It is termed countersinking the bolt heads.

Having the same issue. Tv mount is 18” across but my studs appear to be 20”. Should I get 20” 2x4’s exactly or longer? What are my options to put the holes in the 2x4 if I don’t have the .5 electric inch drive?

@@eaazzyy420 I would go slightly longer so you don’t split the ends of the 2x4. I hate to say it but you may have to use a ratchet and socket and drive the bolts by hand. It’s def doable!

1st..thank you for this! 2nd... if it's off center you don't need a 2x4 to go to all 3 studs? Only 2?

It looks slightly higher on left side unless it's the fireplace slightly off.

lol it’s on a tilt mount that allows you to pull out and turn left and right

Is there a thinner wood than a 2x4 that i could use so as to keep the mount more flush to the wall? I have the same issue as you my mount doesn't span the two necessary studs @ 16" Thanks.

You can probably use a 1x4 but the 2x4 gives it strength and stability.

@@dondoes4303 thanks, I'll visit my local HD and look at the 1x4 lumber pieces and see if it looks or seems sturdy enough.

What size and tyoe of screws to go thru 2x4 to studs? No anchor screws?

exactly what i was looking for. So you used the bolts that came with the mount on the 2x4s to studs and then got shorter bolts for the mount to 2x4s?

I thought so too but looking a little harder, it's a few inches off. Just enough to justify using the 2×4s.
