  • In addition to making changers for other radio manufacturers, V-M also sold some with their name on them, though they are less common. I like this changer, and have a nearly identical one is a very large GE suitcase portable.
    The changer frame does not seem to be as rigid as say the Admiral record changer or the RCA-made changers which were V-M copies made under license. This is not an issue if you do not plan to stack a bunch of heavy 78's. This changer will do it, but it will also let you know that it is not happy doing it.
    This changer is also less sophisticated than say a Collero changer, such as was used by Magnavox, with its ability to play odd-size records automatically. This is a non-issue for me, any odd-size records I might have will probably be played manually on a non-changer turntable anyway.

    Record changers were a way of life for many years and in fact the 45 rpm was designed specifically to be played on a changer. Despite the mixed opinions on record changers, i prefer a fully automatic record changer. Its a romantic memory and one of convenience as well. Many hi fi geeks despised them for reasons of their own. However, nothing beat a stack of 45 rpm singles set in a personalized sequence and letting the machine go to work. It was also a marvel to watch. And yes, great sound could also be had from a good changer & tonearm/ cartridge combination.

    VM changers are workhorses , but for different size records I like the magnavox micro-matic better... but the first records have to be 12"... then you can drop in sizes to 10" and 7"... if they all play the same speed that is... your platter is gummed up... the platter should spin down longer on shut off than what this one is...

    I have a 1963 field code model that works beautifully. It has the floating cartridge as well as the floating tone arm of swords

    ' V/M must have made many millions of these changers over the decades they were in production. Starting with the Tri-O-Matic until the end of production in the late 1970's, or 1980's. V/M built a great mass production record changer, although they could never compare to Duel, Collaro, or Garrard.

    think you might need a new idler wheel or use rubber renue to rejuvinate it because the speed is off

      Those idler wheels got a sort of glaze on them I used to put brake fluid on them then denatured alcohol as well as alcohol on motor shaft as well while is was running.

      You play your good records on that changer, if you want to wear them out. That changer has a tracking force of 6 to 10 grams. No thanks

      @@johnalbanese30 It depends on the cartridge, but the 1200 series and later could safely trip at 2 grams, though the tone arm bearings needed modification for V-M's 2 gram cartridges. I never saw any of these track at over six grams and vinyl won't be hurt by anything under 9.
      It's ok to be a snob, but reality is reality.

    Interesting about that "manual" mode you show. Something must be out of alignment on your changer, as there is never a time when a V-M tone arm will just sit at the end of the record without tripping-- in ANY situation. The trip slide is activated (pushed) at all times by the movement of the tone arm as it gets into the finish groove area, thus inducing the reject cycle. The trip slide is never out of the way of this operation. I'd be very interested in seeing underneath your changer to see what is keeping that from happening, not that it's a bad thing! I've repaired hundreds of V-M changers and have never seen this, so I'm very curious.

      It has been a while since I have messed around on the under side of this, but there is a mechanism that 'disconnects" the trip slide in the manual mode forcing it to full manual. I have another seemingly identical V-M changer badged for Motorola which lacks the manual detent position, as well as the trip disconnect.

    I need your help! I just got a 1957 voice of music V-o-Matic and the turntable isn’t spinning. It has been fully restored, so it should be working. Are you willing to offer any advice?

    • @okbridges
      @okbridges  7 місяців тому

      Did you have the changer restored and shipped to you? It may be stuck mid-cycle from shipping and need to be cleared.
      Set the changer on a level surface, set the control to off and pull up on the tone arm so it is merely sitting on the rest and not clipped to it. Revolve the turntable by hand until the tonearm returns to the rest and the turntable turns without resistance. Set speed to 78 rpm. turn on. motor should run & turntable revolve. If turntable does not spin but you can hear motor running, you will need to remove turntable to check idler.
