  • Clássica performance da banda no seu show acústico. É um cover de Lead Belly e tem uma letra e melodia bem pesadas, já que, conta uma história de traição e suicídio/assassinato.

I swear this song gets better every time I hear it. It is AMAZING. Kurt's voice is just so incredibly raw and heartfelt - it's like he's bleeding inside and you can hear it in every sound he makes. When he pauses near the end after the word "shiver" I actually do shiver, every time. He was incredible.

In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
Her husband, was a hard working man
Just about a mile from here
His head was found in a driving wheel
But his body never was found

Will forever remain one of the greatest music performances of all time. That voice is hard to recreate. That is genuine from the pit of his stomach anguish.
Anyone who could capture an audience like he did here and live on decades (possibly hundreds) of years later, reaching and impacting millions upon millions has done something very special with their life. Something many of us can only dream of. All done within 5 minutes at the age of 26 (at the time of recording).
It tears me up to think someone with that talent, that amount of well earned respect not to mention fame, money, freedom couldn't figure out how to be happy with himself. Either we humans are just fucked up or the world fucks us up. It's a hard pill to swallow.

Why are people giving this song thumbs down? Full disclosure I’ve never been a huge Nirvana fan but he killed it in this song and nailed the exact vibe its supposed to have. Its a dark song, and if you came here to listen to it and then gave it a thumbs down check yourself. Probably half of you don’t even know what a guitar scale is much less can sing on key. You do realize this song actually goes back at least 100 years, but unless you were born in the 1940s or watched True Blood you would never have heard it. Have some respect.

Just about a mile from here
His head was found in a driving wheel
But his body never was found
My girl, my girl, don't lie to me

  • @ajjs8869
    @ajjs8869 5 років тому +7

This is a very important performance. As others have mentioned it seems Kurt set it up like a funeral as a signal to his own death which he knew would be soon. Why I think he also set it up like a funeral and played this song was a nod to the blues of the 20/30s which influenced The Beatles, the Stones and Zeppelin etc which in turn were big influences on him.
It feels as if he’s closing the loop on that influence which had resulted in the greatest musical revolution and production of the highest quality of music we’ve ever created. Around the early 90s commercial interests began to get the upper hand in the music industry. What had always been a balance between record label bosses pushing what they “knew” would sell, sell safely and sell well vs the power of the artists creativity and what they wanted to produce because it was good, now started to be dominated by the record labels. I feel like 1960-1990 was a sweet spot in terms of artists producing exceptional music and it being scarce and relatively original meant that people consumed it and the highest quality music dominated.
Nowadays (and from the late 90s onwards) the music that dominates is the music that we are told to like and that will sell safely. That is NOT to say that high quality music is not produced nowadays or indeed after the mid-90s, of course it is but it is more under the radar and won’t be established long term, like music from the 60/70/80s. Therefore this song choice and funeral set up is a nod to the death of a golden generation of music for humanity and one that will be remembered for hundreds of years.
P.S I know I'm reading into this way too much haha

My Father was from Harlan County, Kentucky, born in 1922, and fought in World War II in the Pacific. When he would get drunk, he would sing this song. "...in the pines...in the pines...where the sun never shines..." It must have been popular in Appalachia. My father died in 2002. After the funeral, my sister and I walked to her car. When she started her car, the radio, which we know was off, was on and we heard Kurt Cobain singing this song, a song that never before had we heard other than from our father's voice when he was drunk. We were stunned, completely shocked and broke-down in tears. Later we researched the song and discovered that it was a Leadbelly composition and Cobain was covering it. How was the radio on when we know it was off? Why did we hear this song right after burying our Father, the only person in the world that we had heard sing this song? I am an atheist, but it seems like my Father's spirit was saying something to us. Maybe goodbye.
