Lonely Porcupine QUILLS Her New Mate | The Secret Life of the Zoo | Nature Bites

- An older porcupine is introduced to a new mate in the hopes that they'll make some pups - but will she quill her new "toy-boy" boyfriend?
The porcupine is the prickliest of rodents, though its Latin name means “quill pig.” There are more than two dozen porcupine species, and all boast a coat of needle-like quills to give predators a sharp reminder that this animal is no easy meal. Some quills, like those of Africa's crested porcupine, are nearly a foot long.
Clips from The Secret Life of the Zoo Season 3 Episode 5: Rhino Kifaru is attempting to mate, despite his arthritic knees, tapir Jenny falls ill, widowed porcupine Roxy meets a new, younger mate, and a flamingo chick goes missing.
From The Secret Life of the Zoo: This series gives viewers behind the scenes access to Chester Zoo's 21,000 animals and the people who work there. The zoo's keepers are interviewed in each episode about the various animals and incidents, whether it's orangutans escaping their enclosure or tigers getting into scraps.

I can't believe they just let him out of his enclosure and gently shoo him with brooms across the park to his new one. That's so funny.
lmao seriously... is this just a quirk of Britain? I cannot imagine that happening in the US... they'd absolutely get it into a carrier and move it that way to the new enclosure. I know it has quills, they'd probably use a similar idea as those brooms to get it to go into the carrier... but to just corral it casually across the zoo down the main walkways... lol like wtf
They don't move fast and it was the zoo was closed at the time. So it's not that unbelievable
6:30 Anyone notice that spider crawling on her shoulder in the dark?... 😬
6:30 the spider casually on her jacket 😀
So adorable. Plus those Meerkats are funny! It's like they have a cheering section. 💜✌
That's true
6:30 girl you should take a look at your shoulder
She's chillin' with spike-u-pines, that spider prolly doesn't bother her.
i knoO!!! Theres no way she noticed ,...no ones that w/it
😂
with those brooms, it was like a spiky game of curling lmao
"Loneliness" is not just a human term. I'm a dog trainer and behaviorist. Social animals do experience loneliness. Which is why, for many of these creatures that we keep as pets, it can be cruel to only have one.
In Switzerland, it is illegal to keep only one guinea pig or parrot (maybe other species too) as a pet. They get lonely and can die of loneliness. So in Switzerland, keeping only one of these animals is considered animal cruelty.
I've seen loneliness in dogs quite often as well.
Animals do vary in their need for socializing both by species and individuals, just like us. My Dachshund mix prefers to be an only child.
I kind of like the idea of zoos keeping 2 or more kinds of animals together
I love the orangutan's reaction!😂
I love Roxy
6:30 she a had a black spider crawling on her shoulder 😳😆
I didnt see her quill him. Cute story but why put a title that isnt the truth??
Sam so pretty. 😍
Very nice video. That animal is so cute
2:04
"what do you MEAN 5 people to 1?"
😍
The title is mistitled. I got tricked.
Did anyone we that spider crawling on that girls jacket? I would have flipped dog terds if that was me,...either it was nice and just crept away unnoticed or,.....she's impressivey brave! i admit of jealousy at that lol
It was a night vision clip... we can see the spider easily, but for her in that moment it would've been a lot darker and difficult to see something like that spider.
Couple of maddams
That's it
they look itallian
Sam seems more interesting
3rd 🥉
Let’s not equivocate “love” with the instinctual and physiological necessity of breeding, shall we?
