    Thanks everyone for your feedback & nice words! I designed this arm at University & have now been working as an engineer for several years. With my improved skills & experience I am hoping to design a new and improved prosthetic arm. I would like to make this new arm more durable and actually attach it to an amputee. Subscribe to the channel and stay tuned for this in the future.

    Awesome article, I built some robotic arms back in the day so I want to just comment that the further towards the hand you move the servos (or any weight) the more leverage this weight has on your servo elbow motor reducing its load capacity. Ideally if all the motors could be moved into the shoulder region that would significantly lighten the load. I understand that having room for everything was a problem & influenced the design. Well great job and hope to see more from you in the future.

    • @MahdiDesigns
      @MahdiDesigns  5 років тому

      Hi, that's awesome, I would love to see a photo. I looped the "tendons" through the tip of each finger. There are two small holes which allow you to loop through. Best to loop multiple times so it doesn't slip, you could even use a drop of super glue to really make sure it doesn't slip

    Do you happen to know the problems that would occur in using your left hand’s pressure of holding a writing utensil and being able to use it? Like is there a way to capture the the movement it takes for a hand to hold it and develop a code for it and have that used for when certain muscles are activated at one time?

    • @MahdiDesigns
      @MahdiDesigns  3 роки тому

      I'm not sure I fully understand but many muscles work together to hold a pen for example. The sensation of touch/pressure provides feedback to allow the brain to make micro adjustments. A prosthetic hand needs many degrees of freedom and some form of feedback to the user to manipulate objects in a similar manner

    Hi, really love your work
    I’m doing something similar and I want mine to have that proportional action where the grip strength depends on the voltage, what would you suggest I do?

    • @MahdiDesigns
      @MahdiDesigns  3 роки тому

      Nice, that would be cool. You might want to smooth the EMG signals, either with a circuit or maybe just reading say 10 times and averaging. The raw signals can be noisy. Also, with low end hobby servo motors you can't really control the torque. To the best of my understanding you can only control their position and they will use their max torque to get to that position. With DC motors and your own controller you can however control the torque, so you could use the EMG signals to proportionally adjust the torque. I may do something similiar to this on the new project I'm working on as I'm using micro DC motors with motor control driver boards (motor drivers from Pololu). Hope this helps

    I really enjoyed your work! I'm also doing a project on myoelectric forearm prosthesis, and was wondering... how you approached the coding/programming- my friend suggested machine learning but i dont have time to do that and lack knowledge, do you have any suggestions?
    Also, how do you increased the degree of freedom? I have a limited budget and would like to use myoware, but to increase the DOF do you think it's possible with only 2 sensors?
    Thank you for your time:)

    • @MahdiDesigns
      @MahdiDesigns  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, thanks!
      I would suggest looking up arduino tutorials on how to control servo motors, its not too difficult. You can also look up tutorials on reading an arduino analogue to digital converter. With those two things you can read the myo sensors and use that to command the motors. Machine learning isn't necessary to start with. DOF means how many different movements you have, you can always use more myo sensors to control the additional degrees. Best of luck!

    Hey! First of all awesome that you've built this arm. It looks awesome. I would like to ask you though.. Is this suitable for someone who has no underarm and wants to use this as an actual replacement, or is this more a part for a robot? I know that u could probably use it as a prosthetic, but I dont see those things amputees have on the insides of the arm to control the movements. How do you intergrate them into the design of this arm? Or do you know who explains this online? You would really help me out since I myself am born without my left underarm, and want to built this myself. Thanks for the video, it's really helpful!
    Cheers!

      You can use EMG inside the device or an external myo arm band. I guess that's the plan here.

    • @MahdiDesigns
      @MahdiDesigns  5 років тому

      Without an underarm would be more complex. Essentially the more that is missing the more complicated the prosthetic arm replacement is in terms of design & control. This model was just a prototype, it wasn't developed enough to be used in the real world. However, an amputee in theory could still control this prototype using electrical pads on nearby muscles. The United States Military does advanced research on prosthetic arms. Search DARPA Prosthesis. In the future the technology will continue to get better and hopefully become more affordable for the people that need it =)

      @@kevinperera6129 If you have Solidworks (maybe you can access it at school) I would take some time to do some of the in built tutorials. When you have some basic skills start trying to model objects you find interesting. You can also buy am arduino (they are cheap) and look up youtube arduino tutorials. Just start small to develop basic skills. You could initially start by designing your own prosthetic finger and using a servo motor to control it. Good luck!

      That's great. This is design engineering work. You could start learning CAD modelling (Fusion360 is a free program) and also electronics and software (arduino is a good place to start). Perhaps with your medical knowledge you could find some engineers/designers and collaborate
