The coyotes moved in and there went my deer, wild turkey, and small game. So I got in touch with Sportsman's Guide where I have been ordering things for years, and purchased a Savage 93 17HMR, scope and a laser bore site and several boxes of ammo. Keeping it short, this may be called a "Plinking" round but a Coyote at 200 yards is dead if you can use a firearm at all. Now my deer, turkey, and small game are back. Could you guys throw together a 10-20 minute talk with Ryan about the 6.5x55(swede)? I am contemplating building a chassis rifle in 6.5, and up here in Norway the 6.5 swede is found everywhere. I also have access to several thousands of once fired quality brass. Could you compare this to the Creedmoor for long range shootin? Is the added expense in my country by going Creedmoor worth it?
If you plan on hunting there is no real difference in the two but for long range the longer higher BC bullets of the Creedmoor will out shine the Swede I think 5 or 6 hundred and in not going to be much different but if u plan on going to 1000 I'd say go Creedmoor
@@Truhaa91 I own both. They are super similar. You can't go wrong with either. If it were me. The rifle I want would make the decision for me if you are purchasing an off the shelf gun.
The brand that isn't mentioned is Browning who offers a 25 grain load , and though I still hear that all .17WSM is actually manufactured by Winchester , I have seen one youtuber shoot this into a half inch group at 110 yds from a stainless , heavy barreled Savage B-mag with the new factory synthetic stock ! I have recently purchased this same rifle which I hear now has the slightly improved , stiffer stock though it still just barely touches the barrel on the left tip of the forend . My first effort to correct this will be to use one drop of glass bedding at the right rearmost point of cantact to see if I can't pivot the barrel slightly to the right , away from the left side of the forend .
I used my savage bmag stainless bull barrel on 2 prairie dog hunts. Longest shot about 420yd. Used it for all the 200yd and less shots before breaking out the 223s, but also could easily reach to 250 - 270yd. No recoil, slightly louder than 17hmr, but nowhere near the 223! Ammo was $18ish for 50. Laid about 300 dogs to rest on the last trip with that thing! 😊
I killed over 750 prairie dogs with 17wsm in Ruger and Savage B mag . I recently bought 4 cases of Winchester 17 wsm for 11 a box. That a lot better than 223 prices!
@@charlesjoyner6101 where do you hunt and where did you find that ammo! I had settle american eagle ammo. We were in western Montana, but are looking for new places.

This is a fantastic round on groundhogs. Especially potent and accurate is the 15 grain lead-free at more than 3300 FPS; 3400 in my B-mag. I am not a fan of the B-mag bolt action, but the rifle is accurate in a Boyds stock. You have to be very deliberate when running the bolt or it will not cock on close. Why would anyone design an action to cock when closing the bolt instead of when you open the bolt? Anyhow, I will eventually replace the B-mag with a Ruger if they are ever available again. Again, a fantastic rimfire cartridge.
Have one, bought it when it came out. Have the Savage Bmag and ground hogs flop out to 300yds. Very accurate and fun and cheap to shoot. Dust my HMR all day long. However would call it borderline for coyote hunting.
Love this round I have a Bmag with a 6-24 power scope on it I've killed Prarie dogs out to 450 with it and have hit a 6 inch steel plate with it out to 600 yards such a amazing round.
I recently picked up a Savage B-mag 17WSM, heavy barrel/stainless, and I’m in need of a scope recommendation? Anyone in the comments, or, of course the gentlemen discussing the round, would be much appreciated. The purpose of the rifle will be for varmint hunting, at most I have a maximum range of 250 yards here on the farm, and I’d like to keep the cost at 300.00 or less. Any input would be much appreciated!!!
Much like Jim, I wonder sometimes if buying a 17hmr was a bad choice. However considering I can't see ammo anywhere for the WSM and the HMR is "good enough" for most situations, I don't regret it.
Don't feel bad about your 17 hmr man. Within 125 yards the 17 HMR is my favourite cartridge for so many reasons. Availability, gun choices, price, effectiveness, no reason to go to the WSM till you want to shoot further and bigger things. A rad cartridge for sure, but it don't take away anything from the HMR in my opinion. Just wish there were more rifle selections. I do want to get a March 2 some day. If they make more ammo for it.
What do you guys think of the Remington .17 center fire . I love this one the big problem is keeping the barrel lands clean it fouls fast . It doesn't start dropping at 300 hundred yards and if you reload some Hornady there under five thousand feet per sec . But ruger got one I want the 204 thats a lighting bolt . But I love the hmr it retired my 1022 lr .
I hand load for my 17 remington 3900 to 4000 is easy all the Way up to 4300 fps about every 20 to 30 shots it has to be cleaned I also run a 204 ruger ever since they came about 35gr berger bullets it's boring accurate
And the best thing about .17 wsm was before this ammo stupidness I was getting 500 rounds for 86 bucks shipped and a 300 dollar savage Bmag was a ton of fun for cheap !!!!
The .17 wsm is more powerful that you described in your podcast. In one UA-cam the shooter was hitting targets at 500 yards accuratley! Although this is not in the .22-250 range it is a devasting little bullet whether you use the 20 grain v-max or the 25 grain v-max is better on larger predators (coyotes) with the right shot placement.
I have only used a 27cal rimfire nailgun a few times. One jobsite a worker had one that would bumpfire and autoload. You could drive 3" concrete nails at somewhere around 400rpm but it only had 25rd strips of blanks and nails. I watched it run away on a guy that didnt know how bumpfire worked, it was quite a noise.
I have this WSM 17 in a B-Meg with the thumb hole Boyd stock. The problem is The brass. The brass itself is not consistent. If we had that sorted? , The cartridge would be on the top of all rimfire choices
Out of all the wsm I’ve seen you guys talk about the one I’ve seen in person that I’ve never seen anyone talk about again is a .243 wssm and Winchester has some other cool wsm rounds
I grew up in the Aleutian Islands “Birthplace of the Winds”. My general impression with the .17 caliber bullets is they don’t have the mass to keep from drifting in the breeze
Need the .17 HM2 to finish out my trilogy collection. My HMR started out as a Walley World HB 93R17 in the birch stocked model that had eyebrow raising accuracy. Before a box of cartridges went down its bore the barreled action got dropped into a MDT-LSS chassis, the optic mounting system turned into an EGW rail & Burris Tactical rings (overkill but the $ would have gone to beer anyways) holding a BSA Sweet 17 optic. The trigger assembly got a Rifle Basix SAV-R upgrade. Accuracy went from eyebrow raising to jaw-dropping. Total cost... I dont talk about but I LOVE this pew-pew. The .17 "WHIZZUM" (just gave the item its name) is also a Wally World HB SS black synthetic stocked B-MAG. Kept factory stock but filled fore end with ROCKITE to stiffen (and boy did it). Fabbed a recoil lug from a heavy flat washer that rides in the barrels' middle aesthetics cut groove and bedded first 1.5" permanently affixing recoil lug to the stock. Again went with EGW rail (specifically made for B-MAGs), can't remember name of budget HD rings, and the BSA SUPER MAG scope. Using 15 grain LF ammo (3300 fps) hitting pigeons at 100 yards leaves a half dollar size hole in the on-side and no exit on the off-site. The on-side wing usually separates. It's common to see the pigeon lift 4-8" vertically on impact. Yeah, I need a .17 MACH II.
What is on the shelf behind Ryan ? I can’t really pick it out is that random cans of spam ? I would love to hear a talk on one of my favorites and a hard caliber to find brass for and that the Remington SAUM preferably the 7 but I wouldn’t pass up listing to one on the 300 SAUM
I would really like to know where you find the 25 gr ammo for this gun. I have 1, 000+rds of the 20 gr and have never found a box of 25 gr. I'm on a list but for the 25, but this is over a year out.
I have an hmr and a 2wsm rifles and love the wsm...it's way more powerful but not quite as accurate but I have seen alot of coyotes run away after being shot with a hmr but not with a wsm
My 17 hmr has honestly impressed me, hit a crow at 182 yards and blew it's back out.. at that range the little .17 gr v max was probably only doing 1350fps but had the energy to still expand and do damage. I'd call the 17hmr a 150 yard gun.
17 hmr . extremely fun to shoot. Whacks the heck out of any steel 22lr rated targets and has no problems at 100. Sorry i ever sold my stainless, laminated stock savage in that caliber. May have to look at the 17wsm.
Do you have the 22 inch heavy barrel? I’m hoping to get that kind of accuracy out of whatever rifle I pick up, but some of the older stories say the bmag isn’t accurate. I’m guessing they fixed that by now.
@@dkel4341 thumb hole stock, heavy barrel. amazing how flat it shoots, for such a small round. winchesters shot best out of mine, of 6 different brands i tried. really like thumb hole stock.
@@lilfairycupcake right on, thanks man. I believe that’s the “target” model. That’s good news because I just scooped up 700 rounds of Winchester 20gr. Wanted to get the ammo while it was in stock while I decided on a rifle. By the way if you’ve been looking for it, check ammo seek. Win must have sent out a bunch of shipments because they’ve been posting all day for .36-.46 cpr, but each vendor sells out quick when they get posted
Why did Winchester develop round and never chamber any production rifles in it? It is superior to the HMR but the Savage B-Mag with the plastic stock strange action/bolt seems to be the only gun available at the time.
Why are you not able to find ammo for this anywhere on Gods green earth. I have the Savage V mag. The gun dealer had one box of ammo American Eagle ammunition that I purchased and I have been unable to find ammo since.
There’s not enough time and space here to list how many times this pea shooter has performed beyond expectation for me even out of the only Savage I’ve ever, or will ever for that matter, owned. Shooting paper for a consistent group is not where it impresses me but that little bullet finds hair and it is ruthless for a long ways out.
I find the .17 cal bullets fragment too fast for coyotes. I'd think this would be a great cartridge for prairie dogs but I'm waiting for a .22 WSM to come out and I'll buy that just because it shoots bullets that hold together and mushroom like a big game bullet. Much more versatile imo.
I've been shooting a Volquartsen 17 WSM, super accurate and kills the heck out of pigs. I'm exclusively head shooting. I have notices poor quality, failure to fire quite often. With that said, it's so accurate and such a pleasure to shoot I would never get rid of it.
2 years later, one thing that always makes or breaks a new cartridge is ammo availability. Ammo seek shows you exactly how 'popular' 17 WSM is. Which is a shame, I was really hoping it'd be worth investing in.
I bought a new Ruger m77 in 17 hornet . I love the way it shoots but shells are $60 for 50 rounds and I bought Winchester 17 wsm for 11 a box. That is a big difference
I think a great pivot from here would be go straight to .408 or .375 CheyTac, who's with me? Although we might blow our transmission shifting gears like that.
Would anybody be offended if you guys mentioned the model scope you guys offer that best works the cartridge you are talking about? Or is the point, we need to ask? I have mine set up with a Crossfire II 4-12 x 40 bdc (I have this scope on a .22 LR as well) and I am wondering what else in your line up would be applicable?
Scopes are budget and application dependent. About the only reason that a scope would not be fit for an application is when it has a BDC reticle designed for a different cartridge. The general consumer will not put the effort into “truing” the reticle for the cartridge, which should be done anyway when using a BDC reticle. Basically, just buy the best glass within budget restrictions and decide if you want your turrets exposed, capped, locking, etc.
The main reason is none of our scopes are caliber specific. The Crossfire II 4-12x40 with the Dead-Hold BDC reticle for example can be put on a wide variety of platforms and calibers. It simply comes down to running your ballistics and relating that information to the reticle or turrets for adjustments.
Can anyone tell me what 17 was used as a kangaroo rifle? My dad used to have a 17 he used to shoot bobcat and fox to sell to fur buyers. Didn’t leave a big exit hole in fur

Different bullets you say? I am planning on reloading for it. So are you talking about factory ammo selection of bullets?
@@Truhaa91 I own both. They are super similar. You can't go wrong with either. If it were me. The rifle I want would make the decision for me if you are purchasing an off the shelf gun.
I have the 17 WSM Volquartsen semi auto. Can put rounds in the size of a quarter at 175 yards which is my zero range. Super round and gun
I’m impress with the 17WSM, now I’m guessing about a 22WSM , what do you think about it? All the best
Heyyyy
Would still like to hear about the 204 ruger!
Pretty sure they already talked about it
$1.35 or so a shot, if you can find it.
The .204 is really an incredible round! I would also love to hear a talk on it.
@@joshuamagill4342 I concur. Superior to .223 and .22-250. I shoot all three and favor the .204.
I use the 17 hmr a lot on seals and sea otters it works great not to much energy where it nocks the air out the animal and sink
Lol.... What
Could we get one on the 9.3x62?
This looks like it would be great in .224, basically a 22 short mag. Would it out perform the 22 Wmr???
I have hunted mostly in northeastern Colorado but also shot alot of Richardson's ground squirrels in Northwest Montana. I bought several cases of Winchester 17 wsm
At Whitaker's Guns in West Louisville Kentucky is where I bought my best buy on Winchester 17 wsm in 25 grain for$110 a case
Should be 25 WSM! Winchester needs to make this happen! 25 rimfire is needed.
Heard that Winchester tried this with the centerfire WSMs years ago but couldn't make it work. Too overbore perhaps.
Takes a couple or 3 sometimes.. but lots of 1 pull thumps..
Love this round I have a Bmag with a 6-24 power scope on it I've killed Prarie dogs out to 450 with it and have hit a 6 inch steel plate with it out to 600 yards such a amazing round.
first video i seen of your guys' and i REALLY made up my mind with this 17wsm...new sub great content
.17 Remington my favorite rifle. Beautiful rifle too
Got one love it it's a 1972 model 700 bdl
Love these informative talks. Please, please, please cover the good old 6.5x55 Swede.
I would like to see the introduction of a 20 WSM.
5mm rem needs to be reintroduced.
Where I live I'm borderd by tons of public land where you can't hunt with centerfires. So my 17 wsm is my go to coyote gun around my house.
Can you talk about the br? 22br 6mm br
We're can I find the 17wsm amo I need some 20 or 25 grain it's hard to find
I recently picked up a Savage B-mag 17WSM, heavy barrel/stainless, and I’m in need of a scope recommendation? Anyone in the comments, or, of course the gentlemen discussing the round, would be much appreciated. The purpose of the rifle will be for varmint hunting, at most I have a maximum range of 250 yards here on the farm, and I’d like to keep the cost at 300.00 or less. Any input would be much appreciated!!!
Personally I like the Burris 3x9 nice scope.
Much like Jim, I wonder sometimes if buying a 17hmr was a bad choice. However considering I can't see ammo anywhere for the WSM and the HMR is "good enough" for most situations, I don't regret it.
do one for the 5mm remington rimfire magnum
Don't feel bad about your 17 hmr man. Within 125 yards the 17 HMR is my favourite cartridge for so many reasons. Availability, gun choices, price, effectiveness, no reason to go to the WSM till you want to shoot further and bigger things. A rad cartridge for sure, but it don't take away anything from the HMR in my opinion. Just wish there were more rifle selections. I do want to get a March 2 some day. If they make more ammo for it.
What other rifle manufacturers are planning new rifles in 17 WSM
I love the 17WSM, but hated the bmag. I’d love to see the Ruger American chambered in 17WSM. Also, I’d like to see an episode on the 204 Ruger
I wish MDT would make an aluminum chassis for the B-mag !
Make a 22 win super mag
Can you do a 10 min talk on 300 Blackout? viability for deer hunting, coyotes, hog, deer?
We'll add it to the list. Thanks, Adrian!
I can’t find any ammo for 17wsm, got any suggestions
I grew up in the Aleutian Islands “Birthplace of the Winds”.
My general impression with the .17 caliber bullets is they don’t have the mass to keep from drifting in the breeze
Im fishing in the Aleutians this summer, and you arent wrong. The wind is crazy out here
Need the .17 HM2 to finish out my trilogy collection.
I haveca bunchbof every caliber... look pawn shops and smaller stores.
204 Ruger vs 223 Remington/or 222 remington would be an interesting one.
I fully second the .222 Remington!
I third the 222 remington
Please do a piece on the new Savage A17WSM. I understand that there are two models. Thanks
I’d like to hear about the 7mm rem mag just picked a rifle chambered in it I enjoy watching your videos very informing.
I have an hmr and a 2wsm rifles and love the wsm...it's way more powerful but not quite as accurate but I have seen alot of coyotes run away after being shot with a hmr but not with a wsm
What the difference between 17 hornet vs 17 wsm?
Is this round just to have a 200yard rimfire? Wouldn't 5.7x28 be a viable centerfire with similar ballistics that is commercially available?
My 17 hmr has honestly impressed me, hit a crow at 182 yards and blew it's back out.. at that range the little .17 gr v max was probably only doing 1350fps but had the energy to still expand and do damage. I'd call the 17hmr a 150 yard gun.
17 hmr . extremely fun to shoot. Whacks the heck out of any steel 22lr rated targets and has no problems at 100. Sorry i ever sold my stainless, laminated stock savage in that caliber. May have to look at the 17wsm.
It's rapidly rapid..
Question, is the 30-378 Weatherby Magnum the fastest, most flat shooting 30 caliber, and if not which 30 caliber is?
Interesting little cartridge. Would love to hear you guys talk about the .357 magnum!!
YES, and the .44
Noted! Thanks, Adam! :)
very potent lil round. shoots flat, can do 1/4" group at 100, 17gr., out of my savage wsm bmag.
Can you do a review on the 8.5x63 Reb?
You guys also forgot about the .204-50 BMG
Why did Winchester develop round and never chamber any production rifles in it? It is superior to the HMR but the Savage B-Mag with the plastic stock strange action/bolt seems to be the only gun available at the time.
Why are you not able to find ammo for this anywhere on Gods green earth. I have the Savage V mag. The gun dealer had one box of ammo American Eagle ammunition that I purchased and I have been unable to find ammo since.
How good a round is this for Jackrabbit?
We need a 408 cheytac video! Would love to hear y'all's take on that round .
We'll add it to the idea bucket!
LOVIN' Savage with a B-MAG on a Boyds spike camp stock.... I'm digging it baby !!!
What is the likelihood of a 20 WSM and 22 WSM in the future?
Would be awesome to see a 7MM STW 10 minute talk
We'll certainly add it to the list!
There’s not enough time and space here to list how many times this pea shooter has performed beyond expectation for me even out of the only Savage I’ve ever, or will ever for that matter, owned. Shooting paper for a consistent group is not where it impresses me but that little bullet finds hair and it is ruthless for a long ways out.
why cant we find ammo for the 17win super mag went and bought one love it but cant find ammo grrrrrrrr
What about the 17 remington
They would probably have to look it up there to young for that round . I love mine
@@waynemayle865 same been reloading for awhile aint nothing like that rocket
@@MrJtin69 👍
Last time I was this early, Gene Cernan still hadn’t landed on the moon.
Me too
I've been shooting a Volquartsen 17 WSM, super accurate and kills the heck out of pigs. I'm exclusively head shooting. I have notices poor quality, failure to fire quite often. With that said, it's so accurate and such a pleasure to shoot I would never get rid of it.
I love 22 Magnums but am interested in the 17 HMR mean looking Spitzer looking round I'm going to buy 1 absolutely
I hunt in counties in va that don't allow hunting with centerfire rifles, that's were the 17 wsm shines in my opinion.
2 years later, one thing that always makes or breaks a new cartridge is ammo availability.
Ammo seek shows you exactly how 'popular' 17 WSM is. Which is a shame, I was really hoping it'd be worth investing in.
Just don't see much benefit of the 17 WSM over the 17 Hornet. Might be a little cheaper ammo, but you can reload the Hornet.
I bought a new Ruger m77 in 17 hornet . I love the way it shoots but shells are $60 for 50 rounds and I bought Winchester 17 wsm for 11 a box. That is a big difference
While the Ruger M77 .17 wsm is a Cadillac of a rifle, but the Savage B-Mag is the Ford Focus equivalent.
Have the franklin f17 . A little over 3100fps with the non lead 15grn bullet
I think you guys need to do an ELR Or ULR Cartridges just an idea
Can anyone tell me what 17 was used as a kangaroo rifle? My dad used to have a 17 he used to shoot bobcat and fox to sell to fur buyers. Didn’t leave a big exit hole in fur
17 Remington maybe.
What about .22WMR ??
how long until its obsolete
I'm pretty sure Taofledermaus launched bb's with nailgun blanks at about 5000 fps.
