I highly recommend this game for your PS2 collection
From the PlayStation2 game Xenosaga I: Der Wille zur Macht
www.gamespot.co...
No other single game to date is as story-driven as Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht, a rather conventional RPG at its core, but one with an exhaustively detailed and occasionally long-winded narrative. Playing through Xenosaga involves watching an inspired anime sci-fi miniseries unfold, as the game packs in literally hours upon hours of noninteractive 3D cutscenes. You do more watching than playing sometime, but scenes can be skipped. Also, the emphasis on story means that Xenosaga isn't always the most riveting gameplay experience. However, the story is what will prove to be the main attraction for many fans of the genre--especially for fans of Xenogears, a daring 1998 RPG published by Square that, like Xenosaga, is long, complex, and heavily focused on storytelling. Both games' stories touch on some decidedly sensitive subjects, most notably by making numerous allusions to various religious faiths--and in this case, all in the context of a sweeping, melodramatic space opera. Not everyone will enjoy Xenosaga, but serious fans of RPGs or anime almost certainly will. Regardless, Xenosaga is by all means an impressive and genuine effort, one that legitimately deserves both praise and attention.
Published by Namco rather than Square but designed by the same developers as Xenogears, Xenosaga isn't directly related to Square's cult classic, but the similarities between these games will be unmistakable to those who remember Xenogears. Xenosaga is a science-fiction-themed game set thousands of years in the future, when humankind is being threatened by a mysterious, ethereal alien menace called the gnosis. Shion Uzuki is a young scientist heading up the development of a female android equipped to deal with these bizarre monstrosities. To say much more about the story would be to give away some of its surprises, but suffice it to say that some surprising events bring Shion and her android creation into league with some other unusual characters who, coincidentally or not, are headed to the same destination. Along the way, they will face the wrath of the gnosis, a number of shadowy political factions, a deranged and masochistic villain, and more in a story that's rife with intrigue. All this unfolds in cutscenes that sometimes go on for more than 30 minutes at a time, so thankfully you can pause them.
Religious references come into play in Episode I, filled with monsters, giant robots, and science-fiction conventions. The game's use of things like images of crucifixes, the Hebrew alphabet, the number 666, and direct references to the Bible and cabala seem as though they're in there for shock value at points. Some may be offended, while others may find it unusual, along with the game's subtitle, which translates as "The Will to Power" and is a reference to the work of German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Others will probably think it's cool. Definitely unusual material to see in a role-playing game. Refreshing and new from the usual Final Fantasy doldrums of late.

greg kesavin...that man was the one guy whos word i could 100% trust when i was younger buying games.
This guy and Classic Game Room are the best reviewers ever. I don’t know why Gamespot would let him go
I'm far, far more obbessed with the Xenosaga series than any one person should be.
I have to remember that there wasn't games like these during the days. The RPGs were all gameplay and little story. This game had loads of cutscenes and that was a big deal back then.
Should I buy this game I love final fantasy and rpgs so yeah. I want just honest opinions on the game and if i should get it or not.
Xenogears is, to date, my #1 game. It is my absolute favorite. Now, I know that Xenosaga isn't exactly a sequel to Xenogears, but, just judging from personal experiences, if I loved Xenogears both in the way it tells its MASSIVE story and in the way the game world flows in general, will there be enough for me to like about Xenosaga that will make the adventure of tracking down a copy worth it?
always wanted to play xenogears, xenosaga was the eye open theer for me for its dynamic story and realism for history in futurism
greg kasavin was so rad. i remember being 13 at my grandfathers house on his brand new windows 95 and waiting 15 mins for gamespot to load so i can watch his video reviews.
Games are just becoming more cinematic. This was one of the first games that was very cinematic. I'd say Xenogears was probably the first, if not it was on a different level of plot driven games than any other. There is a lot less resistance to heavily cut-scene driven games, but when Xenosaga first came out everyone was up in arms about it. The games was just ahead of the industry.
oh damn. i miss playing this one! i have so much fun playing this. sometimes i forget how sweet ps2 games was back then. the cut scenes, i love it. this game was the one that got me into space etc games, may have to pull out the good old ps2 sometimes,
Now this is what I call a real review. Definitely very well done and I agree with everything you said.
Xenosaga is a great game and definitely recommandable to everyone who like anything similar to this. So much fun..
the only thing that's unfortunate is people not giving credit to the Xenosaga series.
Very, very worthy of Xenogears prequels.
Watched this video to research other monolith soft games before xenoblade. I was aware of this and xenogears when they came out, but my interest in rpgs was waning back then xenoblade chronicles has brought me back.
U should get it. If you love deep story lines then get this! It's one of the best RPG games for the PS2!
Love this series!!! I played Episode III first, because I had no information on the games, and had no idea they were all directly connected. I'm playing Episode I right now, and it's so good!
I love Xenosaga and I didn't have an issue with anything he said. Everything he said about the game is absolutely true, just because a reviewer doesn't go into a frenzy and says "OMFG DIS IZ DA BEST GAME EVARRRRRRRR!!!!11!!1 ANY1 WHO DUN LIEK DIS GAEM IS DUM" doesn't mean he didn't like it.
AHHHHHHHHH GREG!!! ITS Greg!!! im buying this game for sure now!
@theelusiveone you have a point, but I played the game for about 10 hours and I wasn't having fun =/. So, maybe I missed something, I actually saw a cut scene with one of the villains and momo, and it looked hardcore, so yeah, I'm giving this game one more try.
i just ordered this game from ebgames website since i havent been able to find it in any of the shops where i live. i really cant wait for it to arrive because i already have episode 2 and 3 but cant start those without episode 1 :DD .... i also ordered wild arms 3 and tales of legendia hehe
"no game has ever had as many and as frequent cut scenes"
well, Solid Snake was great at sneaking...
the cutscene to this game is way too cool it's like watching a cg anime and playing a game all at the same time and the story is catchy too i don't like turn based fighting system that much but this game is just some thing else.
@StupidPilot
Amen brother!
Managed six hours before being cutscened completely unconcious.
I loved the card game XenoCard.
Easily one of the most ambitious Japanese RPG's ever.
This is the best Xeno game ever made.
I've only played Episode 3 (don't hit me), but it's become one of my favorite games.Should I get the first 2? This one looks really good, but I heard that Jr. was the main character of the 2nd one. I like Jr., but I like my Shion, chaos, and KOS-MOS party, and I always use the main character..
I really wish I was more into this kind of story. I tried playing this game, and after sitting through my first 15 min cut scene, I was shaking my head in disappointment. It's clearly not a bad game, just far too slow for me. I was even aware of the long cut scenes before hand and had braced myself for the journey but in the end, I lacked the ambition.
Good review.
Same here, couldn't agree more.
well, im agnostic and i guess you do bring up a good point. ill go check it out.
this series is awesome!!!!
wished they made more games... =(
@ShyBoy6D9 There's only a few cutscenes that reach that length. The longest one in the game is about 45 minutes and happens about 3-ish hours in (and is one of a couple that have save points mid way through).
That aside, however, how can they NOT sound fun? This is not some whimpy little fluff game, it is an EPIC. And epics need plot and character development, and that means story, and that means cutscenes. And those cutscenes are awesome, and the game is awesome.
I am playing this again because it was great! I wished they went all the way to 6 like they were originally planning on doing! :)
I can't argue with that. Everyone has their own point of view... >.> But Im sticking with Xenogears.
@Jiyanamiki are you nuts the 1st games graphics looked much better, in 2 they looked like characters that a college student made for a class project. they were pretty flat the faces and the body.
the voice actors that were changed were for the most important characters kosmos, shion, jr, chaos, ziggy, im not sure about albedo though theres probably others i didnt mention. for people that really get attached to a character thats one of the worse things that could happen,.....
man this game is great. i am a final fantasy fan and this series is #2 for me. the only thing i dont like about this is that i want to play the game but there are too many cutscenes lol gonna grab xenosaga 2,3 soon
Can you play these games, on a PAL ps3- backward compatable console, via import?
i would say on the vector ship after the gnosis attack *slight spoiler*
sorry.. but sounds like where when u get in fight u get gameover (u hit 0 they hit 9999) theres a way to get by everyone of them.
I am christian I don't have a problem with the game it is fiction. I don't have a problem with Atheists either. This game is sweet and RPG fans should play it.
By far my favourite series that I have played for the passed 16 years!
@xenofan1000 i wasnt relly connected to them untill the 3rd game. or i didnt realize that i was untill episode 3 that is.
He called KOS MOS an android, but technically she's a gynoid. Androids are robots modeled to appear male, gynoids, female.
Yes.
I didn't think it was to hard until about 10 hours in, I shouldn't say to hard, just to frustrating to the point were I just got bored trying to grind my way to get past a boss. I do wish to get back to it at some point though, as I was really enjoying the game.
I have Xenosaga. It's really fun but i can't get past the Gnosis!!! Please help me!!
why don't make Xenosaga collection i beat it would sale out fast and people will love
Technically, everybody already knows what an android is while all of about five people are familiar the term gynoid. Technically, tomatoes are fruit too but I rarely contradict others when they call it a vegetable - some people might think I was pretentious.
Xenoblade!!!!!!!
:] this game is awsome
Is it pronounced Xenosaga like he says it in the video or is it Xenosaga like with a double "e" like meet.
ill always be a kingdom hearts man but this is a good game
@EmbraceDorkhood I can't voice my opinion just because it conflicts with someone else's?
Plus I never said that I don't like FF7; there are plenty of good games that are over-rated.
I thought Mass Effect would compare to the story of Xenosaga but the Xenosaga series cast a very long shadow. Mass Effect 2 and 3 were little more than Micheal Bay quality sci-fi stories. The games took no risk and catered to the mass market. If Xenosaga had action gameplay like the ME, or just wasn't so damn hard the series would have made it to 6 episodes. I've met a couple of people who never beat Xenosaga 1 because they said it was too hard.
so Xenosaga really is good game?
Iam starting to get into anime and have 4 anime ps2 games
Are Xenosaga and Xenoblade related?
@ShyBoy6D9 Well then, you're in luck. :p Episode 1 has about 8 hours of cutscenes, and at a minimum, 35 hours of gameplay. Much more if you try and go after/get everything you can.
how long is the gameplay?
This game is frustrating to figure out. Is a strategy guide necessary? I'll get on if it is. The game play is OK, but the what is hard is the fighting it is just irritating.
XENOGEARS PWNS XENOSAGA! >_>...
I'm at the beggining when I send Shion to sleep. Then I have to sneak past all the Gnosis.
so ... did you get passed it
The first xenosaga could use a remake.
@ShyBoy6D9 I mean that it's not just a bunch of mindless pointless things happening disguised as some sort of related series of events, like so many other games, whose plots and characters are as thin as paper. There's depth of plot and character here that requires time to develop, and attention to follow or you'll be lost fairly quikly.
Also, if you lose interest that fast, must be hard watching TV shows, not to mention movies. >.>
This game beats Kingdom hearts a longshot
the only ways is if we get all the fans what it but beside that i agree theres no hope..
@UndercoverCracker that is their opinion, just because someone has an opinion different than yours, don't get all high and mighty about it
@Jiyanamiki but if you like Xenosaga 2 more power to you. you just happen to like what most fans hate about the series.
heres reason 6.5, the introduction of jin into the main characters >:(
thats all i have to say about Episode 2, now i just have to get my hands on the other 3 games and try them
Scion Uzuki? An ancestor of Citan Uzuki?
I always thought Shion was hot.
Nice, a new convert! :D
The first and third games are awesome. The second has its moments, but its too plodding and the battle system is crap. The fights take waaaaay too long. It shouldn't take 25 minutes to kill the boss when you're 20+ levels over what's required to beat the game. >_
it's unfortunate really, that it failed at being worthy of even the shadow of what xenogears was.
@MegaCoolkid209 if you hate it so much y do u watch the videos
Its games like this that makes me really hate region locking
Hey anybody get to play this ps2 game on their PS3system??
There are no games that have this many cutscenes. If there were, those games would probably be called something like Metal Gear Solid, but there aren't any games I know that are like that. None at all.
It's very unlikely that'll ever happen now. The Xenosaga franchise is jointly owned by Namco/Bandi and Monolith Software, and Monolith is now owned wholly by Nintendo. So there would be a lot of legal hoop jumping and property rights issues to deal with before any sort of re-release of the series (or development of anything new, for that matter) could ever happen. :/
I don't see how. The first game is the best of the series. 3's great, but it's not quite up to the awesomeness of 1.
@Sentinal6 Absolutely NOT.
oh i didnt know they showed the dissapearance of lost jarusalem
"it might offend some people" what?
@PenanceOmega No idea, but get it, now. Episode 2 is kinda meh, they really dropped the ball on it, but 1 and 3 have more than enough awesomeness to pick up the slack.
FUCK YEAH KASSSAAAVVVINNNNN!!!!!
@onehandedgamer The Zohar's are named after the 12 disciples of Jesus, another character had 666 printed on his forehead after a plot point those are the direct references.
why do most of the game made by them have xeno in their name
Where were you, story wise, at 10 hours?
And you really don't need to grind much in this game. As long as you fight all enemies in your path, and use the right types of attacks against the right enemies, and spend your T, S, and E points wisely, the game works out pretty well on its own.
@fernandoiscrazy Episode 1 yes.
2 no
3 yes
as far as the graphics go youre talking about last gen graphics so of course they dont look that great now (although #2 always looked bad and has very annoying battles)
@MegaCoolkid209 Very true :)
this game is just awesome!!
Zenuhgeers!
I want it know
D:
the saga is sooo great
long but very fun
i have played all
of them accept this
one >.> Hmm im to weird
@xenofan1000 I didnt hate it at all. It was different but you get used to it...Geeze people need to calm down. its already been made.
I came here to convince myself to playing it. I always search for an rpg with good storyline, but the cutscenes are kinda a let down - one thing that they are long like they said, but the pace is really slow and the dialogue lines are not exactly awe inspiring so far. Picked it up since new torment is not coming this year just yet ;p
Have you finished it yet? I consider playing it
Antonio Augusto great game play it!!
I kinda enjoy the cutscenes kinda draws me in and it’s better than reading literally mountain of text and physically having to click through all of it. Happy they went the extra mile to put in the cutscenes voiced.
it's "Zee-noh saga" ZEEEENOH, not "Zehno" lol
I prefer Xenogears to this.
then go to a Xenogears video
Why waste time commenting then. Go away gearsy
not watching a 7 minute review ... simply put, is this related to Xenogears?
Why are religious references considered creepy or unusual? I know a lot of people did not like them in this game but its what I enjoyed most about the game.
actually "e" is pronounced "eh" in japanese, so either way is correct.
Too Hard??? I never found any of the games hard at all.. but needless to say, each game was amazing and fantastic overall. Episode 2 was weakest for me, but still good.. plus the voice acting changed.
This has got to be my favorite RPG/Trilogy Series of all time. I've never experienced a story so in depth and intricate being so well done ever.
No FF game has had a better story, and many rpgs still don't come close even to this day. Be nice to see other games match the amazement of Xenosaga.
Yea, I think episode 2 killed the series they tried to do to much different, but three was great! 1 is still my favorite tho by far, too 5!
@mgvortex66 your my kind of person
I loved number one number two I didnt like how they changed shion. and I havent got past rubedos past thing. Its boring
Don't know if I should sell this game, or give this game a 5th time after 3 years -_- The 3rd game was really really better, but this one put me to sleep so many times.
Its like mass effect series edie reminds me of cosmos mass effect has better combat.
