  • This is a supplement to the initial two videos regarding servicing a VM turntable. This covers additional problems requiring the cycling transmission to be pulled. This includes shutoff problems, most commonly the knob turning to "off" but the power switch failing to disengage. This should give a better understanding on how to perform a complete service.

    I recently served one. A complete oxidized mess to the mechanism subject to moisture. The cam gear and speed selector frozen but strange to me the idle tire was hard as plastic.

    Hi,
    Thanks very much for showing all the detail and little stuff you need to know when servicing one of these VM changers. Your experience and knowledge of these record players is very evident. I am just starting out with these record players so this video series you've done is extraordinarily helpful.

    Thanks for making this video. It is a huge help in getting the V-M I have back into working condition.
    Do you have any info on the power connection? I am going to power my V-M a1296 directly instead of from the receiver unit. I understand the AC switch can use a cord plugged into the wall using the 4 prong connector on the other end. I just can't figure out which pins the wires are supposed to connect to.

    • @JordanPier
      @JordanPier  Рік тому

      Of the 4 pins, one is AC, one is chassis Ground, one is the low side of the switch to supply power to something else like the console. The last one is AC.
      On occasion the last two pins could be switched. I'll get an ohm meter, turn the turntable on and measure the resistance between either the two outer pins or one outer pin and the one just inside the other outer pin. With the turntable on you should read around 200 something ohms and off should be infinity. If it's 200 something all the time you're on the low side of the switch. Connect AC to the two pins that only have resistance when the switch is on and you should be good.

      The linkage has to be put into the transmissions side with the transmission out so you can get a steep enough angle to get it completely seated.

    Thank you for these helpful videos! I have several Motorola consoles and watched this 3 part video many times to get into one of my changers. I was successful until I went all the way and removed the tone arm. When the record ends the tone arm slides back a little across it before lifting up. Any thought on where to recheck would be great, I took lots of pics and am not sure what I changed.
    Thanks again, I appreciate you sharing all these projects!

    Hi Jordan. It’s a long shot if this message will reach you since this video was uploaded a few years ago.
    These videos have been of so much help while refurbishing my own zenith stereo console. It has an identical turntable.
    Would you have any clue how to fix a turntable that doesn’t begin the cycle automatically? I can tell that the little trip pawl on the main cam gear is not engaging with the turntable since I can only get it to cycle by moving the gear by hand to engage it. However, the cycle will begin when I use the reject option on the dial. What gives? The pawl is free moving and lubricated. I have a version with plastic parts, not the brass type. Is there supposed to be tension on it, or is there something that isn’t pushing it out when I turn the record player on?
    If you have any idea, I’d love to hear it

    • @JordanPier
      @JordanPier  Рік тому

      You jave to look at the interaction with the reject function knob and how it starts the cycle.
      Typically when you start the cycle something is supposed to kick the aluminum slide back towards the arm. The end closest to the center of the record is supposed to contact the trip. Make sure this happens.
      Also if it picks up at the end, one can assume the aluminum slide is ok and thr interactions with the arm are ok and ots likely the connecting linkage between the on/off/reject knob and the aluminum slide.

    hey I need your help!
    I got a GE portable automatic record changer here that the overarm is all floppy side to side and doesn't stay in a fixed position when it is down like it is supose to. In addition to this I need to shift it waaay to the right in order for it to stay in it's upper locked position, as-in right above the tonearm rest. I have already had the player appart to regrease it and fix the idler.
    I have a feeling someone forced something at some point, this is the changer with the (F) shaped overarm if that makes a difference at all.
    I already have a feeling whatever is out of wack is what is causing the automatic mode to malfunction. The machine works fine on manual but when you engage auto with a stack of records you need to manually tell the player to return arm and drop the next record by engaging reject. I had to add ziptie spacers in the shaft of the overarm to prevent the arm from coming down violently, and bumping the tonearm, scratching records in the process! It does that by it self, once I think the arm is down it will hammer down on it's shaft, bumping the back of the tonearm. I really would like to fix it the right way if possible! I didn't see any broken pieces inside

    Help please!!
    I have a Columbia 360 which is a VM mechanism. I completely took everything apart, cleaned and lubed and oiled what needs to be. The speed is good, I stacked several records on the changer and they dropped and played as normal. When the last record dropped though, as soon as the needle touched the record, the player shut off. I turned the player back on and it plays fine. After the record finished, the arm returned and shut off like it should. I’m lost. I went through the manual troubleshooting suggestions for the turntable shutting off after the last record drops but non of the suggestions helped. Any ideas?
    Thanks

    • @JordanPier
      @JordanPier  2 роки тому

      On the main slide there is a spring loaded feeler that if it's sticky in the least will cause this symptom. There must also be precise timing between when the last record falls and triggers the size detector to when the record holding arm falls after. If the arm falls to the stop before the record trips the size sensor it will cause the symptom.

      Ok, another issue just popped up. While I was troubleshooting I cycled the reject with the arm down expecting it to shut off but when the arm moved to the end just before lowering down on the catch, the arm snapped to the 10 inch record position then turned off. ??? Man, it seems every time I clean or lube something another issue pops up, Frustrating. Any thoughts?

      Just to let you know, I figured it out. After I cleaned the arm I put the wrong spacer in between the arm and player and the arm would not tighten enough causing the mechanism not to lock into position. I found the original which was thinner back on. It tightened more giving more spring compression and now it works great! Thanks for your help!👍

    The records are running to slow, does that mean I need to replace the motor?

    • @JordanPier
      @JordanPier  2 роки тому

      Pulley may be worn. Is it equally slow on all speeds after a new idler? If so, it may be the motor.
      If only slow on one or two speeds then it may be the pulley. You can build up with clear nail polish and machine down until right of you have those skills. Otherwise replace the motor
