  • The first part of the Voice of Music 563 restoration is to get the turntable and record changer working properly. This is a daunting task at the beginning, a lot like taking a clock apart, and hoping to put it back together and have it work. Armed only with the written instructions from Gary at thevoiceofmusic.com, I dive into this strange new world of the record changer mechanism. My best advice- take your time and study the mechanism as much as you can, take pictures along the way, and realize that if you fail on the first attempt- then take it back apart and do it again. Just don't lose any parts, and there are a lot of little ones. In this episode, I am not familiar with how it all works, and I am hoping I put everything back together the right way. I did not. This is a resilient little machine though, so if at first you don't succeed....
The problems with the changer were mostly that parts were stuck together as the old lubricant had dried and became a glue instead of a lubrication. Cleaning does wonders for this!

Hello. At the end of your video you have the same issue I am having on both of my vm record changers. Your follow up video didn’t say what you did to fix the auto changing feature. What did fix it for you?
Would be very interested in the fix.

The biggest problem that I had was getting the little arms and controllers in the correct position. I had put the levers connected to the tone arm back in in the incorrect position, and the on switch lever in the wrong position, and it would not activate the big gear, so nothing happened. I tried to make the disassembly and reassembly videos as clear as I could for this reason. It is like putting a watch back together- one thing wrong and the whole thing won't work. Pay careful attention to the position and orientation of each part.

Ha ha- also you can use muffin tins to mitigate this problem.

For that very reason in use 1 pint plastic containers that have lids, like you’d get with Chinese food. And they’re stackable when empty!
