Jack was truly incredible. Pneumonia cut his life short at 96. 1033 pushups in 23 minutes is 45 per minute average. Plus he did (just going from memory) something like 1000 Jumping Jacks in the same hour of LIVE TV.

Thanks for posting this, Jack's dad died young, he called it 'suicide'. Jack made it to 95 and helped so many succeed at feeling better mentally. He loved helping people feel better! Groucho seemed to enjoy blowing the cigar smoke Jack's way. Groucho was always so fresh, the aspiring actress and Jack seeking to draw more fans to his morning show. 1 1/2 hours he was given 5 days a week! His shows were very popular, even to those still on the couch with the remote. Love my Jack La Lanne Juicer!

Thank you for that corraborative anecdote. I've never smoked, but had a neighbor a year younger than me who from her teens smoked heavily. Last year she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer that metastasized and so required brain surgery.
This Groucho show was (I presume) from before the 1961 US Surgeon General official report that smoking does cause cancer, and that first required labeling on cigarette packages that smoking is a health hazard. Soon after, tobacco ads were banned on tv.

Groucho died 2 months short of his 87th birthday, and in his elderly years, suffered dementia, a heart attack, congestive heart failure, a broken hip from falling- twice!, a urinary track infection, hypertension, and a stroke. Lalanne at 96 felt well enough to do his long exercise routine only 24 hours before he died.

@@2Tall_Powerlifting Also like 10 years is nothing. lol 10 years being free and healthy is something no one wants to give up. Groucho also suffered pain and discomfort in later years due to illnesses. So, it is a lot more than just 10 years. It is many more years being healthy. I am not writing to be mean. I wish everybody could eat healthy, cheat if you want once a week, not incredibly bad. lol And exercise regularly. Almost everyone would be happier, in general. Much happier. Looking and feeling really good.

Good night, he enjoyed it, don't know why others are getting bent out of shape and...by the way, Groucho lived to be 86 years old himself...That's quite an achievement in itself..and especially seeing how the guy was born in 1890

Klutzyknockoutlady, my uncle died at 60 after 15 years of smoking cigars: ever see someone with throat cancer? Months before he died, he had a pouch on the side of his throat and his voice was a raspy whisper. Ditto Sue Randall, much younger, the actress who played Beav's teacher on Leave It To Beaver, ex- happy smoker on Newport tv ads. My sister's boyfriend having smoked since his teens, died of lung cancer at 48 (looked and acted in his 90's; pathetic, and I mean that with pity).

Some people (like George Burns) seem naturally hardy and genetically enabled for longevity. In his case, he may have just used the cigar (like Groucho in Groucho's early films, but not on this show) as a theatrical prop, before the cameras. He may not have inhaled. Too, George Burns was a calm, steady pragmatic thinker with a philosophical sense of humor about life who created and controlled his career and realities. Gracie unfortunately was not so hardy. His emotional resilience got him to 101.

I have always been a fan of Groucho & The Marx Brothers, in their films that mostly satirized overinflated pretense. But in the 1940s through 1950s and again in 1970s (through today), a few brave lone pioneers like Jack LaLanne started in America and Europe a mass movement to eat and exercise for best possible health ... and such pioneers were rudely and roundly ridiculed as "health nuts"--as here, Jack extendedly by Groucho ... whose cigar smoking shortened his own life and his emulators'.

Jack had the last laugh--he lived to 96, healthy and happy.Groucho as a career satirist comedian never learned a central philosophical fact about satire: truth and true goodness (especially nobility and heroism, such as Jack LaLanne's) are unsatirizable. From antiquity the aim of satire is to deflate and dethrone falsehood, folly, vice and evil, and to restore truth, wisdom, virtue and high hopes, aims and achievements.A satirist is always inferior to a true, good, noble person and lofty artist.
