I like how you pointed out the window washing, since I've always called the so-called "side quests" chores in this game. They didn't just feel like chores, some of them were actually your in game characters doing literal chores.
By all measures, agree with your take Hellfire. Two was such an oddball out in so many ways, including that it was the only Xenosaga released in PAL territories. One small thing on the music front is that Yuki Kaijura did all of the cutscenes while Shinji Hosoe did all of the actual in game music. Part of the problem is the massive clash of styles between these two. Yuki is more ethereal in anything she writes and really hits that note well by the third game where she does it all solo (thankfully) while Shinji is very much into super electronic beats and sounds that often, not always, but often just do not mesh with the feel and story of Xenosaga. It's truly baffling that they would only release part 2 of one of the most complex and epic stories ever told. It's like they were trying to sabotage their own series... such a shame.
I remember the combat system in X2. The difficulty curve hit like a truck after the first "dungeon". The game pratically tells you: ok now, you have to understand how this battle system work if you don't want to spend hours in battles.
The thing I find most jarring was the change in shions personality from episode 1 to 2. That could just be because the different voice actress but she seemed so much more hostile and aggressive in the second for no reason
Ngl I may be in the minority but I dont care. I preferred 2 more than 1. I really loved the new mechanics, story and music. And I love Rubido's character so having a game focus mostly on his story was great
Xenosaga is a great trilogy as a whole, but 2 was such a disappointment, and I 100% agree with what you say in this review. But combat mechanics with the combo system kills it for me as you ALWAYS do the exact same thing in every single battle, not just the boss fights, and it gets so tedious by the end. But it's also the shortest game in the series and 3 is definitely the best!
After the first one, this one just felt slow. And I agree, the character remakes just didn't do it for me. Luckily, the third one is a great game. Probably the best of the three.
Paul Cooper I take it you haven’t played Episode I in ages? Episode II has far faster animations. I feel like a lot of Episode I fans do not view Episode II rationally, at all.

But in my recollection, I hated the first game, it was a slog, had one piece of battle music and tons of mandatory grinding with a terribly slow and convoluted battle system. I remember really liking the basically everything about Xenosaga 2 more. Better character design, better battle system, more music variety, more interesting narrative due to cutscenes being executed with more visual flair.
I thought the first one was slow and this is Slower! Not surprisingly I used a cheat device to speed past combat in this game and play the real gem that is Ep3
First Xenosage I played was 3. Even with out knowing everything before hand, I loved the game all the same. Hated 2, I'd only give it 60%. Xenosaga 1 is still great.
Way back in the day I loved ep1 but this one was so different I didn't go all the way to ep3. Now its so hard to play them unless you got a old ps2. I so wanted the remakes to happen :(
Another excellent review. I really enjoy these. I just finished Ep 2 today and I think your review hit it on the head. While the combat is complicated, IF you can master it, the game becomes quite easy, which is a good thing as the epic story is great and I was forced to miss out on it in my youth because I could not grasp the battle mechanics. I did not have this problem this time around, and blew through the game in under 30 hours. Your take on the graphics and voice acting is also spot on. I did NOT prefer it to the first game, and am looking forward to moving on to Ep 3, which I heard has some of the Ep 1 cast returning. I am having some massive ps 2 loading issues with Ep 3, otherwise I would have gotten more into it today, and am hopeful I can continue playing as I will be very disappointed if I cannot complete this great series. I have never played Ep 3 either. I am very much looking forward to your Ep 3 review video, and wish you the best of luck on your "know the facts" video, as it will be insanely complicated to piece it all together lol. Pretty much agree with everything you said, although I preferred the ES mechs to the AGWS. There was at least a use for them here. I think I used AGWS for a whole 2 battles in the first game. A couple other things that really annoyed me is how you could sneak up on an enemy in the field, but somehow end up being surrounded when the battle begins. Also thought it was extremely lazy on their part to make us run through the same dungeon twice. It does kinda make sense from a story perspective, but there had to have been a better way to present that section.
Darn, how did I miss this! UA-cam suggestions, you've been letting me down. I agree Xenosaga II was weaker, and I resent that it may have killed my favorite series... but I for one still loved it. A lot of the music was dodgy and the change in tone startling, but I still found many of the tracks composed by Kajiura, such as "Lamentation" and "She's Coming Back". Many complain about the difficulty/grindiness, but I don't remember that at all... must because I played it when I was younger and had a lot more time. Ha! Either way, it's still my fondest hope that someday it is remastered, and the full Perfect Works vision completed.

The combat is the aspect of the game that bothered me the most during my initial playthrough as a kid, but after doing a lot of research and preparation, I've been able to find a lot more ways to make the combat a lot more bearable and while I still find combat takes far too long, it's not as bad once you know a lot about weaknesses and how to exploit them. It's too bad they weren't able to do all 6 games they wanted and connect back to Xenogears. Maybe then the final game wouldn't be so rushed.
Wow this was a really high quality modern review of a game series that seems like it should have a lot more notoriety still today. The review didn't spoil anything for me, while still showing and mentioning just enough teases of game play and ideas that the game explores to get me really excited to play the game. I just searched this up after FINALLY playing Xenoblade Chronicles X, neglecting it for years after buying it and never doing anything with it because it just didn't feel like the original Xenoblade Chronicles to me. Anyways I finally came around to playing the game and now I want a game that is more similar to Xenoblade Chronicles X and this review kind of cemented that continuing the explore the Xeno series further is what I'm gunna do. I'll check out your review of Episode 1 and 3 first, but I'm pretty sure I'll play these after seeing this, even if you're saying this is the weak point in the series from what I'm understanding. when this game came out i fell in love with this game. i didnt think much of the sidequest but the story, music and battle system were just perfect to me back when this first came out. then i remember going on gamefaqs afterwards and seeing a lot of people saying how much this game sucked ass. i was so confused... i never got around to playing the third game, which i own lol... i just remember loving the character s so much in this game. choas being my favorite. jr, albedo, momo, jin, shion, kosmos!!! i liked just about everyone, even some of the baddies lol. jr. always gave me billy vibes from xenogears just because of the hair style and guns. >___>
I remember it was a grind to play through in 2004 and did not enjoy it had it not been for the story. I wouldn't recommend people playing it today though. There are full fmvs and games scenes on youtube that I would rather recommend people to watch that if they want to keep up with the story.
I honestly don't mind the more realistic designs of the characters in this entry nor the audio designs. I understand your gripes with everything else, though.
The story kept me going with this game. Yes there are a ton of flaws and some of the sidequests were so bad they felt like your teeth were getting pulled. Lots of very annoying parts in this 2nd game for sure. But the story maintains it’s good flow and I was very much hooked to see how it went. Didn’t even bother with the endgame content. It’s not necessary at all as that side quest really doesn’t matter much to the big story. I will highly recommend playing this one with a guide. It makes it slightly more bearable.
Thank God for episode 3, because this game didn't do KOS-MOS any justice, despite being on the cover of the game. Case in point; 7:20, from a highly sophisticated battle android that's armed to the teeth and can take out legions of enemies to a window washer. That simple side quest reflects perfectly how KOS-MOS got the short end of the stick in this game. Yes, I know that story wise this game is meant to focus on the backstory of some of the other characters, but still they could've shared the spotlight with KOS-MOS given that she is the central protagonist and the mascot of the series.
I remember playing the first game way back in the early 2000’s and absolutely loving it and eagerly looked forward to the sequel.. only to be disappointed by what it ended up being. It’s not a bad game by any means, but it’s a massive drop off when compared to the excellent first game (And the 3rd is in between the 1st and 2nd games in terms of quality)
I really love teh xenosaga series, but This is still the only game of the three I"ve only completed once. I've tried multiple times to get through it, but after goign through the digital forest for momo(?) just remember hall ways of forests with stupid mobs, that slog just killed any motivation to keep going.

Love the 1st game , but episode 2 what a f*ckin drag! They f'ed up so much with this game, horribly tedious battle system, bland visuals, voice actors sounded off or some were replaced, and too much time was spent on the U.R.T.V.'s (I like Jr., Gaignun, and Albedo but really didnt need all that backstory). I only managed to get through this game once, its just sooo boring. The only ways Id ever replay it is if 1. it were remastered with the others (id force my way through a 2nd time) 2. it was remade and all 3 games had the same combat without any of 2's tedious crap. I'd prefer the 1st games Xenogears inspired combat but 3's standard menu based stuff would work too. Would not be happy with a more action rpg approach either, that pretty much soured me on Square's rpgs starting with FF12. Episode 3 was pretty good even though I really didnt like Shion in it she kind of was an idiot.
I personally really like this game, I only really find Kosmos to have bad voice actor in this game. I actually think Chaos was an improvement and Momo was about the same quality. Lucky for us Shion and Kosmos voice actors from 1 returns in 3. The music is great imo, sure there are some bad tracks(but I do like episode 1 soundtrack more still). The Combat has Its issues but when you understand it Its quite fun imo, I do like ES battles, sure Its simple but that does not have to be a bad thing. In your rating system this would be a 80-85% for me I think. I prefer this trilogy over Xenogears by quite a huge margin. Mainly because the translation is so much better and have much better dungeons.(Xenogears dungeons are terrible imo). Good video.
I wish the developers could've stuck with some of the old stuff like the battle system, the original voice actors, skills and so fourth. If they did they probably would've had a successful 6 part series.
I loved Xenosaga episode 2 story wise but the game overall felt like such a such a step backwards presentation wise. I also disliked the new look for Shion. I loved the post credit scene revelation about Chaos though, which got me pumped for episode 3.
yea this game is a little slow but i did use some cheats to give me extra class, skill points and extra items and it made the battles go faster since I got stronger skills a little quicker.
Voice acting in this was almost as bad as the hand textures. KOS-MOS and Shion were the worst. "Oh no, poor Momo." sums how I feel about it. Story started off well but fell off after Momo's subconscious section. My main problem is that it felt like nothing happened after that. The shift away from Gnosis was very jarring. Battle system was engaging enough but far from X1
I don't completely hate this game but it is by far the worst in the Xeno franchise for me. I didn't really care for the gameplay, but the music and story were great. The voices were... Ok. The only one that legitimately bothered me was Shion at first, but as the game went on it grew on me. The original was sorely missed. I do find it hilarious that they took out shops and then proceeded to make them a "feature" on the back of the boxart for Xenosaga 3.
I don't like the direction they went with with episode 2 at all it's really a different game all together it feels like. It feels like it has no connection to the 1st one at all. I'm bothered by that but i just want to get through the story. Hopefully ep3 is much better
Cast is a downgrade mostly except for Joshua Seth as chaos even though he is known for Tai its hard to notice because he did a good job. I also like Shions new clothes it shows character progression and i hate her big eyes in the first game, there is anime eyes and then there is X1 Shion.

Ep3 OST was my favorite of the trilogy, it also helped you could listen to it while playing unlike ep1 where it only played in cutscenes

Xenosaga I&II DS had the second game with the battle system of the first and Shion is the MC.

I loved Xenosaga episode 2 story wise but the game overall felt like such a such a step backwards presentation wise. I also disliked the new look for Shion. I loved the post credit scene revelation about Chaos though, which got me pumped for episode 3.
Yeah, it made me jump straight into the third. Luckily I didn't have to wait years for the release.
An amazing series but it just left so many things unexplained.
yea this game is a little slow but i did use some cheats to give me extra class, skill points and extra items and it made the battles go faster since I got stronger skills a little quicker.
Developers did not know what were doing and were mixing up
The story was great, but the battle system made it virtually unplayable. It’s no wonder the series flopped after this entry.
My biggest problem with this one was the combat I hated it.
Bought this and glad i didnt waste any more time on it after the first 2 hours . Even better i paid $20😅

Voice acting in this was almost as bad as the hand textures. KOS-MOS and Shion were the worst. "Oh no, poor Momo." sums how I feel about it. Story started off well but fell off after Momo's subconscious section. My main problem is that it felt like nothing happened after that. The shift away from Gnosis was very jarring. Battle system was engaging enough but far from X1
Why FEI does not appear on this game?
I don't completely hate this game but it is by far the worst in the Xeno franchise for me. I didn't really care for the gameplay, but the music and story were great.
The voices were... Ok. The only one that legitimately bothered me was Shion at first, but as the game went on it grew on me. The original was sorely missed.
I do find it hilarious that they took out shops and then proceeded to make them a "feature" on the back of the boxart for Xenosaga 3.

I don't like the direction they went with with episode 2 at all it's really a different game all together it feels like. It feels like it has no connection to the 1st one at all. I'm bothered by that but i just want to get through the story. Hopefully ep3 is much better
Cast is a downgrade mostly except for Joshua Seth as chaos even though he is known for Tai its hard to notice because he did a good job. I also like Shions new clothes it shows character progression and i hate her big eyes in the first game, there is anime eyes and then there is X1 Shion.
I liked the full anime style more than what they did with Episode 3. Ep 3 is better than both though. I love it so far.

Episode 2 was the weakest of the trilogy, especially what you mentioned about grinding and the somewhat complex battle system.
The art style is vastly superior to ep1 BUT the in game visuals were 🤮
Love 3 and 1 but this was a massive dissapointment. Xenosaga 2 Stopped being fun and turned into a grind.
