffeine. I've never been in trouble with the law, and don't do bad things like stealing. I've been homeless off and on many times in my life. It's not because I'm a bad person, I just have mental illness. Mine is that I'm afraid of everyone and I'm a shut-in. I'm the cleanest, quietest person you'll ever meet (not exaggerating), but because I'm completely alone and afraid of everyone, making money to live is hard. I live in a place with almost zero homeless people, and still there aren't any resources available.
House prices are soaring like crazy. It is due to the housing bubble crash in 2008. It still hasn't recovered. People are paying half a million dollars on a house that cost 150k ten years ago. That is outrageous.
And why would that be? Because there is unlimited labor immigration (pushing wages down and housing up) and unlimited, zero tariff trade with China (pushing wages down).
But we have all these millionaires from LA taking pictures with "Starving kids in Africa" but they literally not helping their next-door neighbours. 🙄🙄

Correct me if I am wrong.. I feel one of the reason there are homeless people in USA is because people leave their home after 18yr old. They are on their own. And when they are not able to earn money for some reason. They don't go back home. People shame you if you are grown up and live with your parents who already have home. In Asia India Pakistan atleast kids stay with parents always. Some do leave if it needs for job purpose but there is no system of leaving parents. So if for some reason one is not able to earn for a while they stay with parents.

At any time, any one of us can end up homeless. Once we no longer have money to pay taxes or buy things we are completely discarded by society as we now no longer have things to be taken. It is a disgrace how the homeless are abandoned by our country. There but for the grace of God go I.

"It's like a third world country." I've been to Mexico, Thailand, and Cambodia and there aren't masses of people living in tents like that. That is the equivalent of a super underdeveloped third world country that has people fleeing wars.
yeah for the most part the monetarily poor mostly have quite enough to live. the lack of global violence and crime helps, but some places still have either marauders or insufficient material or “tribe” support to survive.
Yep, FAR more homeless in the US than in Thailand and Cambodia. Several reasons - 1. confuscianism - people are MUCH more likely to get a roof over their heads or food with the assistance of their direct or extended family, or community. 2. the death penalty for hard drug trafficking. There is still a bit around, but nothing even close to what you see in the US. Much less in the way of hard drugs, much less homelessness.
“They live” was a movie with rowdy Roddy piper in it about aliens. It was pretty kick ass for what it was. But the guys on the podcast are talking about the documentary about the homeless obviously. Only seen the movie sorry!
It is what it is. Politicians talk a big talk to get elected, while they line their pockets. It is too easy to blame just one thing though, it is a multifaceted issue that the people are fed up with.
I own a remodelling business. I travel all over the region (Southeast) completely renovating flip houses and rental houses for clients. I will be in a location for around 2 to 3 months. I travel so much that I am voluntarily homeless. I didn't see the point in keeping a permanent location that I never used. I have a trailer sailboat that I tow and live on if there is a body of water, stay in campgrounds, and I just purchased a bus to convert part of to a camper. I make good money but this is the lifestyle that I choose. It does seem strange to most people but I have a happy life and enjoy living in a new place and then moving on. On a side note, I do tend to help homeless people that I meet when I travel when I can. I even let a guy who just got out of jail sleep on my boat and gave him a ride to a town 2 hours away the next day because I was headed that way. My friends think I am crazy for that but he was so grateful.
This is California - every city, SF, Oakland, San Diego. The government here is lost, let people suffer on both sides (homeless and non-homeless). So dirty.
Those homeless people shouldn't worry, because California made a new regulation requiring new homes to come with solar panels. That should make homes more affordable.
Berkeley gives solar panels to their "homeless" along w "porta-potties". And, if you go to one of their shelters & the shelter is at max occupancy, they'll rent a hotel room for you (honest truth, and it won't be a Motel 6 type, it'll be a $200/nt room, insane).
The rent is getting to a point where regular people can't afford it anymore. We never had this problem 20 or 30 years ago where us regular people could afford the rent. I live in Massachusetts and the rents here are getting just as bad. Really sucks.
this country is becoming that this is happening everywhere. People like to say well California is a liberal this or that which is just propaganda that the whole system is f'd. But it makes people feel safe to be on a team right or left it does not matter.

Parl Kilkington ....how? Literally how? You take one city’s homeless problem and somehow the whole US is a failure? Thats like saying because Manchester in the UK has lots of crime the UK is a failure. How is it a failure when we have the most advanced technology, a population that is richer and has higher wages than most European countries, a currency/economy/military that everyone relies on, an influential system of law and politics, and culture and ideals that is being exported around the world. How is that even remotely a failure?
its beyond skid row. i live in the san gabriel valley, a upper middle class and wealthy valley 20 miles east of downtown L.A. 2008 fucked the middle class. residential and commercial real estate has been dominated by mainland Chinese firm and their rich and ultra rich. they were given huge loans at near 0 interest in the late 90's by Chinese banks with the sole purpose of inflating property values.
I grew up in Boston. It is definitely a huge problem there. Melena Cass Blvd is a huge problem, they now call it Tent City cuz thats where all the homeless congregate. And cops and EMTs just sit across the street waiting to Save people who Overdose. The problem is there are just TOO MANY people to do anything about it. BUT Baker has tried to do a LOT to help solve the problem of Homelessness and addiction. My mother actually volunteers for a program that is dedicated to helping the homeless get housing in the Boston area. And they have been VERY successful! A lot of places that have beds require people to be sober too. so that also is a factor.
The world is harsh place. Thanks to Mr Peterson, I have been reading carl Jung. The world is even more brutal than it seems. I am from India. It's even more worse here. Be grateful for what you have.
Thank you for that, whenever people complain about not having help or resources here in the US i laugh and tell them third world countries dont have shit. We have all the resources needed to live but our homeless only care about theyre addictions and dont want any help.

I am a British woman & I went travelling to America visited San fran L.A and vegas (saw some places in between too) me my baby brother older sister mom dad and grandad all went. Me and my Sister wanted to go for a walk when we got to San Fran because we were hungry and it was like near enough the middle of the night and I have genuinely never been so scared in my entire life just walking down the street. There was so much shit going on like actual fights and arguments one side of the road and homeless people screaming high as fuck on the other side. We ran into some shopping mall got food and basically ran home. My sister and I decided we should take a short cut down some road that looked empty enough there were a few tents but that was it. As we went to walk down there some lovely guy ran up to us and shouting “woah woah where you going” my sister thinking he was trying it on with us told him to get lost but he quickly realised we were tourists and said “no seriously you do not wanna go down there girls not on your own what hotel are you staying at?” To which i said a hotel over the r road from our actual one just to be safe and he booked us an Uber to go back to our hotel after he could see we were so shook up. Fuck Sanfran. Then again L.A was nearly just as bad if not as bad and S.F. We just knew not to walk around on our own at night there.
When I was 15 I was riding through downtown LA passing by skid row to head back home with a couple of homies on our BMX bikes and there were two dude tweaking out on skid row and other homeless were like looking at them and of course my friend decides to go down that block, so we are passing by them two guys and no lie they start chasing us screaming and throwing stuff as we pass and just start chasing us for like 2 block. Idk what happen but that was crazy and My adrenaline was through the roof 😂
Can confirm. Tents and needled everywhere. The government here tries to be compassionate about homelessness but it's mostly encouraging it and ruining the city.
JonnyBeoulve yup, I know thinking of the government being in any way totalitarian is scary but something needs to be done wether these homeless people want to abide or not. The problem is only getting bigger and bigger.
E’raan Lue, sooooo pharmaceutical companies are making homeless people? How about drug testing people for free benefits🤷♂️ Think that might help, pumpkin
We get the same thing in Seattle and the weather here is nothing special. And there's druggies in every city. Homelessness is mostly about housing costs and housing costs are mostly about land-use policy. In cheaper cities all the druggies can gang up in some abandoned crackhouse. But here the crackhouse gets bulldozed and replaced with million dollar condos because developers have to do in-fill development when they aren't allowed to build outside the growth boundary.
@@Yumemaru. how not? Absolutely nobody is forcing any homeless person to stay in a certain area and be a junkie. It really isn't difficult to get a job with a liveable wage, these fuckers just choose not to because then they'd have to deal with actual responsibilities.
@@tonyolen1381 So in 2016 I made $10.15 an hour (2.90 above the current federal minimum wage). Two 39 weeks would land me almost exactly $700 after taxes (no health insurance). For a crappy 2 bedroom apartment about 7 miles from the large city I currently live next to (I live here for school so I can't just "move away") my rent + utilities is $900, car insurance $150. So just living and being able to drive left me with $350 a month for everything else (keep in mind I had no health insurance). Do you see a problem with this? A 2013 statistic had that the bottom 80% of Americans owned 7% of the nation's wealth. The largest employer in my state is literally Walmart. These "good jobs" you speak of are a pipe dream. You're looking down on people for not making money, you need to realize it's the people writing the paychecks that are generating the issue.
It's hard to tell if so many people are homeless due to personal issues, irresponsibility, and/or because of high taxes and low income. It's even harder to say how we can fix it or if we even can/should if we don't know what the cause is on a case by case basis.
@Daniel Almanza If that's how you want to assess my comment, fine. I'm not from the US, so I can tell as many jokes as I like. And you're free to point out the ridiculously terrible situations in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Greece, the UK, and other countries in the EU. I'm sure you can come up with some.
It's capitalism's philosophy of taking as much as the market can bare from everyone and screw everyone else. Realestate investors are taking everything and jacking up rent and properties to the point nobody can afford to live there.
Living in LA for the past 28 years is like having a front row seat to the fall of Rome. This place is a mess.

Amazing Story
I am a second generation native Californian. I left 2 years ago. Between the crime, drugs and cost of living it became undoubtedly. I was homeless for many years, I didn't live in tent city's. I actually went camping in the woods in summer, desert in the winter.
I moved to Georgia, lower cost of living. A lot less crime, in my area. Jobs plentiful, haven't been homeless since.
California has slowly become a shithole.
Other cities give their homeless people bus tickets to LA.
South park episode lol
And then LA is shipping them out other parts of California.
And seattle. Fuck them bums.
Joe is right. I went to LA and it was pretty bad, but San Francisco is on another level. LA’s homeless keep to themselves for the most part, SF’s will go up to you/beg a lot more.

Preach!
@@TrailerTrashThorne I only commented about this because I think a lot of people think there is a big difference between themselves and the homeless people they see on the street and for their sake I hope they never have to realize there isn’t a difference.

So if for some reason one is not able to earn for a while they stay with parents.

yeah for the most part the monetarily poor mostly have quite enough to live. the lack of global violence and crime helps, but some places still have either marauders or insufficient material or “tribe” support to survive.
Yep, FAR more homeless in the US than in Thailand and Cambodia. Several reasons - 1. confuscianism - people are MUCH more likely to get a roof over their heads or food with the assistance of their direct or extended family, or community. 2. the death penalty for hard drug trafficking.

My sister and I decided we should take a short cut down some road that looked empty enough there were a few tents but that was it. What’s happens when a big city turns liberal
Great weather + drugs + high housing costs = a butt load of homeless people.
