I was about to say nice to see you put some content in for Jasper and then he even gets a shout out! Great video, food looked amazing, but it's sad to hear about the hotel experience. The selfishness of some people when travelling just seems to be getting worse as time goes on!
hello scott. those hot and cold water tops are there to shutt off water, in case there is water leak in the shower or sink, or even the toilette. this way they don't need to shutt off the water on the whole building.
Such a shame a few idiots in your hotel spoilt your stay Scott. Alas, it's not unique to Greece. At least you had a couple of cracking old towns and harbours to wander around though. I remember having a day trip to Chania when I was in Crete a good few years ago & I visited a Commonwealth War Graves site. I'm an ex-coal miner from an old mining village in Sunderland & I stumbled across a war grave of this 18 year old young 'un from a mining village in Northumberland. That really choked me - poor kid 😟
Worth mentioning that both Chania and Heraklion are working cities. Though tourism is important to Crete, it makes up just under half of the economy, with agriculture and industry making up a significant proportion. There are plenty of tourist orientated resorts east and west of both cities, with much better beaches. Neo Chora translates as “town beach” Not sure how you paid for the bus tickets Scott but assumed you didn’t try to pay using contactless on the bus itself??
Loved it, Crete's a great place, family holiday memories, shed loads of history, scenery to match. Samaria gorge is a fabulous place on the south side of the Island and Falasarna beach is fabulous on the west coast.
I live in cold but beautiful Quebec. I’ve been travelling to the Aegean every year since 2008 (except covid). First time in Kriti this very summer with my wife and teen. We felt in love with the cretan spirit and way of life ! Esa is the best beer, by the way ! Old Chania and Old Heraklion are fantastic, even though there’s a lot of people. Then we spent a whole week on the southern shore of the island (Sfakion, Loutro, Plaka, etc.) and it was paradise. A must experience… experience ! Yassas ! And… efkaristo poli. Scott ! You’re the best, but mad to have walked THE breakwater of whole Greece !
Nice video, Scott, thanks. I had a two week holiday there about 17 years ago, love Crete. Must be more traffic now, because we hired a car and the Chania - Heraklion drive was really nice. Not as good as Chania to Elafonnisi on the south cost though, along a road winding through mountains. complete with tunnels and herds of sheep wandering around on the tarmac. Never had to change gear so many times on a two hour drive = but well worth, Elafonissi is the perhaps the beautiful beach I've ever been to, all pink sand and warm shallow water and little coves to sit in. Loved it. I'm told now it's oversold, with coach loads of people coming and going all season and restricted access.....
Oh Scott a man with my own niggles in a hotel! Chair draggers and the Door Slamming Assoc. honorary members... Pain in the you know what. Enjoyed the video. 👍👍
Thanks Scott...I love Crete and the Cretians. By the way there is a very good Greek eaterie in Glasgow called Yiammas in Bath Street near the Buchanan Galleries. 🇬🇷😋
1st thing I pack when working overseas is earplugs. Get some quies ear plugs... Best, orange, green and red, u will find the softness u need for a good night's sleep
Small trivia item for you! The super yacht you mentioned at 11:02 was actually the one they filmed Season 7 of the TV show "Below Deck: Mediterranean" on board! If the TV show is anything to go by, I think you had more of a lucky escape than you thought lol.
We visited Xania in 2006. I had a terrible headache then so I didn't enjoy it then. Happy to see the things I missed now. Heraklion is more enjoyable before 12:30 in our experience; a lovely city. We saw a lot of the island by rental car.
Recently found this channel after you bumped into Steve Marsh returning from one of his trips - like the style and the channels, no messing and honesty - I’m retiring soon so will have the time, the problem being buses - I’m 6’7” - don’t think I’d last for long 😀. Sensible travel, - wasn’t aware of how cheap the budget airlines can be if you think laterally and are flexible on time and destination, - How you guys manage 7 hour switch overs? - And avoid Bercy Bus station if at all possible.
Association of door bangers lol I often bump into them. My phone stopped working in Rhodes due to heat . Think you would like Rhodes Town, Corfu and Kos town although they are a bit touristy but some nice history.
Hi Scott, it's Tony from Carlisle (Avanti man) Crete, love the place! I wish I knew you were coming, you could have come and stopped with us for the night! We've been back over for 6 weeks and flew back just the on the Thursday Jet2 flight back to GLA. We spend a lot of time in Greece, Crete especially Just round the corner from the El Greco is a busy street with tourist shops. Opposite the El Greco is a fantastic place for Gyros (pronounced eero) called Kalamaki (take away) Iraklio is a fantastic city, loads of great wee bars, genuine Greek eateries (where the Greeks eat). Iraklio airport is a bit, if not very dismal, but the new is due to open in around 3 years nearer to Chersonissos with a larger more modern terminal with more capacity.
Apart from Knossos by Heraklion, there are 3 brilliant museums. My favourite is the one with the displays of the Cretan/British fighters from the second world war. Incredible.
The taps on the wall are isolation valves. So if a repair or a leak happens easy access to shut off. Not in Greece alone but most of mainland Europe, lived in Germany for a while, my apartment had them
There was a road down to the harbour in Heraklion that had all street food down it. You could start off at the with starters and finish with dessert at the bottom
Another great video, Scott. I have been to Crete twice courtesy of the US Army. This was back in the mid 80's when we would fly down from Germany via C-130 for a week so we could fire our missiles. They were Air Defense missiles and needed plenty of space to fire them. Basically, we would fly down on a Wednesday and return the following Wednesday. After our aircraft recognition tests, battle drills were finished the 2nd day we would fire the missiles the 3rd day. After that we were free to explore and enjoy Crete until Tuesday for the Missile Away Party. The next morning it was back on the C-130 for a 6-hour flight back to Spangdahlem Air Base. I really enjoyed Crete and the NATO Missile Firing Installation was close to Chania so that was where the free bus took us. I spent may an evening there having a nice meal and consuming mass quantities of beer.
Another great video thanks, funny, informative, entertaining. Earplugs can help, with the adjoining guest problem. I always still hear my alarm clock anyway
Great video as always Scott. Regarding those taps I've seen similar in Germany! Out of the way near the toilet and also wondered what they were used for. Perhaps they turn off / on the hot and cold water pressure for the bathroom?
Spent two years of my life on Crete, a wonderful time. I spent christmas and new year of 1985 in the old harbour of Chania, Yiorgo's Bar if you know it. It's fair to say the things have changed .. I'm not at all sure for the better, there's no way on earth that any food bought there in the mid eighties would be more expensive than in the UK. No yachts there either, never mind big ones. maybe one or two fishermens boats but that was it .. loved the Raki :)
My wife and I stayed in Rethimno, which you may have passed through on the way to Heraklion. It has a nice old town. We had hired a car and saw quite a lot of the south coast.
Cats on the Greek islands are always looked after. The locals usually look out for them. Many of the islands (Rhodes, Skiathos for example) have dedicated teams looking after them, and the hotels have buckets you can drop food off :) 😊
I've seen those hot and cold water valves on the wall also in Spain. I think in many places in Europe it's usual to have main on/off valves for the whole fresh water system in every apartment or in main bathroom, only they are hidden behind small door or similar.
I had 2 weeks in Chania last January. Loved the place.Very chilled at that time of year and often had temperatures in the low 20's which was nice. I ate a few times at a local cafe off the old town square where many locals went. They did a main meal, side salad and beer for 7 euros at lunchtime. Are freshly cooked stews as the main. Often had snail stew as an option but I gave that a miss!
Great video, enjoyed watching that, never been to these places and having seen the sights through your eyes I won't be visiting, not for me. Such a shame about the noise, people do forget hotels have other guests too. I have a few days off between now and end of the year, a citybreak calls me, not yet decided where. I think taking a leaf out of your book and looking what's sensibly prices flights wise is the way to go, any London airport will work for me. Might even be Glasgow, although in winter, perhaps not.
Great vid. Hotel looked off beaten track but nice way to keep costs down. Would be great to know all the little costs involved. Flights, hotel, buses, food and drinks.
It was fun seeing you walk streets where I was just a few weeks ago at Heraklion! Sad you missed the Minoan archeology museum, it's one of the best museums in Europe. But super neat to see parts of the city I missed.
The wall taps are here in Spain too. I think they are for emergency shutting down the water supply .. in case of. Never seen that in the Netherlands either. Love your vids btw!
I must’ve been on Crete around the same time as you (September). We spent a week on Crete (Rethymno) and spent most of it exploring the island in a hire car. It was a bit hectic driving around but I adjusted quite quickly. Slightly jealous of your prices. We spent ~ £850 on easyJet from Gatwick to Chania and back for the 2 of us. And then £550 for the hotel / apartment complex for 6 nights but the room was much nicer than the ones you stayed in.
Best stuffed tomatoes and fresh orange juice I’ve had anywhere was in Crete. Lost my hubby then boyfriend many years ago at a ‘Greek night’ in a village in the hills. Found him eventually sitting on the floor underneath the bar with the Scottish holiday rep escorting us called Will. They were positioned each under a barrel guzzling a stream of beer or wine…can’t remember what exactly lol next day was our last day and he was laid up ill all day while I went to the beach. I went on to marry him by the way 😂
As ever really informative, always feel like you are travelling with a friend and just chatting so naturally. I've never been to Greece ,would love to, but as you said, the two towns you went to seem to be a place to not linger too long. I'd prefer somewhere a bit off the beaten track. In many ways it reminded me of Malta, not surprising as it's a Mediterranean island. I'm half Maltese would love to see you do a video in Malta. You would have loved the Maltese buses if you have never been. So sad when they got rid of them for more generic buses. I always look forward to your content here.
The taps on the wall are another form of stopcock, for if repairs need to be done on the plumbing in the bathroom. Very commonly found in Greek bathrooms, and not just in hotels.

Great video Scott, there is a new airport being built for Heraklion that will move the flights away from the city that is due to open in a few years, but this is Greece so will see if they finish it ass expected
Hi Scott, really enjoyed the longer vid !! I was in Herakleion in last year as a stop on a cruise, your are correct 1 afternoon was plenty 😂 !! I've been to plenty of greek islands hit Tinos last may was absolutely fantastic Ferry from Athens
I just love how down to earth this man is, no flashing around, etc
I was about to say nice to see you put some content in for Jasper and then he even gets a shout out! Great video, food looked amazing, but it's sad to hear about the hotel experience. The selfishness of some people when travelling just seems to be getting worse as time goes on!
Steve was that your luxury yacht from Sunseeker in Poole. I’m sure you and Alicja would look grand in that. 😊
The saga continues
Loved your video Scott! I would have loved to see your UV light tests again. It was so ASMR! Thank you for all your fantastic videos
Steve Marsh would melt there and his wallet would go into cardiac arrest😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Get what you pay for unfortunately, average hotel means average humans around😟
I first went to the Greek islands in the early 70's, fell in love with the place, the people and the food and it's still my favourite destination.
hello scott. those hot and cold water tops are there to shutt off water, in case there is water leak in the shower or sink, or even the toilette. this way they don't need to shutt off the water on the whole building.
Or the inbuilt bidet inside the toilet
Good editing.
I like your format, It's straight to the point with little thoughts and stories. Exactly how I like it.
I agree. No meandering. No fat. Just the interesting parts.
Yeah no time wasting straight into the Action, British UA-camrs are brilliant at this. Scots are probably the most concise too or Northerners.
Just came back from Greece this week I did the island hoping on four islands, Such a amazing experience beautiful place
Thanks for the memories, Scott. I went to Heraklion and Chania about 6 years ago. Also took the bus to Agios Nicholas. Had an awesome time. Cheers.
I love Chania. Would happily spend a week there.
We drove around Crete for 3 weeks and saw some crazy local driving. Absolutely worth renting a car and explore the South and East of the island.
Looks like you had a blast in Crete with some delicious food and drink!
I lived on a small Greek island but took holidays in Crete :) Love it! The excavations at Knossos outside Heraklion are stunning.
Such a shame a few idiots in your hotel spoilt your stay Scott. Alas, it's not unique to Greece. At least you had a couple of cracking old towns and harbours to wander around though. “Door Banging Association”?! …great humour, Scott. 👍🏻😂

Definitely hike the Samaria gorge next time you are in Chania. Bus ride up through the White Mountains is spectacular. Check it's open first 👍
Cats Rock 🤘🏴

Some beautiful evening shots🌅 A fantastic video- entertains and informative ! 👏⭐️
Crete (and the rest of Greece) is on my bucket list, but no cheap flights from 🇨🇦. I'll have to see it through your lens. Great video!
Super duper video Scott never been to Crete other Greek islands but they all have that feel good vibe thanks for taking us on your journey x̌x
Can’t believe Steve Marsh hasn’t commented on all those boats? Another great video Scott, they just keep getting better & better.
Never been to crete, its now on my list thanks to you

I believe one of the contestants is now a gay porn star.
I believe one of the contestants is now a gay “adult” star.
Another great video Scott. Ouzo is the drink of the devil. Been there and suffered greatly
Well done scott love how you work on a budget and telling us want you payed me and my husband really look forward to watching where you travel to next

I think the taps are isolators for washing machine and hot water tank. Love your layed back videos :)
Now you’ve popped your Greek cherry there’s lots of other wonderful islands to sample 😀
Great video Scott. Well done in walking around the streets & harbours of both towns, plus the 2.2km breakwater !
Really enjoyed your trip to Crete and to see beautiful warm sunshine.
Nice on Scott, I’ve been to chania for my holidays for the last nine years
Another great Video Scot, I think those taps isolate the whole bathroom.
Digging the music ….. oh and you make really interesting videos 😎
Watching this in Kefalonia. Perfect timing
Glad you made rhat film Scott, I have not fancied visiting Greece on a budget and that confirmed I was correct 😂
The greek islands are heavenly 😍 I've only done 3 but about 7 times! I want to do more!
Thanks Scott that was an excellent video 👍

Otherwise known as a "free range Springfield" special 😂
Ahh Raki, loved Crete its been 18 years since I was there but lovely place and people and I love Greece in General been a good few times.
Great video and wonderful presentation of Crete. Enjoy your perspective. Always like looking at the foods you have found.
That was brilliant! Really enjoyed that

Great Video Bud 👍👍👍

The 'ch' of Chania (Χανιά in Greek) is the same as Scottish 'ch' in 'loch' but a bit softer. Btw, the iconic Nana Mouskouri was born in Chania.
Chania is beautiful, been there loads of times..
It was fun seeing you walk streets where I was just a few weeks ago at Heraklion! Sad you missed the Minoan archeology museum, it's one of the best museums in Europe. But super neat to see parts of the city I missed.
That super yacht Home was featured on one of the series on Below Deck.
Packed a lot in for the time you were there. Love watching your videos.
The wall taps are here in Spain too. I think they are for emergency shutting down the water supply .. in case of. Never seen that in the Netherlands either. Love your vids btw!
Hope you had a wonderful trip! Greece is an amazing country and you must return soon. Another Greek beer many locals like is called FIX. Enjoy! 🍺
I must’ve been on Crete around the same time as you (September). We spent a week on Crete (Rethymno) and spent most of it exploring the island in a hire car. You should go back and hike the Samaria Gorge, you'll love it
SSSSSSSSSSH, don't tell anyone how beautiful Crete is.
The hot/cold taps in the wall - I lived in Spain and many homes have this feature.
Great video Scott I really enjoyed it. Thanks.
Silicon earplugs are a must when travelling
@ 19:17 Got to say you look pretty dapper in that straw hat, Scott...should have picked it up 😎
Best stuffed tomatoes and fresh orange juice I’ve had anywhere was in Crete. I always look forward to your content here.
The taps on the wall are another form of stopcock, for if repairs need to be done on the plumbing in the bathroom. Very commonly found in Greek bathrooms, and not just in hotels.
