I was living in Los Feliz in LA in the mid nineties - this movie completely captured the time and place. Vince Vaughn as Trent is legendary and rewatchable. Vaughn's best performance.
Ben Affleck has said that him and Matt Damon, Cole Hauser hung out with Jon Favreau, Vince Vaughn and their buddies when they were all struggling actors and the hangout's and parties became the story of Swingers.
It’s the small things that many people wouldn’t pick up on unless you’re very familiar with SoCal. Also the scene where they all drive separate to go to parties and eat out. SoCal is so spread out yet people travel far to meet up all the time. Like Vegas. So funny how jacked we’d get went you left for Vegas but would be tuckered out by the time you actually got there- good 4 hrs +. Plus that shot of the lights is truly the first glimpse of Vegas as you reach the top of the slow grade and curve. Very well done…
This is one of my favorite movies. didn't see it in the theater. A friend of mine gave it to me as a bday gift a couple years after it came up. Still have that DVD
Sometimes I wish I had seen this movie when I was younger. It really helped me make sense of my feelings after a relationship I was in broke down. For the longest time I couldn't let go of what I thought could have been something great. In my own life, I had yet to learn that sometimes it's more important to live for the moment and to not miss those chances which are right in front of you. Our old love's may not fade, but you must let new one's take their place, in order to grow and move on.This story beautifully distills what it means to feel love and loss as a young man. To me it is a must watch for any guy whose had his heart-broken. It helped heal mine.
Every guy going through a bad breakup/heartbreak should have to watch the scene with Rob and Mike at the diner and Rob and Mike at Mike's apartment when he's depressed. Rob is dropping pearls of wisdom right and left. The line where he says calling her will never make her come back, only push her farther away, is gospel.
Quick history lesson This movie is in a long list of young men making moves about their friend Fellini made I Vitelloni in 54' which inspired Scorsese to make mean streets which then came Linklater's Slackers, Clerks, and this. So if you wanna see this movie in 1950s Italy. Find I Vitelloni
i could say i had a bowling shirt....... and me and my friends were still teenagers and didn't know about this movie but we always played NHL 93 and 94 going to blockbuster and renting for the weekend
Their collective assessment that Vince Vaughn shouldn't bother doing serious work seems ill-informed, he's put together some fantastic recent serious performances in Hacksaw Ridge and Brawl in Cell Block 99.
I think it's supposed to be implied that Mike is just down in the dumps and depressed. Trent says "your the fun loving out going party guy" and he seems to know all the bars and door guys. They just should have made him come out of his shell a little more by the end. Thank you Fennesey for bringing up the trailer park scene and Trent's after school special story!
I forgot Doug Lymon directed it. Go and Edge of Tomorrow are great movies. Basically lived in Silver Lake when this came out. Going to different parties in each car.
Interestingly.....and probably without meaning to do so......Doug Liman captured the mid to late ‘90s between Swingers and following it up with GO.....both films had a backdrop that featured subcultures that finally broke through to mainstream....I guess you’d have to take Cameron Crowe’s SINGLES to cover the early ‘90s.....
Just watched this movie after a long term breakup by complete chance because I wanted to watch a good rewatchable episode. Its nice to know universal feelings aren’t your own and this movie does a great job at describing the nuances of friendship and breakups. Now I get to watch this 🙏
they explicitly address the whole false bravado vibe in THE SOPRANOS. When Christopher meets Jon Favreau on the set of that fake movie he's shooting, he tries to make fun of Favreau "you guys think you're all Rat Pack, but you're just losers", like he says this as a criticism of the movie, and Favreau's like "umm yeah, that was kinda the whole point of the movie"
Made was funny as shit after you watch it more than once. It’s basically all improvised. The dvd extras of watching Vaughn improvise new shit every scene is better than the entire movie
I think on the "actually, Mike sucks" topic, I think an argument could be made that Trent has enough self awareness to realize he's kind of a loser as well (or at least not nearly the objective status that he wants socially), and he continues to hang out with Mike because ultimately Mike looks up to him, so him being around makes him feel cooler and worshiped. He's a narcissist that needs an adoring audience.
What the heck are they talking about around 53 min mark with Heather Graham being in Fever Pitch? What first girlfriend? There is only one girlfriend in Fever Pitch and it definitely isn’t Heather Graham!
This is the ultimate guys film. Quotable, great video game scene (NHL 93 classic, and the cringy I like this girl let me call her right away scene. Also, if you have a lady in your life, and she doesn't like this film, then good luck.
They really know how to oversell movies. I mean, Swingers is a good rewatchable movie but that's it. It's not one of the best movies of that era. From that year alone you had Fargo, Trainspotting, Breaking The Waves, Sling Blade, Hard Eight, Secrets and Lies, Bound, Drifting Clouds, La Promesse, A Summer's Tale, Sleepers, Pusher, Bottle Rocket. And on and on, it's just one of the many, many good movies
What age were you when this came out? I would never argue that it's better than Fargo or Trainspotting but this film had a huge cultural impact for people of a certain age. Everyone I knew was watching this film. Everyone was listening to the soundtrack. Everyone was quoting it. It was a big deal.
Outside of Trainspotting, nothing you mentioned had a cultural impact close to Swingers. It’s actually a testament to how good Swingers is that it’s still mentioned today despite how loaded the 90s were with great movies. Also, a movie doesn’t have to be great to be impactful. Just look at something like, idk, Top Gun. It’s super ridiculous and downright makes no sense, especially at the end, but its cultural impact is undeniable and that’s why it stood the test of time.
He does pretty good impressions, but sometimes he just doesn't know when to quit. It's funny the first time and then he just tries to milk it from there.

"Sue why are you carrying a gat? I grew up in L.A. man. You wouldn't understand. ANANHEIM. Whatever man." Hilarious.

When I saw Made I assumed Vince Vaughn spent all his Swingers money on cocaine and Jon Favreau spent all of his money on Food

Bills Boston is showing. Vegas is 220 miles from LA. I've made it there in less than three hours many times. He also says Los Feliz wrong.
i could say i had a bowling shirt....... and me and my friends were still teenagers and didn't know about this movie but we always played NHL 93 and 94 going to blockbuster and renting for the weekend
Hey look at little Wayne, his legs are shaking!
Rio Hackford who played Skully (House of Pain) died on April 14 2022 at age 51
I still can’t watch the scene where he calls Nikki...repeatedly. Always forward ahead. Too Brutal.
Me either !!
Completely agree
You should watch it again and see where it goes cause it's nice and, y'know, no expectations.
We have all been there, simped over some girl and did some stupid ass drunk dial 😂
I will tell anyone who will listen that this is the scariest scene in cinematic history.
Love when the guy talks about auditioning for Deep Space Nine
I’ve listened to this and bills show for a long time and this is the first time I’ve ever seen Sean’s face and it wasn’t what I expected
This movie was, is and always will be money.
Great film, it’s really one of the most rewatchable films ever
Their collective assessment that Vince Vaughn shouldn't bother doing serious work seems ill-informed, he's put together some fantastic recent serious performances in Hacksaw Ridge and Brawl in Cell Block 99.
Did you know Bill Simmons invented going to Vegas? Along with podcasts, gambling, and ranking NBA players?

This is quintessential Vaughn. This and Clay Pigeons

Nice job, fellas. Other than our own podcast, this show is our favorite podcast.
Ron Livingston along with Vaughn make this movie
When I watch this movie I think about how much Vince Vaughn should have been bigger
Wedding Crashers? Old school? Weren't those kinda big hits?
athenian221 Dodgeball!
When he ended up doing the psycho remake. That held him back a bit. Then he rebounded
@@athenian221 bigger. That's two movies. What after that?
check out Made. puff daddy vince vaughn Favs
"It didn't occur to me."

Best pod ever. Rewatchables!
Aged the worst - Salami is not a breakfast.
Salami log > salami slices.
Deena Martin has said that after Swingers auditions dried up and she quit acting and drove home to Delaware
Who did she play in Swingers? the ex girlfriend.?
@@HC-iu1vs she played the girl Vince vaughn hooked up with in Vegas. the waitress.
i watch this at least 2 times a year
I love that The Wizard gets a shout out from Fennessey. Sad that Cherry Poppin’ Daddies did not.
Made was funny as shit after you watch it more than once. It’s basically all improvised. The dvd extras of watching Vaughn improvise new shit every scene is better than the entire movie
You let screech in the club ? Let me see where screech S name is on the list
Favorite movie. Brilliant, brilliant film
Alright, alright, ill ask: where do all the high school girls hang out around here.
There's a funny line in the Office where Michael says that Jon Favreau will become the more famous actor between him and Vince Vaughn in Swingers.
I'm sure Vegas got a big resurgence of activity when the first Hangover movie dropped
Best post release success story is Dazed and Confused.
Robocop

They play Nintendo in Boyz in the hood.
They play Street Fighter 1 in Juice
Money, baby, money!!!

I watched this movie last night
How dare you not mention Heather Graham as a generational Talent
I definitely owned a few wallet chains after this movie came out 🤦♂️
I think they're getting downtown and the strip confused. The strip was always cool.

Saw Swingers in the theater. For once I feel more in the know than Bill Simmons.
And I LOVE Bodies, Rest, & Motion. Great flick.
Those guys drove back to LA on zero sleep. Awake 24 hours… Only in your 20’s..?
RIP Marty
Shawn sounds so much cooler than be looks lol
Is he clean? Is he clean?
Desert was on becker.
It shouldn't take 100 takes to get a perfect take. I know that directors like Coppola and Kubrick are perfectionists but that's a bit ridiculous.
Missed you rascals...
Great episode! Now that it's on Disney+, we need a Rewatchables on Hamilton!
It’s a 5 hour max drive from Venice to Vegas, Bill
VEGAS BABY!!!!! 4 1/2 hours later. Vegas.

If anything, Swingers is under appreciated. Great movie!!

to each his own. i've never rewatched any of the shit you mentioned.
Netflix 10 episode same cast... Just older.
The movie is all cringe to me. The people that tried to emulate them all feel embarrassed now
What's aged the worst? The title. Swingers sounds like 3 white Boomers trying to pick up a 4th.
Poor Bill Simmons....always trying so hard to be relevant and trying to come off as a heterosexual but always failing on both fronts.
Swinger may have been the better movie but Made was the funnier movie.
Cars had alarms 25 years ago. Las Vegas was profitable and extremely popular prior to swingers
I like Chris Ryan a lot, but does anyone ever enjoy his “impressions”?
No
He does pretty good impressions, but sometimes he just doesn't know when to quit. It's funny the first time and then he just tries to milk it from there.
Vegas ain't cool?
If you like cheesecake it’s fine otherwise its Chinese
Nobody who watches this reads comments
Overrated LA movie
