"Strumming" the Piano? Thinking Like A Guitar Player

- Other instruments are a great source of ideas on playing technique. In particular, guitar accompaniment strumming patterns can be translated to the piano with a bit of thought. In this piano lesson we will be "strumming" some chords on the piano, and I'll also show you how to come up with your own patterns. Have fun!
*thinking like a guitar player*
hey there's no tabs for this thing
Just try tabs for Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September End". For me it sounds quite similar.
lol fuck off
Keys is just PITCH...I'll play around you all day long, That includes modulating between the 5 parallel scales (35 modes/chords) and rapid multiple keys shifting.
There's no key signature for the other 4 diatonic scales...God forbid i play the Full diminished (WH.HW) or whole tone scales...Or play all 12 notes.
Which might take you decades to learn how to read 30 sec worth of music .
You wont be able to site read effectively...Sometimes it happens too fast...I 'll purposely play those notes.Tabs created by piano player or PC generated are RETARDED,..Not unless you wanna fuck up your hand
Dude was kidding. Jesus guys
Great Video clip! Sorry for chiming in, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you tried - Rozardner Possess Violin Reality (do a google search)? It is a great one off product for understanding how to master the piano without the headache. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my close friend Aubrey at very last got excellent results with it.
As a guitar player. I can confirm, this is how I started playing piano. I transferred the individual notes to find chords, and played exactly like that.
haha same as I for piano to guitar, and I've been playing guitar for 3 years because of it
I've been playing guitar for almost 5 years, and piano for about 2. :) MUSIC!
Samwise Supreme I'm currently doing the same as a piano player learning guitar
Hahahaha so true, as a guitar player also I play piano like this... Im glad to clarify I'm not weird after all 😂😂😂
Samwise Supreme when did you start playing piano?
Sorry guys, I forgot to take this part of me choking up off in editing and you get me unfiltered starting a new take (that's what the handclap is for ... ). It's just 10-20 seconds.
Thanks Richard. We all know it's that onion to blame.
You're human, so you had a little throat issue, no matter!
I get you want to produce a polished video, but we are just grateful you share your knowledge, so be it a little cough or your dear little cat, we don't mind at all, so save yourself time in editing those out, just carry on!
Thanks for your time! Love the videos!
np
MangoldProject liked the video better with the mistake, shows your a relatable human not a piano god
popped up on my home page...super helpful though! thank you
I clicked thinking this was gonna be able open your piano and literally strumming the actual piano strings.
Oh, it's only a figurative title. Didn't mean to mislead.
It's cool.
Jonathan K. Try listening to "Take a Pebble" by Emerson, Lake & Palmer to see how that works :)
I like your imagination
emrebaskocak I gave part of it a listen, it's very interesting!
Next up: "Hitting" the piano? Thinking like a drummer
But then you realize that piano is a percussion instrument and is located with the rest of the percussion in the band.
Groot 😂😂😂
Lol
Um yeah when I play with a punk band, I do exactly that!!!
Lol, I kind of do this though in certain songs on my baby grand; literally knocking the side bar to imitate fills, or playing certain notes and chords with extremely aggressive and rhythmic staccato. I know it seems odd, but really, playing instruments like other instruments can enhance a composition.
Oh my goodness. This is the holy grail! I can only play chords and the sound is not “full”. Certainly there was a “trick” to sounding like a real piano player! This is great! Now I just have to practice! Thank you!!
ive been playing classical piano many years but this blew my mind! feels good to be able to play outside sheet music. thanks mangold
There's a pretty big unexplained influx of views to this video these past few days (Jan 12, 2017). I'd appreciate it if you guys would reply to this comment and say how you came across this video. Thanks!
MangoldProject it was on the frontpage of MY youtube~ probably suggested. (I play other instruments)
MangoldProject it was in my recommend. I'm a guitar player learning piano. Interesting video!
MangoldProject Got here from my suggestions too, great video!
In my recommended side bar- I'm a Guitar player trying to learn the Piano! Really good video. Changed my perspective on piano chords.
Kieran Wilson I'm right there with you! I've been a guitar player for a bit of time now and really wanted to pick up a new instrument and piano just happens to be that.
This was also in my recommended and I must say I am beginning to really like this channel. So concise and informative all while keeping me engaged in the video to further myself.
thats actually great, thanks.. would love more of "use guitar knowledge/style on piano"
I can't say I have a lot of these insights. Strumming is probably the most effective one, but we'll see :)
I'm a guitar player, and I enjoy your lessons very much!
Thanks! Getting compliments from players of other instruments is really a big honor.
5:04 well, hello there!
....
+Enquirer1979 the was a kitty,
Francesco Greek x3
5:01 he gives birth to a kitty
Don't trigger me :)
Haha😺😸😻😽😼😹
😂
I am laughing to tears, and cannot focus to his lesson anymore!!
@dead account. there's a cat under where he's sitting so it looks like he "gave birth to it". Just a small joke lol
the clapping actually was interesting it made Me pay attention more.
thank you for the lesson, I appreciate your videos every time.
Haha, it's a good thing I didn't cuss when losing a take, which I sometimes do. Don't tell anyone :)
The sounds were so soothing that I can play for hours 😌. As I can play guitar as well all I can say is that you can strum up and down on piano 😄
Cat says hi at 5:04
BSdns the cat just wanted to be in the video X3333
You just blew my mind!!! This is awesome! Thanks for such a clear explanation! :)
That cat :D
She has a habit of popping up in my videos when I least expect her :)
I just wanna say you are amazing! You explain things so clearly and have such applicable content. Playing songs for church I can always find the guitar chords and have to make my own arrangements all the time. This is SO helpful! Thank you thank you!
I just realized that changing the voicing of the different notes of the chord, was a very clever thing to do as it made the strumming pattern clearer.
As always --- wonderful ! But, an additional thought: to give it even more of a "strum" feel. Move one of the left-hand notes into the right hand, and then "roll" the right hand. Why ? Because strums are almost always not notes played in unison, but rather the strum quickly arpeggiates/brushes across the notes. And a big thanks !
5:03 THE CAT DID A PEEKABOO !! AWW !!!
Holy fucking shit that sounds like a guitar
Who else doesn't play piano but just watches?
Haha I wonder how many likes you'll get!
By the way, how did you stumble across this video if you don't play?
I watch a lot of songs on piano and it suggested it haha
ah cool I just started learning guitar, so hard T^T
I wish I could play but my hands are too small, hahaha
haha don't worry you'll keep growing
Nice sound but I noticed it's the cat who controls the pedals the whole time while you only need to focus on the keys. You fooled us but nice team work though:)
Aha, I fooled you even further! I have three cats! One for soft sustain, one for sustenuto and one for the damper pedal!
Wow, that's sophisticated! I only noticed one cat musician. The other two hid very well
@@metalshinobi2900 r u crius?
thank you so much for explaining it so simply
I’ve been looking for this for almost a year now. Thank you so much!
Another excellent concept tutorial!!
You're the best!! More please!!
I like how Music Instruments connect each other... they have same theory but different style.. I play fingerstyle guitar.. 8 months still on progress;)
This is a great tip to share with as I was thinking about this how to play piano like strumming a guitar. Knowing this will be helpful for song arrangement using DAW. Thank you so much.
The effect is quite beautiful.
I've always dreamed of being able to play like that. It's going to take practice. Thanks for the tutorial. Love the sound!!
So so helpful. Thank you very much. I'm a guitarist trying to understand the piano. Excellent tutorial👍
really love this video and beautiful voicing and patterns you use on it
Thanks, great video. You explain things well. You're right, that is how we guitar players strum.
really helpful thank you
I just realized that changing the voicing of the different notes of the chord in opposite directions, was a very clever thing to do as it made the strumming pattern clearer.
Excellent! And I know that I am going to find this very useful! Thank you!
This video just gave me useful ideas to incorporate into my playing! Thank you so much :)
This was very interesting! Thanks!
loved the lesson. thank you
Thanks a lot. This is really helpful. I'm trying to learn songs by hearing them and I look forward to playing the guitar parts better as well with the piano.
Sounds tight man..i dig your lessons🎹..Thanks😸
I also used guitar to learn piano by playing the arpegios of each chord on the piano.. It helped me a lot.
this is how i play piano always and I don't even play guitar
Peace Ninja but now you know how a guitar player like me plays the piano from the beginning :) (basic piano skill not included ;D)
Ditto. Me to.
I have try playng piano but i dont know what chord is To paly g or D im guitar player so guitar is easier
the snake gaming scout - Wow it’s been 3 years since I’ve posted this and UA-cam barely notifies me
@the snake fading scout - I personally feel like piano is easier. It’s just one giant A string (if you’re playing a full size piano)
that sounds like great accompaniment music thanks man
enjoyed the clap to edit out that piece n u left it in. make me glad everyone makes mistakes. great rhythm pattern
Sounds beatiful!!!!
I hate when my 3 cats come in my studio to say hi, damn things cry until I quit playing and pay them attention. None the less, funny I have been playing keyboards 30 years and still come to videos like this. You can ALWAYS learn something! I also play guitar and bass and struggle at times to transpose my work on the keyboard because the voicings are odd on guitar at times.
Thanks for helping others learn...
I've been trying to find a video like this for a while, glad I finally found it. Great video!
Glad you liked it!
Theofillos Isidore I really like this kind of playing. I have been finding. Now I get. Post like this more and more. Very useful
This was helpful thank you
Thanks a lot, you're doing a beautiful job !
Great Lesson, thank you very Much!!
You're very welcome!
Beautiful lesson. I am day 4 with the piano and this makes it easy to get nice sounds out quickly. My experience with guitar (for theory and rhythm) and with drums helps out immensely.
Great channel. Thanks a lot!
Good lesson! Lee
Thanks for this video. Can you please make some more "piano strumming patterns" videos using different tempos and genres?
Thank you for this short lesson😊..it can help me to play keyboard in our church😊..Godbless
i am a gtr player and love Kieth Jarret
you are bang on!
this is beautiful
Thank you - best wishes from the UK & a guitar-vocalist turned keyboard-vocalist.
Your vids help me understand piano very well.
Thank you! 👍👽🎸🎹🎶🎧🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Fantastic! I had figured this out myself in getting Nathaniel Rateliff's SOB from guitar to piano. Then I realized someone else must have this notion of getting guitar to piano, and sure enough, this video nails it. I had figured out for myself: 1) Chord both hands, 2) Alternate hands a lot, 3) Vary that alteration, 4) Pedal like crazy, 5) Highly variable dynamics with frequent emphasis where the lyrics also get emphasis. It works great.
Yep, this is something a lot of players pick up just by trying to play guitar-oriented songs with a piano.
Great lesson. I find it challenging yet doable with work. I’ve been playing cowboy chords on the guitar for many years and decided to take up the piano in my old age. Keep up the good work.
Thanks John. You too! Keep on practicing :)
Very Good, Thanks.. for all you videos, you are amazing
Thanks Sistemas.
Just found your channel today. I'm trying to teach myself the piano and will be using your guides. Thanks much for your work!
You're welcome and good luck!
great video....gave me ideas... I am already a guitar player who is transitioning into becoming a piano player....you have opened my eyes to applying to the piano what I know from the guitar. Your videos always cover stuff that nobody else does. Thank you
Great, glad to hear you're picking up useful bits!
Thanks for all your videos Assaf! You re truly a loving guy :) Greetings from India
Thank you Abraham for watching and dropping by to say hello in the comments section :)
I play the Piano like a sax player... I just use one staff lol.
Very Good!
Really useful! I feel like I get stuck in the same few rhythms a lot. This was difficult at first because I often play the opposite of this rhythm (pattern of R and L hand are basically reversed)
Very helpful, thanks for sharing that :)
Sir u have a great teacher 👍
Ur style to good
This arrangement of power chords would fit perfectly into an 80s rock ballad anthem.
Thank you so much!
I always thought piano was hard because I couldn't move my left hand but since it's in the same spot until you change chords, this makes it look so easy! Piano isn't as hard as I thought it was! Thanks for the tip! (I used to play piano for a few years, then stopped. Now I play guitar).
Boekster Cubing It gets harder
Not really if you pace yourself.
xero spacious If you play classical music it does. just practice 6 hours a day and it'll be fine lol
Jake Jenkins Aye pacing :P
Boekster Cubing a cuber here???? HOWWW?????
Eeeek! I'm so excited. You're my hero. I can play up to Gr6 on piano but no one took the time to show me how to play it like a guitar. (I'm a self taught guitarist). Thank you for this video. I've subscribed to your channel to learn more about how to play my piano free-style.
Thanks! The channel focuses a lot on "practical theory", which means how to make your piano playing "sound good", in the context of jazz/pop/fusion/etc - a lot of harmony, chord voicing, etc. Hope you find something helpful.
very helpfull indeed.nthanks for your lessons sir. 😊
You're welcome Simon.
Love this!
I found a disparity between what my rhythm sounded like, playing at slower speed, and what the instructor's rhythm sounded like playing this at full speed. I realised I really had to up the tempo to get it close to the tempo he's playing it at, before what I was playing, was really starting to sound like what he was playing. So what is the tempo?
When he plays it once through "up to tempo" - (the section just before he claps) - its approximately 225 bpm (eighth notes).
Grab a metronome and practice at increasing tempos, until you get to that speed; once there, I found the rhythm, particularly of the right hand, starts to shine through :-)
Being a guitar player, there is definitely a similarity in how I play, especially in arpeggios, and inversions.
I like that!
I learned guitar and piano about the same time, and this is how I play. I never noticed I was playing different than normal.
There's no "normal" really. This way of playing has become more popular I think in recent years.
But Does it Djent?
BreadnButterJohnski actually piano version of djent is more badass than guitar djent
I can confirm as someone who couldn't do very complex patterns on my left hand that this is what I played like for years in a worship band
Thanx sir....Love from India ❤❤
This is awesome
Thank you :)
Wow, this video definitely not changed my mind course i only play guitar!!!
Thank you!
You're welcome, Rachel!
This could make for one part of a great duet piece.
you are a Real Master, love your chanel
cheers from Guatemala
Thank you Jose. But who is Jerry?
MangoldProject
Sorry,
Tom is your cat and jerry the mouse, when you are not at home they play the piano 😂
my cats have eaten all the mice!
As "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter was the first song that inspired me to play the piano, I do this pretty often
Thank you for answering.
Thanks for answering my answer :)
thank you sir
I found this video while searching for answers to the beginning of Elton John's "Sad Songs Say So Much." It sounds to me like a strumming sound, and if I remember correctly, the instrument he used was either an "electric piano" or an "electronic piano" I adore the sound at the beginning of that song, and I really want to know if it's the instrument he's playing, or his technique, or a combination of both. I could swear you're even using the same chords that he does, in the song.
The title "Thinking like a guitar player"
Me - a guitar player
*Strumms random positions i know sound good having no idea about most chords*
This have nothing to do with guitar playing (I am a guitarist myself), but it still sounds freaking aweasome, nice tip.
You're welcome, Victor.
Victor Sabiá Pereira Carpes I play both and I think it does, this sounds similar as when you just strum top or bottom strings and not all of them
Oh, I see.
I guess it does make some sense after all
thank youuuuuuuuuuuu so much
Wow!
That's it. I found something inspire to learn keyboard now. Thank you. P.S. I'm a guitar player.
WOW!!! wonderful
Thanks Amine. By the way, you might already know this, but your name (Amine) has a meaning in chemistry :)
hehe thanks
do you mean Amino acid (protein and stuff).
Nope, I meant what's called amine groups, like the ones the appear in ammonia.
ohhh
You both are correct, technically. An amino acid gets it's name from the amine group (NH2) being attached to a carboxylic acid (COOH) with a bit extra. Ammonia is simply NH3, which is just an amine group with a third hydrogen. Yay for science and music!
(Note: This is my best understanding of the situation; I'm not the greatest at chemistry.)
Great! thank you :-)
