You Bet Your Life #59-32 The funniest Baptist preacher Groucho ever hoid ('Book', Apr 28, 1960)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 жов 2014
- NOTE: The first couple of minutes of the episode are cut off.
There's a surprise appearance by someone Groucho wasn't expecting or he probably wouldn't have said some of the things he did. . .
And I still miss the duck.
COUPLE #1: Lena Marciano, mother of Rocky Marciano / Dr. James Brougher, 90 year old Baptist minister who gets off quite a few very funny jokes. A solider from the audience replaces Dr. Brougher in the quiz.

For those wondering, Dr. Brougher passed away in 1967, aged 97. His father was born in 1826, but passed away at a relatively young age of 68. Dr. Brougher had four children, all lived to be at least 77. The youngest two lived to be 96 (Corinna, d.1994) and 101 (James Jr., d.2003).
Thanks for the information. Amazing genes!
He gave a fantastic comedic performance. What a great show. Watch out Groucho! Even Groucho couldn't keep a straight face or move his eyebrows up and down.
My Dad is 97. I will tell him to watch these re-runs ASAP.
Did you hear the one about the centenerian who made it to heaven and upon entering the celestial city stood there in awe and utter amazement at the wonder and the beauty of it all. St. Peter approached him and says, "Pretty impressive isn't it? "I'll say!" says the old man. "And to think that I could have been here 20 years earlier if my wife hadn't put me on that organic food diet."
JAHBLESS.
Groucho is the greatest comedian ever...but Dr. Brougher is amazing, 90 years old, intelligent, witty and classy..... and sharper than 99% of people of all ages. And when you can steal the show from Groucho ! What a show, the only undefeated Heavyweight champion, his mama, Dr. Brougher and Groucho......best tv episode ever !!!!!!
Very nice statement!
I know you've most likely seen the one with Phillis Diller?
I have noticed that Groucho was kind toward his guests - never attempted to belittle them, or tell jokes at their expense. class.
very kind Bless Groucho
That's hilarious!
Grouch hides from Rocky!
Groucho never cruel but always witty.
Except asking the lady how much she weighs.
@@sa-oz8gu exactly!!!!! and joke about name "Leena" ...leaner? 2 fat jokes
The old fella was hysterical, isn’t it magic that we can see and listen to someone who was born in the 1800s?!?
If you check out the "I've got a secret" channel, you can see a guy who was an eyewitness to the Lincoln assassination. That amazed me when I first saw it.
Jim Steele I know! I saw that... I was shocked when I first saw that.
Mary Corder I find that so fascinating. I’m obsessed with talking to people who experienced and know people who experienced decades that I wasn’t around for yet. My dad was born in 1950 and my mom in 1955. What state are you from?
Here's another fun one... John Tyler, 10th president of the US has two grandchildren alive today. (2017). Not bad for someone born in 1790! Both Tyler and one of his sons remarried very late in life to a woman much younger.
Jim Steele Oh, I know!!! That blew my mind when I first heard that!
This is like watching Johnny Carson. If you can make Groucho laugh, you've peaked in life.
Carson used writers Groucho just add libbed absolute genious
Love how Groucho knows to take a back seat ! Today’s interviewers would never let anyone take the spotlight of them
Thanks bro
The guy is 90 yrs. Old & talks better than bidens & Bernie
That was real, D those days no cursing swearing or anything sexual
Remember, in the movies Groucho was basically the "straight man" for Chico and Harpo, but he was still funny. He was a master at that role.
Same with Don Rickles
A man born during the U.S. Grant administration on television. Even Groucho aside, this is a genuine gem of modern history.
Vic McLaglen There is a video of the last living witness to the Lincoln assassination on one of these old shows. The clip is on UA-cam.
@@voidofbeeswax The show was "I've Got A Secret" with guest Samuel Seymour. It aired 4 years before this episode. ua-cam.com/video/1RPoymt3Jx4/v-deo.html
Amen. Just DL'd it. And sharp as a tack as well!
VideoNOLA wasn’t the show called you bet your life..
Born the year after Frank Lloyd Wright’s birth.
90 years old, and this man still had his fastball.
He was pretty sharp and looked much younger!
You can STILL buy Mr. Brougher's book! Amazing! What a great show this was. :)
I have his book. A keepsake.
Me too !! And I actually got an autographed copy… a treasured copy
Dr. Brougher passed seven years after this aired in 1967. He was 97. His son, James Jr. was 101 when he passed. Good living and good genes.
LOL who cares
@@samdowner1792 Read about him. You'll learn something.
@@heru-deshet359 Nah, he is just another religious shyster.

Groucho definitely was quite amused by this guy's jokes. Great stuff. I was nine years old when this aired. It is nice UA-cam has the good old TV shows when TV was really good. Thanks for these clips.
"I'm so homely she would rather go with me than to kiss me goodbye" LOL
*101 Votes, but Zero Comments!!!*
yes
During this totalitarian lock down, I absolutely love all this old comedy, thank you Groucho!!!
I remember seeing this episode when I was about 11 years old (1960?) If this old minister were my grandfather I would be so proud of the way he held his own with Groucho for 20 minutes. the joke he starts at 9:00 is told with the classic style of an old pro. Thanks to Groucho for letting him take the show for a few moments. As funny as Groucho is, he's always a class act.
classic jokes never go out of style
@@frankcianciotta1362 No they just get tired.
@@michaelsalisbury1477 Yeah, especially to those who only have the mental capacity to understand "humor" that involves vulgarity, toilets or jokes about body parts every other word.
I love that when Missus (Rocky's mum) Marciago walks in she literally has the stance of a prize fighter.
Rocky Marciano looked just like his mother!
I have a picture of my grandfather, The Judge, or Hanging Herc', and Rocky Marciano, along with several other guys with too many vowels in their last names .
Even w
And the weight of the highest division at that time. Now we have the super-heavyweight class, which make Marciano appear as a lightweight in comparison as he and most of his contemporarys tipped the scales at under 200 pounds.
"Are you a gay Bachelor, or are you in the Trap?"
The entire question takes on totally different connotations in 2021 LOL
@Sonny Atlas what do you like about it? Be specific
Although at 4:21 he does mention that he goes to "mens' clubs
@@mikepen918 Yeah, before feminism, Men and women realized that they were different and had groups and clubs that were gender specific. They used to realize that men and woman naturally compliment each other before changing it to and "Us vs. Them " attitude. feminism is a cancer.
@@Valkonnen Well said and absolutely true!
The preacher’s jokes sound surprisingly fresh and original ( to me at least...and im 63) and VERY funny
Yes, I'm sure they would stand the test of time, that is, if the millennials dont kill them.
The preacher is funny without any foul language, he can keep up with Groucho.
maydom04 Happens. Thanks. Bye
Is his book published? Life and Laughter by Rev Boughers?
They called it "crack brain" humor back then.
1960 to 2019 and STILL had me laughing my head off! :):) You can't beat good ole wholesome comedy!
This is real humor. Not the vicious and hateful political attacks by the so called comedians today. Groucho could insult you and make you love it.
Wahhhhhh.
There's always one in the crowd. Today it's you.
It's TV in the 50's what the fuck do you want?
Well those modern comedians are not only hysterical but quite therapeutic!
@@ritchiestirling6801 More than one.
@@jesushatesyoutoo You're not funny or interesting.
That old man was hilarious and had a BIG heart 💚
Funny they were talking about sensitivity way back then.
*YES!!! I was SHOCKED by that!!!!*
Very different world back then. People were more sensitive to the values and mores at the time. Respect and honor were actually practiced by the population!
I sure wasn't shocked by that personally. I've seen a quote that language changes so fast it's unbelievable and that new words pop up everywhere (the quote was dated 1911) :)
I feel Groucho had great respect for Dr Brougher, (What a charming character) and he looked seriously shocked when Rocky appeared! His 'personal' interest impressed me - spending the entire show chatting to two people.
This was a sweet episode. It was extremely nice of the preacher to let a military person take his place to win some money.
Yes, a very nice gesture. It's very difficult to find someone like the preacher now. Also, Its all about greediness now too.
as sweet a gesture as it was, I believe there are rules about winning money as a member of the clergy. He would've no doubt donated it to one charity or another. The nod to the military as embodied by this young man was indeed a nice way of making it more personal. :)
EDIT: And good television. This guy was nothing if not a good showman.
@cautionTosser
As the daughter of a Babtist minister l assure there was no rule that would prevent him from taking the winnings from TV quit show. He would however give to the church his tithe (10 % of the winnings.)
Awesome clip. Groucho was Years ahead of his time. Such a brilliant, quick mind.
You rarely saw Groucho chuckle/laugh, so if you did, something very humorous was said. The perfume/liniment comment was one that Groucho really liked, very funny...
"I'd rather smell her perfume than liniment" - OMG that guy was hilarious! Groucho seemed to appreciate him.
I've never seen Groucho laugh at anyone else's jokes.
Greg Dolecki Mild chuckle here. There's a video somehwere on here where the contestant is a black woman maybe 30 or 40 years of age, who tells him a joke making him literally and audibly laugh out loud. It's surreal and wonderful. I've been trying to relocate the video.
And Groucho's come back "unless I had arthritis."
Genius!
@@gregdolecki8530 ...be sure to watch YOU BET YOUR LIFE's Outtakes, shown here on UA-cam. Between time slots 6:45 and 8:30 you can see the miracle of Grouch growing from a slow smile into a laugh as the contestant, Ann Brenner, describes how she added yeast cakes to her rolls but 'still couldn't get no rise out of them'...
This is a beautiful piece of television. Found it purely by accident and I'm so glad I did.......
I too stumbled on this video and I cant get enough...I laugh to myself😊😉
I too came across this gem of an insert and I'm simply LOVING it!! Beautiful, gentle, natural and genuinely funny. Groucho is a fantastic interviewer , what a lovely voice .And that cigar-- GORGEOUS .... What an awesome era of innocent STUNNING humour!!
I got here from watching someone's channel who watches Tinyhouse Preppers.
Stephen Guppy me too!! Made me for get Corona for a few minutes
I watched it live with my father circa 1958 to 1963 and in reruns and UA-cam ever since.
"I'd rather smell perfume than linament." - LOL I spit coffee all over the keyboard.
Alan Beumann Happens. Hi. Yes. Bye
Happened to me @ the bow tie 🤣
Hope Groucho used that one in his act after hearing it!
LOL!! You don't see Groucho laughing too often. That preacher got him a couple of times.
Every now and then Grocho meets one who can hold his own, as did the preacher. Very funny. Thanks
What a Great Preacher. Absolute delight.
I so prefer the civility then to the sewer it has become now.
Yup diversity is dividing everyone....
@@FLASHAHOLIC_TV Surely it is money obsession, politics and propaganda, not diversity, that divides - diversity has never yet been accepted, categorization is the sewer, the convenience culture and its sewer civility.
What a beautiful old man. His loving way of handling Groucho is impeccable.
How long did Groucho smoke?
OLD SCHOOL class of 69
Groucho was always with or smoking a cigar.
Just like George Burns
Groucho was a good sport to share the spot light with the preacher ... (Funny )
GraceReneeFlowers the Preacher was a good sport letting Groucho tell a couple of jokes
This Preacher is hilarious!
Dr. James Brougher wrote a very funny book also "Life and Laughter." I think his son was pastor in Glendale, CA for something like 80 years and lived to over 100. And I think his grandson is also still active in ministry. What a great story and family.
I DON'T THINK ANYONE HAS TO WORRY WHERE THIS PREACHER WENT WHEN HE DIED.TRULY A MAN OF GOD,HE WAS
Only God knows
Any evidence of your assertion......at all?
I guess not.
I feel embarrassed that in the 21st century grown-ups still cling to their imaginary friends.
johnnybgoodeish the evidence is the bunch forming in your underwear at the mention of God
@@chrison1604 , yep, just like I said Christians refuse to provide anything like compelling evidence for their god claim and instead indulge in knee-jerk foolishness.
Rather ironic that you accuse me of getting my knickers in a twist :)
Can do better.
@Brian Salomon and still am Brian!
Even when he was dying of cancer and was open about it but not mawkish, he could still destroy his opponents in a debate.
I envy his ability to communicate and take apart fallacious ideas with such panache.
groucho looked really impressed.
This clip made me look for Dr. Broughers book a few years ago, and I was lucky enough to find a copy personally autographed by him. It was something to look at that signature in front of me as I looked at this clip again to see the man who made it. And it's a very good book as well I would recommend to everyone. Joke after joke but in the process he makes many poignant insights about our behavior.
I have an autographed copy of it, too.
Imagine the old preacher getting applause for being in the ministry for so long and getting honored by his denomination.
It's too bad if we have to imagine it. I suppose it still happens if the audience happens to be his congregation.
Imagine in heaven we'll see thet preacher ,what a beautiful place it will be.
People USED to respect ministers and most preachers today have a good sense of humour
I can't believe how I have kept a smile on my face the entire interview.
There were a lot of things interesting in this show. One thing is the respect to our servicemen. There is today, but nothing like back then.
from the begging of time war war war will we ever learn?
@@frankcianciotta1362 From the very beginning of time there have been evil men seeking to make war on the innocent. As long as there are evil men, there will be war as long men continue to resist evil.
This is so funny! The Reverend guy is hilarious!! 😂 I couldn’t stop laughing when he said he’d rather smell perfume than liniment!!! 😂 Can’t get funny like this anymore!
What a treat! My cousin Big Bill Little from Morton, WA was Marciano's sparring partner. They met while in the service at Ft. Lewis , WA Hi Rocky!
Dr. James Brougher lived 7 more years, reaching the age of 97.
ricarleite How did he get from CA to Jennings Co Indiana? I'm from that area.
If I had to guess, he either flew or drove.
ricarleite Oh, silly me!
His son, also a Baptist minister, died in 2003 at the age 101.
As i was alive in 1960, you are absolutely right...he could have also gone by rail.just like today.
I only wish we had more preachers like him today! What a delightful experience it is to listen to him. Groucho was apparently very much amused too. I hope I can somehow lay my hands on his book "Life and Laughter".
i'm just 36 but have enjoyed older programs like this for years. They're far better than modern television.
Agree 1000%
Why did the world change so much.
The world was such a better place. It went to hell once Bill Clinton became President all the way to President Obama and VP Biden
@@matthewlivermanne4441 You know, this was also the era of the Cold War, McCarthyism, racial segregation, the beginnings of the war in Vietnam and the assassinations of the '60s. It's never perfect.
How in God's name can this beautiful moment in comedy history have over 300 dislikes...? It's one of the funniest and touching things I have seen and when was the last time you heard anyone on TV taking about Christ...? Sad but true!
When people applauded for a man who taught Christ! I am thankful this was my childhood then!
Now a days he would be persona non grata or he'd have to lie and say he was from another profession. Living in a world I know longer understand. Thanks for posting!!
Amen!
Amen!
On every street corner there is a temple, at every celebration there is a cleric. The president is sworn in, a cleric is there, a building is inaugurated, a cleric is there, etc. There are hundreds of radio and television stations that broadcast nothing but religion. Religious corporations pay no taxes, religion is taught in schools, and there are about 5,000 different Christian denominations in the U.S. alone. You can hardly get more religion than that.
So your comment can only lead to the conclusion that you would like to see a medieval theocracy without democracy, but with funeral pyres. Right?
@@SevenOfNineteen What makes you conclude that? A theocracy? Why be such a wet blanket.Cool down .Nobody's suggesting anything of the sort? Funeral pyres? Wow. Another hateful atheist who just can't allow anyone to make any pro- religious statements without wild retaliation and absurd retorts. These were better days. Modern society could use more salt and light which is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
"That's the kind of man that makes religion worthwhile." I wish everyone who steps into a church this Easter week will come out saying the same thing.
“Doc, I wanna ask you a question. Have you ever had a transfusion from Milton Berle?” Hilarious!
When you upstage Groucho, you've really got it!
When you can steal the show from Rocky Marciano's mom *and* Groucho Marx... that's something special.
better be packing something in his pockets
...AT 90!!!
*& IF ALIVE now, he would by APPALLED at the TrumpPimps!!!!*
Love how he asked her weight and she gladly answered with 190
I would have said 200 he ll never know the difference
His question references fighter weight categories. The audience made the connection.
Marciano himself fought at about 190 - 195 lbs in his career as I noted above.
He looks really good for 90.
He does, I wouldn't have put him past 70.
My Pawpaw lived to be 97, he didn't look nearly that old, either. He lived on his own til the last few months, grew a garden every year (tomatoes and okra, yum!). I'm hoping I caught some of those genes, lol!
My grandfather lived to almost 98.he looked the same.
@Mr McGoo Lol, how did you know? He was a gospel music songwriter, we have a whole book of all his published works. None of them got very famous, but they all praised God and spread the good news in four part harmony.

Such a fun show! I used to watch this late at night with my now- deceased brother when we were kids. Brought back great memories.
What a funny preacher! Lived to the ripe old age of 97! (1870-1967), and his son (also a preacher) lived to 101! Wow!

I was a musician at the church his son pastored from 2008-2010. Two of his grandchildren still attend the church.
This isn't funny it's crap may he rest burning in hell along with his son
Kelly Norman bitter much
He had the assurance that he would most definitely not “burn in Hell”.
That preacher was genuinely funny! I like that Groucho thinks so too...he's usually hogging the spotlight but he lets him tell his jokes.
A match for Groucho.
How wonderful, this was a real treat, for anyone to get one on the Great Groucho is rare but he was just amazing. Rockies Mum was very good too
what a funny guy the preacher
"That's the kind of man that would make religion worthwhile!" Love it... and I confess, I'm a Catholic.
Love these old recordings! I was a little kid, but I grew up listening to these shows, and I loved them! Now I’m an old lady, and I find them quite funny with some of the comments rather strange, considering how our culture has changed in the last 65 years!

that s unheard of these days
It would be great if all ministers, priests and rabbis were so jovial and kind. That would make abstaining from sin fun!
I quite like Rev. Brougher. Who knew Groucho could play a straight man?
Beth Stachowiak Groucho is straight.
Groucho could play both sides of comedy. If you watch the Marx Brothers movies, there were many scenes in which Groucho played the straight man to Chico or Harpo, as well as many scenes in which he was cracking the jokes himself.
Groucho was one of the great straight men -- look at his routines with Chico. One of the few straight men who was funny at the same time. (Gleason was another.)
When I said straight man, I meant the half that sets up the jokes and does the responses while the other does the storytelling.
@@MissBee13George Fennerman was also the straight man on the show as well as the announcer.

What an amazing man the Minister is at 90 years of age.
numbers don t mean anything its how sharp you keep it
Thanks for putting this episode up. A great one indeed!
I actually believe Groucho was in his prime at this time😄
My sincere apologies for taking so long between posts these days. Life has been taken over by What's My Line more or less completely as of late. . .
Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life
I'm a boxing fan and u omitting Rocky mom will make this gem hard for us to find interest. This jumped to my favorite one. Looked like she was making out with the guy.
Larry Medina I honestly don't understand what you're trying to say here. I didn't omit anything.
He's referring to the title of the video. The title doesn't mention Rocky's mom.
Are there still amazingly in shape , genuinely funny people like the 90 yr old preacher ? I hope so..I don't know any but I truly hope there are folks like that out in this world still...I'm sure that man was dead 20 years before I was even born but he was a delight to watch.

Thanks so much for archiving & posting YBYL. Wonderful show, fantastic historical/cultural time-capsule & Grouch is the best!
This is one of the Best Shows EVER! Thanx 4 sharing! Groucho was the Master Comedian!
Loved seeing Rocky also. Binge watching Groucho at the moment, and there were so many great episodes! I remember some of the episodes when I was very young... which I no longer am of course. great stuff!
Its usually the baptists and pentecostal churches that laugh the most. I love the charasmatic places.
I noticed that, I went to a church and expected their praise and worship service to be a little more exciting...They're so deep in the word you'd think they'd have more instruments..since God gives us specific instruments He wants to be worshiped with..but I guess an organ is good enough for them.
Their business relies on the ultimate prank.
Its amazing how witty Groucho Marks was. He could throw out those funny lines so fast its incredible. I never realized that till now. Who would ever imagine that something so terrible was going to happen to Rocky Marciano later on . I believe he was killed in a plane crash. I was a little girl when this TV show was on the air. Nice to see Rocky's mom. Very interesting episode.
Dr. James. Brougher. Such a very good hearted down to earth guy. Love listening to him talk. He kept me glued to my smartphone until the end of this episode.
